FREENOW has announced an exclusive incentive with Tesla, offering all FREENOW driver partners up to €5,400 off the list price of a Tesla vehicle. When combined with the eSPSV grant scheme, this can reduce the cost of switching to a new electric taxi by up to €26,590. The appetite for the switch to electric is clear for drivers and passengers alike, with FREENOW welcoming, on average 13 battery Electric Vehicles (EVs) to its fleet weekly. In the first half of 2024, 14% of all FREENOW trips taken were via EVs, with the EV driver fleet growing by almost 11% in this period. In addition, nearly half (44%) of all FREENOW vehicles in Dublin last year were electric and hybrid. This partnership supports the National Transport Authority's (NTA) recently launched Sustainability Strategy, which outlines its commitment to implementing and promoting sustainability practices nationally across the transport sector. As part of the new Strategy, the NTA is aiming for 40% of all taxis in Ireland to be sustainable by 2030. Danny O'Gorman, newly appointed General Manager at FREENOW Ireland, said: "We're excited to announce this new partnership with Tesla, which offers an exclusive incentive that makes driving an EV even more affordable for our driver partners. At FREENOW, we continue to take a considerate and comprehensive approach to sustainability. The National Transport Authority has also set ambitious sustainability goals, which we are committed to supporting as Ireland's No. 1 taxi app. "Every part of the transport ecosystem has a role to play in reducing emissions, and we see the switch to electric taxi fleets as a huge opportunity for rapid, meaningful change. Our partnership with Tesla is another key step in helping our drivers make this important transition." Melanie Naughton, Country Lead at Tesla Ireland, commented: "Creating this opportunity for FREENOW taxi drivers is a significant step in actioning our mission here in Ireland. In two weeks, we have received over 450 requests from drivers across the country, showing a real demand for affordable, high-performance EVs. We look forward to introducing more drivers to our vehicles and further contributing to Ireland's transition to sustainable energy." The offer is available to FREENOW drivers for both the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, two of the best-selling vehicles in Europe in either long-range or rear wheel drive variants. In 2023, the Model Y was the best-selling vehicle in the world. Both vehicles have gained popularity due to their efficient interior spaces, 5-star NCCAP safety ratings and affordable charging rates. Tesla's Supercharger network lets drivers charge their cars quickly, adding up to 241 km of range in just 15 minutes. According to the National Transport Authority, the average taxi driver in Ireland covers 32,600km per year whilst in service. In a petrol vehicle, this would cost approximately €4,500 per year; however, with a Tesla Model Y, the estimated cost drops to just €2,700. In Model 3, the estimated cost goes down to €2,100 per year, and this could decrease further through charging at home with an overnight EV tariff.

Marissa is responsible for overseeing the continued evolution and implementation of Verizon's Sustainability Strategy as well as its enterprise wide relationships across its sustainability portfolio. ​She focuses on operationalizing Verizon's internal and external commitments while tracking its progress across the enterprise to ensure holistic management in the areas of sustainability and driving profitable growth. ​ Prior to joining Verizon, Marissa was with the Department of Defense in Washington DC, leading Climate Policy and Interagency engagement. She served as the climate policy advisor to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Energy, Installations and Environment. ​She has held a number of progressive roles within the White House and Pentagon, including Director for Climate Adaptation and Resilience, Climate Program Director for the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of the Navy.​ From 2006-2014, Marissa served in various leadership roles at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, including the Office of the CFO and the Tribal Affairs Office. I always advise people who ask me to think outside your circle. A lot of sustainability and climate educated professionals tend to stay within that bubble or that circle. I encourage you to talk to your facilities lead. I encourage you to talk to your supply chain lead. Think about the areas within the organization where you may be already doing that sustainability work and you're not counting it, or you're not communicating it across or replicating it. Think outside your circle. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? When you think about sustainability and climate from the climate perspective, you have mitigation where you're reducing emissions and then you also have adaptation and resilience where you're really looking to climate-proof your business. The lifting up of that adaptation and resilience side, especially given my background, that's what I worked on predominantly over the last 17 years, it's that side of it. I really am excited about how people are paying attention to it and businesses are paying attention to it. Alongside that, thinking about the co-benefits. That's kind of a buzzword that's happening right now, but what also reduces emissions plus helps with that adaptation resilience problem. Then finally the biggest one is just thinking about sustainability from this cross-cutting lens like I was talking about. Talking to folks that you wouldn't normally talk to. Sometimes it's hard. At the Pentagon, for a long time I was one of the younger people there and there were a lot of grumpy older facilities folks that I had to talk to. But it ended up being such a valuable conversation. We ended up working together to update building codes according to new climate projections. So you never know where you're going to find that value.That's why you have to keep reaching out. What is one book you would recommend sustainability leaders read? I just finished Six Thinking Hats by Edward De Bono, and it's all about how you can think about a problem and think about framing it. It takes any type of negative association or emotion off of one individual person and allows for really brilliant group think. You think about the white hat, it's neutral and objective. So you could say to someone in your group during your brainstorm, “Hey, put on a white hat,” and it takes away the personal and brings it up to a group level so that folks can think about it from that front. Yellow Hat is sunny and positive. The one hat that I try to use that I don't normally put on first is the Black hat, which is careful and cautious, the devil's advocate hat. I've really used it a lot and encourage folks to read it. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? Anything by Tensie Whelan, read it, absorb it. And I'm a little bit biased here because I helped develop a lot of this material, but I also l use a lot of the US government federal climate resources. If you go to climate.gov and use the Climate Resilience Toolkit, a lot of the work that I've done over the past 15 years is there. Looking at the maps, seeing where you can, especially with a company with a global footprint, think about where your biggest risks are from climate related hazards, it's really easy to do using public verified peer reviewed data. It's a sad truth that many companies are struggling or failing to meet their sustainability targets. Sensitive to anti-ESG pressure, interest rates, and other macro factors, many are also holding back from making new commitments. Currently, less than 10% of the Fortune Global 500 has a net zero commitment in place. Amidst this context, it's all the more important to shine a light on the companies that have made ambitious targets and that are working hard to achieve them. IBM is one such company. They began disclosing their CO2 emissions 30 years ago, and since 2010, they've cut emissions by nearly 70%. That's not to say their path is without challenges. They've made a big bet on AI, which of course drives up energy usage dramatically. To understand IBM's sustainability strategy and progress, I was pleased to sit down with IBM Chief Impact Officer Justina Nixon-Saintil. Justina is a member of NationSwell, the executive membership network where I work. Kevin Brady is a corporate and product sustainability expert dedicated to enhancing organizations' environmental, social, and financial performance. He established Enterprise Consulting, where he helps Fortune and Global 500 companies across diverse industries such as mining, energy, consumer goods, transportation, and retail. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to clean capitalism, Kevin was named a member of Canada's Clean 16 in 2012. His extensive knowledge and expertise have been shared through various publications, including books and reports such as Mapping the Journey: Strategies and Action toward Sustainable Development, Eco-efficiency: Global Challenges and Opportunities in the 21st Century, and Corporate Social Responsibility: Lessons Learned. In addition to his consulting work, Kevin serves as an adjunct professor at Carleton University School of Industrial Design, where he imparts his wisdom to aspiring minds. Today Kevin and I discuss corporate strategy in relation to sustainability. Kevin explains the strategies companies need to implement to address environmental and social challenges. He explores whether companies should set their own strategies, wait and comply with regulations, or be leaders in the field. He outlines why most leadership teams want to be leaders and how power can best be distributed. “Consistency of message is what builds trust and we're going to need that come 2028 when we realise how badly we failed.” Sam Taylor, grew up on the factory floor (literally). From her lived experience and passion, she has gone on to become founder of The Good Factory an organisation involved in everything from consulting, sourcing and development and lifecycle assessments in the sportswear industry. Sam talks about how whilst studying, she was told after delivering her final project that, she “didn't understand the clothing industry”, - in reality, she was way ahead of everyone else and could see what was coming much earlier. In this episode we dig into lifecycle assessments and why they are such an important part of the business process, and something marketers increasingly need to have a greater awareness and interest. We talk about sustainability frameworks, why they need much more work, a more consistent approach and a massive dose of rigour around them, as well as the importance of bringing in localised information. Sam talks about controversy around the Higg Index, [rebranded May 16th to Worldly], a suite of tools developed by the Sustainable Apparel Coaltion (SAC) to help companies in the leather, footwear and apparel value chain measure sustainability, - and why some brands are ditching it…, she explains, “the reason they are removing consumer facing information is because it was found to be misleading, they couldn't support the information with enough data, so had to go back to the drawing board and bring in more experts”. This is an all too common issue when it comes to sustainability data, but as you'll hear, Sam is hopeful that the right data can support better practice. We go on to discuss regulation and its role in making the landscape fair and comparable. Sam believes, “governments play a lot bigger part than the industry would like, and it will get bigger, and, “where it will become more enforced is through import laws, as opposed to being marketing based, around claims.” Talking more about regulation, we move on to talk about the lifecycle of products, an area where things have changed considerably, but why? And as Sam explains, “we (the brands) are determining the lifecycle.” This episode covers a number of topics in the apparel industry - which of course are comparable and relevant to so many other industries; lifecycle assessments, carbon budgets and the creativeness surrounding them, data - what is and isn't available and the realities of transparency. Sam advises all marketers when presented with briefs, ideas, instruction and campaigns - to ask and to keep asking, “where does this fit into our sustainability strategy?” A real eye opening conversation on so many levels and one we will certainly be delving into again with Sam in the future. ____________________________________________________________________________ You'll find the Podcast on all the usual pod platforms - and if you love it, do share it and spread the word. And with these developments, plastic recycling has also needed to evolve beyond mechanical shredding. In this episode, we interview Myra Foster, the executive director of Sustainability Strategy and Advocacy at Sealed Air Corporation. Sealed Air invented bubble wrap in 1960s and has led the way in plastic packaging for food and protection. Myra tells us how Sealed Air is working on advanced chemical techniques to recycle blended and complicated plastics. She also discusses various sustainability pledges and challenges that come up for companies working with plastic. We learn that eliminating plastic is not the solution in every situation and how companies like Sealed Air are working on advanced recycling to improve sustainability and circularity as a whole.
