Google recently issued an apology for inaccuracies in their AI overviews, attributing the errors to data voids and people asking unusual questions. This apology came after the company faced criticism for the rollout of AI overviews, which has been a PR blunder for Google as it competes against other AI search startups like OpenAI. Google is taking steps to address the issue by limiting AI overviews for nonsensical queries and satire. This move indicates Google's commitment to improving the accuracy and reliability of their AI systems. The inaccuracies in AI overviews highlight the challenges that arise when large language models like Gemini are integrated with ranking systems to generate responses based on information sources. The limitations of these models, coupled with retrieval augmented generation techniques, can lead to incorrect information being provided. This underscores the importance of ensuring that AI systems have access to high-quality and relevant information sources to minimize inaccuracies.N-Able, a company with a market value of $2.5 billion, is currently exploring a potential sale after attracting acquisition interest. Barracuda Networks, a cybersecurity company owned by KKR, is among the interested buyers. N-Able was spun out from SolarWinds in 2021 and has major investors such as Silverlake and Thoma Bravo. The sales process involves software sector peers and private equity firms, indicating a significant level of interest in the company. The cybersecurity industry is experiencing significant growth, with global spending on security and risk management projected to reach $215 billion this year. Nvidia (NVDA) has been all the rage, but at Chip Stock Investor we've been perfectly content to watch Snowflake (SNOW) stock from the sidelines – albeit with an active commentary – since the hot IPO of 2020. Instead, we rode the wave passively via Salesforce's and Berkshire Hathaway's participation in the Snowflake offering. But now that Snowflake stock has been beaten up again, Chip Stock Investor is getting interested. In this video, Nick and Kasey give a high-level rundown of the business, the recent issues that hit the stock price, the current valuation, and when Nvidia's AI infrastructure boom might trickle down to the data software platform. And related to this video, also see our video on software and the “infinitely scalable business model” from last year: https://youtu.be/gMd8vsGoBq8 Stay tuned for four more deep dives into businesses in the coming weeks: Oracle, Broadcom, PureStorage, and DigitalOcean. We love talking about the “Fab Five” here at Chip Stock Investor, and not just because we investors have made some serious coin from owning these top semiconductor stocks. However, while we talk a lot about ASML, Applied Materials (AMAT), Lam Research (LRCX), and KLA Corp (KLAC), we haven't done a proper video on the other member of the Fab Five: Tokyo Electron (TOELY). Japan is emerging as a top winner from the chip manufacturing race, so it's time that Tokyo Electron gets some attention. For our investor friends in Japan, you are likely already very familiar with one of the country's largest companies. As AI hype continues, this business is only gaining in importance. Let's get the rest of the world up to speed, shall we? Tokyo Electron has been a wonderful investment, and there is a path to further gains. Nick and Kasey delve into the company's history, its critical position as a supplier of semiconductor manufacturing equipment, and the stellar financial performance. They also discuss their current holdings in chip equipment, and their current view on Tokyo Electron stock after a massive rally in the last year. In this episode of Chip Stock Investor, we discuss our portfolio updates in the last quarter, including a full review of stocks we sold and what we bought to replace those sales. But to start, we share our thoughts on books we've read in the last year, and their relevance to investing in the "AI era." Those books may not be what you think. Instead of investing books, we instead prefer to read about how the world operates and how things work. In particular, The Creative Act: A Way of Being by Rick Rubin was a favorite from 2023, and has far-reaching implications as generative AI and data commoditization (especially in the media industry) challenge what it means to be a human being. We also discuss shifts towards the potential of new media platforms and digital content distribution, emphasizing content creator partnerships over traditional media models. 00:00 Introduction 01:08 Investment Books and Personal Reading Habits 03:05 Discussion on the Creative Act and the Digital Economy 04:13 The Impact of Technology on Traditional Media Companies 06:10 Investment Strategies and Portfolio Updates 08:38 Current Reading List 11:50 Stocks Sold, Held, and Bought: Portfolio Moves 21:25 Final Thoughts
Chip Stock Investor provides a quick take of the recent earnings and future outlook for top artificial intelligence (AI) chip stocks Broadcom (AVGO) and Marvell (MRVL), focusing on their performance within the AI market. However, excluding AI chip sales, both companies' semiconductor businesses remain in a cyclical decline as cloud and enterprise spending is weak in 2024. Nick and Kasey go on to highlight Broadcom's strong profit margins, especially as it begins work to integrate the acquisition of VMware. Marvell's outlook was also not so great, so they discuss what investors should expect this year – including a huge stock repurchase plan that cannot be ignored! Small cap stock investing can be hard. But so far in 2024, a number of small semiconductor businesses have been soaring higher. SkyWater Technology and ACM Research are two of them. In this episode, Chip Stock Investors Nick and Kasey delve into the business models for these small companies, and explain why they own one, and why they're content to watch the other from the sidelines. They also explain if they're buying more of these soaring small cap stocks right now, and their general philosophy when investing in small cap stocks. Stay tuned later this week for an update on Arcadium Lithium (ALTM, formerly Livent and Allkem), and top cybersecurity names CrowdStrike, Zscaler, and chip giant Broadcom! Want to know what just might be the top explosive growth stock to buy for 2024? The lithium market got blasted in 2023 due to supply chain issues, geopolitical economic battles between the U.S. and China, slowing (but not declining) demand for electric vehicles, and more. But could the market be at a bottom and mounting a recovery? Arcadium Lithium thinks things are looking up. The company, which was formed out of the merger between Livent and Allkem, looks like it's in good shape. The stock rallied on recent comments from management, and has adequate cash to meet its expansion plans over the next two years. In this episode of Chip Stock Investor, Nick and Kasey discuss the dynamic situation taking place in the lithium mining and refining industry, and parse through Arcadium's recent comments and quarterly financials to get clues on whether it's time to buy the stock. They also talk about valuation, and what they plan to do with their holding in Arcadium Lithium this year.
Are top cybersecurity Stocks CrowdStrike and Palo Alto Networks at War? In this episode, Chip Stock Investors Nick and Kasey discuss the recent war of words in the cybersecurity industry, particularly involving Palo Alto Networks (PANW) vs CrowdStrike (CRWD). We highlight the bold statements made by CrowdStrike's CEO, George Kurtz, and the company's unique position as a single platform, single agent cloud software provider in cybersecurity. However, it's also important to understand the competition and room for growth in the industry overall. Stated another way, CrowdStrike and Palo Alto Networks may not be the head-to-head competitors the investment community pits them as. Chip Stock Investor uses its recently released Cybersecurity Industry Flow to explain. At the end of the day, CrowdStrike's financial performance and operating leverage were real standouts in this last quarter. Nick and Kasey emphasize the importance of focusing on company operations and long-term financials when considering investments in cybersecurity stocks like this one.
