This Good Friday, we wanted to share our friend Bahar's story with you again. Rasool shares how, after a difficult childhood and a desperate season in early adulthood, a stranger reached out to him online to tell him that God loved him. Not long after, he received not one, but two New Testaments, which began a trajectory that ultimately led him to place his faith in Jesus. A relationship with a brother or sister might well be the longest we ever have. It can be a source of huge mutual support in the sharing of great joys, and in the struggles of tough times. But sibling relationships can also be marked by conflict and rivalry, as we've seen in the public fracture of the relationship between Prince William and Prince Harry. Roy Jenkins meets people who've been estranged from their families for many years, and hears about the heartache family fracture can cause. Dr Lucy Blake, developmental psychologist at the University of the West of England, explains that in her research she's found that family estrangement is more common than we might think, but also how our notions of an 'ideal' family are hard to live up to. Fern Schumer Chapman, author of ‘Brother, Sister, Strangers: Sibling Estrangement and the Road to Reconciliation' examines the taboo around sibling estrangement. We examine how religious belief can be the cause painful disputes, and Assia shares how her conversion to Islam led to estrangement with her family. Amanda Morris from the Muslim Council of Britain explains the support offered to new Muslims, and how cherished sibling relationships are in the Qu'ran. We hear how faith can sometimes help heal divides, and Joe Connor from Elam Ministries explains how they help foster reconciliation between Christian converts and their families.

In our third episode of the Encounters with Jesus series, Dara Lynn and Jen will be speaking with an Iranian woman who leads worship for thousands of Farsi speakers and encounters God's presence in more ways than just worship music.Niloofar grew up in Iran in a nominally Muslim home where being a daughter was less valuable than being a son. When her parents became believers through a television program, Niloofar was sceptical. There are a lot of encouraging stories of people from a Muslim background encountering Jesus in the Iran region, and many of us in the West may be asking the question, “Why isn't God doing that in my church?” In our second episode of the Encountering Jesus series, Joe speaks with Afshin, a noted Old Testament scholar and teacher (Afshin is also featured in the Scriptures in Iran season, episode 3). He holds a PhD in biblical studies from a Western seminary and has seen God move in miraculous ways in his life. In our first episode of the Encounters with Jesus series Joe will be speaking with an Iranian woman who spoke with Jesus face to face through a dream.Asrin is from a Kurdish family who are typically hated by the government in Iran. After a terrifying experience as a teenager because of her ethnicity, she wanted to join the Kurdish Militia and fight for justice against the Iranian government but an encounter with Jesus led her to join a different fight. Civil unrest in Iran, sparked by the death of 22-year-old Masha Amini in police custody, has spread across the Iranian Republic. What began as a protest for women's rights has swelled, with demands for greater freedoms and even an overthrow of the state. The issue's dominated Iran's play at the Football World Cup in Qatar – as their team stood in silent protest while their anthem was played. Closer to home, here in Wales hundreds have gathered on the streets to protest under the slogan “Women, Life, Freedom.” In response the country's leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has blamed the West for inciting protests and there's been a fierce crackdown. This week Iran reported that there have been more than 300 deaths and thousands have been arrested as a result of the protests. But what does this really mean for people of faith? And how much do we know about the country and lives of the people who live there? While most Iranians are Shi'i Muslims, it is also home to a number of minority religious communities. To discuss the issues Azim Ahmed is joined by Roozbeh Najarnejad, an Iranian Christian who supports Christian communities in Iran through Elam Ministries. Maral Shams, a teacher from Wales who has been closely involved with the “Women, Life, Freedom” protests here in the UK. Padideh Sabeti, Director for the UK Office of Public Affairs for Bahá'í Community, the largest non-Muslim community in Iran, and Maziyar Ghiabi, the Director of the Centre for Persian and Iranian Studies at Exeter University.

For more than a week, thousands of Iranians have taken to the streets to protest their government. Spurred by anger over a weak economy and increasing fuel and food prices, their grievances accompany frustration that loosening economic sanctions have had little effect on their everyday lives. Nearly all the protesters are Muslims—no surprise in a country where 99 percent of the population adheres to Islam. Despite Muslims’ numeric dominance, some researchers say there’s no country in the world where Christianity is growing faster than in Iran today, according to David Yeghnazar, the executive director of Elam Ministries, a nonprofit that serves Iranian Christians. “Iranians have become the most open people to the gospel,” said Yeghnazar. Unlike in other parts of the Middle East, the country’s historic churches have increasingly taken on an evangelistic role and committed themselves to praying for nonbelievers in their country, he says. Yeghnazar joined associate digital media producer Morgan Lee and editor in chief Mark Galli to discuss how Iranian Christians feel about the latest protests, how recent political history has opened the country to the gospel, and how long Christianity has existed in Persia.
