Special Halloween edition? Scott Derrickson is a film-lover first and a director second, but he's been quite successful at the latter -- you may know him as the director and co-writer of Marvel's Doctor Strange. (When I was younger, Doctor Strange was one of my favorite comic characters, along with Green Lantern. At least one of them got a great movie.) Scott was gracious enough to take time from a very busy schedule to sit down for a chat about a wide number of topics. Using Doctor Strange as a template, we go in some detail through the immensely complicated process of taking a modern blockbuster movie from pitch to screen. But Scott's genre of choice is horror -- his other films include Sinister and The Exorcism of Emily Rose -- and we move on to discussing why certain genres seem universal, before tackling even bigger issues about worldviews (Scott is Christian, I'm a naturalist) and how they affect one's life and work. Scott Derrickson is an acclaimed director, producer, and screenwriter. He earned his M.A. in film production from the University of Southern California. His films as a director include Hellraiser: Inferno, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Sinister, Deliver Us from Evil, and Doctor Strange. He has written or co-written numerous other films, including Land of Plenty (directed by Wim Wenders) and Devil's Knot (directed by Atom Egoyan). Hey guys! Jim here. Well, I'm nowhere to be found in this episode other than the ad and parody song. I had to take a couple weeks off, so I enlisted the help of two of my favorite previous guests to take the helm for an epic examination of a favorite Canadian filmmaker of theirs. Bill Ackerman and Al Kwiatkowski took it upon themselves to discuss the entire filmography of one Atom Egoyan, whose two films EXOTICA and THE SWEET HEREAFTER were highly acclaimed in the late 90s and well worth your time. But what about the films prior to those two as well as his latter work? Listen in on an incredibly enlightening discussion on a filmmaker you should definitely become more familiar with, if you're not already! Much gratitude to Bill and Al for their hard work and for their terrific conversation that you won't want to miss. Devil's Knot was a huge bummer and led inevitably to horrifying West Memphis 3 discussion, then we talked about X-Men for an hour to help us forget. So we made that discussion into a bonus episode to offer as an alternative to Devil's Knot, or to listen to after to cheer you up and help you forget. Always forget. So go ahead and pick your own which one you want to listen to or whatever.
With Matthew d'Ancona Antonio Pappano, music director of the Royal Opera House, talks about Puccini's first great operatic success, Manon Lescaut. We review Devil's Knot, the latest film from Atom Egoyan. Based on a true story about the savage murders of three boys in Arkansas in 1993, the film stars Colin Firth as Ron Lax, the case's private investigator. Writer Anne Washburn talks about her play Mr Burns, where The Simpsons provide the narrative in a post-apocalyptic world, and pop songs assume a similarly revered cultural position. Art critic Adrian Searle discusses a large retrospective of Banksy's work including paintings, prints and sculptures. Street art is not included in the exhibition, which has been curated without the involvement of the mysterious artist. Producer Claire Bartleet.
