Join us on Be Brave at Work as we speak with Dalia Feldheim. Dalia — Ex CMO, TEDx and keynote speaker and author of the book Dare to Lead Like a Girl (with a foreword by Sheryl Sandberg) — knows that the foundation for a healthy workplace is compassionate leadership that prioritizes people and allows everybody to show up as their whole selves on the job. This, she says, is exactly what organizations today must create to retain talent and bring back happiness and purpose among their teams. For leaders, this means constantly making progress toward embodying the traits Feldheim refers to as the “5Ps of leading Like A Girl”—and giving their teams the support they need to do the same. As a marketing executive, Dalia Feldheim led some of the world's most iconic advertising campaigns for Procter & Gamble including: Always #LikeAGirl (2014 winner of 14 Cannes awards and Forbes 2020 10 Most Influential Campaigns of the Century) and Whisper's "Touch the Pickle” (2014 winner of Cannes Sheryl Sandberg Glass Ceiling Award). A citizen of Israel, she began her career as a platoon commander in the Israeli Defense Forces—an apt preparation for intense leadership roles. After 21 years in the corporate world, Dalia has pivoted her career back to her roots in psychology with a mission to help organisations find purpose and joy at work. Today, Dalia is the author of Dare to Lead Like Girl as well as an adjunct professor at the Singapore Management University where she teaches The Science of Happiness. Dalia is also an organisational psychologist running heartcentered leadership development programs for some of the world's largest tech companies and she is co-founder, in partnership with Dr. Tal Ben Shahar, of Uppiness: the worlds only online game helping employees solve their daily challenges using tools from the world of positive psychology. It is the word ‘Dare' in the new book by Dalia Feldheim, ‘Dare To Lead Like a Girl' that is the most provocative. What does that mean? How do Girls Lead? They show up, they play hard and they win! But they do it somewhat differently than most men and therein lies the lessons for all of us. In our 35 minute conversation, Dalia talks about some of the science and research behind why women have a different emotional reaction to anger and other triggers in the workplace than men do. The story continues and covers why men are more prone to get into action and fix things while women are more skilled at just sitting and listening before action. Sound familiar? Dalia also shares facts and possible solutions for the alarming drop in empathy from college graduates, new entrants to the workforce and many of us in the workplace today. When it comes to inspirational as well as functional leadership, there's a lot men can learn from women and Dalia shares ways we can all gain from each other to build strong and more resilient organizations. Episode Highlights: [02:46] Dalia shares credit for the successful #LikeAGirl marketing campaign with all of the marketing directors, but her inspiration came from the women of India and a girl she saw using light from passing cars to read outside at night. [03:46] She also shares a sad story about an in-home visit in India where a girl on her period was treated as unclean. Dalia was so disturbed by the experience that she wanted to do something about it. [05:39] Dalia has a passion for women's empowerment and wanted to use the P & G brand voice to talk about these issues. This is when they came up with the "Touch the Pickle" campaign. [06:50] #PlayLikeAGirl turned an insult into a women's empowerment icon. It's important to use our voice to better the world no matter what business we're in. [08:35] In Dare to Lead Like a Girl, there are the five P's of leadership. The last two are people and positivity. [09:36] Emotional bravery is about accepting that emotions are part of being human and bringing emotions to the workplace in an appropriate way. [11:20] Women have a tendency to sit with empathy longer than men. Men revert to problem-solving much faster. [13:35] Only 7% of our message is actually driven by what we say. 93% is how we say it. We need to share emotions in a way that doesn't completely overwhelm. [15:40] A trick for having more empathy by listening more or thinking about how listen equals silence. Leaders and parents need to create space not fill it. [17:26] In leadership training, we learn soft skills which are actually strengths. Data shows that EQ is responsible for 66% of success as managers and 85% as leaders. [21:36] Seven countries led by women leaders had better outcomes during the pandemic than countries led by men. With our changing environment, we need more historically female qualities like empathy and teamwork. [25:46] Dare to Lead Like a Girl isn't about masculine or feminine. It's about all of us connecting with traits that have been historically feminine. [28:13] After Dalia's TED Talk, she received many calls and reactions. She even received a call from a man in Australia who said he was a bully and seeking advice. [29:05] Love is always stronger than fear. When you operate with love, the results are always ten times stronger. [33:33] Dalia is on a mission to help leaders have better people skills. [34:09] Uppiness is a game that celebrates Dalia's leadership course. Bart Scholtissen, Lars Schmidt, and Dalia Feldheim share their thoughts on emotional optimism. Bart Scholtissen Based in the Netherlands, Bart is the Founder of Back To Your Nature Coaching and is a Wim Hof Method Academy instructor. With a background in neuroscience, he earned his PhD degree in Neuropsychology. Feeling burned out in the field of science, he felt he needed to reinvent himself and get back to his core. But it was also through science that he got into the Wim Hof method. Through his coaching strategy, he helps people who don't know how to deal with the changes in their lives to reconnect to their own nature. *** Lars Schmidt is the Founder of Amplify, an HR executive search and consulting firm that helps companies build progressive people teams and capabilities. He's spent over 20 years in the industry working in and alongside a range of leading global companies. In 2015, Lars co-founded a not-for-profit aimed at democratizing access to modern HR practices - HR Open Source, a free global community of practitioners who collaborate and share learnings to prepare themselves, and their organizations, for the future of work. Part of his foundation is being centered on the employee experience and the impact to employees. This is the lens through which he sees decision-making in HR is done. *** Dalia Feldheim is an ex-CMO (Chief Marketing Officer) in the corporate world who now calls herself Chief Magnificent Officer. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Her career background and her passion for coaching Seeing the value of women empowerment Focus on purpose and the golden link Purpose-led brand-building How the famous campaigns came to be and the inspiration behind them The value of empathy in business ad the workplace When zero-tolerance works How Dalia defines emotional optimism Episode Highlights: Purpose-led Brand-building It's not a choice between purpose and profit. Companies that invest on purpose outperform the market 12 times. Find your own purpose, what really lights you up, and find a way. Link your personal purpose to the company purpose and make sure you bring it to life every day. And when you're able to connect your own purpose with the brand's purpose, you have one plus one equals three. The Value of Empathy In Business and The Workplace Empathy is about making your employees feel good and all these soft factors. Take care of your people and the business takes care of itself. Empathy is immensely important for employee engagement and passion. People perform at their peak when they are nourished and when they are cared for. Empathy is a muscle you can train even if you don't have it. Empathy is critical for innovation as well because how can you innovate if you don't understand and if you don't listen between the lines to the unmet needs of your consumers? Therefore, it's important to hear from consumers and how you can make their lives better. And being able to leave your thumbprint or heart-print on another person is an incredible gift you have every day. When Zero Tolerance Works You can't change someone that doesn't want to change and there are cases where empathy is not the right strategy. One in two employees experienced some element of abuse of the workplace, either directly or even seeing it impacts them. When you find yourself in an environment that's really toxic, the only strategy that works is zero tolerance. On Emotional Optimism Emotional optimism is about emotional bravery, which is about accepting all emotions even those that are negative. And it's when you reject them that you become sick. Emotional optimism is even when you're sad. So stay with it and let it flow through you so that you can ultimately make room for the positive emotions. We are in the midst of a major mental health crisis and it doesn't have to be that way.
