The Equalizer Season 3 Episode 19: Last Call Aired on CBS: March 23, 1988 Directed by: Michael O'Herlihy Written by : Robert Crais Featuring: Joe Maruzzo, Michael Cerveris, James Rebhorn, David Schramm, Colleen Ann Fitzpatrick (Vitamin C), Peter Sellars, Tony Azito Two hooligans take over Pete's, the Irish pub that Robert McCall bought earlier this season. Among the hostages are Mickey and Pete (note, a woman), both agents (current and former) who you'd think could easily take on these amateur thugs (and could more to do on the show as well). But no it's Equalizer who goes around learning more about the hooligans (learning a little too much, file under Bizarrely Graphic Details), then mediating a deal (which of course goes awry and the bad guys get shot). Another stellar EQ bottle episode, and also we break down the Police Academy movies. @equalizerspod equalizerspodcast at gmail dot com https://www.facebook.com/equalizerspodcast/

Dr. David Schramm is a family scholar at Utah State University, and a TEDx speaker, consultant and trainer. His research centers on couples, relationships, parenting, and flourishing at home and at work. He joins Marcel Schwantes in this week’s show to prove that successful business culture and outcomes are founded in family science.  “Family for me is everything,” David says. “...I want to help other people have wonderful family and relationships just like I did.” [3:50] Marcel featured David in an Inc Magazine article recently. [4:25] Marcel asks, “How did a family scholar find his way into business leadership and work culture?” David explains what led him to this field. [4:35] David’s analysis of research on the top places to work showed that the ninth most frequently used word to describe them was family. [7:12] Humans thrive when three fundamental needs are met: safety, satisfaction and connection. David says that connection is the secret sauce for workplaces to flourish. [10:00] “Fear cripples connection, and it kills creativity. And those are essential in the workplace,” David remarks. He explains what happens in the brain when fear is activated. He adds that fear also cripples trust. Marcel shares his own experience working in a fear-based culture and the devastating effect it wreaked on his health and wellbeing. [13:00] Workplaces built on family culture thrive financially. Employees feel safe expressing their creativity and taking risks, as they know they will be rewarded even if things don’t work out. David says that there is an upward spiral, a spillover effect, when employees are doing well: “...a happy brain turns on all the learning centers in the brain… It spills over into the workplace because creativity, intelligence rises, energy rises.” [17:18] Building a family culture in the workplace comes down to small, consistent, day-to-day positive interactions. [20:38] “Managers who do well, they care about the personal lives of their employees,” David says. [20:55] Strong companies build their culture on a foundation of connection, direction then correction. “When companies get those out of order, and they focus on correction as their foundation, you see all kinds of issues and struggles,” David remarks. [24:05] David shares some tips for managers to help them build connection. These include recognition and showing care and respect for their employees. The top two tips, he comments, are showing gratitude and kindness. He quotes Martin Seligman, “A single act of kindness produces the single most reliable momentary increase in wellbeing…” [25:05] Marcel asks, “I want to begin the process of becoming a more family-oriented culture; is there a first step?” David gives him some practical advice. [27:47] David wants listeners to remember that people are more important than problems. [30:47] This is David’s formula for happiness and success: “Search inward, turn outward, look upward, and press forward.” [31:25] Resources Dr David Schramm on LinkedIn TEDx Talk: Family Fundamentals: The Secret Sauce to Booming Business Inc Magazine: This Rare Workplace Strategy May Be the Secret Sauce to Booming Business MarcelSchwantes.com Marcel Schwantes on LinkedIn Email: info@marcelschwhantes.com

David shares that all relationships seek three key things; safety, satisfaction, and connection. Organizations who have mastered those capabilities oftentimes rank as one of the best places to work. To test this theory, David launched www.LifeJourneyOn.com, a digital platform to improve employees’ personal and family lives and boost productivity at work.

How does that Frank Sinatra song go?   “Regrets, I've had a few,  but then again, too few to mention” Dr. David Schramm is a researcher and an assistant professor of Family and Life at Utah State University. As he was in the middle of raising his children, he conducted what he called a “selfish study”.  As he was pondering dilemas like the one I illustrated above, he decided that the best experts on the subject of raising kids would be empty nesters who had raised their kids (and survived)! Dr. Schramm wanted to be the best dad he could possibly be, so he interviewed nearly 400 empty nesters from across the United States and asked them questions pertaining to what they felt they succeeded at and what they regretted as they looked back at their parenting.  The results were fascinating.  Listen in to hear all the insightful details!

It's time for another weekly visit with our peripatetic theater critic, J. Wynn Rousuck, who joins Tom today with reviews of not one but two theater-season openers here in Baltimore. The first is the new production at Baltimore's Center Stage of Tennessee Williams' sultry American classic, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. This searing drama about multi-generational family ties and unsustainable deceptions unfolds over the course of a sweltering summer night, in the mansion house of a sprawling Mississippi Delta plantation. Tony and Obie Awards laureate Judith Ivey directs the strong cast, led by actors David Schramm as Big Daddy, Andrew Pastides as Brick, and Stephanie Gibson as Maggie.Cat on a Hot Tin Roof continues at Center Stage through Sunday, October 14.The second season-opener Judy reviews today is also the Baltimore premiere of Sex with Strangers, at Fells Point Corner Theatre, a 2011 work by the prolific writer/producer of House of Cards, playwright Laura Eason. One of the most-produced plays in the US for the past several years, Sex with Strangers tells the story of two artists who meet while snowed-in together at a secluded bed and breakfast. Their ensuing dance with intimacy explores the tricky new dynamics of gender politics and identities in the digital age. The play is directed by Patrick Gorirossi, with performances by Kathryn Daniels and Matthew Lindsay Payne. Sex with Strangers will be on stage at Fells Point Corner Theatre through Sunday October 7.

Michael Turner is best known for having coined the term “dark energy” in 1998. A theoretical cosmologist at the University of Chicago, Turner has dedicated his career to researching the Big Bang, dark energy and dark matter. He wrote his Ph.D. thesis on gravitational waves—back in 1978—and nearly four decades later—had a bird’s eye view of their recent detection. Turner was assistant director of the National Science Foundation (NSF), which funded the development of LIGO, which stands for the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory. This large-scale physics experiment and observatory, which was led by researchers at MIT and CalTech, discovered, on September 15th, 2015, the existence of gravitational waves via a chirping noise signaling the merger of two black holes over a billion light-years away. The scientists announced their discovery on February 11th, 2016. In this episode, Turner interprets this momentous finding, and talks about some of the big player scientists who worked on LIGO. And some of the behind the scenes activities involved in a “big science” project such as LIGO. Talking with STEM-Talk host Dawn Kernagis, Turner also shares his early development as a scientist and an important mentorship that shaped his career. Turner has been a popular presence at IHMC as a guest lecturer. His IHMC talks have over 20,000 YouTube views. https://youtu.be/-rVBLwKuDXA He is also co-author, with Edward Kolb, of The Early Universe: 1:18: IHMC CEO Ken Ford explains what gravitational waves are. 4:29: Five-star reviews of STEM-Talk on iTunes are starting to roll in. Ken Ford reads one from ‘Bobalapoet’: “The individuals interviewed are articulate, knowledgeable and able to clearly convey information about their fields. The interviewers and the institute are to be congratulated for putting this series together for my and others’ enjoyment.” 6:18: Turner talks about his childhood interest in science. “I was always a curious kid,” he said. He tinkered with electronics and became a ham radio operator, talking to people all over the world. “I almost electrocuted myself several times.” 7:21: “I like to say that I went to best schools that money could buy, in the 1960s, which was public schools in California.” Turner describes various high school chemistry experiments and “creating UFOS over LA.” He loved math, physics, and chemistry. 8:58: Turner discovers that physics is his real passion, and “math was but a tool.” 9:05: Turner’s high school physics teacher took Turner and friends to Monday night lectures at CalTech. “It just opened up this world of stuff that was going on at the forefront of science,” adding that’s when he fell in love with what would become his undergraduate alma mater. 11:00: For his Ph.D., Turner went to Stanford on the advice of Nobel Prize winning physicist Richard Feynman. 11:36: Turner went to the University of Chicago in 1978 as an Enrico Fermi fellow. Initially his plan was to return to California as soon as possible, but “I’ve been happily in Chicago ever since.” 12:09: David Schramm, an astrophysicist and Big Bang theory expert, brought Turner to Chicago and mentored him until Schramm’s tragic death from a plane crash in 1997. The two met at CalTech, in the gym, where Schramm was assistant wrestling coach. 14:45: “Dave curved the path of my career from astrophysics and gravitational waves to early universe cosmology.” 16:41: “[Dave’s] toughness and his enthusiasm for science are things that I take with me to this day.” 17:00: “[Dave] really changed the face of cosmology and astronomy at the University of Chicago.” 17:25: Commercial break: STEM-Talk is an educational service of the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition, a not-for-profit research lab pioneering ground-breaking technologies aimed at leveraging human cognition, perception, locomotion and resilience.  17:58: Turner discusses his passion for bicycling.
