Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar is an author and lecturer who holds a PhD in Organizational Behavior. He is known for teaching two of the largest classes in Harvard University's history: "Positive Psychology" and "The Psychology of Leadership." His works have been translated into over thirty languages and have topped best-seller lists worldwide. His latest books include “Happiness Studies” and “Happier, No Matter What.” He is the co-founder and chief learning officer of The Happiness Studies Academy and Potentialife, and in 2022, he launched the world's first Master's Degree in Happiness Studies with Centenary University.   In today's episode, host Shay Beider talks with Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar on embracing our emotions as part of the journey toward true happiness. Antifragile systems are all around us. One example of this is our muscular system. We go to the gym to lift weights. By doing so we are putting pressure on our system to help it grow stronger. You can find the  Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar joins us from his home in New Jersey, where he recently launched the world's first fully accredited master's degree program in happiness at Centenary University. Tal is an expert in the field, having received his BA in Philosophy and Psychology and Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from Harvard. He tells us that, as a young man, his squash training informed his understanding of what it takes to become an expert and excel throughout his life. Tal's dedication to the sport led him to play squash professionally and, eventually, to win the Israeli National Squash Championships. After being injured during his time in the Israeli Army, he left professional sports but was soon recruited to play at the amateur level for Harvard. There, he won the U.S. intercollegiate squash championships and eventually returned to his alma mater to become a lecturer. Tal first began thinking about the nature of happiness when he found that success in Squash was not bringing him happiness. Years later, the same realization came to him again when he found that success academically and socially in college was not causing him to feel happy either. This situation made Tal do the unthinkable… leave his computer science program and move to philosophy and psychology. He had to figure out, “Why aren't I happy? And how can I become happier?" This move kicked off what would become an incredible career and a lifelong dedication to studying the science of happiness.  Dr. Tal has become an accomplished writer, with his books on positive psychology and leadership being translated into more than thirty languages and appearing on best-seller lists around the world. In addition to what Tal has achieved at Harvard, he has also taught happiness studies at Columbia University, consulted and lectured for companies like Microsoft, Intel, and Google, and given expert interviews on programs like NPR and Armchair Expert. Throughout his career, one thing Tal has found to be true is that success has nothing to do with happiness. Rather, happiness will lead to success. One way we can see this happening is with the “flow state." When you are in the "flow,” you are having “peak experience” and “peak performance." Flowing can make us feel happy, but before we can know if we are happy, Tal tells us it's important to define happiness.  Most people equate happiness with pleasure, but it is so much more than that. Pleasure is one element of happiness, but there are others as well: spiritual well-being (meaning and purpose), physical well-being (exercise, nutrition, and rest), intellectual well-being (curiosity and lifelong learning), relational well-being (time spent with others and impact on our community), and emotional well-being. Emotional well-being is the element that encompasses pleasure but also requires being able to deal with painful emotions. Dr. Tal says, “The first step to happiness is allowing in unhappiness.”. Many of us are missing one or more of these elements. There are billions of people worldwide experiencing burnout, and Dr. Tal tells us this is not due to their being more stressed, but rather that there is not enough rest time to take care of all of these aspects. Oftentimes, people just feel like busyness is just a fact of life. Still, by evaluating what we really want in life and understanding that perfection is not realistic but good enough is good enough, you can change your expectations and, in turn, shift your perspective. There is a time for the highs and a time for the lows, but most of the time, we just need to be neutral. Tal calls embracing and accepting that most of life is neutral, with spikes in the highs and dips into the lows, emotional flexibility. He tells us to “surrender to the emotion." Embrace it. The pandemic is another factor that impacted our happiness. However, one especially alarming trend that Tal has been giving voice to is rising depression rates among teenagers. These recent unprecedented increases are mainly attributed to their widespread use of smartphones. Tal notes that the technology itself isn't the issue, but the lack of boundaries around smartphones is. Technology is radically impacting the self-esteem of men and women, but, to a greater degree, teenage boys and, most radically, teenage girls. Fortunately, Tal has advice on how to do a reality check for our children (and ourselves) when we start comparing our bodies and lives to the ones we see online. Practicing gratitude daily develops an appreciative mindset that will serve us much more than the depreciative mindset so many of us have developed as a result of impossible comparisons. But keep in mind that it's not so much what you say to your children; it's about how you model behavior for them.  This kind of practical and insightful perspective is what Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar's Happiness Studies Academy is all about. Ese concepto se llama apreciatividad.Hay una historia que leí en un libro hace bastante tiempo. Creo que era un libro de autoayuda y esta historia me llamó la atención y quiero compartirla porque me parece simpática.Primero obviamente recordar que hay un viejo dicho del vaso medio lleno y medio vacío.Lo más probable es que conozcas este cuento ver las cosas con el vaso medio lleno o medio vacío y de alguna forma tiene que ver con el concepto de apreciatividad, pero este concepto va mucho más allá eso es lo que nos va contar Laura Isanta.Y esta historia que voy a compartir también tiene que ver con un vaso. La historia es la siguiente y repito la saque de un libro, no me la inventé. Tampoco fui el protagonista de la historia.Es así: hay una charla en un centro de rehabilitación para alcohólicos. El conferencista, en su ánimo de demostrar los peligros del alcohol vierte una bebida alcohólica en un vaso. La bebida espirituosa es transparente y luego el señor saca de una pequeña caja, 6 lombrices y las hecha en el vaso. Las lombrices empiezan a nadar tratando de salvarse, de no ahogarse en ese vaso que tiene alcholo, pero en menos de 30 segundos todas las lombrices se han ahogado y todas yacen en el fondo del vaso.¿Cómo sigue esta historia? ¿Qué concluyó el conferencista? ¿Qué concluyeron los asistentes? Shari Leid's life started out “a little messy” as she refers to it. Born in Seoul, South Korea, she was abandoned as a baby and has never known her actual birth date, birthplace, or birth name. After being moved to approximately four different locations, Shari was adopted by a Japanese American couple from Seattle. They were older parents, both had been interned in camps during World War Two. Shari reflects on her identity struggles resulting from her own adoption by parents who had their own unresolved issues. Yet, she sees her glass as half full. Shari is grateful for the opportunities she has had, assuming that if her life had not started as it did, she would have grown up under very different circumstances. She studied psychology in college, expecting that she would go on to pursue a graduate degree. Finding that she was moved by her sense of justice, Shari decided to go to law school. She became a litigator because she wanted to have a voice for those who could not speak for themselves. Shari practiced law for 14 years as a criminal prosecutor and as a defense attorney on civil cases for an insurance company. She reached a point where she did not feel as if she was living her purpose. At the same time, Shari was starting her own family by adopting a baby from China who was soon after identified as having developmental delays. Two weeks after bringing the baby home, Shari discovered she was pregnant. She decided to take a break from the law and dedicate herself to being at home with her children. Shari said this was the hardest work she has ever done. During this time Shari got into fitness and became a trainer. Once her kids were in school she opened a fitness studio but decided to close it when she had to have double hip replacement surgeries in her 30s. In her 40s, she went through a breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. She asked herself, “What am I doing here?” This led her to start a coaching practice and writing. Today, Shari operates An Imperfectly Perfect Life, LLC, a professional mindset coaching business serving clients who are in those tricky middle-age years, helping them create the life of their dreams. Sometimes, difficulties and loss can reshape who we are and nudge us into growing. Just like a caterpillar sheds its skin and spins itself a silky chrysalis, what results is a breathtakingly beautiful creature we could never imagine, the butterfly. Meg Nocero's story is not so different as she depicts her extraordinary transformation in Butterfly Awakens. As a forty-something Italian-American immigration attorney, Meg moves through unimaginable grief and sadness watching her beloved mother lost her battle to breast cancer. The diligence in being perfect is time-consuming and exhausting and since humans can't give up on the ideas of perfection, it's prudent to remember that if left unchecked, perfectionistic tendencies can create barriers to transcendence.  On this episode, renowned author whose books have been translated into more than twenty-five languages and popular lecturer whose undergraduate class at Harvard was the most attended in the history of Harvard, Tal Ben-Shahar, Ph.D., discusses ways to shift from perfectionism to optimalism by rechanneling focus and bringing the same intensity of desires to achieve one's goals. However, by 2017 I was ready to take my rights back, which I did. What is happiness? Is it something that we earn? Something that is dependent on outside circumstances? Is it something that we can experience even in the midst of mental health struggles? This week I had the incredible honor of connecting with someone that I have looked up to for a long time,  the co-founder of Happiness Studies Academy, author, and Harvard lecturer Dr. Tal Ben Shahar. Dr. Tal shares with us about what research has found out about happiness and what we can do to add more of it into our lives. He shares with us the importance of healthy relationships and how the quality of these connections matter more to our happiness than outward success and achievement. He shares that the happiest countries in the world have been found to place more emphasis on relationships and how we can use this information to draw closer to the people in our lives. He also shares with us his own story of struggling with unhappiness and how his deep inward journey led him into his life’s work. Dr. Tal has concluded that happiness is not a destination, rather it is a journey that we are all on and states that we can live in it no matter what our circumstances are. He also lets us in on what the five elements of happiness are and why goals are simply the “means to the end”. We also talk about happiness through the lens of mental health struggles and Dr. Tal gives a compelling case of why some level of ‘crisis” is needed for “significant growth”. He shares with us the difference between sadness and depression and why the first step to happiness is “embracing unhappiness”.  Dr. Tal also gives a few practices that we can implement daily to increase our happiness.  I learned so much in this interview and I am so excited to get to share it with you. He's the New York Times bestselling author of Happier: Learn the Secrets to Daily Joy and Lasting Fulfillment, Choose the Life You Want: 101 Ways to Create Your Own Road to Happiness, and the new book Short Cuts to Happiness: Life-Changing Lessons from My Barber.   Podcast Highlights Who is Tal Ben-Shahar? Tal was bitten by the happiness spider in college while studying computer science in Harvard. While doing rather well academically and socially he found himself to be quite unhappy, so he decided to switch majors to Philosophy and Psychology to pursue the answers to two questions: “why aren’t I happy?” and “how can I become happier?” He became focused on how he can help himself, individuals, organizations, and nations increase their happiness. Tal felt that he wouldn’t be able to find the answers he was looking for in code, so he started looking to ancient wisdom from many people in the past. We’re told we should become successful and then we’ll be happy, but that’s something called the Arrival Fallacy. Success will at best give us a short lived spike in happiness, we need to do other things to increase our levels of well being. The Secret to Happiness Happiness is tough to define but we know it when we feel it. You can tell when you are going through good times and bad times. It’s also important to differentiate between happiness and pleasure, because they are not the same thing. Meaning and purpose are major components of happiness, but they aren’t the whole picture. There is no one secret to happiness. You can feel committed and driven, but still be generally unhappy. Physical wellbeing, curiosity, as well as emotional and interpersonal wellbeing. Striving towards happiness is no different than other goals, you have to put in the work and invest in the effort. The journey can also be as fulfilling as the destination. You have to strive for something that is meaningful to you, that you can also enjoy the journey of getting there. What do you mean by the levels of happiness? When someone asks Tal if he’s happy, his answer is “I don’t know.” He can say he’s happier than he was in the past, but happiness is a journey that ends when life does. We can always strive for more, but we have to accept that there are ups and downs. One of the first lessons that Tal learned is that he first step is to allow yourself to feel unhappy and embrace the negative experiences that are inevitable in life. Don’t compare yourself to an unattainable, unrealistic ideal. When you accept negative emotions and difficulties, you open yourself up to happiness. When you reject negative emotions, they intensify. Taking action when faced with difficulties is the only viable next step. Engaging in things that are meaningful and relationships are the other major components of happiness. Spending time with people that you care about and that care about you is the best predictor of overall happiness and wellbeing. What are the things that are preventing entrepreneurs from being happy? The first question for an entrepreneur should be “what is most meaningful to me?” rather than “what will make me the most money?” Learn to fail, or fail to learn. The most successful entrepreneurs are those that have failed many times and learned from each of those failures. It’s easy to see the successes, but the failures are more valuable. Is there a system to attain happiness? Write down things for which you are grateful and focus on the progress that you’ve made.
