History of Israel: Gideon, Abimelech and the Failure of Man

Judges, as a book, is about man's failure and inability to follow God. Nowhere better do we see this than the stories of Gideon and Abimelech. Gideon goes from great faithfulness and victory to idolatry in almost the blink of an eye. This leads to what is considered his legacy in his son Abimelech. In the end, it's a failure for everyone involved when they don't follow the Lord.If you are enjoying Bible Backdrop, please leave a 5-star rating and review. The Complicated History of Israel and South Africa's Anti-Apartheid Movement

Tel Aviv Review

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 24, 2026 50:02

What did South African anti-apartheid activists once think about Israel and Zionism? The answer is more complicated than most seem to think. Dr. Asher Lubotzky, research fellow at the University of Houston's Department of Political Science, takes us through the extraordinary—and often surprising—relationship between the South African anti-apartheid movement and Israel, from the birth of both countries in 1948 through the Cold War, the end of apartheid, and into the present. Lubotzky is the author of Shifting Solidarities: The South African Anti-Apartheid Movement's Perception of Zionism. In the early years, some of the movement's most prominent activists actually supported Israel. Jewish and non-Jewish communists saw the new Jewish state as an anti-fascist, socialist project. African nationalists found parallels between Zionism and their own struggle for national liberation. And Israel itself was actively reaching out to anti-apartheid movements in Africa. So how did that relationship turn into today's association of Israel with apartheid? The answer involves the Six-Day War, Israel's growing military ties with Pretoria, the Cold War, South Africa's Jewish community, and shifting ideas about colonialism and national liberation. It's a fascinating history of how political alliances change—and how today's certainties can look very different when viewed through the lens of the past.

The Sanhedrin, or rabbinical council, is officially petitioning heaven to reveal the Jewish messiah (Mashiach ), destroy all the enemies of Israel called “mixed multitudes,” and to construct the third temple. In Jewish eschatology, this would bring about the end of the world as we know it and the establishment of a global Judaic empire. Numerous rabbis have spoken about why and how this would be accomplished. The most powerful “mixed multitude” is the United States which must be destroyed as punishment for Rome, or Edom. The false prophet Jesus Christ must be mocked and his followers defiled. The temple must be built at all costs, including the provocation of a global war. The billions of deaths are necessary because these people are idol worshipers, i.e., Jewish leaders seek to slaughter almost everyone on the planet because their god commands it in the name of idol worship. Rabbis have said that the non-religious would be protected by their god to destroy the religious before they themselves would be enslaved. This is why they embrace every form of immorality and perversity, as duties to destroy the nonbelievers and the non-chosen. Additionally, we learn that the first and second Temples were actually destroyed by the Jews themselves, and that both Nebuchadnezzar and Titus offered numerous peace proposals to the revolting Jews before deciding to march on them with force. We also learn how the Jewish covenant with god and their divine laws were plagiarized from far older and more sophisticated cultures, from Babylon to Egypt. https://israel365news.com/420045/sanhedrin-rules-it-will-formally-petition-heaven-to-reveal-mashiach-and-rebuild-the-temple/*The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. The history of Israel series continues as we move into Judges 6 with the start of the story of Gideon. The Israelites have fallen away from the worship of Yahweh, so God sends the Midianites to oppress them. After 7 years, they cry out to God for relief and He sends Gideon...the youngest man from an insignificant family. Gideon's faith is tested as God calls him to do a difficult task before taking on the Midianites. Then, after that's done, God whittles down his force to such a small number that it will have to be recognized that God won the battle. How does that happen? The book begins with the aftermath of Joshua's death and we see the people fall into a cycle of falling away from God, being subject to another nation, crying out to God for deliverance, a judge being raised, and then peace for a period of time before the cycle starts again. A word of warning: Judges can be a violent and often disturbing book.
