43: Embracing the Messiness of Life w/ Luke Iorio

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 1, 2022 53:41

This week I am joined by a special guest and longtime friend Luke Iorio. Luke is the former CEO of IPEC, the professional institute of coaching where I obtained my certification many years ago. He is now a coach and entrepreneur, and he currently hosts his own podcast called “On this Walk.”After going through what he refers to as an “epic burnout stage”, Luke realized that he wasn't in alignment with where he needed to be in life. This began a seven year spiritual journey, during which he stepped down from IPEC and explored different practices and modalities on his own walk toward a deeper discovery of himself and the meanings of Balance, Peace, Fulfillment, and Freedom. In this episode, Luke and I had a much needed conversation about the sacred messiness of life. We talked about what burnout really means, how one gets to that point, and about how important it is for us humans to create a space to regulate, reflect and sit in the sometimes uncomfortable space of embracing the unknown. If you liked our discussion, I encourage you to listen to Part 2 of our discussion on Luke's podcast "On This Walk": https://open.spotify.com/show/7yXk7J8ioPTIXSoN4L65oo

This week I'm joined by Dr. Robert Enright, a pioneering force in the scientific study of forgiveness and a professor in educational psychology at the University of Wisconsin Madison. Over the last nearly 40 years, he and his colleagues have developed a pathway to forgiveness that has helped people who have endured severe personal and societal trauma. His recent work has been focused on bringing forgiveness programs to children so that they can apply these principles more easily as adults. Today we'll talk about what exactly forgiveness is and what it is not, how we go about forgiving even the most severe injustices, and what happens to us in our bodies and in our minds when we do. With Dr. Enright's help, we'll bring the healing power of forgiveness to the front of the conversation, where it needs to be.

She is a dedicated mother, Accountability Coach, Emotional Release Specialist, Kundalini Yogic Alchemist and an international best selling author with her contributions to Legacy Speaks. Her no bullshit approach attracts those who are ready to walk through the shadow and shift things for themselves in big ways. The driving force fueling Brandy's work is to provide the guidance people might need in order to remember why they chose this life so they may fulfill their mission and transcend. In this conversation, Brandy and Lisane discuss walking a path of self expression, the importance of emotional release and some practices for it, as well as the benefits of addressing things in the moment. Paramount to self expression is the time we take daily to tune in and listen to ourselves, to quiet down enough to be able to learn who we truly are. When we walk the planet taking in only external stimuli and reacting to what people are doing and saying and the circumstances that befall us, we can literally carve ourselves out of the equation. The practice of sitting down a couple of times a day, getting quiet, and connecting are ways to help us to witness who we really are, and how we're really behaving on this planet so that we can course correct where we need to or bring out of us the things that we really want to bring out. Vani Shiroor is a mindfulness coach and the founder of Doturminds. She teaches the art of letting go and being mindful through the ancient Indian sand dot art of rangoli. Through this ritual, she introduces you to a greater sense of awareness and shares with you ways that you can bring yourself out of the busyness, chaos, and chatter of the world into the quiet conscious awareness of who you are in the present moment. This week, Lisane and Vani discuss not only what it means to be in a relationship with yourself but what it means to actually be in love with yourself. They also discuss what it means to truly be present without any resistance and how to take a “beginner's mindset” approach to being mindful.  Learn more about Vani and Doturminds at https://doturminds.com/. Adulting can be hard because we go through our childhood experiences, looking for this journey, this end goal of becoming an adult. And so often we get prepared for adulthood with the focus on how we're going to take care of ourselves financially, what we're going to do to be able to afford to care for ourselves materially. And that's really, really important. And unless we've had someone to come along to tell us that we are so much more than the jobs that we have and the material things that we're able to accumulate, that we're also human beings who are here on this planet encountering relationships and circumstances and parts of ourselves, then we may also find ourselves in a position of negotiating and figuring out who we are and how to take care of ourselves.  Leo Flowers is a comedian, a coach, and a thought leader in the area of caring for yourself and paying attention to who you are. He is spending his life really responding to the question of how do you take care of yourself? And he does this and helps people to answer that question for themselves through his comedy. And also through the work that he does with other people.  You can find out more about Leo at: http://www.leoflowers.com/  https://www.youtube.com/user/leoflowers  Leo Flowers is a former Div-I college athlete, has a Masters in Counseling/Psychology, is a stand-up comedian, and a mental health advocate. He was diagnosed with depression at an early age and has used that experience to help destigmatize it for others on his Suicide prevention podcast, "Before You Kill Yourself," which has over 100,000 downloads! His goal is to bring awareness to mental health by interviewing best-selling book authors, mental health experts, and sharing their understanding of how thoughts become emotions in order to teach people how to thrive. As an entertainer, he's performed all over the world and you may have seen him on Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen or Comedy Central's “This Week At the Cellar.”
