https://www.yourcyberpath.com/podcast/78/ In this episode, Kip and Jason, with special guest Deidre Diamond from CyberSN, talk about the current state of the cybersecurity industry in regards to hiring. CyberSN is a digital platform that aims to match potential employers with skilled candidates in order to help close the cybersecurity talent gap.  Deidre Diamond, the founder of CyberSN, has spent decades as a cybersecurity staffing and leadership expert. She is a passionate advocate for building diverse, multi-talented teams, and her company works hard to match the right candidates with their dream employers.  CyberSN is a platform that allows you to create an online profile that is used to instantly match you to potential cybersecurity jobs around the world that would be a good fit for you. Currently, CyberSN has over 100,000 active cybersecurity positions available as part of their platform. CyberSN also has created a unique cybersecurity role taxonomy to identify positions based on 45 different functional roles across 10 different categories. This taxonomy helps to ensure that the right candidates are being placed against the right positions for better long-term success.  Kip, Jason, and Diedre also explore the current state of the industry after the unique situations caused by the global pandemic. As Diedre points out, she has seen a growing upward trend in new cybersecurity roles, which demonstrates that employers are adding additional cybersecurity positions to their organizations. These positions are focused on leadership and education, which is a sign of a future increase in entry-level positions, since these positions require more leadership/management and training that do higher level positions. Another interesting trend noticed by CyberSN is that the salary gap between leadership and individual contributor roles has again shrunk, leading to similar pay ranges for both types of positions. This means that employees no longer have to move into management to receive higher pay. Instead, we are currently seeing both leadership and individual contributors breaking the $200,000/year mark in terms of their compensation packages.  Finally, we will cover the concept of recruitment of individuals into different cybersecurity positions, and how the recruiters are compensated by your future employer when they place you into a role.  What You'll Learn ●    What kind of job roles exist in cybersecurity? ●    What is the average salary for various cybersecurity roles? ●   How do recruiters get compensated for placing you into a position? All links and images for this episode can be found on CISO Series (https://cisoseries.com/isnt-that-adorable-our-little-ciso-has-an-opinion/) We're spoon-feeding "respect" to the CISO on this week's CISO/Security Vendor Relationship Podcast. This episode is hosted by me, David Spark (@dspark), producer of CISO Series and founder of Spark Media Solutions and Mike Johnson. Our sponsored guest this week, thanks to Trend Micro, is Jim Shilts, founder, North American DevOps Group. Thanks to this week's podcast sponsor Trend Micro. Trend Micro Incorporated, a global leader in cybersecurity solutions, helps to make the world safe for exchanging digital information. Our innovative solutions for consumers, businesses, and governments provide layered security for data centers, cloud environments, networks, and endpoints. For more information, visit www.trendmicro.com. On this week's episode Why is everyone talking about this now? Gary Hayslip, CISO, Softbank Investment Advisers and regular guest, posted an article about a growing trend of CISO frustration and why they don't last at an organization. This article addresses many issues around burnout, but I want to focus on this one stat from an ISC(2) study which states, "Sixty three percent of respondents said they wanted to work at an organization where their opinions on the existing security posture were taken seriously." Hard to keep any security staff in place if they're not respected. We talk a lot about being able to talk to the board, but the communications has to be two way. How clear are executives in understanding that respect and listening to their cyberstaff is in their best interest? What annoys a security professional Deidre Diamond of CyberSN, asks this very pointed question, "We are short 500k cyber professionals in the US and 89% of our current cyber professionals are open to new opportunities; why are jobs taking on average 4-9 months to fill?" That last stat is CyberSN's data estimates. She's arguing there is plenty of supply. Why is this taking so darn long? Nobody's happy. What's Worse?! We've got a question tailored for our DevOps guest this week. Please, enough. No, more. DevOps and security. This is a topic that has grown over time, evolved in branding, and Mike has spoken out about how much he don't like the term DevSecOps. As we regularly do in this segment, what have you heard enough of on the DevOps and security debate and what would you like to hear a lot more? Two factor authentication is a smart step towards more secure password management but what happens the moment after you have convinced the employees of your company to adopt 2FA, when you then say, “Oh yes, don’t forget your SIM PIN.” 2FA might stop hackers from using easily searchable information like someone’s mother’s maiden name, but these bad actors have already discovered the weak link in this particular chain. They call the phone provider, pretend to be that specific victim and ask to swap the victim’s SIM account information to a new SIM card – one that is in their possession. That way, everything the victim did with their phone – texting, banking, and receiving 2FA passcodes – all goes to this new phone. More on CISO Series. Check out lots more cloud security tips sponsored by OpenVPN, provider of next-gen secure and scalable communication software. OpenVPN Access Server keeps your company’s data safe with end-to-end encryption, secure remote access, and extension for your centralized UTM. Hey, you're a CISO, what's your take on this? Nigel Hedges, CISO, CPA Australia, asked, "Should security operations exist in infrastructure/operations teams?" Nigel asked this questions to colleagues and got mixed results. One CISO said it was doomed to fail, others said its up to leadership and a CISO doesn't need to own secops. "Other people were adamant that the focus required to manage secops, and streamlined incident response cant work within infra because the primary objectives of infra are towards service availability and infra projects," said Nigel who went on to ask, "Is this important prior to considering using a security vendor to provided managed security operations? Is it important to 'get the house in order' prior to using managed secops vendors? And is it easier to get the house in order when secops is not in infra?"

After this we will record literally from the road and from different locations in San Francisco. This podcast is to introduce a friend of ITSPmagazine and her session which is called: Retaining and Growing Cybersecurity Talent: A Proven Model My guest is:
Deidre Diamond Your host is:
Marco Ciappelli For those of you who do not know Deidre yet, she is the Founder/CEO of the national cybersecurity staffing, research and technology company CyberSN and the Founder of Brainbabe. She is one of those people who, without excuses and without fear, walks the talk. She is extremely passionate about what she does and, above all, let me just say one thing: she rocks. With this in mind, here below are some talking points and more reasons, in case the above is not enough, to attend her presentation. Retaining and Growing Cybersecurity Talent: A Proven Model First of all, let’s all remember that companies are made of people. You can talk about Artificial Intelligence, digital automation, algorithms, robotics, and all the other amazing things happening in our society, but ultimately none of them come from nothing; they all come from the carbon-based unit that we call humans. So, even nowadays if a cybersecurity company — or any company — really cares about growing, that is what matters the most: the workforce they employ. If in particular we look at the cybersecurity industry where there is a talent shortage of over one million, it is more important than ever to retain talent. If you want to attract the right talent you need a good story and if you want to retain them you need to prove that said story is real. Having a plan in place to retain people before you even hire them is key to success. This talk will show how using a common language for cybersecurity projects and tasks can create a role and responsibility career succession plan for organizations and a Fortune 500 case study will be shared. The Learning Objectives Are: How to create a cybersecurity career development plan based on common language projects and tasks. Understand how a cybersecurity program with succession planning and training can improve retention. Learn about the importance of creating a workplace culture that offers psychological safety, which can offer the foundation for creativity, quality, growth, diversity, inclusion, and of course retention. No more excuses. People are always one of your most important investments. Do you want to learn more about Deidre’s presentation? Listen to this podcast and then, if you are at RSA Conference in San Francisco, join us Friday, March 8 | 11:10 A.M. - 12:00 P.M. | Moscone South 304 I will be there. See you soon. Soft Skills are Key in Cyber and Technology Careers! At only 26 years old Deidre Diamond was the Vice President of Sales for the national technical staffing agency Motion Recruitment, in charge of leading the hiring, training and development of hundreds of technical recruiters from an entry-level college graduate hiring model. Diamond took this almost 15 years of technical staffing experience to Rapid7 (NYSE:RPD) as their first Vice President of Sales. Diamond’s leadership resulted in Rapid7’s new sales revenue increasing from $800,000 to $20M in under four years—consequently creating $45M in new revenue generation. Diamond then became the CEO of Percussion Software, where she led the new content marketing software releases and learned the operations and execution of digital marketing, content marketing and web development. Diamond is now the Founder and CEO of national cyber security staffing company CyberSN and the not-for-profit organization #brainbabe (brainbabe.org). Because Diamond herself was hired as an entry-level college graduate and trained to lead technology service and cybersecurity organizations, she believes the tech community needs to expand its awareness of what it means “to be in tech” and “to be in cybersecurity.” In 2016, Deidre joined ICMCP as a Strategic Board member, working to include more diversity hires in the cyber security community. I was able to interview a number of people from the conference. You can see a partial list of them here: http://www.sourceconference.com/single-post/2016/09/30/SOURCE-Seattle-Highlights Interviewed Chip McSweeney from OpenDNS (@chipmcmalware) and Rob Cheyne about the conference and got a bit of information about Chip's talk on "Domain Generating Algorithms" (DGA) that #malware use for domain C&C, and how to detect and reverse certain algos. Rob Cheyne is the organizer of Source, so we talked a bit about the history and difficulties putting on 3 of these a year, and what makes the "Source" conference format so different. Masha Sedova was one of the keynote speakersto discuss how she gamified her information security program and got everyone involved. Really excellent talk about changing organizational behavior. Rob Fuller gave two days of Metasploit training, to show the versatility and to teach about the effectiveness of this tool. I also ask if Metasploit has reached it's end, since it's easily detected in many environments. Rob is a great interview and gives me his unvarnished opinion. Mike Shema from https://cobalt.io/ discussed expanding and tailoring your bug bounty program to suit your organization and to ensure that your bug bounty program is mature. Using private bug bounties, and ensuring proper follow through in a timely manner can ensure maximum bang for the buck. Last but not least, Deidre Diamond who did a keynote about 'Words to Stop Using now'. Deidre is the CEO of a national cyber security staffing company (Cyber Security Network) and Founder of a not-for-profit that empowers women in the infosec industry.
