POPULARITY
Coming out more than sixteen years after its beloved predecessor (2001: A Space Odyssey), this might have been the very first "Legacy Sequel." Also whereas the first film was directed by the late great cinema legend Stanley Kubrick, this one was helmed by journeyman director Peter Hyams (Running Scared, Capricorn One, Timecop) who in tandem with the author (Arthur C. Clarke) of the original source material was determined to craft a more conventional story as opposed to the ground-breaking 1968 classic which was much more abstract in it structure and tone. Picking up nine years after the events of that first film, we follow Dr. Heywood Floyd (Roy Scheider) who planned that previous mission of the USS Discovery to Jupiter where those onboard discovered the mysterious "Monolith." Dr. Floyd is determined to find out what exactly transpired so he hitches a ride with a Soviet mission there commanded by Captain Tanya Kirbuk (Helen Mirren). And what they eventually encounter and discover is...."something wonderful?" Also along for the ride are John Lithgow, Bob Balaban, and Elya Baskin in an epic sci-fi adventure which might not approach the majesty of its predecessor but actually holds up better as pure entertainment, now forty years after it was first released in theaters. Bible News Prophecy with Dr Bob Thiel Artificial Intelligence Deadly Perils What are some of the benefits and risks of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that Arvind Narayanan, Professor of Computer Science at Princeton University mentioned at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit. Will government regulations eliminate the risks? Why or why not? What are AI 'hallucinations'? Did a Google Gemini AI chat bot tell a student that he was a waste and should "Please die," despite programming that was supposed to prevent such? Was the response actually "non-sensical" as Google claimed or instead of being nonsensical, was it in logical English but dangerous? Do AI programs give wrong answers that many may falsely rely upon? Are there any similarities between Gemini's response and the HAL9000 computer in the 1968 movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey? Might governments, including one coming in Europe, intentionally program horrible results? Will the Beast of the Sea and Earth of Revelation 13 use something like AI to require worship as well as to put in totalitarian controls of buying and selling? Although there can be real benefits from AI, will government regulations prevent it from being used by 666? Dr. Thiel and Steve Dupuie address these matters.

It's no longer Kubrick Month because we're late recording and uploading this and P4, but regardless, we're here to complete our Kubrickian Odysseys! Dhruv, Amartya, and Hemant have spent the entirety of July (and will now spend the last week of August and the first week of September) revisiting and discussing 10 (of 13) Kubrick-directed films (the Horror and Noir films will be discussed in October and November, respectively!) plus one conceptualized and obsessed over by him but eventually directed by his dear friend, Steven Spielberg. In Part 4 (of 4), we focus primarily on the monolith of Kubrick's filmography and hard science fiction itself: "2001: A Space Odyssey." Everything from Ridley Scott's "Alien" to Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar" to Denis Villeneuve's "Arrival" to Werner Herzog's philosophy, and most importantly, Michael Bay's "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" is referenced here, as the three of us try to make sense of Kubrick's enigmatic masterpiece. We go through the film chapter by chapter, detailing our interpretations of each of its mysterious, short-story-like building blocks before leaping its two "real" offsprings—"2010—The Year We Make Contact" and, more extensively, Steven Spielberg's "A.I. Artificial Intelligence"—to, hopefully, provide some legitimate answers to 2001's enduring, endless mysteries. Début novembre, lors d'un sommet à Londres, 28 gouvernements ont signé une déclaration de coopération pour évaluer les dangers potentiels derrière l'intelligence artificielle. Greetings from DC! OK, hope all you 2001: A Space Odyssey fans got a chuckle and no HAL9000 is not joining this edition of the podcast! We have a much better guest, Suresh Venkatasubramanian who co-authored the Biden administration's Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights. We've all seen Artificial Intelligence or "AI" making headlines recently, and it's raising critical questions: * How will AI impact our daily lives? * And just how do we regulate it to limit what seems like serious risks? * How do we make sure Big Tech interests do not use “digital trade” agreements to pre-empt AI accountability? Join us for Part One of a special two-part Rethinking Trade series on AI, where we delve into these pressing issues. In this episode, Rethink Trade's Lori Wallach and Daniel Rangel engage in a discussion with Professor Suresh Venkatasubramanian who is now with Brown University after serving as Assistant Director for Science and Justice in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Together, we explore what AI actually is, its real-world applications, how it is affecting us right NOW, and how governments can help limit its threats and maximize its benefits. In Part 1 of this fascinating conversation with Suresh, you'll gain a deeper understanding of what AI is and how it could shape our future.

Think NASA's smartest astronaut. Very intelligent, but the others never really let him talk enough to prove it. He knows his own value, but no one else does. Studied astrophysics under Albert Einstein's grandson, who was one of those professors who let students call him by his first name (Jim.)HENRY NICKERSON as HANK – The ship's computer. Talks like HAL 9000. Is very safe for the group to be around, but everything he says kind of sounds like he's plotting to kill everyone, though he never will. Is programmed to be very concerned for the well-being of the group dynamic. Has a round screen in each room of the ship where he can appear and talk to crew members. He can be removed from the ship so long as a lot of loose wires come along with him.

Digital technology allowed George Lucas to realize his true vision for Star Wars...but it did the same for everyone else. The proliferation of affordable desktop video editing software in the late 1990s and early 2000s led to a new form of fan participation: the Fan Edit. And for the last 20 years, fans have made innumerable bespoke versions of the Star Wars films. THE PHANTOM MENACE without Jar Jar? REVENGE OF THE SITH where Padmé survives at the end? A NEW HOPE cut up to play like a black and white Republic serial? There's a fan edit for every taste (and to address every nitpick). JOSH had the extreme pleasure to chat with one of the best fan editors around, HAL 9000, to discuss what motivates fan editors, how the community rallied around his fan edit of THE RISE OF SKYWALKER, as well as the legal and ethical questions involved with editing someone else's work (and intellectual property). And we ask the all-important question...what does George Lucas think of fan edits? HAL 9000 can be found posting on the forums at originaltrilogy.com where a polite DM may reward you with a link to his superb prequel and sequel edits, or simply following the download instructions here: https://www.reddit.com/r/fanedits/comments/7g7r9a/hal9000_star_wars_prequel_trilogy_fan_edits_now/ NEXT WEEK: All about The Man Who Saved the World, aka TURKISH STAR WARS, with filmmaker, writer, and film historian ED GLASER! What happens when the host of the episode loses contact with America and the Speech Guys while in Europe? Nothing good. Ross, Matt, and Mike struggle to wrap their heads around Hal and the famous speech to his astronaut passenger, Dave, from Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film, "2001: A Space Odyssey". Hear remnants from a 25-minute tangent into Bill Barr and COVID, consider how one truly learns about the stars ("Do you learn more about the stars by going outside and looking at them or researching them in a book?") and which Speech Guys might struggle to disconnect Hal. If you still have some whiskey left in your glass when the episode finishes up, hang around for Matt's recitation of his original poem entitled, "Sculpture", in the post-credits scene.
We're busting out one of the big guns this week as we cover the interesting, confounding, and dazzling masterpiece from Stanley Kubrick - 2001: A Space Odyssey. We go a little longer on this episode, yet somehow still don't seem to cover enough because there's just so much to talk about with this enigmatic wonder. We talk HAL, music, humanity, evolution, the filmmaking process, and more but we still only scratched the surface. Contact us at rollitpodacst@gmail.com or follow us! Have a movie recommendation?DM me on Instagram or Facebook: @themoviecommentarypodcastEmail me: themoviecommentarypodcast@yahoo.comIn the history of cinema, there are certain films that come along that seemingly define their genre. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly for spaghetti westerns, Ben-Hur for the epics, The Shining for horror films, and so many more, but no film defined its genre better than the 1968 Science-Fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey. The making of 2001 is almost as interesting as the movie itself. In 1964, legendary filmmaker Stanley Kubrick met best-selling science-fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke. Together, they started working on a story that was based on a previous short story that Clarke himself had written. In a very unique development process, Kubrick made the movie as Clark wrote the novel. Not only the writing process, but the filming of the movie itself was groundbreaking as well. Specialized sets had to be designed to give the illusion of being in space. Groundbreaking camera tricks were designed to help with the illusion. The special effects were the best of the time, and still somewhat hold up even today, including a special photography trick that gave us the most famous sequence in the movie. (Kubrick won his only Oscar for the effects on 2001) The story of 2001: A Space Odyssey is honestly too convoluted to be typed out in a few short paragraphs. It spans millions of years, beginning in the pre-man era of Earth all the way to the first year of the 21st century. There's feuding man-ape tribes. There's a space station and a moon-base. There's a mission to Jupiter. There's a malfunctioning (or not) computer. There's a bunch of stars. And in the middle of all of it, a big black rectangular monolith. How is all of this connected?
