Astrophysicist Adam Frank is a big fan of science and movies. He's even been a science adviser to Marvel's "Doctor Strange." So we asked Adam to give us his sci-fi films of the decade - movies that tell us about striking the right balance between science and storytelling. Here are the movies we couldn't get to in the episode: 'Annihilation' (2018), 'Coherence' (2013), 'Gravity' (2013) and 'Looper' (2012). Special Halloween edition? Scott Derrickson is a film-lover first and a director second, but he's been quite successful at the latter -- you may know him as the director and co-writer of Marvel's Doctor Strange. (When I was younger, Doctor Strange was one of my favorite comic characters, along with Green Lantern. At least one of them got a great movie.) Scott was gracious enough to take time from a very busy schedule to sit down for a chat about a wide number of topics. Using Doctor Strange as a template, we go in some detail through the immensely complicated process of taking a modern blockbuster movie from pitch to screen. But Scott's genre of choice is horror -- his other films include Sinister and The Exorcism of Emily Rose -- and we move on to discussing why certain genres seem universal, before tackling even bigger issues about worldviews (Scott is Christian, I'm a naturalist) and how they affect one's life and work. Scott Derrickson is an acclaimed director, producer, and screenwriter. He earned his M.A. in film production from the University of Southern California. His films as a director include Hellraiser: Inferno, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Sinister, Deliver Us from Evil, and Doctor Strange. He has written or co-written numerous other films, including Land of Plenty (directed by Wim Wenders) and Devil's Knot (directed by Atom Egoyan). To celebrate our podcast reaching 15 episodes, we wanted to give you a glimpse of a special context from the unreleased pilot episode David Gutsche and Christian Hagen recorded about Marvel's Doctor Strange! In this clip, you'll hear what we think is the best segment from that episode, the context which convinced us we could make this little show of ours into the weird deep dive it is today. ALSO, stick around as we announce the movie for our next full-length episode! We can barely wait to tell you, it's going to be so good, you have no idea, just wait for it.

Doug and Justin kick things off this week by talking about how hard it is to breakdown and analyze comedy. The two dorks then seamlessly transition into a discussion about Marvel's Doctor Strange since Justin finally joined the civilized world and watched it. Doug then realized he got bamboozled by a fake movie news article and proceeds to explain why he hates April Fools Day. Doug also brings Justin up to speed on some new PC games he thinks everyone should know about. Things are wrapped up with a throw-down between Neo and Doctor Strange.
Arrogance, identity, and redemption--the journey of Doctor Strange. Jay Sherer and Sam Welbaum review and discuss Scott Derrickson's film Doctor Strange. They start with a spoiler-free review, and then dig into some of the deeper themes. Questions posed by Doctor Strange, include: Steven Strange is an arrogant bastard, but he's also the best surgeon in the world. What's the relationship between arrogance and success? What rules govern that relationship? This movie has quite a bit to say about identity. What do you think the movie tells us about our identity? What can you draw out of it? What rules govern this multiverse and the multiple dimensions that are referenced here? “Healing through belief? I do not believe in fairytales. We are made of matter, and nothing more. There's no such thing as spirit!” Strange says. And then he's punched into the Astral plane and the multiverse. What do you think the relationship between the “spirit” or “soul” and the Astral Dimension? “I have to surrender to control it? That doesn't make sense!” Are we supposed to surrender, or should we work harder? Doctor Strange. The Matrix. Inception. These are all fanciful films, but they draw on the perceived reality of our own experiences. How do you think all these films are related? Kaecilius, The Ancient One, and Mordo all have different perspectives on “breaking the natural law.” What does it mean to “break the natural law"? Which character's perspective do you side with? Why? The Ancient One, at one point in the movie, turns to Steven Strange, and asks, “Who are you in this vast multiverse?” How would you answer that same question? Remakes are everywhere, and generally they are done horribly wrong or blandly. We even started a podcast specifically to address that in Remake This Movie RIGHT, where we remade our favorites in the mold of a film fans would like. Unfortunately, Hollywood doesn’t think that way. They want by-the-numbers retreads and name recognition. Everything is a brand now, if it’s identifiable, it could sell. If not as a movie, as a TV show. And nothing is sacred. Well this week, we are going to discuss some of our choices for what should get a remake. Not necessarily based on name, but on concepts or possibilities. If you could remake a film that maybe didn’t come together as strong as it could have been, or perhaps was a bit ahead of its time, what movie would you choose? After our normal episode, we discuss our reactions to Marvel’s latest superhero launch, as Benedict Cumberbatch dons the cloak of Doctor Strange. So what do you get when you take Marvel, Benedict Cumberbatch, magic, and the director of Sinister (not to mention the co-writer formerly known as CARLYLE on Spill.com, remember that, maybe, possibly), and a whole load of magic and psychedelic sorcery and trippy visuals? Somehow, Doctor Strange comes together. But did it for the hosts of Wages of Cinema? Jack and Andrew saw the movie and, as with other tentpole comic book movies, they're joined by Guest Star Matt (Catania, https://mattthecatania.wordpress.com), and maybe a cameo too by a very special part of the Wages of Cinema family. Is it just another ho-hum origin story? Or do the visuals distinguish it as one of THE major Marvel releases? And what about that thing called... white privilege(?) Yes, that may come up as well. Inside The Mouse Castle: Disney News, Information and Commentary
The Force is strong with us Inside The Mouse Castle this week. Just about every story Tim and Anthony bandy about has some connection to Star Wars. This wasn't by design. It's just how the news stream happens sometimes. We like it. Tim starts with his first impressions of Disney Infinity 3.0 and the Star Wars play set that comes with it: Twilight of the Republic. With the help of Tim's grandkids, they gave it a good run over the weekend. The kids loved it. Tim liked the look of TOTR--and certainly felt the Star Wars characters are welcome--but he couldn't help but feel this was just more of the same from Disney Infinity. Quest, destroy bad guys, rinse, repeat. Here's what else we've got on today's show. It's more fun than shooting womp rats in Beggar's Canyon: How many box office records will Star Wars: The Force Awakens break after it opens on December 18th? We're pretty sure its opening weekend number are going to be through the roof. Industry analysts are predicting a $615 million opening--the biggest ever. It's certain to be bolstered by a huge presence on IMAX screens around the world. To make way for Star Wars Land at Disneyland, Big Thunder Ranch will close its gates on January 11, 2016. The ranch's petting zoo will close on January 10th. Disneyland has a Star Wars Half Marathon event in January. Next April, Walt Disney World will get one as well. Star Wars Half Marathon - The Dark Side will be held April 14-17, 2016. The event will include half-marathon, 10K and 5K races. Registration at runDisney.com starts September 22nd. On Sunday, Tim is running his first half-marathon ever--at Disneyland, of course. The Disneyland Half-Marathon Weekend starts this Thursday. Will you be there? Look for Tim in his usual Mouse Castle garb. Ready for a global unboxing of Star Wars toys on YouTube? Yeah, we're not sure what to make of it either. But visit the Star Wars YouTube channel this Thursday for a preview of merchandise from Star Wars: The Force Awakens--much of which will start appearing in stores September 4th, dubbed "Force Friday." (Note: On ITMC, we got our dates confused. The worldwide online unboxing begins on September 3rd. The products will launch on September 4th). Hannibal's Mads Mikkelsen is reported to be in talks to join the cast of Marvel's Doctor Strange. With Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton and Chiwetel Ejiofor already on board, this is going to be one star-studded MCU installment. Enjoy! www.TheMouseCastle.com
