Let's walk together, step by step, in this daily journey of faith! TODAY'S DEVOTION: He's angry. These teachers are a bunch of fakes. He's angry because these teachers of His Word ought to be offering people something real, something true. He's angry because they're a bunch of religious, self-righteous, self-serving hypocrites, and Jesus is none too happy about it. They're telling lies about God, and the main one is a lie of separation. God is separate, he's distant, and he's angry. He's angry until you perform the right religious duties, until you wash your hands the right way, until you wash your cup in just the right way, until you give the right amount of everything that you own in just the right way. Even the herbs in your garden and a thousand other things like this were all used as a way of ensuring that you knew that God was separate from you, that he was angry with you. And this message of separation served these guys well. They leveraged it for coercion and control, for power, prestige, and money. They used this lie to become important in the eyes of those with power. They liked to walk around with their flowing robes in the marketplaces. They liked when important people, powerful people, recognized them and honored them. All the while the people suffer. Jesus looked at this and declared it hogwash. He called them hypocrites, snakes, vipers. In effect, Jesus says, you say that you speak for God, but you don't know God. If you knew God, you would know his justice, not yours, which is so rarely just. You would know his love—his love which declares that God is not separate. Rather, God is here. He is with us, and God is for all people. He is wanting his people and his priests who use his name to tell the truth, to demonstrate the love and justice of God, to live in the reality of the God who is with us, the God who is their present king, because it's true and the world so desperately needs it. If you read the Bible and you're left with a God who is separate, distant, petty, and angry, more concerned with how much turmeric you tithe than he is about you loving your neighbor and knowing that you are loved, then you've been sold a lie and you have completely missed the point of who he is. Because the point of his word is to show us that God is for us, not against us. That God is good. That God is not petty, but abounding in grace and mercy. That God is present and he is full of love. This was the message of all the prophets. God. God is with you, people. Wake up. Wake up to the God who is with you. He's angry that religion has become a way to crush people's spirits with unbearable religious demands rather than something that sets them free and makes them new. Jesus begins this reading in Luke by telling us that God is something completely different than what the Pharisees are selling. Jesus says God's not like that. God is good. When you ask him for good things, he doesn't give you scorpions and snakes. He's a good father. Don't let circumstances and the seeming delay in God's response to your need dissuade you from the truth of his kindness. Like the man who's knocking and seeking and asking for bread, God comes through. So keep asking, keep knocking, keep seeking. God's not angry with you. Don't let others or the circumstances prevent you from knowing the kind of father that you really have. Your Father knows what it's like to give his children good gifts. Earthly fathers know what it's like to do that. How much more will our good Father give good gifts if we ask for them? Jesus is angry at the evil in this world that keeps people from knowing and experiencing his loving kindness. God's not angry with you. What's the gift the good Father is giving? He's giving himself. He's giving the Holy Spirit. How much more will your Heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him? He is offering himself to be with us and in us. Pray that God will renew your mind so that you will no longer see your Father as separate from you and angry with you, but rather as good and kind. He wants to give you everything. May your soul, may my soul, may we know this well today. That's my prayer. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.   Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Where there is injury, pardon.  Where there is doubt, faith. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love.  For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life.  Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... TODAY'S DEVOTION: Jesus is telling a secret, and he is thrilled at the thought of it. In Luke 10, verse 21, we find Jesus filled with joy through the Holy Spirit, saying, "O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and revealing them to the childlike. Yes, Father, it pleased you to do it this way." This secret fills both the Father and the Son with great joy. So what is this secret? The secret is Jesus himself. He is the way to God, the way to life. He is what every heart is looking for. Jesus is the King, and he is proclaiming the kingdom. Jesus is the secret to it all. It's not the law, not traditions or piety, but living in the name, the power, and the presence of God. The God who is with us and for us. When Jesus sends out the 72, notice he tells them not to take anything with them—no bag, no money, no staff, nothing but his name. The only thing they are equipped with is the name of Jesus. The "with God life" isn't about our resources, our money, our provisions, but only about him. They are to go with his name, his message, his blessing, and his presence to the world. This is the "with God life"—a life of utter reliance on God, of being available to his presence and his agenda. When we allow him to lead, we end up fulfilling the law, becoming people of mercy, like the Good Samaritan. We participate with Christ; his power works in and through us. We're not the hero—Christ in us is. That's the secret: his presence in you, which Paul says is your hope of glory. Let's live in the reality of Christ in us. Let's awaken to the wonder of stepping out into the day simply in his name—not striving, not pushing or fretting, but knowing our real life is hidden with God in Christ. Our truest self is found in learning more and more to love God, our neighbor, and ourselves. Today, walk with him, eyes and ears wide open to his presence in you. Let him lead, and let him fill you with his joy. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, for my daughters, for my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. What do you think the prevailing message of Jesus is? You would think that'd be a pretty easy question to answer. But I'm guessing that in a room full of people, there'd be many different kinds of answers to that question. But in Luke 9, as well as throughout the Gospels and in the Book of Acts, we're told many times very plainly what that message is. The central prevailing message of the Bible and of Jesus is the kingdom of God. The kingdom of God is here and the king is Jesus. And this king has come to reconcile the world to God. His rule and authority are being made known wherever he goes. He uses that in the feeding of the multitudes, the healing of the demon possessed, the opening up of the eyes of the blind, the healing of the lame, those who can't speak and hear. He is the king. And wherever he goes, the kingdom is showing up. Citizenship in this kingdom is being made available to ordinary people. His life is being offered and extended to the whole world, to us broken folks. And the good news of that kingdom is that God has made a way through Christ to reconcile us, to make us new, to make us citizens and bring us under his rule and reign, to make us his. By his death on the cross, he has reconciled us to himself. And now by the Spirit of God, he has empowered us to manifest his kingdom life, to live it out, the very life of his Son. As Jesus walks with us through our life, the kingdom shows up. The result of his kingdom life in us is freedom, joy, love, the fruit of the Spirit. And when we do that, we are set free. We're set free from our past, our regrets, our shame. And we live in the joy of forgiveness and our adoption and inclusion in the very life and love of God. The one sitting on the throne said, look, I'm making everything new, everything. And we see it wherever Jesus goes. There is power in the King. There's power in his abiding life with us. And this king has made you his own. You are a citizen and he is your king. Let us live as citizens of the kingdom of God. Let us embrace this message of the abiding and saving life, the reconciling life of Christ. Let us be ambassadors of this message of our great King. Let's tell people that they have been reconciled in Christ. See it, believe it, repent, change your mind and step into the life that is yours. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's a prayer that I have for my own family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. Something unthinkable is being asked of Abraham. He is being asked to offer his one and only son, the son that he loves, as a sacrifice on the mountain. It is a test of obedience that, at first glance, seems unimaginable. But perhaps, in Abraham's world, it was not altogether unthinkable. The cultures surrounding him, and indeed, cultures throughout history, have at times required the blood of a human to appease or manipulate their gods. Abraham would have known these stories and expectations. But he also knew something else—the God who called him, who promised him a son even in extreme old age, who reminded him of blessings as countless as the stars. This God who walked with Abraham in his darkest, most barren moments was not like any of the others. Abraham had learned to walk with and trust God, and he believed that this God was not bloodthirsty or capricious, nor distant or angry and waiting to pounce. Abraham believed God was good—the God who meets us in our need, our shame, our barren places, the God who provides. On that mountain, God makes Himself known as Jehovah Jireh, the Lord who provides. He is not a God who requires us to atone by our own blood, or by the blood of those we love. No, God has a different way. Instead, it is He who provides the offering. The Father does not kill His Son—instead, the Son offers Himself, and is killed by humanity. Through His offering, He overcomes evil, wins the victory for us, conquering sin and darkness, and making a way for us to live. Abraham reasoned that, even if Isaac died, God was able to revive him—because Abraham knew, at the core, that God is good and can be trusted with our very lives. That knowledge—the character of God—changes everything. God comes to us in our lowest, most hopeless places, and brings resurrection, new life. On Mount Moriah, and then on the cross, God Himself provides what we cannot. He gives us victory, healing, hope. My prayer today is that my eyes would open to see as Abraham saw: the character of our God who provides, who is trustworthy, who is good. That I would walk with Him and know the freedom, the life, and the joy of being loved and provided for by Him. And that is my prayer for my family—for my wife, my daughters, and my son. And that is my prayer for you. May it be so. Maybe, like John sitting in prison, you feel forgotten or overlooked. You might have been obedient, zealous—done all that God has asked of you—yet circumstances haven't gone the way you would have hoped. Maybe you wonder, "Why isn't God showing up for me? Why isn't He bailing me out?" That's where John the Baptist found himself—hearing stories of Jesus healing Gentiles, raising the dead, and still waiting for God to act in his own life. He sends friends to Jesus and asks, "Are you the one? Are you the plan, or should we wait for someone else?" And Jesus' reply comes back: Yes, I am the plan! Just look—the blind see, lepers are healed, the deaf hear, and the good news is preached to the poor. Jesus' answer is to point to what God is doing, to the evidence of the kingdom breaking in. He says, don't turn away in disbelief. Don't believe the lie that God is holding back, that He is vindictive, petty, or unconcerned about you. That is never the truth. The truth is seen completely in the face of Jesus. God is not against us. He's not withholding. He is with us—abiding, forgiving, loving, liberating. He is healing our brokenness, opening our eyes, restoring us to new life. He is the plan for mending this broken world. He is the plan for mending your broken world, your broken heart. Don't let your circumstances turn you away from believing in Him. Remember the woman who comes to Jesus despite her shame, her reputation, her circumstances. TODAY'S DEVOTION: He is so much better than we think. God comes to Abraham and promises him things that are almost too good to be true: to make him the father of many nations, to bless all the people of the world through him, to give him the land of Canaan. And yet, to Abraham, this promise seems too much, almost unbelievable. So Abraham and Sarai come up with their own version, trying to make God's promise more "possible" by taking matters into their own hands with a surrogate son. Isn't that what we do? We often limit what we think God can do; we imagine a version of God and his goodness that fits into our own expectations and fears. We settle for what we believe is reasonable, what seems achievable, rather than trusting in the immense, extravagant goodness of God. But God is so much better than we dare to think. Jesus is the proof of that. As Hunter points out, Jesus describes a way of life that is greater than what most would even dare to attempt: loving your enemies, doing good to those who hate you, blessing those who curse you, and praying for those who hurt you. These are not humanly reasonable reactions—these are divine ways of living, God's ways, the way of the kingdom. If you do these things, Jesus says, you are truly acting as children of God. Why? Because God himself is kind to the unthankful and even to the wicked. He is compassionate. That is who he is. And yet, how often do we scale that version of God down? We put limitations on his love, his kindness, his grace, as if he can only be good to those who perform, behave, or believe just right. But Jesus pushes us to imagine God as better than anything we have dared to believe. The God Jesus reveals is bigger, better, and more loving than our imaginations, anxieties, or fears have allowed. When we let this truth soak in at the beginning of this year, when we dare to believe that God is as good as Jesus shows us, something happens: we begin to live differently. We begin to love our enemies. We begin to do good to others, even when it doesn't benefit us. We begin to live as children of the Most High, reflecting his character into the world. That's a prayer that Hunter has for his own soul, for his family, and for you too: that we would begin to imagine, trust, and live into the extraordinary goodness of God. That God is more than we've hoped, and his love is more than enough for us. May it be so. That's the question that comes to the surface as we listen to Jesus respond to the religious leaders in Luke 5. They were disturbed, unsettled by Jesus and his disciples, and how different they seemed from the expected religious norm. Why all the eating and drinking, the lightness and celebration? Shouldn't holy people look more somber, more weighed down by the gravity of spiritual things? But Jesus invites us into a startling possibility—when the bridegroom is with us, it's not a time for gloom. It's not the season for heavy restriction or ritual sadness. It's time to live, to eat and drink, to walk in the abundant life and the joyful celebration of his presence. There certainly is a time for mourning, for fasting, Jesus says. There are seasons of loss and waiting and longing. And yet, even then—for those who belong to Jesus—those seasons are now carried out in the presence and company of the One who is our comforter, our wisdom, our light. He walks with us even through the valley of the shadow of death. He prepares a table for us, a banquet of grace, even when we are surrounded by difficulty, sorrow, or even our enemies. This is the new wine that Jesus brings, the unexpected freedom and fullness of life that flows from walking with the bridegroom. It is a new thing—and sometimes, we may struggle to accept the joy, the lightness, the new way Jesus calls us into. The religious self in us may want to revert back to old patterns, the requisite religious gloom. But Jesus calls us forward, into a childlike, unselfconscious, abundant life, alive to his joyous presence. He's making all things new, and that includes you and me. The prayer of my own heart is that I will live today awake to the bridegroom's presence. That I might even surprise myself with the freedom, joy, and love that spring up when I remember who is with me—the bright and morning star, my joy, my life. In sorrow or in celebration, in fasting or in feasting, may I choose to live as a loved child of God who walks in the newness Christ has made. That's my prayer for my soul, for my family, and for you today. May it be so. Let's step forward together, grounded in the assurance that we are deeply loved—no doubt about it. TODAY'S DEVOTION: He's outside the bounds and borders of where we expect him to be. He is present with those that we think are disqualified from his care, his healing and his love. They're from places like Zarephath in Sidon, or from the land of Syria, gentile lands, borderlands among people that are our enemies, people that we think are enemies of God, people we think are headed for destruction. And yet here's Jesus preaching His first sermon in a church service and proclaiming that God is with them too. That God's favor, His healing, his mercy, his grace is with those people too. This made no sense to his listeners. It offended their religious sensibilities to the core. So much so that Luke tells us that they tried to kill him afterwards. But Jesus will not be stopped. He will not be silenced, and his message will continue to be proclaimed. Jesus comes to show us that God is not a tribal deity. No, he is the God of all tribes. He is the God of all the earth. And his love for the world and its people is reaching into places that our religious minds and our offended minds say are outside the bounds of God's grace. So let's beware of drawing borders around God's love and his grace. Let's look carefully at how Jesus begins His ministry here in his very first sermon. And let us understand well what the Spirit of God is saying to his people. The good News is for the poor. Captives are released, the blind are seeing, the oppressed are set free. And the time of the Lord's favor has come. And Jesus says that that favor has come to everyone, inside and outside of whatever borders we have constructed. And that is good news for all of us. And the prayer of my own heart today is that I will participate with him in seeing and proclaiming and experiencing the favor and love of God in my own life and in the lives of all people. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. After the flood, Noah released a dove three times in search of life and hope beyond the judgement brought upon the earth. The first time, the dove found nothing but water and returned, a sign that death still prevailed. Seven days later, Noah tried again, and this time the dove returned with a fresh olive branch—a miraculous sign, a picture of God's recreation, his making all things new in seven days. Life was returning. Yet it was on the third release that the dove did not come back; it had found life and no longer needed to return to the safety of the boat. Centuries later, this same symbol—the dove—appears again, descending upon Jesus in the waters of the Jordan River. But this time, no proof is needed: the one who is life itself has come. Jesus stands in the place of fulfillment, greater than Abraham, greater than Moses, greater than all the names and legacies listed throughout Scripture. The Father declares him to be his Son; John announces that he will take away the sin of the world. Jesus is the true and lasting proof of life for all of us. This is a message the dying world longs to hear—a message we ourselves are invited to believe and participate in. The prayer for today is to participate more deeply in this life, to declare his message faithfully to a world longing for hope, longing for the waters of life. TODAY'S DEVOTION: God comes to us, just as we are. Sometimes we think we have to get ourselves straightened out or cleaned up—at least a little—before we can hope or expect God to draw near, to love us, to do anything for us. But that's not the gospel at all. We are the ones who hide and withdraw in our shame, in our delusion and darkness. He is not the one who hides from us. In today's scripture, we see Adam and Eve banished from the garden. It's easy to read these passages and imagine that they were sent away because God's holiness makes it impossible for him to be in the presence of sin or sinners. But that's not the picture the Bible gives us. God banishes Adam and Eve, not because he despises them or cannot bear being near them, but in mercy—to keep them from reaching out for the Tree of Life in their blindness, in a way that could not be undone. God isn't so holy that he must separate himself from us. He is so holy that he constantly moves toward us, into our darkness, into our wounds, our delusions, our hiding places. He comes to restore us, to cover us, to open our eyes. He covers Adam and Eve with garments; he meets Cain in his wandering; he draws near again and again. That is his character. This is the gospel: God comes to us as we are, in our delusion and blindness, lost and hiding, and he restores us. His holiness is a holy love—a consuming love, a purifying love—that burns away all that is not of love and brings us back to himself. That love sent Jesus to the cross to break the power of sin, to open our eyes, so we can see who we are in him, his beloved children. The news, my friend, is better than we've thought. God has not banished you because he despises you or cannot stand to be in your presence. He has acted so that a way of restoration could be made—and that is exactly what he's done in Christ. That's how the story begins. God created man and woman, and they were without shame. But in the chapters ahead, we are going to see that they have been robbed of a life without shame. We'll soon read all about it. We'll also read about the devastation that ensues. But as we read through the whole story of God, we're going to find that it doesn't end there. No, that would be bad news. But this is good news. And the good news is that God has sent his one and only Son. The second Adam. He's going to do everything necessary for us to get back to a life without shame, a life lived with God. That's the whole point of this amazing story of the Bible—that this has been given to us. God has come to us at our lowest, the most shame-filled places of our lives. Christ has come to meet us there. And he offers us there a real, abundant, shame-free life. Some of you went through this last year carrying a lot of shame. But this year can be different. This year you can come to him—not just pages in a book, but to Christ himself, who is present with you and in you. And you can begin to open up your heart to him so that he might set you free from all the ways that shame has crippled your life. The prayer that I have for my own soul today is that you and I would have the same spirit and heart that Mary had when she heard the good news. She said yes to it. She said yes. May it be unto me as you have just said. Maybe she didn't understand all of it—no doubt she didn't. But she was ready to say yes to God. And maybe that's something that you can do today, even though you don't understand all things. You can say yes to him who does. You can say yes. If you've heard, like I heard today in the reading, that God intends for us to live without shame, then say yes to that. If you have heard, as I have heard today, that Jesus has come to take that shame away, to take away any barrier that would keep us from a life with him, then maybe you and I can both say yes to that. Let me encourage you to say it even in your unbelief. Go ahead and say it now. Yes, God, I believe. Help me in my unbelief. I say yes to your presence in my life. I say yes to your forgiveness. I say yes to the hope that I can live without shame and in your strength. Maybe you just need to whisper it to yourself. Maybe you need to shout it out loud. It's important that we begin wherever we can. And maybe today that beginning is simply a whisper, a faint hope that maybe it's true, that maybe we can be free. Maybe God really is with us. Maybe Christ really does live in you. Maybe you really are loved by God. Maybe there's a way to live without shame. And to that I say yes. That's a prayer that I have for my own soul. That's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. It will be sweet like honey and it will be bitter in your stomach. This whole fantastical episode of visions begins with John being told to eat the book. It's only after he eats the scroll, which is both sweet and bitter, that he is given access to a behind the scenes vision—the machinations and happenings of the spiritual world. There are mysteries here that are yet unlocked. Many people spend their lifetime trying to decipher dates and times and meanings of words and particular visions and drawing one for one correlations between things that are happening right here, right now, and yet their ultimate deciphering can only happen for those who eat the book. Eating the book is a precursor to understanding God's vision. And that's true for our lives as well. It's only as we abide in him, the living Word, as we allow his written word to give us a vision for what God is saying and doing here and now, what he has for our life. The ultimate decoding can only happen for those who dwell in him, for those who taste the Word of life, to listen to him and his message and obey what he says. Then God will provide for us a step by step, unfolding on a need to know basis. Notice the angel tells him not to write down the vision he sees. He's told to keep it a secret because God reveals to us what we need to know, when we need to know it. Ours is to take the next step, to see the next vision that God has placed before us. Ours is to take and partake of him. Ours is to stand back in awe and worship Him. This story that we read about and we find ourselves in is going somewhere. It's not just an endless cycle of the same thing over and over again. No, God is culminating things. This book is showing us that. The angel says there is no more delay. Things are coming to a rapid conclusion. We can be sure that God is on the move and we are to be on the move with him, taking each step with him, each and every day. Understand that it is only as we partake of him, we eat his word, we live in communion with him, that we will begin to understand the vision that God has for your life. So eat his word, eat his flesh, partake of him, receive from him visions, direction, courage and hope. Take the next step with him, living life in him. And that's a prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the only thing I can really make sense of in these passages. And that's the prayer that I have for my family too, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: If this scroll isn't opened, then how are we going to make sense of this story? The story of human history demands that this scroll be opened. The story of life demands that justice and righteousness prevail. Some sense must be drawn from all the senseless evil in this world. John falls into despair at ref​lecting on the possibility that there will be no judgment, no true reconciling of all things—a restoration when God is all and in all. He wonders whether perhaps it's all meaningless. He wonders whether there will be a response from God in the end. John cries out at the thought. He cries out for someone to make sense of the wreckage. And in this final moment, when it appears that all is lost, an elder insists that John stop weeping. He insists that there is One who is worthy and able. It is the One sitting on the throne. He can open the scroll because he has stepped into the darkness, the despair, the loss, into death and into the grave. He is the Lamb of God who has taken away the sin of the world. He has offered himself on the cross, and in that offering, he defeats death by death in order that he might rescue those who are captive to sin, death, and the grave. He's come to rescue the lost—Adam and all of us—and draw us into his saving life. In his body, he accomplished this victory. You might be like John today, weeping because you think there's no way to make sense of what's happened in your life. The elder, John, and I all want to remind you—look to the Lamb. He's worthy. Look at him. See what he has done. He has won a victory for you, for us, for the world that will transform our weeping into absolute worship and adoration. Let's ask the Spirit to help us see the Lamb who opens the scroll. That's a prayer that I have for my own soul. That's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's a prayer I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: There's someone sitting on the throne. The one on the throne is described as brilliant. The description is far more elaborate than that. But it's clear that it's not me and it's not you sitting there. Here in this last book of the Bible, John pulls back the curtain for us so that we can see the One who has been at work since the very beginning. All the plot lines are converging on him. John wants us to see that the plot and the point of the whole thing is this one who is sitting on the throne. The world is seen in its proper alignment when Christ is at the center and on his throne. This is how the whole story and universe was always intended to be. Romans 11:36 says, Everything comes from him and exists by his power and is intended for his glory. All glory to him forever and ever. And in Acts 17:28, it says, for in him we live and move and have our very being. It all makes sense when the curtain is pulled back and we realize that he is the center of it all. With him at the center, things are in their proper alignment. Today, we're called to surrender our usurped place at the center of our life and to see him for who he is and to worship Him. He is the one who's made a way for all of us to find a way to life. And he came into this world to offer himself as a sacrifice for us. He came for all of us, whether we recognize it or not. He has come at his Father's bidding in the anointing of the Spirit to gather us into the embrace of love that is shared between the Father and the Son and the Spirit. So today let us see him, the one whose eyes are like flames of fire, whose hair is white like wool, with the gold sash across his chest, his feet like burnished bronze, and whose voice thunders like mighty ocean waves. Let's see him. The one who humbled himself with such contrition that he came to us as a little baby, that we might know him, walk with him, love him, worship him, and know his joy. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul today. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. Hunter reflects on Psalm 119 and the remarkable declaration of the beauty and power of God's Word. "I have hidden your word in my heart that I may not sin against you." For years, we've gathered here on this podcast—day after day—reciting aloud the wonderful works of God, tucking His Word into our hearts. Why? Because God's Word helps us, not only to resist sin, but to live fully and freely. But the gifts of the Word go far beyond helping us resist sin. Psalm 119 lays out a long litany of the treasures that God's Word brings to our lives: it revives and encourages the heart, keeps us honest, fills us with happiness, rids us of shame, renews with goodness and hope, comforts us in times of trouble, anchors our souls, holds evil at bay, teaches judgment and knowledge, sustains us with joy, brings us true life, and makes us wise. His arrival was as humble as anyone could imagine—a tiny baby born to a couple of teenagers, the mother a virgin, in a small town, in a manger. Who could have imagined that God would arrive in such a lowly way? But Jesus' gentle entrance brought back light into a world darkened by sin. At first, perhaps only family, some shepherds, and a handful of wise men took notice, yet the dawn had come. As we read the words of First John, we draw a line from the birth of Jesus, the light of the world, all the way back to Genesis, chapter one, when God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. God saw that the light was good. The God who spoke light into darkness has now made this light shine in our hearts, so we might know the glory of God seen in the face of Jesus Christ. Consider today, as you look upon the birth of Jesus, how the light of Christ has entered into your own dark places. Let that light stand in your heart and offer it to others. It's a unique peace, his peace. Not the fleeting peace the world tries to offer, not the absence of trouble or the guarantee of comfort, but a settled confidence that comes from him alone. It's easy for our minds to be troubled by so many things—our future, our families, our finances, our health. Yet Jesus, the living Word, the miracle worker, the one who raised the dead and gave himself for all humanity, comes to us and says, "I have a gift for you." He, the Creator of all things, offers to quiet those anxieties and bring peace to the places in our lives that are unsettled, wounded, or confused. This isn't just a theoretical peace—it's an invitation to open ourselves to the Holy Spirit, the Comforter and Advocate Jesus promised would be with us. The Spirit helps us to recognize and receive the gift that Jesus is giving—a peace not as the world gives, but as only he can give. We are invited to take time, especially today, to sit with this generous gift and allow ourselves to live in the light, joy, and love of it. We are invited to let this peace shape our hearts and lives. That's a prayer Hunter has for his own soul. It's the prayer he has for his family. And it's the prayer he has for you. There was a stone in front of Lazarus' tomb—a barrier between the grave and life, between the living and the dead. And that stone is an important symbol in this story. For we all have a stone that God is wanting to move away in our lives. What's yours? What's standing between you and life? Lazarus came to life when Jesus spoke his name inside that grave. But the stone still had to be moved away. There was still a barrier, something that stood between him and the life that waited—and the love of those who stood on the other side. Trapped alive in a tomb is no life at all. And yet this is what many Christians experience in their lives. That stone must be rolled away at Jesus' command. And indeed it was. A man once dead is alive. Now there is nothing in the way. Now he is truly alive. And there is no life like resurrection life. For Lazarus, life after the grave was surely sweet indeed. What stone needs to be removed in your life? What is still standing in the way, preventing you from experiencing all that God has for you? Don't ignore, don't shut your ears to his command to come forth. He's done everything that's necessary for you to walk forward in life. The stone has been rolled away. He has raised you from the grave. Now is your time to begin to learn to walk in resurrection life. So come forth. Come forth today. Take that step. Move forward in faith, trusting that God is indeed the God of resurrection, the one who raises us from the dead. He has removed all that needs to be moved, and he stands on the other side ready to embrace you, to walk with you into your new life. Hallelujah. That's a prayer I have for my own soul. That's a prayer I have for my family, for my loved ones. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: The salvation the world is dying for has come. The "living waters" that Jesus spoke of, that salvation, isn't something confined to a religious ceremony or contained within a temple or an altar. It emerges from the heart of God Himself. The drought, the dryness, that our rebellion has brought on—it's over. The longing for life-giving water, for true hope and renewal, ends with the arrival of Jesus. He stands before us as the very source of life. It is not a ritual we must perform or a law we must perfectly uphold. It's a relationship, an invitation to come and drink deeply from what God is offering. We hear about the Festival of Shelters, with its beautiful and meaningful ceremony: the priest descending to the pool, retrieving water, and pouring it out as a sign of God's provision and promise. Scripture from Isaiah is recited, the anticipation and longing for Messiah fills the air. Then, at the highest point of the feast, Jesus steps forward and boldly declares: "Anyone who believes in me may come and drink, for the Scriptures declare that rivers of living water will flow from his heart." In doing so, He upstages the festival, showing that He is the fulfillment of all these promises—the very fountain of salvation, the One Isaiah spoke of, the One for whom all creation has been waiting. This is the good news: it is not about striving or earning or endless searching. He is here, the source of life, and He simply asks us to come—to bring our thirst, our emptiness, our need—and to receive. The triune God, the very Creator, beckons us to draw near and to be filled. These rivers of living water are for everyone who believes. Let us never stop drinking, never stop receiving what He freely gives. That's the prayer for my own soul, that I will see it and receive it and drink deep. It's the prayer I carry for my family, my wife, my daughters, and my son. And it's the prayer that I hold for you. May we all recognize the invitation, may we drink deeply of Him, and may we find our life, our joy, and our hope, in the One who is the fountain of salvation. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: He is the bread from heaven. What is it that you're looking for? Where do we go when we hunger for life, when our souls thirst for meaning, hope, and transformation? In John 5 and 6, we encounter Jesus in the midst of crowds who search for healing, wholeness, and something that fills more deeply than the loaves and fishes on a hillside. He meets a man longing for restoration after thirty-eight years of brokenness, speaks words that defy the boundaries of the Sabbath, and calls himself equal with God—upending what people thought they knew about the source of life. Jesus invites us to receive something beyond the ordinary: union with the living God. "I am the bread of life," he says. "Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty." This bread is not simply sustenance for the body but the very life of Christ offered for the whole world. He is the true bread—the one who has what we're truly longing for. We do not draw near to Jesus because we are especially good or worthy. We come, hungry and broken, because the Father draws us. In this season, we remember the bread, the Word, that comes down from heaven—Jesus himself. He offers his flesh so that we might share in his life, be transformed by his love, and partake in his victory over death. The Father is at work, drawing us to the one who fills our deepest need. Let us open our hearts to see Jesus for who he is—the bread from heaven, our sustainer, our source of life. Let us receive what he has offered. Let us follow him, be united to him, and find transformation in his love. This is my prayer: for my own soul, for my family, and for you. May it be so. He has not only identified with us by taking on our humanity but has also embraced us so that we might share in the very life and joy He has with the Father, through the Spirit. This is the depth of His love, and in that love, we find our true value—how deeply we are loved and cherished by God. Let us pray for eyes to see the signs and hearts to believe what they show us: that all is pointing to Jesus, to His love, His sacrifice, His inclusion of us into God's very life. By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world's corruption caused by human desires. Because God fulfilled his promise to Abraham, that Abraham would become the father of many nations, the peoples of the world would recognize and understand the fatherhood of God. They would see that they have been included, adopted into a relationship with the Creator of all the world. Because of this promise and what Christ has done, we share in God's divine nature. That's something that will and should blow our minds. Peter says that we share in God's divine nature. And Peter wants us to participate in that. To participate in what is. To acknowledge and see and live in the joy of what is your inclusion into the life and love of God. Because God was true to his word. God did what he said he would do. He came and he rescued us and made us his own. So let's live in that, my friends. The triune God sent his Son to come and rescue us, to awaken us to who we really are, to who he is, what he has done and who we really are. We are those that share in his divine nature. We are children of God, made in the image of God. God has come to reveal this, to make this known, to let it become the thing that animates our lives, sets us free and gives us joy. So let's do that. It's as we live in the reality of this amazing truth and good news, we will indeed escape the corruptions of this world. We will not give in to the lusts of the world, the sinfulness of our flesh. No, we will be walking in the Spirit. That's the desire and the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that is the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. Peter admonishes the church to kiss one another, to offer each other a kiss of love. Christ offers us a kiss today, too. Even in the reading of this word, we can receive a kiss of love, his embrace. We can receive the kindness that he offers us. That's what we have in Christ. And our story will end just like this letter ends, with a kiss and an embrace from him. Judas offered Jesus a kiss, but it was a kiss of betrayal. All of us have offered God that same kiss of betrayal, in one way or another. We once were enemies of God, opposed to Him. But God was never opposed to us. And he was never our enemy. And he does not deal with us as our sins deserve. He does not betray us as we have betrayed Him. He does not even turn away from us in the wake of our betrayals. No. He does something absolutely scandalous. He offers us love in exchange for our betrayal. He doesn't pay back in kind. He gives us instead a kiss of love. And that love cost Him. The price was paid not in silver and gold, but with his precious blood shed for all of us—the sinless, spotless Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Because Christ gave us a kiss of love for our betrayal, Peter says we must show sincere love for each other as brothers and sisters. You are cleansed from your sins when you obeyed the truth. So now he says you must show sincere love for each other. Love each other deeply with all your heart. That's verse 22. This letter ends with a kiss. So let's do that. I know that right now is kind of a strange time to be thinking about, let alone actually trying to do what the Scriptures are admonishing us to do here. It might be a real long time before we offer each other a kiss of love at our churches. But there are other ways that we can show kindness to each other. We can embrace each other regardless of our differences. We can do what Peter has said here. We can do what the Spirit implores us to do, even if for a while we have to hold back from actually physically kissing one another. But the point still stands, doesn't it? It does indeed. Christ offers us that kiss today. Go ahead and receive it. Allow yourself to receive that. You might cringe at first at the thought for a whole host of reasons, but just take a moment, will you, and receive God's kiss, God's embrace of you. May it be so. But the Good Shepherd does not leave us lost; he pursues us. God was not content with the ninety-nine—he sought after the one, every wandering soul. That is the good news: God's actions, his love, reach for the whole world. Behold the Lamb of God, slain for the sins of all—the enormity of this gospel is that it is for everyone, without exception. Sometimes this news seems so good it almost defies belief, and James knows this. He warns us not to forget who we truly are; not to look into the mirror of God's word and then forget our reflection when we turn away. In Christ, God chose to give birth to us, making us his prized possession, his beloved children. But it is easy to forget—especially when the truth seems too good. We fall back into the old lie: that God is distant, disapproving, far off. James wants to remind us how loved, how valued, how seen we are. God offered himself for us, count us among his treasured flock. This love is for all people and it's so immense we might struggle to take it in. Yet this, James says, is the truth: you are the beloved of God. Look deeply, look Christologically, at the word of God—see all scripture through Jesus, for he reveals both the Father's heart and our true identity. Invite the Holy Spirit to help you see it. The reality is better than you've imagined: you are loved, pursued, made new in Christ. My prayer for myself, for my family, and for you is that after seeing who you are in the mirror of God's word, you will not forget, but reflect that love in this world—in your relationships, in your home, everywhere God leads you. TODAY'S DEVOTION: We're making our migration home through all the seasons of life. We used to live in a place where we had sandhill cranes that we could watch out our back window. Those cranes sometimes migrate all the way across the Bering Strait to Siberia to their mating grounds, where it all began. When the winter begins, they'll make their journey back. These days in December are some of the longest nights and coldest days of the year. But starting December 21, the days will slowly grow longer and the nights shorter. These amazing cranes will begin to make their way home, drawn by an inexplicable call, some kind of life within them, drawing them back. And so it is with us. You may be in a winter season where the nights are long and the days are too short, but don't forget that you are on a journey too. And that journey will lead all of us home. The writer of Hebrews wants to remind us all that the world is not our permanent home. He says this in Hebrews 13:15: "So let us go out to him outside the camp and bear the disgrace he bore. For this world is not our permanent home. We are looking forward to a home yet to come. Therefore, let us offer through Jesus a continual sacrifice of praise to God, proclaiming our allegiance to his name." So let's keep going forward, setting our focus and our heart on our permanent home. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. And now our faith enables us to see that and to participate in what God is doing now here among us, to walk with Him and to continue to know and discover His heart—not only for us, but for the whole world. And the prayer of my own heart today is that I will walk by faith, that I will participate with Him in His purposes and His plan and in His joy. TODAY'S DEVOTION: He is an anchor for your soul. The most real, the most essential part of your identity is your soul. Our flesh, our bodies, they fail and one day will be no more as they are. But our soul will remain. Our soul is eternal. Hebrews 6:19 says, this hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God's inner sanctuary. It's so easy for us to lose ourselves in this storm-filled world, but the truest thing about your soul is found and anchored in your union with Christ. This anchor is held fast in the most secure and private and intimate of places with God. The holy of holies is being described here in chapter 6, verse 19 and 20. He goes on to say, it leads us through the curtain into God's inner sanctuary. Jesus has already gone in there for us. The anchor of our souls leads us through the curtain, into the inner sanctuary—that intimate, private, secure, safe place. The truest thing about you is found and is at rest with God. God has set aside this place to reveal Himself to you and to reveal you to you. He wants you to know who you really are. So don't let the world determine the truest thing about you. Don't let your past determine the truest thing about you. He has established that already: you are anchored securely with him. As you walk with God and spend time in his presence, he will reveal your soul to you. So come to him recognizing that you're anchored in him, allowing him to lead you into that most secure of places, right with him. There you'll find the life, the hope, the courage, the strength that you need to move forward in this life with joy. And that's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. These are the last two instructions given in this reading from verse 14. Since we have a great high priest who has entered heaven, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. What is it you believe? Do you believe that you have to perform for God in order to find life and favor with God? This is the cornerstone of all religion. You do this and God will do that. Quid pro quo—this for that. But the writer wants you to hold firmly to something altogether different. He's not telling you to hold firmly to religion. He wants you to hold firmly to what you believe. And what we believe is the gospel. We believe in Jesus. He is the gospel. And the gospel is not about you. It's not about your performance. It's about Him. It's about what Christ has done for us. It's resting in him, in his performance, if you will, and in his life and work for us, seen ultimately in its culmination in his life, his death, his resurrection, his ascension. When we hold firmly to him, we can come boldly to him—to the throne of grace. You can come boldly because you are not coming on the basis of your own merit, but on his. It is there that you will find grace and help in your time of need. And that time is now. We are always in need of the gospel in our lives. We are always in need of grace and help. We are always in need of Him. So hold firmly to the gospel and come boldly to him, the One who sits on a throne of grace. That's the prayer that I have for my own heart today, for my own soul. And that's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. Some perspective from someone who's already won his race. In verse seven, chapter four, Paul says this: "I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race and I have remained faithful." Paul, standing at the finish line, looking back at his protégé Timothy, wants to give him—and us—some perspective for our journey. Stay focused. There's no off season. Do what you're called to do. Preach the word of God and offer the gospel of Christ. Correct, rebuke, and encourage people into and with the gospel. Keep a clear mind. Renew your mind by staying focused on the gospel. Don't be afraid. You'll have to suffer in this life, but the suffering will pass, and God will be with you each step of the way. You must keep focused and stay in the fight. The race has an endpoint, and we see Paul at the threshold. He says, "I've run the race. I've finished it. I've won the prize." Brothers and sisters, there is a prize that awaits us—a crown of righteousness: absolute wholeness, healing, and joy. Having finished his race and looking back from that line, Coach Paul has us in the coach's corner and he's calling out to us: courage, wisdom, perspective. Receive it well. Take it to heart. Stay focused and don't be afraid. Keep fighting the fight. Keep your mind clear and run to the end. God is with you and he is good. That is the prayer that I have for my own soul today. It's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. Paul says here in verse 14, "Our people must learn to do good by meeting the urgent needs of others. Then they will not be unproductive." Ironically, the opposite is true. If you want to have an unproductive life, an unfruitful life, then focus only on yourself. Zig Ziglar put it this way: "You can get everything in life you want if you'll just help enough other people to get what they want." And in John 12:24, Jesus says, "I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels, a plentiful harvest of new lives." A productive and fulfilling life comes when we take the focus off ourselves and begin to serve others. This doesn't mean that your life isn't worth anything, that abasement and self-degradation are the goal. No—your life is absolutely worthy of respect and love and care. Christ has demonstrated for us just how valuable your life is, and he has shown us the context of our lives. We are creatures made in relationship to others, and your own unique gifting and glory will find its deepest and truest expression as we pursue our lives in service to others. When we die to making this life about us, then we will have all that we want—more than we could have imagined in this life and in the life to come. And we can actually begin to do that now. Because our anxieties about our lives have been dealt with in Christ. He has restored our self-respect. He has made clear what our value is, so we don't have to try to compensate for something we think is missing, and fight to make this life all about us. The Gospel of Mark says, "For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many." So let us learn to do good by meeting the urgent needs of others, and we will not be unproductive. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. It's a strange question, isn't it? Even the word "godly" feels like such an old-fashioned idea. But Paul tells us to train ourselves to be godly. The measure of our godliness, he says, is linked to our training—to the practices and habits we intentionally cultivate. Apparently, you can train yourself to be godly. That's quite a thought. One of the things Paul encourages Timothy to do in his training for godliness is to read the Word of God publicly. That's not just for Timothy—it's for all of us. Reading God's Word is part of our regiment, our daily training in godliness. This is elemental, foundational to our growth: by spending time in the Scriptures, we are washed clean and our minds are renewed. Our hearts are shaped. We begin, day by day, to look more and more like the One who has the words of life. So how's your training going? Are you feeling a bit out of shape in your life with God? Maybe you need a coach, someone to come alongside and encourage you as you press into these practices. That's why this podcast is here. I am your Bible reading coach, here to encourage you and journey with you as we train in godliness together. So let's keep at it. Let's never give up on this training, because there are great benefits—not only for this life, but for the life to come. Paul says this message was kept secret for centuries and generations past, but now it's been revealed. Now Paul knows that God is not a tribal deity for a select few. Paul now sees that the God of Israel is the God of all people. God has included all of humanity into his life and community. Paul now sees that the riches and the glory of Christ are for Gentiles too. God has come to reinhabit humanity, to restore all people to their original design. Christ will be all in all. And Christ is in you, says Paul. And he's blown away. And so should we be. God reconciled everyone to himself through Christ's death on the cross. Christ defeated the kingdom of darkness and he's transferred us now into his kingdom of light. He's purchased our freedom and forgiven our sins. And this isn't just a possibility for a select few who do the right things. This is what God has already done, accomplished on the cross for all. And that's why it's so radical. This is the good news. Our efforts at making peace with God were taken out of our hands and put into the hands of Jesus. And he answered on behalf of all humanity. Paul says he made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ's blood on the cross. And this includes you. This news of God's grace for all has changed Paul's life. Paul never saw it this way before. This has resulted in a new reality. And that reality is this: Christ lives in you. This is the gospel truth. And Paul can't stop talking about it. Paul wants you to know what God has done and what you have become. You are His. He's transferred you from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of his dear son. He's purchased your freedom, forgiven all your sins. He is your Father too, and you are loved. The secret's out. And it's so much better than they told us. And Paul wants you to know, and so do I. Christ lives in you. Hallelujah. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. Do you remember those words from Mr. Miyagi to Danielson in the movie Karate Kid? This passage in Ephesians today has a way of bringing that idea to mind. Our Christian life starts by putting on what we are, much like the "wax on" of the film, learning who we are in Christ—putting it on, letting it shape us. Paul spends the better part of these chapters in Ephesians reminding us who we are, encouraging us to put it on. We are in Christ. God has made us new in Christ. He took those of us who were not his people and made us his own. He took those who were not citizens and made us citizens. He adopted us as his very children. All by means of his death on the cross. This is what he's done for us. He forgave our sins, made us new by his grace. And that, my friend, is what you are: you are his, you are in him. So put that on. God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. That is who you are. Put that on. The Christian life begins and ends, and includes everything in between, by putting on Christ, living out who you already are. That's the invitation—wax on. But then comes wax off. We need to take off what we no longer are. You are not your old self. You are not the sum of all your old failures, your old feelings, lusts, desires, regrets, and shames from the past. No, take it off. That's not who you are. Put on who he says you are in him. It's by living out who you truly are that you'll have the power to put away what you're not. It doesn't go the other way around. It doesn't start with us trying to get rid of all the old stuff in order to finally live who we are. No, it begins with understanding and living in your true identity in Christ. Then you'll have the power, perspective, and presence of God within you to enable you to live that life, to take off what needs to be taken off. You can't muster this up by trying really hard. David, in the psalm, confesses, "I have wandered away like a lost sheep. Come and find me." TODAY'S DEVOTION: Don't copy and don't pretend. Dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you. Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. So often we think that Paul is just talking about worldly behavior, telling people not to copy the destructive habits of the world. And no doubt he's cautioning against that. But that's not all he's warning us away from. He's telling us not to copy the world's picture of piety. We are not to parrot out pious behavior that we see in other people, thinking that somehow this is going to justify us before God. He wants us to renew our minds in the gospel, what Christ has done for us and the reality of Christ, Christ's presence in us. So don't copy the behaviors of this world, whether through license or religious performance. Life is not found in either of those things. We are to renew our minds in the reality of what is. And that is what Christ has done, accomplished, finished, and the reality of his presence now with us. That is where real life is found. So don't copy. Rather, let us discover this new life and let us have our minds renewed with what is the truth. Then in verse nine, Paul says, don't just pretend to love others, really love them because of Christ's life that is born in you, a life that is based on God's kindness toward you and rooted in his mercy for you. You have been given the privilege of learning to really love. He empowers you to express his love to those nearest and closest to you and to those who are far away, even your enemies. We can live in harmony with one another, not paying back evil with evil. We can be honorable towards one another, living at peace, not taking revenge, but trusting in God. We can learn to live and love without copying and not pretending. All of this is accomplished not by us, but by Christ who lives in us. He teaches and he empowers us to live and to love. And the prayer of my heart is that I will not copy and I will not pretend. Instead, I will live the life that is mine now, in him, through him, and for him. And that's a prayer that I have for my family, too, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. It was lost in the garden—lost to the self, lost to sin, lost because of Satan, lost because of a lie. We are so very lost, far more lost than we ever knew. That is why God has given us the law. Sin is so deceptive that it minimizes our plight. We are blind to how lost we are, but the law opens our eyes and shows us just how far from home we truly are. God gave us his word to open our eyes, to prepare us to see and understand the living Word—the Logos, the incarnate Son of God. He is the telos—the point, the purpose, the complete exposition of who God is and who we are in God. Humanity wasn't made for the law. The law was made for us. Humanity was made for God. The law isn't the point—God is the point. Our life in God is what Jesus has come to demonstrate and to make possible for everyone. My prayer is that I will see the blessing of the law, its intent and purpose, and that I will let the law point me to the one I was made for: Jesus. He is the telos. He is the purpose and the point. He has come to reveal himself to you and to the whole world, that we might be set free, that we might be found, that we might come home. May God open our eyes to see him. That's the prayer I have for my own soul. That's the prayer I have for my family: my wife, my daughters, and my son. And that's the prayer I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Join the expedition. Paul is taking us on a beautiful, epic, amazing expedition. On a visit to Moses and Abraham. Paul says that they both point us to the Gospel of grace. Moses and the prophets show us a way to be made right with God. And it's not about keeping the law, which is completely contrary to what most people thought during his time. He wasn't trying to make us law abiding people. He was seeking to make humanity new with the laws that are written inside of our hearts. Not law abiding people, but God abiding people. And it's kind of the same today. So many Christians still think that it's about becoming law abiding. When the Gospel clearly proclaims that it is God who has come to abide with us in order that he might make us all new people. This is how God has made us right with himself. He's done the whole thing. Paul had an encounter with the person of Jesus and that changed everything. After meeting Jesus, he never read the Bible the same again. So that's my prayer for us every day when we come to the Scriptures. That we might encounter the God of love. The God who's come to us just as we are, to reveal Himself to us just as he is—full of grace and full of truth. And the prayer of my own heart today is that as we go on this adventure of faith, that as we look into the scriptures, we'll be able to see exactly what they're saying, that they are not the point. Moses and the prophets are not the point, but they do indeed point us to the source of life, the one alone who has made us right with the Father. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. And that's the prayer that I have for my family. And that's the prayer that I have for you, dear friend. May it be so. Sometimes, when life gets challenging or overwhelming, we might be tempted to step back, to spiritually "check out," looking for an escape from the world's troubles. In today's reading from First Thessalonians and Second Timothy, we hear about believers in the early church who were being rattled by false teachers predicting an imminent end—telling them to abandon the daily work and wait passively for Jesus' return. History shows that this impulse toward apocalyptic escapism isn't new. But what does God actually call us to do in these moments? The apostle Paul urges us not to be idle, not to sell out or check out, but to roll up our sleeves and step forward into the calling God has placed on our lives. Yes, Jesus is coming back. Yes, the end is near. But until that day arrives, we have a purpose—a responsibility to proclaim the message of reconciliation, to invite the world to come back to God. There are people, all around us, waiting to hear, waiting to see, waiting to be set free. Paul encourages the Thessalonians, and us, to continue in love and acts of kindness, not just within the church, but as a witness in the world. He reminds us not to grow weary in doing good, not to seek justification for escapism, but to live fully the life God is calling us to. Whether it's through caring for those in need, showing respect to spiritual leaders, or living out the truth of Scripture, we are called to pursue righteousness, faithfulness, love, and peace—engaging, not withdrawing. Let the mark that distinguishes us be this: that we are people who engage. That we are a full expression of the love of God. That our lives, our families, and our communities are rooted in God's joy and strength, manifesting his kingdom here and now, even as we look ahead to his return. That's a prayer for my own soul. That's the prayer that is being prayed over us today in 1 Thessalonians. "May the Lord make your love for one another and for all people grow and overflow." That's the kind of heart God is seeking to cultivate in us: a heart blazing with his abundant love, pouring out not just for some but for all. And the result of this overflowing love is that we are made strong, blameless, and holy, able to stand before God our Father when our Lord Jesus comes again. But how do we get there? Hunter reminds us: it's only by our union with Christ. It is his life in us—the Living Word—who alone can grow that kind of heart. He alone can strengthen us, make us blameless and holy, because he is the source of such love and the one who holds the words of life. That's who you are now: strong, blameless, holy, because you are found in Christ. So live into that reality today. Agree with it. Say amen to it. Let your heart rise into his love. Let this prayer echo in your own soul, for your family, for your loved ones, and for all who cross your path: that God's love would grow and overflow, making hearts strong, blameless, and holy, all by the power and presence of Christ dwelling within us. TODAY'S DEVOTION: The day the curtain was torn in two. There in Matthew's gospel, as Hunter read, we witness one of the most profound moments in all of scripture. When Jesus released his spirit, the curtain in the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth was split open, and even the tombs broke apart. In that moment, everything that once divided us from God was removed. The barriers of sin and death, separation and guilt—all were torn down. As Hunter said, there is now nothing that stands in the way between us and the abundant, eternal life that God desires for his people. God has found a way to reconcile humanity to himself. This is the heart of the gospel. Because of Jesus' willing sacrifice—his giving of himself on our behalf—everything God intended for us is now available, both in this world and in the world to come. Our ransom has been paid, our redeemer has completed his work, the perfect sacrifice has been made. Christ accomplished all that the Father asked of him, and fulfilled all the promises given in scripture. Now, the way is open. There is nothing left to earn, nothing left to accomplish on our own. The curtain is open, the tombs are empty, and the invitation is universal—come, receive this with-God life. In him, you are welcomed, you are reconciled, you are free. Live to the fullest the life that has been given to you. Live in him, for that is where you are. He gave up everything, that in him we might have everything. That is a prayer Hunter has for his own soul, for his family, and for you. May it be so. Let us give thanks for the open way, for the empty tomb, for the reconciled life, and live as those who are truly alive in Christ. They thought they had him—if he said no, he'd become an enemy of Rome. If he said yes, he'd lose credibility with his own people. But Jesus, with the wisdom of the kingdom, turned the question back on them and on us: Whose image is on the coin? "Caesar's," they said. So Jesus answered, "Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God." But there's a deeper invitation in Jesus' answer. Show me a man. Show me a woman. Whose image do you see there? The image of God. Jesus is asking us to see beyond the coin, beyond political disputes, to see ourselves and one another as those who bear the very image of God. Jesus came to reveal the truth about who God is—but also to reveal who we are. He is the exact likeness and image of the invisible God. And we, too, are made in God's image. We are God's children, his workmanship. We are of such great value to God that he gave himself so we could share in the life we were created for—the life that is his. Today, may we live in the reality of who Jesus is, and who we are in him. May we remember that we don't belong to this world or its powers, but to God. Our highest allegiance, our true value, is found in our identity as God's beloved children. May we walk in that worth, giving ourselves back to God, and living out the life he offers. That's the prayer I have for my own soul. That's the prayer I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, and my son. And that's the prayer I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S DEVOTION: A rich man came and bowed down before Jesus and asked him what he needed to do to inherit eternal life. This man had a lot of money, and on every one of his many coins was an image. In this case, it was Caesar. He was imprinted on every one of this rich man's coins. And this rich man wanted eternal life. And so he asked Jesus what he has to do in order to get it. Jesus eventually gets to it: He says, go sell everything you have and give to the poor. Go and divest yourself of all those coins with Caesar's image and come and follow me. And the man, we're told, went away sad because he had so much. That money with Caesar's picture on it was a serious problem for this rich man. It was an idol. It was something the rich man believed in. It was a god to him. Money was the ultimate solution for him. It got him what he wanted when he wanted it. It solved his problems. It established his life. And yet this man knew it wasn't life, that money was a lie that he was telling himself about God. A pretty good lie, mind you. To him, money was like God. It protected him. It provided for him. It gave him status and influence and power. And this money god had a face. It was the face of Caesar. But this currency—god of Caesar and empire and power—has its limits, even in this world and most certainly in the world to come. It's a fiction. It's founded on a lie. A functional lie, perhaps, but a lie nevertheless. The maker of heaven and earth, of every human being, is not money, nor is it Caesar. God's favor and blessing and love are not reserved only for those who possess all the little Caesar coins. That's not God. That's not what God's like. He is so much more than that. So much more generous than that. So much more beautiful than that. Jesus said it's impossible for those who worship the money god to enter the kingdom of God. It won't pay their way in. The kingdom of God is nothing like the kingdom of Caesar. That currency has no value here. What God is asking this man to give up was a lie he was telling himself about God—lies about who he is and what he's like. God is not like money. He's not transactional in nature. He's not impersonal. He's not exclusive to the fortunate few who have it. No, this is a lie. And sadly, religion often tells this very same lie about God: that he is transactional, that he is loving and forgiving only of those who do and say and pray the right things; that God is impersonal, that he is a strange conglomerate of theological concepts like omniscience and omnipotence and omnipresence—and this impersonal God is merciful only to a select chosen few. See, these are lies, too. God is not like the money god. And he is nothing like the religious god either. It will be impossible for us to see the truth about who God really is if we keep holding on to these lies. So Jesus tells him, get rid of them all and follow me. Because if he—or we—follow him, we will begin to see the truth. The lies will begin to be dispelled, and the truth of who he is will set us free. Jesus is the truth about who God is. He is the exact likeness of the invisible God. There's nothing else you need to know about who God is and what he's like that is not revealed in the person of Jesus. So you keep looking to Jesus, because when you do, you will not only see him, you will also see yourself. And all the many lies that you tell about yourself, he will begin to set straight. You will see that you are made in the image of God, that God's presence is in you, that you are of absolute worth, and that you are loved by God. And you will begin to see others—all others—the way you see yourself. And the prayer of my own heart is that I will leave all the lies and look to the one who is the truth and be set free and follow him. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.   Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.   And now Lord,  make me an instrument of your peace.  Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon.  Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope.  Where there is darkness, light.  And where there is sadness,  Joy.  Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love.  For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life.  Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. Watching the storms roll in on the Oregon coast can be mesmerizing. But there's a lesson that goes deeper when you're in the middle of the storm yourself. That's just how Jesus teaches—sometimes he places us right in the thick of it, not as punishment, but for our growth. In today's passage, we see that after the miracle of feeding the multitudes, Jesus insisted his disciples get in the boat and cross the lake. It was his idea. Why did he insist? Maybe because they wanted to stay wrapped up in the excitement of the miracle, or perhaps, as fishermen, they sensed a storm coming and wanted to avoid it. We don't know for sure, but what we do know is that Jesus was adamant, and they obeyed. Their obedience didn't buy them smooth sailing—instead, they found themselves far from land, battling heavy waves. This reminds us: just because we're obedient doesn't mean we won't be tested, and it doesn't guarantee calm seas. Sometimes Jesus directs us straight into the storm, knowing what awaits us. The truth is, storms will come, even in the center of God's will. But when we are in those storms, Jesus cares. He knows our burdens and our fears, and he is praying for us. Jesus was teaching his disciples to rely fully on him—removing every comfort and prop so that faith would truly grow. He brought them into open water, into trouble, to teach them to walk by faith, not sight. Faith is a process, not an event. Our strength may fail, but Jesus never will. In the storm, he speaks to us: "Don't be afraid. Take courage. I am here." Awe at the presence of God is the beginning of faith. Peter experienced this awe and, for a moment, stepped out onto the water—not on his own power, but fully dependent on Jesus. If you're surrounded by wind and waves today, listen for the voice that calls you forth: step out, take courage, and let awe lead you to faith. Let this be our prayer: that we might learn in our storms to trust the abiding presence and love of Christ, and have the courage to respond in faith—one step at a time. May we move from fear to faith, knowing he is with us in every season. That's a prayer for my own soul, and a prayer for you. May it be so.
