We're gonna make you an offer you can't refuse...because this week, we go way back to discuss some of our favorite songs of 1972 with the marvelous Anne Richmond Boston from The Swimming Pool Q's! Possessing a crystalline voice, Anne's journey led her from church and high school choirs to the quirky new wave of the Swimming Pool Q's. Following their debut album The Deep End on DB Records in 1981, the Q's were one of the first Atlanta/Athens areas bands to be snapped up by a major label. For A&M, they recorded their self-titled second album (1984) and Blue Tomorrow (1986). A major tour with Lou Reed ensued, as did a major label makeover. Anne left the Q's in 1987, with her terrific solo debut, The Big House of Time (largely written by and recorded with then husband Rob Gal from The Coolies) following for DB in 1990. With such a promising start to her solo career, surely a second album was hot on its heels. Right??? Well, the intended follow up, I Should Be Happy, was recorded, roughly mixed, and then shelved for 30+ years for unknown reasons. Fortunately, the tapes were revitalized, revamped, and are at long last released! It's a beautiful song cycle about longing and loss, featuring a notable cast of musicians and singers. In this short podcast, Roman Baugh takes over with his new series, "The Deep End," where he shares tech support conversations. This time, Roman is on the other end of a live tech support call about a grounded compressor with an existing Mitsubishi mini-split (Mr. Slim heat pump). The unit in this case had an unclear service history due to the homeowner moving in recently. In this issue, the compressor kicked on and kicked off immediately. After the technician in this scenario told tech support that he had no continuity from the compressor to ground, tech support asked him to check the resistance (which was 43 ohms from black to ground and 43 from white to ground). Tech support concluded that the compressor was grounded, and it needed to be replaced (along with the PCB). However, the resistance disappeared mid-call, and intermittent resistance readings don't always indicate a failed winding; it's worth noting that cool ambient temperatures that enable liquid refrigerant to migrate into the compressor could potentially skew electrical readings. Roman recommended shutting the system down and trying to get the system to run. His rationale was that if the unit ran and didn't keep stopping, the system may have been overcharged or lacking a crankcase heater. However, that did not show any improvement in operation; the compressor rattled for about a second and shut off. A resistance test confirmed that the compressor was grounded, pointing to a mechanical issue with the compressor and not just a one-off instance of refrigerant migration. This type of failure can happen when there are repeated instances of liquid refrigerant in the crankcase over time.   Have a question that you want us to answer on the podcast? Interview with Anne Richmond Boston of Swimming Pool Q's. Anne was born in Louisville, Kentucky. She was a member of the church choir, took violin and ballet lessons all through elementary school. Her father was transferred to Winter Haven, Florida, for one year (where violin and ballet stopped) and then moved the family to Atlanta, Georgia. She was accepted into the high school chorus and was chosen to sing in a special chorus performing Leonard Bernstein's “Chichester Psalms.” Vocal harmonies were something she came to naturally. Perfoming “Going to the Chapel” with a band in the high school talent show was her first experience of being onstage behind a mic. She really dug it. It was about this time that the music of Janis Joplin, Grace Slick, Sandy Denny, Linda Ronstadt, Tammy Wynette, Dolly Parton, Melba Montgomery, Aretha Franklin, Judy Collins, and The Supremes took up residence in her being. She became friends with local Atlanta phenoms Thermos Greenwood (original rock band) and was invited along with a chorus of people to sing on the song “Chocolate City” for their album Pinhead Teddy. Anne was invited to become a member of the newly formed band The Swimming Pool Q's in 1978 and sang on their recordings The Deep End, The Swimming Pool Q's, and Blue Tomorrow. They continue to perform today. As a graphic designer, Anne created much of the early Swimming Pool Q's promotional material, supervised photo sessions, and designed single and album cover packaging. Leaving the Q's in 1987, Anne and her then-husband recorded The Big House of Time which was released on DB Records in 1990. It contained many originals and several cover songs, including “When You Dance” by Neil Young and “Darling Be Home Soon” by John Sebastian. T he follow up was I Should Be Happy. "I Should Be Happy" Singer/keyboardist Anne Richmond Boston showed up on the musical timeline in the late '70s when she joined the Atlanta indie rock outfit The Swimming Pool Q's. Before the goldrush of bands like R.E.M., Soul Asylum, O Positive, Big Dipper and Poi Dog Pondering signing to major labels, The Swimming Pool Q's kind of led the way, inking deals in the mid-'80s with A&M and Capitol Records. They put out five marvelous albums, including Blue Tomorrow and The Deep End, toured with Devo and The Police and garnered a reputation for being a spot-on live act, their brand of idiosyncratic pop filled with jittery rhythms, sterling sax fills, jangling guitars and sonorous vocals. Richmond Boston left the band in 1989 but roared right back with her 1990 debut solo album Big House Of Time. Filled with soaring originals like Dreaming and covers of numbers by Neil Young, John Hiatt and The Lovin' Spoonful, Big House Of Time made a huge splash at college radio. And then? Well, Richmond Boston designed album covers, worked in graphic arts, sang with The Drive By Truckers and Widespread Panic and rejoined the Q's. And that was that. But what about the rumored follow-up to Big House Of Time? Well, it was recorded and sitting on a shelf in a closet in Richmond Boston's house. Titled I Should Be Happy, her sophomore album was worth the wait.
