Tric and Heppa learn about the power of stories from the dwarvish bard Glammur. Scene 12 GM Notes The Battle for Wesnoth video game is a turn-based strategy game. Gender identity and sexual orientation don't factor into it. However, tabletop roleplaying is an immersion into a full world. For me, that means a world populated by a diverse cast, just like real life is. Although I don't necessarily introduce characters by explicitly announcing these things, as the GM, I make that the reality in the game. You may have noticed that Glammur is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns. This campaign includes characters who are, among other things, nonbinary, genderfluid, transgender, homosexual, bisexual, and asexual, just like the world we inhabit does. You may not always realize when a character has one of these traits… again, just like in real life. Our character art by Del Borovic and the map we refer to (by me!) can be found here. The Rings Of Power Episode 7 The Eye Synopsis Episode Written by Jason Cahill Episode Directed by Charlotte Brändström Series showrunners John D. Payne and Patrick McKay Based on "The Lord of the Rings" and appendices by J.R.R. Tolkien The village is aflame, buried in soot and ash. The survivors make for a nearby hill and the Numenorean base camp, where it is revealed that the Queen Regent Miriel has lost her eyesight, and Elendil begins to realise that his son, Isildur, is lost, presumed dead, after attempting to save people from a burning house. Upon reaching the encampment, Theo who has been accompanied by Galadreil is reunited with Bronwyn and Arondir, and Galadriel is promised further Númenórean support by Miriel to defeat their common enemy, though Elendil is resentful of Galadriel's appearance having brought these events on the Numenoreans and his son. As the Númenóreans depart, a wounded Halbrand, found with a gash in his side, is in urgent need of Elvish medicine, as Galadriel brings him with her back to Lindon.Elsewhere, Nori's caravan finish their migration, but they find the other Harfoots lamenting the destruction of their grove due to the eruption of Orodruin. The Stranger's attempt to mend a tree appears to fail, so Sadoc, leader of the Harfoots, sends him away with a map of his constellation. The following day, however, the entire grove has regrown. While the Harfoots rejoice, they are found by a mysterious trio of Witches in White who are in search of the Stranger. After failing to mislead them, the trio burn the caravans. Wanting to protect their friend, a group of Harfoots set out to warn him. In Khazad-dûm, Elrond offers a deal for the Dwarvish mithril, but King Durin III declines, stating the Elven Age has ended. As Elrond departs, Durin IV witnesses mithril's ability to cure the Elven blight. He brings Elrond and begins to mine for the ore himself. Just as he strikes a massive mithril vein, King Durin arrives and banishes Elrond while also stripping Durin IV of his royal position before sealing the mine, though unbeknownst to him, a Balrog deep underground awakens. In the destroyed Southland village, Adar and his army claim victory and rename the land Mordor. Tric and Heppa make an appeal to Lord Knutan, leader of the Untdunben dwarves. Scene 10Scene 11 GM Notes Several units from the Battle for Wesnoth video game make an appearance in this arc. The party was attacked by Vampire Bats. Mari-Elin is a Footpad. Trigadur is a Dwarvish Thunderguard. And Lord Knutan, not only is he a Dwarvish Lord unit, but he's actually a character from Eastern Invasion, where he makes an appearance in Scenario 2. One of the fun things about making an RPG campaign from the video game was picking out little pieces of lore here and there that could inspire far more elaborate events at our table. This episode also introduces the bard Glammur. Their importance to the campaign is reflected in their inclusion in our group character portrait, where they can be seen sitting on the right. Their look was inspired by the Dwarvish Explorer unit. The map we refer to (by me!) can be found here. Human Traits It's hard to make generalizations about humans, but your human character has these traits. Ability Score Increase. Your ability scores each increase by 1. Age. Humans reach adulthood in their late teens and live less than a century. Alignment. Humans tend toward no particular alignment. The best and the worst are found among them. Size. Humans vary widely in height and build, from barely 5 feet to well over 6 feet tall. Regardless of your position in that range, your size is Medium. Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet. Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and one extra language of your choice. Humans typically learn the languages of other peoples they deal with, including obscure dialects. They are fond of sprinkling their speech with words borrowed from other tongues: Orc curses, Elvish musical expressions, Dwarvish military phrases, and so on.

Dwarf Dwarf Traits Your dwarf character has an assortment of inborn abilities, part and parcel of dwarven nature. Ability Score Increase. Your Constitution score increases by 2. Age. Dwarves mature at the same rate as humans, but they're considered young until they reach the age of 50. On average, they live about 350 years. Alignment. Most dwarves are lawful, believing firmly in the benefits of a well-‐‑ordered society. They tend toward good as well, with a strong sense of fair play and a belief that everyone deserves to share in the benefits of a just order. Size. Dwarves stand between 4 and 5 feet tall and average about 150 pounds. Your size is Medium. Speed. Your base walking speed is 25 feet. Your speed is not reduced by wearing heavy armor. Darkvision. Accustomed to life underground, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray. Dwarven Resilience. You have advantage on saving throws against poison, and you have resistance against poison damage. Dwarven Combat Training. You have proficiency with the battleaxe, handaxe, light hammer, and warhammer. Tool Proficiency. You gain proficiency with the artisan's tools of your choice: smith's tools, brewer's supplies, or mason's tools. Stonecunning. Whenever you make an Intelligence (History) check related to the origin of stonework, you are considered proficient in the History skill and add double your proficiency bonus to the check, instead of your normal proficiency bonus. Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and Dwarvish. Dwarvish is full of hard consonants and guttural sounds, and those characteristics spill over into whatever other language a dwarf might speak. Hill Dwarf As a hill dwarf, you have keen senses, deep intuition, and remarkable resilience. Ability Score Increase. Your Wisdom score increases by 1. Dwarven Toughness. Your hit point maximum increases by 1, and it increases by 1 every time you gain a level.

The Fellowship mourns Gandalf quickly before moving on to put as much distance as possible between themselves and Moria. Gimli makes a quick stop at a legendary Dwarvish tourist attraction, but Aragorn leaves the car running, hoping to make it to Lothlórien before dark (he’s got rewards points, and all the rooms are Orc-free). Legolas suddenly remembers that, oh yeah, Frodo almost died… so Aragorn pulls over to tend to the wounded, and to deliver an alarming joke about Hobbit-poaching which must draw at least four slightly terrified stares.

Second Breakfast: Discussing Middle Earth

After the warg attack the weather changes again, becoming sunny and clear. That’s terrible news, of course, since now the Fellowship is visible to any unfriendly eyes that may be watching. They must get under the mountains quickly, but first they have to find the Elven Door into Moria; and someone still needs to tell Sam that he can’t take his little pony underground. We examine the implications of separate doors for guests, talk about Tolkien’s flexibility with moon phases, and call a lifeline for a question about Dwarvish word-nerdery that is beyond our skill to nerd.

Boromir blows his horn to make sure everyone for miles around knows about their “secret” departure, and Gimli debates the value of oaths with Elrond before the Fellowship of the Ring says goodbye to the Last Homely House. We get knee-deep in Dwarvish word-nerdery, investigate Tolkien’s (unintentional?) symbolism in choosing Christmas Day as the start of the quest, and pass ourselves off as a couple of hoopy froods who really know where our towels are.

Maps Map of Middle-earth  LoTRproject.com interactive map - Caution: spoilers for new readers! Map of the Small Kingdoms of former Arnor Notes for this episode What Happened Last Time?: The Hobbits have found possibly the strangest thing in Middle-earth in the form of Tom Bombadil. “Master”, “eldest”, “he is as you see him” are just some of the terms used to describe the who and what of good ol’ Tom. Through song and tale he weaves his knowledge and divulges the hearts and goings on of the trees and other fantastic beasts in the Old Forest, and he even knows a thing or two about the Ring, though it curiously doesn’t seem to affect him very much, if at all. Now the Hobbits, are laid to rest before venturing forth from the house of Tom Bombadil back toward the road, and then toward Rivendell. The Story in this Chapter: Waking Leave taking Goldberry is calling after them! A view of the road - but not really An unexpected nap Fog on the Barrow-downs “Follow me!”... “Where are you guys?” Atop the Barrow Within the Barrow Garbed in white, with circlets, and rings A sword lay across their necks A SEVERED ARM crawls toward them like a macabre spider Calling out to Tom Bombadil Frodo finds his voice again. Running in the sun to shake off the darkness Fatty Lumpkin - Tom’s pony! On the road to Bree. Other comments or observations: Angmar!  Carn Dum!   Nick Andrew LOVES THESE PLACES!! Referenced in the Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies as the reason Bolg travels north and Tauriel and Legolas follow him -- the threat of a resurrected Angmar is too much to ignore! LotRO Players who completed the first major story arc of the game's narrative got to know Angmar extremely well. Most of you even got to play through a raid into Carn Dum itself. Speaking of Carn Dum, it's an oddity in the world of Middle-earth as we don’t exactly know what that name means… we can assume it is a compound of Elvish and Dwarvish, in which case it means “the Red Halls.”  Creepy, eh? Angmar was founded in midway point through the third age of ME with a singular purpose… DESTROY any and all remnant of the North that brought about Sauron’s demise at the War of the Last Alliance.   Witch-king!!!!!! Notable Difference(s) from Films: We get a small shot of the fog-laden Barrow-downs as one of the Nazgul looks over it atop his horse. Locations/Distance Traveled/Distance apart: East of the HoTB - up into the Barrow-downs, then northward toward the main road leading into the village of Bree.
