My guest this week on “I HAVE TODAY with Diane Forster” is the incredible Felena Hanson. Felena calls herself “unemployable” after her position was eliminated in 2003.  She became an entrepreneur back then…and she's never looked back! When Felena launched her first business, Perspective Marketing, she found her passion for supporting other female entrepreneurs through leadership roles with several professional women's organizations, including Women's Global Network and Ladies Who Launch. In 2010, Felena recognized the trend of the gig economy and the rise of coworking spaces. After nine months of research, she saw a gap in the market for a space that was especially welcoming to women. She launched her first coworking space in San Diego, California, in 2011 and has since built six additional locations across the country. Hera Hub, named after the Greek Goddess of Women, still stands out in the sea of thousands of coworking spaces. This is not only due to its spa-inspired elements but also because of the robust business support.  In addition to in-person, community-building events, the online platform provides members with daily mentoring, accountability, and educational sessions to keep them connected and productive.  Over the last decade, Hera Hub and its family of brands have helped over 13,000 women start or grow their businesses.  Felena is on a mission to reach over 20,000 women. Felena is a published author and international speaker.  Her book, “Flight Club – Rebel, Reinvent, and Thrive: How to Launch Your Dream Business” is available on Amazon. And…on top of all this…Felena had a catastrophic accident in her twenties that it's a miracle she is alive talk about today! Join us for a lively conversation as Felena shares her wisdom and advice to being a women business owner TODAY!

Felena Hanson is the Founder of Hera Hub, a spa-inspired, shared work space and business accelerator centered around female entrepreneurs. Felena takes us through her journey founding Hera Hub as an entrepreneur. Rewinding back to 2010, she was running a small marketing and consulting firm as well as teaching students part-time at a fashion institute. One of her prime goals at the time was to host an eco fashion show, and while searching for the perfect location, stumbled upon San Diego’s first ever coworking space, The HIVE. She fell in love with the idea and almost immediately realized that she wanted to launch something similar of her own. So, in 2011, she founded Hera Hub.  Her main purpose in creating a co-working facility was to foster a greater sense of community among entrepreneurs around the country. Though female focused, the company is open to anyone interested in meeting like-minded individuals in the business world. With COVID-19, Felena has introduced a virtual membership to ensure community growth and support amidst the pandemic.  Listen in with host Neal Bloom as Felena details her life as an entrepreneur driven to have an impact on her community, and her plans moving into 2021.   Felena’s favorite local tacos: City Tacos   Connect with Felena: LinkedIn   Keep up with Hera Hub: Website: https://herahub.com/ LinkedIn Facebook: @herahub   Thanks to our partners at Cox Business for their support in enabling us to grow the San Diego ecosystem.

In this episode of Turning Lemons to Lemonade, you are going to hear from Felena Hanson.  Felena is a serial entrepreneur who has run marketing agencies, been a professor, and most recently launched a number of companies such as Hera Hub, Hera Labs, and Hera Venture Summit.  In Greek Mythology, Hera was the Queen of the Gods.  Hera serves as the inspiration of the Hera Companies. I met Felena in 2011, just after I launched my second San Diego fitness studio.  We were sitting at a networking event, chatting over wine, when she told me a bit more about what she was doing!  Felena was launching her first Hera Hub women’s co-working space in Sorrento Valley San Diego, but was running into struggles locking down her location. Felena spoke a lot of some of her biggest struggles being a women who is building out brick and mortar locations, and dealing with landlords, contractors, and other very male dominated professions – and the fact that she was often marginalized as a woman!  This truly fueled her push for even more resources for women who want to grow businesses of their own! As we chatted, Felena said that she had recently been asked if she had founded Hera Hub in response to the #MeToo movement.  She explained that Hera Hub had been around for years.  Although it is a women focused co-working space, they have men members.  She described how Hera Hub was created so women could invite men to their table – and we could have needed dialogue about business. If you are a woman business owner in San Diego, you must visit Hera Hub.  If you’ve been looking for a women’s co-working space in your town – maybe you’re the right person to launch one!  Hera Hub is licensing new locations!

Felena Hanson was just another woman working from home when she came up with a brilliant idea. While working at home for eight years, she missed having a sense of community and often time struggled to focus. The options in the market at the time, while uber-hip and high tech, were lacking an environment that felt beautiful and clean to her. She realized she was craving a coworking space designed by women, for women, so Felena embarked on creating what she couldn’t find.   And now, five years later, Hera Hub is the first international coworking and shared office space for women (though open to men as well) from Washington, D.C. to Stockholm, Sweden. And although the company specializes in providing inspired spaces for women to work from, the company also hosts training sessions on planning, accounting and other business services – providing continuous support and advice for its members. They also offer an endless supply of coffee and wine! After all, Felena says, in Hera Hub spaces women are truly trying to help one another. “I wanted to create something that was bigger than myself, and bigger than the city that I’m in,” Felena says. “ … It’s an ecosystem of support, collaboration and community.” In episode 31 of I Want Her Job: The Podcast, Editor and Host Polina Selyutin speaks with Felena about launching a business, making mistakes and building a community.

Felena Hanson is a long-time entrepreneur and marketing maven.  Her latest venture, Hera Hub, is a spa-inspired shared workspace and community for female entrepreneurs. This as-needed, flexible work and meeting space provides a productive environment for growing businesses.  Hera Hub members have access to a professional space to meet with clients and to connect and collaborate with like-minded business owners, thus giving them the support they need to be prosperous. I wanted to learn more about Felena's 2020 goal of supporting 20,000 women in the launch and growth of their businesses. Confidence has been most critical in her journey.  It's really important to believe in yourself. One of Felena's philosophies is that, "you're only as strong as your community around you.  You're not meant to launch a business alone." Her advice to aspiring female entrepreneurs Think through the details (e.g., accounting, legalities, etc.) and establish a firm foundation for your business.  Consider this a step by step process. Believe in yourself and find really strong collaborators .  Find that sense of community and you can't find it, build it yourself. Welcome to Episode 22 of Products of the Mind. On this episode, I speak with lifelong entrepreneur and founder of Hera Hub, Felena Hanson. “It’s not about segregation, we have men in the space every day. It’s about creating that environment and that community where women can flourish.” What do you do when you experience three layoffs before the age of 30? Unleash the “entrepreneurial spirit” and become a solopreneur! Today we chat with Felena Hanson, founder of Hera Hub: a spa-inspired coworking space for female entrepreneurs. Felena tells us about growing up in an entrepreneurial family; the decision on whether or not to go to college; and the struggle of being a professional marketer in the tech industry. We’ll learn about how Felena’s trials and tribulations as a marketer initiated her desire to create something new, and how her successful “something new” brought more trials and tribulations. Felena discusses the challenges associated with franchising, and how commercial real estate can be a roadblock for entrepreneurs and startups. What is a coworking space? How does Hera Hub differ from executive suites and other office environments, and why is this such a valuable need? There’s a “prediction that 50-60% of knowledge-based workforce will be independent by 2020…where will all these people work (besides Starbucks)?” Tune in to find out! Felena will talk about how many women running small businesses also have to juggle family life, and therefore feel an affinity with other women in the same situation. A supportive environment where women feel they easily relate to others helps get to that point in the relationship where they know, like, and trust the other person and are therefore more likely to ask for feedback or refer business. Hera Hub is set up to provide a supportive, female focused environment. Barbara Eldridge is your host of Trend Setting Women, a show that is intense, informative and always interesting. Trend Setting Women focuses on showcasing women owners who play the game of business and never give up. Currently, Barbara is the President & Founder of Mind Masters, an organization for entrepreneurs to master the challenges they face in an ever-changing market place.
