Day 557 - Tariffs, tech brain drain and manna from Sicily

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Tech editor Sharon Wrobel and archaeology reporter Rossella Tercatin join host Jessica Steinberg for today's episode. The setting of a 17% tariff on Israel by the US appears to be paused for the moment, as Wrobel discusses. Israel thought it could receive a reduction on the tariff, the main worry is the indirect impact and talk of a recession in Israel's tiny market and the instability and uncertainty that could cause. There are ongoing negotiations with efforts to protect Israeli companies and concerns over exposure to machinations in global markets and the value of Israeli savings. Over 8,000 tech employees have left Israel in recent months and Israel was downgraded in the global ranking of top 50 wealthiest cities as millionaires and tech workers relocated, following first the judicial overhaul and then the ongoing war and hostage situation. Wrobel discusses the biggest concern in that shift, given the high-tech sector's payment of taxes, and its effect on the state and the Israeli economy. Tercatin discusses research at the Academy of the Hebrew Language, looking at how Hebrew accents developed across different communities and millennia, and the role of cultural heritage in preserving those language differences. She also talks about a Sicilian farmer who is part of a centuries-old ritual to harvest a sweet, white sap from the bark of ash trees, a syrup known as manna. Tercatin describes the process and the substance, following an interview with the 75-year-old Sicilian farmer on the eve of the holiday of Passover, when Jews across the world commemorate the Exodus from Egypt, and when they ate manna in the desert. This conversation can also be viewed here: Please check out The Times of Israel's ongoing live blog for more updates. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. US bureau chief Jacob Magid joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet US President Donald Trump at 1 p.m. local time at the White House. The two leaders are expected to discuss the new tariffs Trump imposed on Israel, efforts to roll back Iran and its proxy network and hostage talks with Hamas. Taking each point in turn, Magid fill us in on what to look out for from this spontaneous trip and what Netanyahu hopes to accomplish. Hamas is prepared to release all of the remaining hostages at once in exchange for a permanent ceasefire, a senior Palestinian official familiar with the ongoing truce talks told Magid last week. Magid was approached by a Hamas figure who resides outside of Gaza, who wants Israelis to know that amid Israel’s longstanding rejection of this type of trade, Hamas is still prepared to release a number of hostages as part of a renewed temporary ceasefire. We hear more. The Hebrew name of a spotted orange butterfly has been changed to honor murdered hostage Ariel Bibas by the Academy of the Hebrew Language, the Bibas family announced Friday. The academy last week officially informed the family, and on Thursday hand-delivered a letter addressed to Bibas’s father, Yarden — who was also taken hostage but released in February under a ceasefire deal — of the final decision to rename Melitaea ornata (eastern knapweed fritillary). Using one of the biblical names of Jerusalem, Ariel, the name of the butterfly was replaced in Hebrew from Kitmit Yerushalayim (Orange Jerusalem) to Kitmit Ariel (Orange Ariel) in honor of the four-year-old. Borschel-Dan explains the back story behind this change. Please see today's ongoing liveblog for more updates. We examine how the messianic prophesy of Isaiah 53:7 should be properly translated (hint: every English translation is missing something). We look at the significance of Jesus' response before the high priestly court in Matthew 26:63-65: "You have said so." We dig into the complicated question of what language Jesus was speaking when he cried out "My God, My God, why have you forsaken me" in Matthew 27:46 and Mark 15:34. We unpack the way Psalm 22 serves as a motif in the passion narrative. And we detail the meaningful textual nuances of the restoration of Peter in John 21:15-19. On October 13th, 1881, the linguist and grammarian Eliezer Ben-Yehuda held what is thought to have been the first modern conversation in Hebrew with two friends at a Paris café. The conversation would have had some serious stumbling blocks, given that the language was still missing numerous modern words including bicycle, towel, and – crucially for being in a cafe – a word for coffee. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly discuss the connection between Hebrew's revival and growing Jewish nationalism; look at the personal lengths Ben-Yehuda was willing to go to make the language take off, including speaking to his son exclusively in Hebrew; and explain why, in the early days, conversing in an ancient language must have been like speaking exclusively in David Bowie song lyrics… Further Reading: • ‘Revival of the Hebrew language' (The Jerusalem Post, 2010): https://www.jpost.com/jewish-world/jewish-news/this-week-in-history-revival-of-the-hebrew-language  • ‘How to revive an ancient language, according to 19th-century Hebrew and Persian revivalists' (University of Washington, 2018): https://jewishstudies.washington.edu/israel-hebrew/reviving-hebrew-persian-ancient-languages-eliezer-ben-yehuda-manekji-limji-hataria/  • ‘Hebrew wasn't spoken for 2,000 years. Grace and peace to you. I'm Rev. Joe Cailles, the pastor of Peakland United Methodist Church in Lynchburg Virginia. Today is Wednesday, June 14, 2023. Through the month of June, I'm posting my reflections on the scripture lessons for Sunday's worship services. We're reading from Genesis this month and following the family of Abraham and Sarah, and their descendants, and I'm using a wonderful translation of Genesis created by Dr. Everett Fox, who is a Professor of Judaic and Biblical Studies at Clark University in Massachusetts. Dr. Fox's translation uses the Hebrew names for Abraham and Sarah, Avraham and Sara, and captures the rhythms of the Hebrew Language. Adonai said to Avram, Go-you-forth from your land, from your kindred, from your father's house to the land that I will let you see. I will make a great nation of you and will give-you-blessing and will make your name great. Be a blessing! We heard that passage from Geneses chapter 12, last Sunday in worship. God calls Avram and Sarai to go to a new land so that God can give them descendants who will be a blessing to all the clans of the soil, to all the people of the earth. This is surprising news for Avram and Sarai, because they have no children and they are well past their childbearing and child raising years, but off they go to be blessed and to be a blessing. As I said last Sunday in the sermon, we today, who are among the spiritual descendants of Avram and Sarai, are to be a blessing to all the clans of the soil as well. We who follow Jesus are meant be a blessing to all the world around us. Sometimes we get that right. Sometimes we get that so wrong. For Avram and Sarai, almost immediately they question God and make all sorts of bad decisions. Each time God reiterates that God will give them descendants they question and hem and haw and at one point Sarai even laughs in the face of God, such is her disbelief. I like that part. I like questions and pushback and laughing at God. That's how we learn and grow in our faith. That's how we grow and learn more about God. Ask questions! Seek better answers than what I give you or what the church gives you. Seek better answers from what the world gives you. Avram and Sarai do make a huge mistake though. They decide that since Sarai is too old to bear a child, they will have Avram have a baby with Hagar, Sarai's maid. That's not what God wants to happen, and it's not clear how Hagar feels about the situation. It does not go well. Hagar and Avram have a son together, Ishmael, but the household is not happy and Avram and Sarai banish Hagar and Ishmael. Hagar despairs that she and her son will die but God hears them, and God provides for them. Hagar and Ishmael survive and find a home for themselves, and Ishmael becomes the father of his own people. The Muslim people today claim Ishmael as their ancestor. God makes a way even when we mess things up. In Genesis Avram and Sarai become Avraham and Sara, Abraham and Sara, and God does make good on the promise. They have a son named Yitzhak, Isaac, which means, One who laughs and rejoices. Sara laughed at God. Now God and Sara and Avram laugh and rejoice at the newborn baby. I love the idea that God laughs with us, that God delights in our delight and shares our joy. The joy and delight do not last. What comes next for Avraham and Sara and Yitzhak is a trial, a test of their faith which is brutal and life changing for them. We'll hear that story from Genesis 22 next Sunday, June 18 in worship. Join us online or in-person for Sunday worship at Peakland.

What is so special about the Hebrew language? It's just one of the languages spoken in Israel right? Hebrew is so much more than a language! It embodies the entire Jewish community; it was the language the Bible was written in, and now it spreads even beyond the borders of Israel. Today, the Teacher and the Preacher talk about the importance of the Hebrew language and how much it has changed within the last 20 years. The Teacher and the Preacher is a weekly radio program--hosted by Dave McGarrah, Senior Pastor at Deer Flat Church in Caldwell, Idaho, and Aaron Lipkin from Israel--that airs each Sunday at 10:30 am and 7:30 pm here on 94.1 The Voice KBXL and also on Sunday evenings at 5 pm on our sister station 790 KSPD. They are a unique phenomenon on the airwaves – a Christian and a Jew in an ongoing dialogue – celebrating the many commonalities but never shying away from the differences. They offer their listeners insights into each other's faiths that don't come up much elsewhere, that can only come through sincere conversation. The weekly discussion is more than a program about a topic; it's a demonstration of how God can bring two people together from 9,000 miles away to bridge the differences, learn from each other, and strengthen their own faiths. If you would like to learn more about this fantastic radio ministry, please visit their website at theteacherandthepreacher.com.

However the Bible text is secure and genuine and we can have confidence in the written Scriptures without worrying about its accuracy. Suitability: For more advanced Bible students. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Political correspondent Tal Schneider and military correspondent Emanuel Fabian join host Amanda Borschel-Dan. We're a year to the coalition that formed the 36th government. Did Scheneider expect it to make it so long? Schneider spoke with New Hope head Gideon Sa'ar yesterday. The justice minister has issued strong warnings against his fellow members of the diverse coalition. How does he see the possibility for continued cooperation across a swath of parties? One of the big sticking points is the West Bank regulations. Let's say that they don't pass. Then what happens? Fabian makes sense for us of the many reports over the weekend about an Israeli strike on the Damascus international airport. Fabian also reports on an unprecedented conference that took place yesterday where military and civilian leaders assessed Israel's readiness under a variety of emergencies. And finally, Schneider unveils a number of new Hebrew words recently released by the Academy of the Hebrew Language in the field of politics. Discussed articles include: Bennett, Lapid in unity plea as coalition teeters: ‘We won't give up on our country' Shuttering Damascus airport, Israel ramps up its efforts to foil Iran arms transfers At conference, officials warn Israel unprepared to deal with major emergency Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Political correspondent Tal Schneider and senior analyst Haviv Rettig Gur join host Amanda Borschel-Dan. Yesterday the coalition shelved a bill to renew the extension of Israeli criminal and some civil law to Israelis living in the West Bank, just hours before it was set to come up for its first vote. We discuss what the lack of support for the bill may mean. We received word this morning that the United Arab Emirates and Israel are set to sign a Free Trade Agreement. What does this new agreement signify? Israeli teachers called a mini-strike yesterday afternoon and tens of thousands protested in Tel Aviv. What was the impetus to the strike right now? Finally, Schneider recently visited the Hebrew University's Givat Ram campus where the much misunderstood Academy of the Hebrew Language is housed. Did she happen to learn the Hebrew word for podcast? Discussed articles include: Lacking votes, coalition pulls bid to extend application of Israeli law to settlers Ideology aside: Right-wing opposition leaders vow to defeat all coalition bills 20,000 teachers protest in Tel Aviv for higher wages: ‘End the disrespect' Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts.
