On October 13th, 1881, the linguist and grammarian Eliezer Ben-Yehuda held what is thought to have been the first modern conversation in Hebrew with two friends at a Paris café. The conversation would have had some serious stumbling blocks, given that the language was still missing numerous modern words including bicycle, towel, and – crucially for being in a cafe – a word for coffee. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly discuss the connection between Hebrew's revival and growing Jewish nationalism; look at the personal lengths Ben-Yehuda was willing to go to make the language take off, including speaking to his son exclusively in Hebrew; and explain why, in the early days, conversing in an ancient language must have been like speaking exclusively in David Bowie song lyrics… Further Reading: • ‘Revival of the Hebrew language' (The Jerusalem Post, 2010): https://www.jpost.com/jewish-world/jewish-news/this-week-in-history-revival-of-the-hebrew-language  • ‘How to revive an ancient language, according to 19th-century Hebrew and Persian revivalists' (University of Washington, 2018): https://jewishstudies.washington.edu/israel-hebrew/reviving-hebrew-persian-ancient-languages-eliezer-ben-yehuda-manekji-limji-hataria/  • ‘Hebrew wasn't spoken for 2,000 years.

What does it mean to be a Zionist? Given the wide range of figures in the movement throughout history, it's difficult to agree on a single definition. Jews dreamt of Zion for thousands of years, and in the 19th century they began to move from utopianism to realism, from dreams to politics. Some leaders were pragmatic in their thinking, such as Eliezer Ben Yehuda, while others were far more idealist, such as Theodor Herzl. How did these different visions come together to form a state? In this episode, Ari discusses this range of perspectives with Rachel Fish. What was Zionism, and what should it be in our own times? Dr. Rachel Fish is founding Executive Director of the Foundation to Combat Anti-Semitism. Fish was most recently Senior Advisor and Resident Scholar of Jewish/Israel Philanthropy at the Paul E. Jews have been longing for Jerusalem for two thousand years. And that's exactly what several poor Yemenite families did. They walked by foot from Sanaa to Jerusalem, only to find out that the Holy city is actually a dump. Gil Hovav's ancestors were one of these families, and when a few generations later, Yemenite jew Moshe Hovav Married the granddaughter of Eliezer Ben Yehuda, reviver of the Hebrew language - Gil Hovav was the result. A sign of the timing of Yeshua's second coming is the blossoming of the fig tree (Matthew 24:32-33). Israel is likened to a fig tree (Hosea 9:10). This DVD explains the major people, issues and events which shape the modern nation of Israel including the roles of Theodor Herzl, Chaim Weizmann, David Ben-Gurion, Eliezer Ben-Yehuda, the Balfour Declaration, the British Mandate, the Jewish resistance movements, WWI, WWII, the Holocaust, the 1947 UN Partition Plan, Israel's wars of 1948, 1956, 1967 and 1973, the creation of the PLO, Oslo, the politics of oil, and the Israel / PLO peace process. The end result of all these things is the end of the exile of the house of Jacob and the return of Yeshua to the earth. Hebrew is a language native to Israel, spoken by over 9 million people worldwide, of which over 5 million are in Israel. Historically, it is regarded as the language of the Israelites and their ancestors, although the language was not referred to by the name Hebrew in the Tanakh. The earliest examples of written Paleo-Hebrew date from the 10th century BCE. Hebrew belongs to the West Semitic branch of the Afro-asiatic language family. Modern Hebrew is one of the 2 official languages of the State of Israel (the other being Modern Standard Arabic), while premodern Hebrew is used for prayer or study in Jewish communities around the world today. Ancient Hebrew is also the liturgical tongue of the Samaritans, while modern Hebrew or Arabic is their vernacular. As a foreign language, it is studied mostly by Jews and students of Judaism and Israel, and by archaeologists and linguists specializing in the Middle East and its civilizations, as well as by theologians in Christian seminaries. The Hebrew language is the thread that has bound the Jewish people together for millennia, both in liturgy and literature, and, in ancient times, as a spoken language. In the history of modern Zionism, however, if there is 1 event more miraculous than the establishment of the State of Israel, it is the revival of Hebrew as its common tongue. To make this revitalization possible, an uncommon organization was formed: The Academy of the Hebrew Language, the Israeli body with legislated authority to study, guard, and guide the development of the Hebrew language. The miracle of its rejuvenation today is credited to the work of journalist/scholar Eliezer Ben-Yehuda, often called the Father of Modern Hebrew. There were other Hebrew grammarians, scholars, & teachers of general topics. A local scholar of the Hebrew language is our very own Rabbi Michael Harvey who will teach Hebrew at the University of the Virgin Islands, St. Thomas campus.
