The church is well aware of the number of abuse cases it has hiding behind closed doors. They're so aware that they take great efforts to squash the stories. We break down the horrors of the BYU Honor Code, and discuss the history of coercion tracing back to the pioneer days. Could the Saints feel justified in victim-shaming because abuse is written into their very scripture? Adam Paul Steed, raised Mormon, was abused as an LDS Boy Scout in Idaho. He became a nationally known whistleblower when he turned in a dangerous predator, and teamed with his father to successfully change the Idaho sexual abuse statue of limitations laws. Later, Adam moved to Utah with his new wife to attend Brigham Young University. Soon thereafter tragedy stuck when he fell into the crosshairs of Mormon therapist Jodi Hildebrandt - at the recommendation of his Mormon bishop. Among other violations, Jodi Hildebrandt sought to paint Adam as an abuser (with no evidence), and violated Adam's client confidentiality by reporting him to the BYU Honor Code office, which led to the suspension of her therapist license around 2012. Adam believes it possible that Jodi Hildebrandt's efforts to smear his reputation were possibly motivated by a desire to retaliate against him for his whistleblowing as a Boy Scout. One important question we ask today - why was Elder Harold G. Hillam (Presidency of the LDS Quorum of the 70, and the President of the very same camp where Adam had been abused) deeply involved in Jodi Hildebrandt's attacks on Adam. This is Adam's story. Wondering what the new changes and updates to the BYU church school honor code are? On this episode of Mormonish we dive into the recent changes to the BYU honor code, dress and grooming standards, and the updated ecclesiastical endorsement questions at all BYU schools. The changes at the BYU schools are indicative of attitudes, views, and culture shifts seen in the church itself, which makes these updates even more interesting. The links to the changes are found in this article:https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/updated-ces-standards-students-closer-to-christWe appreciate our Mormonish viewers and listeners so much! My friend Andrew White (age 29, finishing up dental school, living in the Kansas City area) starts with knowing he was attracted to the same gender around age 5 and recognizing he was gay around 15. Andrew talks about the events that led him to join the Church at age 15 (including a powerful dream) and then doing everything to ‘become straight' including being active in the Church (becoming an Elder, going to BYU, temple endowment, and serving a mission)—all with the hope of “rewarded with being straight” and also wanting to help others feel the love of God and our Savior. Andrew then talks about the super difficult and painful church experiences on his mission and then at BYU which causes so much pain/trauma that Andrew felt his only path to healing was to resign from the Church in 2016. The things Andrew experienced on his mission and BYU are heartbreaking—church generated trauma is real for some members of our Church and something I've learned to validate even if I haven't experienced it directly. Andrew then talks about his life out of the Church (very good experience) and then his spiritual promptings to return to the Church which happened with his rebaptism on June 10, 2023 by his lifelong friend Michael. Andrew bears a strong testimony of God's love for all of His children and the need for inclusion and diversity as we create Zion. This is one of the most powerful podcasts we've done. I learned so much from Andrew about hope, healing, grace, and forgiveness. I'm grateful to so many in Andrew's circle (friends, father and stepmom, allies, local church leaders and general authorities) who love and support Andrew—and see his great heart and needed contributions to build Zion. Andrew talks about a healing visit to the BYU Honor Code office and how that positive experience helped “over-write the trauma.”. Andrew concludes how he has gone from wanting to be “rewarded with being straight” to the “blessing of being gay.” Thank you, Andew, for being on the podcast. You are so brave. Honored to have you on the podcast. Your story will help so many. You have a great life ahead of you!

We promise we're not apostate! We discuss the BYU Honor Code, go over its history, the issues behind it, and what can be done to fix it.
For the past 25-plus years, it has been the policy at Brigham Young University that it is OK to be gay, but not to act on it. That echoes the position taken by the school’s owner, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. There are clearly BYU students who are open about their LGBTQ identity while living the church’s standard of celibacy. But what about faculty and bosses? Ben Schilaty is a licensed therapist and BYU Honor Code administrator who has written his story in a newly released book titled “A Walk in My Shoes: Questions I’m Often Asked as a Gay Latter-day Saint,” put out by the church’s publishing house, Deseret Book. In this week’s show, Schilaty — who co-hosts with former Cougar mascot Charlie Bird the “Questions From the Closet” podcast — talks about coming to terms with his sexual orientation, his falling in love with another man, his commitment to living as a devout Latter-day Saint, the evolution of church LGBTQ policies, BYU’s short-lived Honor Code change, and his work at the faith’s flagship school.

Nephi passes away and Jacob is commanded to write down the things that are most precious. We discuss the three major sins that Jacob addresses to his people; love of riches and material possessions, sexual immorality, and pride. Can you seek after riches and be righteous? Why were some of the people of Nephi practicing plural marriage? We also discuss the history of plural marriage being practiced among members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. We discuss current honor code changes at BYU that are made by the leaders of the church and how we adapt to those changes.

We listen to your stories about the Honor Code. Some of the questions we discuss are: Does the Honor Code change? We give a brief history - women weren't allowed to wear jeans on campus until 1981. Why do people report their friends and roommates to the honor code office? Are students disincentivized to talk to their bishop and repent while in school for fear of being kicked out? In choosing to attend BYU, students agree to live the honor code. If they can't or don't want to they can go to a different school. BYU is a private institution that can make its own rules. However, the honor code may create unintentional adverse effects that should at least be discussed.
The 3 Mormons (currently known as Saints Unscripted) have many opinions on the topic of beards. Shelley thinks beards are gross and hates them. Ian thinks they are totally fine. Kwaku thinks they are reserved for ancient people. And they have many more opinions on a new show segment called “Rate That Beard”! On “Rate that Beard,” The 3 Mormons discuss their thoughts on different celebrities like Ryan Gosling, Robert Redford, Jack Black, Tom Selleck, and Andrew Garfield, and whether their beards and mustaches are awesome, or terrible. The 3 Mormons discuss the BYU Honor Code and they agree that when you go to BYU, you sign the honor code; you need to agree to those standards, including not having a beard. If you don’t like the rule, don’t go to the school. It’s just that simple. They recognize that sometimes there are pre-judgments to people with beards, but they all agree that if you want to grow a beard, then go for it. To them, it doesn’t matter if you have a beard.
