Trump and Republicans are trying to end the Energy Star program and stop California from phasing out the sale of new gas vehicles. On EVs, they enjoy some Democratic support. CA school districts are paying a hefty sum for on-campus police. Little oversight exists on how those dollars are spent and how officers behave inside campus gates. Journalist Claire Hoffman unpacks Sister, Sinner, the gripping true crime story of evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson's disappearance and miraculous return. If you've never heard the name, Aimee Semple McPherson, you're not alone—but Claire Hoffman's Sister Sinner will ensure you never forget her name again as America's first mega-preacher.Today, we discuss this riveting biography, which opens with the astonishing true story of Aimee, who shaped modern evangelicalism, vanished into the ocean for 35 days, and returned with a kidnapping tale so wild it led to two sensational trials. The author was the first researcher granted access to the complete court records of Aimee's grand jury trial—records that, for more than a century, the Foursquare Church has refused to share with the outside world.Uncover her journalistic approach, which is both deeply researched and refreshingly secular. Embracing Aimee's contradictions—faith healer and showman, sinner and saint, feminist and fundamentalist creates a page-turning experience. Whether religious or not, you'll love this conversation on how charisma, celebrity, and faith collide. In this intimate and insightful conversation, Claire and I discuss:Her background and five-year research process to bring Aimee's story to lifeWhy Aimee's disappearance is the opening chapter, and what type of reader did she hope the true crime angle might pull inHow Claire's background as a journalist for Rolling Stone has given her a unique lens into the world of what it means to be a celebrityThe effort and reverence required when accessing court documents like this for a project
In this episode, Claire Hoffman explores the idea behind how our flaws, doubt, cynicism, and even ambition aren’t signs of failure, but can be used as fuel. She tells the story of Aimee Semple McPherson, a woman who built a religious empire and faked her own kidnapping. But this episode isn’t about scandal. It’s about the tension that we all carry between our light and dark sides. Claire says sometimes the bad wolf does good work. This conversation is about embracing contradiction and finding grace in the mess. Key Takeaways: Claire’s book: “Sister Sinner: The Miraculous Life and Mysterious Disappearance of Aimee Semple McPherson. Aimee Semple McPherson’s duality of character, embodying both “good” and “bad” traits. The impact of McPherson on American religion and her role in establishing one of the first megachurches. The complexities of fame and its effects on personal identity and mental health. The concept of “audience capture” and its implications for public figures. Societal pressures and judgments faced by women, particularly in the context of McPherson’s life. The significance of grace, forgiveness, and personal transformation in the human experience. It emphasized a powerful, personal experience of God's presence and the manifestation of spiritual gifts. The Assemblies of God is one of the largest Pentecostal denominations in the world, founded in 1914 in Hot Springs, Arkansas.Foursquare Church - Founded in 1923 by evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson in Los Angeles, California. In the mid-20th century, this emphasis spread beyond Pentecostal denominations to the broader Charismatic movement which embraced similar experiences of the Holy Spirit. The Jesus Movement in the 60's and 70's, along with Calvary Chapel. The Vineyard Movement began in the late 1970s and was founded by John Wimber. The first Vineyard church was officially established in 1982 in Anaheim, California.Catholic charismatic movementHillsong, Bethel Church, etc.In these environments you'll hear about “baptism with the HS”There's one main evidence: speaking in tonguesSo it becomes a huge focus in these churchesOften becomes the main thingIt'll freak you out if you've never seen it beforeBut what does the Bible say about it? That's what we'll answer today: What is the purpose of baptism with the Holy Spirit? We don't believe things based on how weird or normal they seemWe look to God and his Word in all we do (and believe) First of all, “baptism with the HS” is in the Bible, not just made up by the pentecostals and charismaticsThe term was coined by Jesus! Acts 1:5 (NLT) “John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”This is why the disciples went back to JerusalemPracticed disciplines of connection, prayer, Bible studyWaited on God with great expectationBut not exactly sure what it would look likeBaptism with the HS was a biblical concept way before it was a pentecostal thingThe real question is what is the purpose? That's what our text will answer todayBecause the Pentecostal movement traces its roots back to Acts ch...

Andrew Samonsky believes that Jerry Garcia's death (yes that Jerry Garcia) may have instigated his performance career in some way. From being a “deadhead” to becoming a Broadway actor, Andrew opens up about his years of following the Grateful Dead and dealing with drug problems that led him to go to rehab. Lost and feeling helpless, he decided to pray to help find his path. He soon received a letter from his old voice teacher encouraging him to pursue a career in singing, and the rest is history. He looks back on his childhood, his love for singing despite being a shy kid, and how, ultimately, theatre and its community are what saved him during his troubled years. Currently playing as Tadeusz Lempicki in “Lempicka”, Andrew shares the story behind his cosmic connection to the show, which goes all the way back to 22 years ago and a random interaction with the Peace Corps. He discusses the challenges and joys of originating a role, the importance of trust and collaboration between actors and creative teams, and the feeling of gratitude for the opportunity to bring characters to life and how it can impact audiences. Andrew Samonsky made his Broadway debut in the 2008 production of “South Pacific” and has additional Broadway credits, including “The Mystery of Edwin Drood”, and “Scandalous: The Life and Trials of Aimee Semple McPherson”. His TV credits include “Madam Secretary”, “It Could Be Worse”, and “Elementary”. He can now be seen as Tadeusz Lempicki in the Broadway production of “Lempicka”. Max Evry is here. Max is the author of a fantastic new book called A Masterpiece in Disarray, the oral history of David Lynch's Dune. Those of you who have seen the Denis Villeneuve version may only be dimly aware of the David Lynch's Dune. It was only his third film, and it's the only film of his that he claims not to love in some form or another. David Lynch's Dune was, at its time, the most expensive science fiction film Universal had ever made. It starred an unknown actor named Kyle MacLaughlin and the guy who had only directed two film and one of them was Eraserhead. If you don't think that's going to be an interesting story, I can't help you. Christina Ward, like Max, is a pal o' mine. She is the Vice President and Editor at Feral House Publishing, and she has written a book called Holy Food: How Cults, Communes and Religious Movements Influence What We Eat. I learned a whole bunch of stuff I didn't know including, what major religion used to suggest that after someone died, it was a good idea to eat cake off their corpse. True Tales From Weirdsville tells the stranger than fiction tale of California's weird association with religious cults, focusing on two strange organizations that were both HUGELY popular, that both started out with seemingly good intentions, and how, one, specifically, went VERY off the rails. This is the tale of Aimee Semple Mcpherson's Four Square Gospel Church, and Charles Dederich's Synanon. You won't believe your ears!

When you put religion on TV, you have to get religion consultants. Why even bother being accurate? Does Jesus look at someone to be healed with compassion—or anger? Aimee Elizabeth Semple McPherson (née Kennedy; October 9, 1890 – September 27, 1944), also known as Sister Aimee or Sister, was a Canadian Pentecostal evangelist and media celebrity in the 1920s and 1930s, famous for founding the Foursquare Church. McPherson pioneered the use of broadcast mass media for wider dissemination of both religious services and appeals for donations, using radio to draw in both additional audience and revenue with the growing appeal of popular entertainment and incorporating stage techniques into her weekly sermons at Angelus Temple, an early megachurch. Our theme song was written and performed by Anna Bosnick. If you'd like to support the show on a per episode basis, you can find our Patreon page here. Be sure to check our website for more details.
I came across this book that a friend of mine recommended to me named "Fifty Pentecostal and Charismatic Leaders." I like the book so much that I ended up calling the author not long ago and speaking to him at length about the book. The book mentions many leaders you are likely to have heard of: Smith Wigglesworth, William Seymour, and Aimee Semple McPherson. Among these people is mentioned an individual originally from Great Britain named Donald Gee. The description given to Lake is particularly interesting: "The Apostle of Balance." At a time when there was so much hysteria in the Pentecostal community, Donald Gee was a steady voice that brought balance to an emerging movement. I believe that this principle of balance is a crucial one to realize for our personal lives and our walks of faith. The ultimate balance can be achieved by keeping our eyes on Jesus.
For the first time on a podcast, scholar of Mormonism Cristina Rosetti discusses her Pentecostal background here on Mormon Book Reviews! Cristina shares her experience of converting to the Foursquare Church as a teenager. For a while she wanted to become the next Aimee Semple McPherson, the female founder of the denomination. Cristina recounts the fascinating history of McPherson and the church. She also describes witnessing speaking in tongues, healings, and an exorcism! We then discuss her "Born Again" conversion to the Catholic Faith. We then talk about how she got interested in Mormon Fundamentalism via her study of 19th Century communitarian religious groups. This led her to specialize in the Study of the History and Lived Experience of Mormon Fundamentalism. What makes Cristina's approach so unique is rather than focus on Polygamy, she became enamored with the doctrines of Fundamentalism. Especially Adam/God. Next week she and Moroni Lopez Jessop will be giving a special presentation at Sunstone, it is previewed here. I want to thank Cristina for coming on sharing with the audience some of her favorite books and telling her story.

Sister Aimee led a church that is located in Echo Park. Although she wanted her followers to believe that she was special, the truth is that she was just as ordinary as them. Curiously, she was born on October 9, 1890. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/isee109/support
It's MM's turn at the wheel and she brings us the tale of the first televangelist in the U.S., Aimee Semple McPherson - her rise to prominence in the 1920s, and her strange disappearance and the circumstances around it. What do you think happened? We recorded this on Labor Day weekend where Katy resembled a burrito-eating gremlin and MM was eaten alive by bugs, so the energy is HIGH.
