Edouard Clark is a Hospitality Tech recruiter and, in this podcast, he gives our listeners reasons to explore this career path and why the hospitality industry is still lagging behind in this fast-paced field.  Edouard has an international background, grew up in several countries, speaks three languages and used to play professional rugby. In this podcast, we ask Edouard about his early career in Hotel launches, HR management and his first forays into entrepreneurship.  In 2023, Edouard founded Wandery, a tech-driven micro-hostel concept in Germany and in 2024, he decided to take his HR skills and go into recruitment, eventually creating a recruitment business specializing in Hospitality Tech.    We ask Edouard about hospitality technology and what it entails, what kind of jobs are available and what kind of people are good at this kind of career.  Edouard gives our listeners advice about how hospitality executives can improve their business by finding the right kind of people to handle their technology needs.  We also ask him how people who are interested in this particular niche, can improve their chances of finding a rewarding position.  Finally, Edouard gives our audience some advice on how young people, who may be interested in this field, can improve their chances of working in this field.  Edouard Clark is a Hospitality Tech recruiter and founder of Wandery, a tech-driven micro-hostel.  He is uncannily good at connecting people, whether that's finding the perfect hire, sourcing a hotel acquisition, or recommending a tech stack. In 1865, French historian and abolitionist Edouard de Laboulaye proposed a monument to celebrate the upcoming centennial of American independence and the abolition of slavery. The project was delayed by the Franco-Prussian War, but finally got underway in 1875. The plan was for the people of France to fund the statue, while Americans would provide a site and build the pedestal.

There's growing evidence that in certain scenarios, every frontier AI system will deceive, cheat, or coerce their human operators. They do this when they're worried about being either shut down, having their training modified, or being replaced with a new model. Machery found that whether someone lives in a city or countryside often shapes their mindset more than their cultural background. Cosmopolitan environments expose individuals to diverse values, prompting greater openness and inquiry.AI ethics reveals cultural alignment. In studying attitudes toward AI in the U.S. and Taiwan, expected contrasts in privacy and collectivism were smaller than anticipated. The urban, global culture in both countries seems to produce surprisingly similar ethical concerns.The scientific method emerged from curiosity. The fusion of the maker tradition (doing) and the scholarly tradition (knowing) in the 13th–14th centuries helped birth experimentation, public dissection, and eventually modern science—all grounded in a spirit of curiosity.Philosophy begins with meta-curiosity. From Socratic questioning to Plato's dialogues and Aristotle's treatises, philosophy has always been about asking questions about questions—making “meta-curiosity” the core of the discipline.Only humans ask why. Machery notes that while animals can make requests, they don't seem to ask questions. Humans alone communicate assertions and engage in symbolic, imaginative, question-driven thought, setting us apart cognitively and culturally.

That's part of what Luis Favela and Edouard Machery set out to answer a couple years ago by surveying lots of folks in the cognitive sciences, and they concluded that as a field the term is used in a confused and unclear way. Confused and unclear are technical terms here, and Luis and Edouard explain what they mean in the episode.
