The summer of 2024 saw the premiere of PHON, brought to life by Sir Simon Rattle and a monumental orchestra, uniting the BR Symphonieorchester with four brass ensembles. The joy of finding the right musical approach for each project using the entire world of sound not only inspires Lorenz in the process of creation but also defines him. ROBIN CAROLAN Robin Carolan is a British-Irish composer and music producer whose distinct artistic voice has gained prominence in both the music and film industries. His recently scored the highly anticipated Robert Eggers film Nosferatu, set to release in theaters December 2024 “From the get-go, it was important to me that I not just write something you'd solely think of as a ‘horror score',” Carolan explains about his Nosferatu score. “I wanted to really lean into the melancholy, tragic aspect of the tale, and even make room for something akin to romance, albeit a very warped kind of romanticism.” Carolan intentionally moved beyond the typical horror score, focusing on capturing the tale's melancholy and tragic elements while weaving in a sense of warped romanticism. The score for Nosferatu features a vast orchestration, including 60 string players, a full choir, various horns and woodwinds, a harpist, and two percussionists. The orchestral richness brings a profound depth to the score. Carolan first garnered attention as the founder of Tri Angle, an independent music label launched in 2010, which became synonymous with innovative and critically acclaimed releases, particularly in the electronic music realm. Carolan's collaborations with artists like Björk, where he was recognized as “the fifth ear” on her 2017 album Utopia, further cemented his reputation as a versatile and influential figure in contemporary music. His film scoring debut came with Robert Eggers' The Northman in 2022, a project that required him to craft a soundscape reflecting the film's brutal and atmospheric narrative. The meticulous attention to detail is a hallmark of the collaborative process between Eggers and Carolan, one that can be described as almost telepathic. The result is music that not only complements the film but also stands on its own as a testament to Carolan's artistry and the enduring power of collaboration.

Wola, a district of Warsaw dear to my heart, is where my family's roots run deep, and I was born in the "na Czystem" Hospital on former Dworska Street (now Kasprzaka). As a child, my parents shared stories of the Wola Massacre, often taking me and my sister to General Sowiński Park, near the former Reduta and St. Wawrzyniec Church. We'd visit a clearing across from Wolska Street, which my father called "the round." This unusual park featured brick or reinforced concrete stairs leading to nowhere, surrounded by mature apple, cherry, and plum trees. My parents explained that this wasn't a park but a vacant lot where pre-war residential buildings stood. During the Warsaw Uprising, Kaminski's Ukrainian troops, collaborating with Germans, burned down houses and murdered civilians. Only chimneys and stairs remained. We also visited Szymański Park, where rural buildings once stood, offering fresh produce. This area is sanctified by the blood of Poles, including my family members, slain by Nazis and Ukrainians.

If you've ever wondered how to attract top interns for your club, look no further. Dr. John Kaminski is a Professor and Associate Head of the Department of Plant Science at The Pennsylvania State University. He serves as Director of the Golf Course Turfgrass Management Program, an 18-month intense training program for future golf course grounds managers. Outside of Penn State, Dr. Kaminski is the Chief Agronomy Officer of GreenSight Agronomy, a Boston-based technology company that utilizes proprietary imaging hardware/software to detect turfgrass stress on golf courses with autonomous drones.  How to Attract Top Talent When trying to win over student interns, most club representatives talk about themselves: their facility, the course, and all the great work the club is doing. But students, like anyone, prefer to talk about themselves.  The best thing you can do as a recruiter is to listen. Ask questions, take an interest in the students, and follow up with them personally. Don't just tell them what your club has to offer, but explain why it benefits them. Give Them a Great Experience Once the interns are on the course, give them a great experience. Go beyond general maintenance tasks; get them involved with management and decision-making, even if they're just a fly on the wall during meetings. Better yet, have them give a presentation to the board about the internship and what they learned.  Most of all, treat your interns with respect. Don't brush off their questions. Take a little time out of your busy day to talk with them. Let them get to know the leadership team, and if you want to go above and beyond, consider bringing in guest speakers for continued education. Remember that your interns are going to share their experience with their friends–if they tell everyone how great it was and how much they learned, that will encourage the next year's students to apply as well.
