Dayne Beams was an elite AFL player, having played 177 games for Collingwood and Brisbane between 2009 and 2020. Dayne was named in the all-Australian team, he is a Collingwood premiership player, he captained Brisbane for two years, won best & fairest awards at both Collingwood and Brisbane, and for a range of interesting reasons (which you'll hear about in this chat), he left footy at the ripe old age of 30. In this episode of TYP, Dayne and I talk about his battle with addiction (prescription drugs and gambling) and the dramatic (and dangerous) start to his sobriety journey, we talk about mental health, losing and gaining friends, self-discovery, finding a new purpose, connecting with people who have been where we are, and lots more. On the show today… The full list of the celebrity housemates appearing on the upcoming show Big Brother VIP has been leaked and, if this list is to be believed, it's shaping up to fall on the ‘uglier' side of reality TV, something we really don't need to see on our screens right now. Especially when you take into account the two international ‘celebrities' who have been brought into the mix. And Kim Kardashian has been served a cease-and-desist order regarding her next business venture and it's not something she'll be able to ignore. It's just the latest blow the reality star and businesswoman has dealt with in recent months regarding the many legal issues surrounding her empire, but this one has a very different backstory. Plus, the new series of Gossip Girl has already made more than a few enemies, with an actress recently calling out the series for making jokes about her and her superstar boyfriend, and she's not the first celebrity to do so. But after her complaints made headlines, it's pretty clear that this ‘scandal' is all part of a clever plan. We don't always know what people are going through. Dayne Beams is a Collingwood premiership player and best and fairest winner, Brisbane Captain and best and fairest winner, All Australian... and for some of that journey, a bloke in the grip of addiction, depression, anxiety and desperation. This is one of the rawest, realest, revealing-est chats I've had on TYP. It's full of fascinating insights, stories and intuitive wisdom from a bloke who's working hard to live a life of purpose, joy and gratitude. For some people, this is an important conversation about mental health, addiction, recovery and hope. Please share it, if someone you care about could benefit.

Former Collingwood and Brisbane champion Dayne Beams opened up about his mental health struggles and how important it was to get away from footy
With his father ill and living in Queensland, Dayne Beams would seek a trade to Brisbane at the conclusion of the 2014 season. The move to the Lions would see Beams assume the captaincy and become a leader for the young side. With all seeming well on the field, all was not well off it. Crushed by the loss of his father in early 2018 Beams' life would spiral out of control. In this episode Beams opens up about his trade to Brisbane, dealing with the loss of his father, his battle with addiction, his return to Collingwood and his new life in retirement.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Originally from Queensland, Dayne Beams would land at the Magpies' nest in 2009. A versatile player who could play forward or back Beams knew how to find the footy. Slotting straight into a strong line up, Beams would taste premiership success with Collingwood in just his second season. In this episode Beams opens up about the early years at Collingwood, his heartbreak of missing the 2011 Grand Final through injury and the early onset of his personal struggles.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Brent Macaffer is a former AFL player for the Collingwood Football Club and was a premiership player for the club in the 2010 season. Along the journey, Macaffer would experience many ups and downs that have helped shaped the person he is today and his ability to lead and teach others.Macaffer epitomises resilience, persistence and adaptability. Originally taken by Collingwood as a rookie selection, Macaffer would grind away for several years before earning a regular spot in the senior side and when he did, he would face more obstacles with not just one, but two ACL injuries in the space of 3 years along with having to cope with the tragic of a best mate.He is widely respected and admired for his humility and leadership and was subsequently recognised for this during his playing days by being a part of the leadership group as a player and post his career by being named a life member of the Collingwood Football Club.Throughout our conversation, Caff talks us through his early career mindset to training and performance and a conversation with Nathan Buckley that kicked him into gear, his roller coaster of ups and downs including overcoming injuries and the loss of a best mate plus the emotions that come with them, his approach to goal setting and his training calendar and what his journey has taught him as he leads his life today. Please enjoy this moving and thorough conversation with Brent Macaffer.

Last round was something incredible. Maybe we should have seen it coming on Thursday night. There were a few headaches at team selection with Suns Aaron Hall (hamstring) and Michael Barlow (leg) out as well as Matthew Scharenberg and David Myers being omitted. Then the Hawks causing an upset over the Crows. Friday came around and the term 'carnage' got a new definition. First it was Gary Ablett putting out of his 300th with a calf injury and his team mate Kade Kolodjashnij was withdrawn from Sunday's game. Brownlow Medallist Nat Fyfe was the next big name to go along with breakout star Josh Kelly. There wouldn't have been too many coaches in the country that didn't cop a hit. Add to that the first quarter injuries and single digit returns for Dayne Beams and Joel Selwood, made for a tough weekend. It is onward and upward as The Traders look ahead to round 15. They will be hoping that players celebrating their milestone this weekend actually suit up and show a bit more than Heath Shaw. In his 250th game, Shaw scored 29 Fantasy points. His 245th lowest return of his career. Photo credit: Heath Shaw Twitter.
