El acoso en línea a mujeres periodistas por años pasó inadvertido. Se minimizó, no se crearon protocolos y se trató como una violencia igual a las demás. Diferentes organizaciones como la UNESCO y Reporteros Sin Fronteras alertan en Francia sobre el vertiginoso aumento de casos y sobre las tareas que tienen por cumplir las salas de redacción, las redes sociales y el Estado. Es el inicio de la jornada laboral, Marie Krischen trabaja como periodista para Buzzfeed en Francia y el día anterior publicó una nota en la que señalaba la diferencia del tamaño de los bolsillos de los pantalones de las mujeres y de los hombres. De repente las notificaciones empiezan a llegar a su celular. No paran: mensajes privados, menciones, comentarios del tipo “suicídate” o “deberías ser despedida”. La violencia que recibió Marie es ciberacoso y es un problema que va en aumento. Según Reporteros Sin Fronteras (RSF), el 73% de la violencia machista a mujeres periodistas se da en internet. Además, la UNESCO reportó en el 2021 que 7 de cada 10 reporteras habían sufrido alguna vez agresiones en línea. En esos momentos lo que más le asustaba a Krischen era que la violencia escalara: “Conozco historias en las que las amenazas a periodistas salieron de lo virtual y fueron muy dañinas”, afirma Krischen. Los temores no son infundados. Según la UNESCO, el 20% de las mujeres que se enfrentaron a agresiones físicas, encontraron un vínculo entre éstas y el ciberacoso que recibieron. Elodie Viale, experta en el ciberacoso a mujeres periodistas y consultora para la organización Pen America, afirma que hay una conexión directa entre ser acosada en línea y ser atacada físicamente. “Por ejemplo, la periodista Daphne Caruana Galicia fue asesinada hace cuatro años en Malta, y antes de su muerte, definitivamente recibió insultos y amenazas en internet”, dice Viale. La violencia por ser mujer Son diferentes los insultos que puede llegar a recibir un hombre con respecto de una mujer periodista. Ellas especialmente tienen que lidiar con los mensajes con contenido sexual. Guilherme Canela, jefe del área de libertad de expresión y protección a periodistas en UNESCO, explica también que “las mujeres periodistas reciben violencias en línea relacionadas con su familia”. Este tipo de violencia la sufrió la periodista Nadia Daam en 2017, cuando fue atacada luego de que criticara un foro en línea que tenía comentarios machistas. “Recibí un mensaje que decía ‘hola cómo está' y al lado ponía el nombre de mi hija. Eso me heló la sangre. Me inscribieron contra mi voluntad en todas las páginas de citas y de porno con mis fotos”, cuenta Daam. Para Guilherme Canela, la violencia en línea contra mujeres reporteras se basa también en desacreditarlas “es una cuestión de 'yo te amenazo porque tú como mujer no deberías cubrir este tema'”. ¿Qué hace el Estado? En Francia el ciberacoso es un delito sancionable con dos años de cárcel y 30.000 euros de multa. En el caso de Nadia, han sido juzgadas dos personas de las siete contra las cuales se presentaron denuncias. En otros casos ni siquiera hubo condenas. También en 2017 la periodista Julie Harnau fue ciberacosada por un grupo neonazi, luego de que ella publicara una reseña de un bar en el que los encargados elogiaban la colonización. Por este caso a inicios del 2020 sólo hubo una condena. “Los acosadores se aprovechan de un sistema judicial que no está adaptado para castigarlos; interpuse cinco denuncias por injuria, amenaza de muerte y solo una por ciberacoso, pero esta no fue tenida en cuenta integralmente dentro del caso”, dice Harnau. Para Guilherme Canela de UNESCO la investigación de crímenes digitales es compleja y por ello requiere ciertas habilidades de la Fiscalía y de los ministerios públicos. Para él es clave “incluir estas capacidades, sobre cómo se adopta una perspectiva de género en los crímenes contra mujeres periodistas". En septiembre de este año la Comisión Europea emitió una serie de recomendaciones que buscan que los Estados miembros tomen acciones que favorezcan especialmente la protección de mujeres periodistas. A diferencia de otras regiones, Europa es una de las primeras en realizar este tipo de alertas. Las redes sociales Todo este ciberacoso ocurre, mayoritariamente, dentro de las redes sociales. Las dos principales compañías Facebook y Twitter aseguran que están mejorando sus políticas y mecanismos para que el acoso no suceda. Por ejemplo, Twitter puso a prueba un nuevo modo de seguridad, una función que bloquea temporalmente las cuentas durante siete días por usar lenguaje potencialmente dañino. Y por su lado, Facebook anunció recientemente que categorizaría a periodistas como figuras públicas involuntarias, con lo que aumentarán las protecciones contra el acoso. Sin embargo, para RSF las redes sociales carecen de buenos mecanismos de protección. Pavol Szalai, el encargado de la zona Europa de RSF, cuenta que presentaron una queja ante Facebook por prácticas comerciales engañosas, pues “se comprometen a proteger a los usuarios, pero hemos encontrado que no respetan esto en casos de acoso a periodistas”. La organización Pen América publicó este año una serie de recomendaciones con herramientas claras que las redes sociales pueden tomar para luchar contra el ciberacoso, entre estas está crear un botón de emergencia, para que si alguna periodista lo activa se pueda desencadenar un sistema de protección. Las salas de redacción La forma en la que las y los editores lidian con el ciberacoso puede marcar la diferencia en cómo la periodista se puede ver afectada. En el caso de Nadia Daam las empresas para las que trabajaba le ofrecieron protección y vigilancia a su casa y a la escuela de su hija. Y aunque Marie Krischen no recibió un esquema de protección, sí se sintió respaldada por su jefa. “Tuve suerte de que mi editora en jefe conocía muy bien este fenómeno. Entonces estuve respaldada por ella. Pero puede ser muy problemático cuando tu jefe no está enterado de este tipo de acoso, o a veces ni siquiera le importa”, afirma Krischen. Sin embargo, según las estadísticas de la UNESCO, Marie y Nadia forman parte de una minoría que fue apoyada por el medio para el que trabajaban. Según Guilherme Canela “un número muy bajo de periodistas que sufrieron violencia en línea se sintieron respaldadas, amparadas, auxiliadas por sus propias empresas de medios". Para Elodie Viale, consultora para Pen America, el problema parte de las narrativas que se manejan dentro de las mismas salas de redacción “en el periodismo no nos gusta hablar del bienestar. Decimos que tenemos que ser fuertes, especialmente las mujeres periodistas, ellas no se quieren quejar, porque van a pensar que eres débil y tienes que pelear contra eso”. Para Reporteros Sin Fronteras las salas de redacción han tardado en tomar medidas porque se ha minimizado el problema. “Deberían ser responsables de dar asistencia psicológica cuando las periodistas se enfrentan al ciberacoso. También podrían entrenar a sus periodistas en cómo responder, o tener expertos en las salas de redacción que puedan ayudar a manejar la situación”, afirma Pavol Szalai, de RSF. ¿Qué hacer? Mientras cada institución o empresa francesa involucrada en esta problemática toma cartas en el asunto, se puede, por un lado, acceder al Manual contra el acoso en línea de Pen América, que está disponible en español, inglés y francés. Y por otro lado también se puede denunciar el ciberacoso a Reporteros Sin Fronteras, quienes ofrecen ayuda psicológica y legal.

DAAM stopped airing in 2011 and after suffering from severe depression Paul decided to air a podcast on that very subject.“The Mental Illness Happy Hour” began in 2011. In her spare time, Marissa is also the Recycling and Solid waste program coordinator at Outagamie County, and a UWGB alum. Giveadaam is an organization in Green Bay dedicated to optimizing waste streams, introducing sustainable housing, and incorporating the local community.
