In this powerful episode, we're joined by Kevin Lowe, an inspirational speaker and podcast host who shares his remarkable journey of losing his sight at 17 and discovering an entirely new way to "see" the world. Through launching his own travel agency, creating a podcast during the pandemic, learning how to 'see' through sound and now inspiring others through speaking, Kevin exemplifies resilience in its purest form. His personal equation—"faith plus family equals a life worth living"—reminds us all to identify what gives our lives meaning, especially during our darkest moments. Kevin's story isn't just about overcoming blindness—it's about transforming limitation into possibility and finding purpose in pain. As he puts it, "Through the vulnerability of the brain that I became blind, but it's also through the power of the brain that I learned to see again." Follow Kevin's journey on his podcast "Grit, Grace and Inspiration" or learn more about his speaking at kevinspeaks.org. "Sometimes the signs of a vision issue don't show up in an eye exam—they show up in your child's behavior."In this episode, Jessica shares three key behaviors at home that could indicate your child is struggling with a hidden vision issue. While a 20/20 eye exam might suggest everything is fine, these red flags could signal there's more going on beneath the surface.Behaviors to Watch For:Difficulty Paying Attention – Symptoms that mimic ADHD, like trouble focusing on tasks, could be related to convergence insufficiency or other vision challenges.Emotional Exhaustion After School – If your child melts down or becomes irritable at home, it may be due to the strain of compensating for vision issues throughout the school day.Clumsiness and Spatial Awareness Issues – Frequent tripping, bumping into objects, or difficulty with left/right orientation may point to problems with depth perception or visual processing.Jessica explains how these behaviors often go unnoticed or misdiagnosed but can be addressed through vision therapy. Season 2 Episode 16: Show NotesPioneering medical technology firm, Vivid Vision, aims to do exactly that! Founder and CEO, James Blaha grew up suffering from amblyopia and strabismus and, as an adult, he decided to try and improve his own vision with technology. While building the first prototype of Vivid Vision, he gained stereoscopic vision and went on to start the company, which uses VR software to treat vision conditions such as binocular vision disorders, amblyopia, strabismus, and other conditions that you'll learn more about in today's episode. Listen in as James shares some insight into his early experiments with VR and 3D projection mapping, how the software has evolved, and what is next for Vivid Vision, including a direct-to-patient eye wellness app. We also come to understand his entrepreneurial journey, the value of startup accelerator programs, and the process of expanding into global markets, plus so much more! For an in-depth look at how Vivid Vision is changing the world of optometry using VR technology, make sure to tune in today! Key Points From This Episode:The story of how James set out with a desire to understand his own conditions.Insight into some of his early experiments with VR and 3D projection mapping. How Vivid Vision encourages the integration of information between both eyes using VR.The Indiegogo campaign that made James realize he had inadvertently started a business. The early days of Vivid Vision, from prototype to fundraising and commercialization. Why James believes that startup accelerator programs are worthwhile for founders.James outlines the process of creating a clinician-prescribed game-based treatment plan. How the proliferation of standalone VR headsets made at-home treatment possible.Characterizing the differences in regulatory frameworks between the US, Europe, and Asia. What drove James' decision to go international so early on and what kept him motivated.Find out what is next for Vivid Vision, including a direct-to-patient eye wellness app.The importance of treating your visions the way you treat other aspects of your health.Opportunities to build these kinds of vision treatments into other gameplay experiences.James shares his big-picture goals for Vivid Vision, including earlier detection of eye issues.Tweetables:“[Vivid Vision requires] the integration of information between [both] eyes. An eyepatch just covers up the good eye and forces you to see everything through the weak eye, which works with kids about 60 percent of the time and, with adults, a lot less than that.” — @jamesblaha [0:10:51]“VR was out for years before almost any medical system made any rules regarding it, so the biggest challenge is uncertainty and what the regulatory framework is going to be.” — @jamesblaha [0:25:02]“There are all these really specific use cases. More people want better vision and it doesn't involve an eye problem or eye disease at all. VR is a powerful tool to give people a way to measure and improve some of these specific visual skills.” — @jamesblaha [0:33:19]Links Mentioned in Today's EpisodeVivid VisionJames Blaha on LinkedInJames Blaha on TwitterSue Barry: Fixing My Gaze (TEDxPioneerValley)Pearly Chen on TwitterVIVE

In this week's episode, Brigitte interviews Dr. Sarah Lane, a Developmental Optometrist who specializes in working with children who struggle with the development of their visual skills and visual processing abilities.Dr. Lane offers Vision Therapy and Rehabilitation to children and adults in her community and is a creator of Meaningful Moves which are a collection of exercises designed for parents and caregivers to easily use with babies to help optimize the development of sensory and motor skills. She tells how Developmental Optometry found her when she started developing vision problems in 2nd grade. She struggled with reading and learning but she somehow made it through doing things differently from her classmates and sister and always making the high honor roll. When she got to optometry school, she had frequent headaches that resulted from switching from looking at a board far away to looking at her notes. She was diagnosed with a vision problem—problem with focusing and two-eye coordination—and was recommended to do vision therapy, which she had never heard of. She changed her career path to help others who had vision problems that could be helped with vision therapy. Along the way, she became a student of yoga and movement and as her vision improved with vision therapy, yoga, and movement, she started to ponder the question of how does the organization and movement of the body impact the visual system. She brings a lot of learning to her optometry session with her clients including MNRI, Feldenkrais Method, Pilate, and Yoga as she believes in the importance of having a holistic approach and putting a lot of different pieces together that over time allow us to create the shift we desire. She shares a success story of a boy in 7th grade who struggled to do what teachers wanted him to do exactly in the way they wanted. When he came to see her, she discovered that he was seeing double pretty much all the time and that double vision was related to the stress within his body. She brought in different modalities and body movement to balance the nervous system and now moving into high school, he is no longer seeing double and able to articulate what’s happening because of the tools he gained.Dr. Lane's goal is to teach a person how their visual system works and to teach them tools to continuously maintain organization within the visual system. She helps them to have an experience that gets them more connected with how their eyes and visual system works. She also talks about Meaningfull Moves, a program of exercises that parents can do with their children that set the foundation for sensory, motor, and visual development that include 5 areas of movement--Hand, Feet, Side to Side, Up and Down, and Upside Down. Finally, she gives us this advice, “Take a deep breath and pay attention to your child and pay attention to yourself. Take one step at a time to make sure that each movement or each step gets you to a better place mind, body, and spirit.”Enjoy this episode!Resources/Links:Meaningful Moveshttps://www.movewithyourbaby.com/Focus Center for Vision and Learninghttps://www.focusvisioncenter.com/Meaningful Moves Bookhttps://amzn.to/3pa5lUZFeldenkraishttps://feldenkrais.com/MNRIhttps://masgutovamethod.com/Mother's Guide Through Autism Private Facebook Grouphttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mothersguidethroughautismBMV Life Coachhttps://bmvlifecoach.com/

As Shakespeare said, "The eyes are the windows to the soul." Eye care should involve addressing the body, mind, and spirit. Traditional Chinese medicine refers to the eyes as the "pilot light." Our inner vision, how we view and interpret the world, affects our outer vision, how we see. Mind/body medicine depends on all of the individual factors effectively working together. Eyesight is affected by multiple factors: genetics, the food we eat, our environments, emotional and psychological health, and our belief systems. Healthy eyesight depends on our total well-being.

Vision problems since going low carb. [9:49] David says: I've been listening to your podcast and really enjoying it.  I went Keto/low carb about a year and a half ago.  Overall I feel much better and have lost about 40 pounds.  I'm 49 and have needed to wear reading glasses the last few years, but about six months after I switched to a low carb lifestyle my distance vision has been blurry as well.  It's tolerable, but some days are worse than others.  A few months ago my wife and I went on a cruise and although I committed myself to behaving it didn't last long.  by the end of the cruise, after cheating a little (most days I still ate steak, eggs, and vegetables) I woke up and my vision had improved significantly.  Obviously something in my diet, or rather something lacking from my diet, is causing this.  I don't want to start eating bread and chocolate desserts again, so I'm hoping you might have an idea of what I may need as a supplement or even better, a food that may be added,  Thanks in advance, and thanks for the show.   2. Why Alcohol? [13:55] Jamie says: Hi Robb, Not sure if you ever get my emails but, again, alcohol is a carcinogen so it’s not really a “perfect” wine for anyone who is attempting to avoid cancer.  Am I a zealot? Nope.  Just an observation that so many health experts are meticulous about diet except when alcohol is involved...and the alcohol industry loves it.   Have you ever considered why we embrace this substance that does so much harm?  I truly would like your insights as I really do like your work. Peace, Jay   3. Potassium [22:25] Lee says Okay, what's the deal with Potassium.  Recommended dosage is ~4700mg per day.   This is kinda hard to get from diet alone particularly a ketogenic one..   FDA limits potassium supplements to 100mg per dose, but a serving of a salt substitute containing potassium chloride has ~640 mg.   So piling on the salt substitute with  each meal is an easy way to get the recommended dosage.  However, there's a warning that exceeding 4700mg can cause Hyperkalemia (too high potassium levels in the blood) which has serious and potentially fatal side effects.   I've not been able to find much from the Googling about how what potassium intake levels actually lead to side effects ( one place mentioned > 18000mg).  The lack of good guidance seems to be telling.   Is it very dependent on overall heath, kidney function, weight? or do we just really not know?  So I guess my other questions are: 1. How did a hunter/gatherer get ~4700 mg of potassium ? 2. How careful do I need to be with my potassium chloride salt substitute (i.e. am I living on the edge with 5000 mg per day) ? Thanks, Lee   4. Muscle Cramps [28:37] Jackie says: Hi from Iowa.  I hope this finds you well. I have been keto for just over 3 months.  I have had the desired results of trimming away about 10lbs of body fat and the elimination of sugar cravings.  I am curious about what my optimal body weight is and what that looks like so i'm sticking with it and enjoying the journey.  I think I had that moment when i was fat adapted and i thought to myself- 'I am not craving things!'  I have had some carb refuels, usually because of social engagements and they usually leave me craving sugar for the next week. About a week ago I started to have leg cramps.  I am a 49 yo female, 5'10'' 173 lbs, I do resistive training for 30 minutes 3x/week-sets of 5 reps of push/pull/press/ squat and trap bar deadlift stuff.  One day/week i do 20 minutes of interval aerobic machine work out.  I walk each night for 15 minutes after dinner.  Sauna 1x/week for 15 minutes (I love this!) , I also teach 5 yoga classes/week- which means I prep for the class and certainly move through it but I don't 'do' the full class, I walk around and cue the sequence and give verbal cues for alignment.  I live in a small town and bike to work which is about a 6 minute bike ride.  On the weekends I like to go for a long walk (1 hour) with a friend. Beginning at the start of my keto journey and after reading about electrolytes I begin my morning with 1 or 2 teaspoons of Lite Salt, and lime juice in 10 oz of water.  I also use himalayan sea salt on everything-salads, brine meat with it.   I also take Mg supplementation one at breakfast, the other before bed.  I track just protein and get about 110-130 grams/day.  It has been a game changer to track something that I am trying to maximize.  Tracking carbs will make a person nuts.  i eat a lot of calories- I don't track calories but I keep up with my 16 yo son and partner on meals of fatty meats-pork, chicken or beef, loads of olive oil, ACV and himalayan salt on my daily big ass salads.   I meditate daily for about 10 minutes and do pranayama.  I am in bed by 9-9:30each night, and fall asleep in minutes. I drink about 2 cups of coffee in the morning with HWC, and 60 oz of water by 1pm, (I work out in the morning before 9) then about 40 oz in the afternoon/evening which usually includes 2 seltzers at night.  I wonder if i am dehydrated?  Or do I need to supplement Ca?  I suddenly have been getting late in the afternoon cramps, even in large muscle groups and feel super hungry, craving nuts and salty things and feeling tired again in the afternoons.  My sleep is also off, waking at 3 and difficult to fall back asleep. I have not had any lab work recently but plan to meet with my doctor to ask for a basic panal and return to D3/K2 supplementation which i usually don't take in the summer. I appreciate your time and any suggestions the two of you have for me would be greatly appreciated.  I love the podcast and the two of you.   5. Autophagy nerd out [34:16] Nates says: Hi Robb and Nicki, Love the show, and your keto masterclass was a game changer for me. I’ve switched up my morning to involve lots of dark roast coffee (regular and decaf) and sauna, per your recommendation. I’ll also do some heavy lifting in a fasted state (which I believe you might not entirely recommend). Can you nerd out a little on what is actually causing autophagy from sauna and dark roast coffee? And can one overdo it on the decaf coffee? Also, does a steam room effect/benefit us the same way a sauna would? I.e: autophagy and other cardiovascular benefits associated with sauna. Or should we stick with the dry heat of the sauna over a steam room. If you need it: I’m a 5ft 10in muscular 205lbs, 32 year old male in keto. Looking to shed some more weight off of gut and maintain muscle mass, as well as reap any benefits from sauna and coffee that I can. Thanks again.

My guest this week is Dr. Dan Fortenbacher, a board-certified fellow and clinical professor at the College of Optometry at Ferris State University specializing in developmental vision, Neuro-Optometry and vision therapy. He has developed models of innovation in the delivery of developmental, binocular and Neuro-Optometric vision rehabilitative care. In addition to his private practice, Dr. Fortenbacher is an adjunct faculty at Southern College of Optometry, where he is the program supervisor for the W.O.W Vision Therapy developmental vision and rehabilitation private practice residency. In this episode, Dr. Fortenbacher and I discuss how to detect vision problems in children (even if they have 20/20 vision) and when parents should prompt their doctor for further testing. Dr. Fortenbacher highlights the most common vision problems, how often they are overlooked by routine eye check-ups and their effects on academic success. Visual issues such as convergence insufficiency, developmental dyslexia, amblyopia or lazy-eye, strabismus or crossed-eye can be effectively treated and eradicated with proper visual therapy techniques. Learn more about Dr. Fortenbacher here.   How Vision Problems Can Easily Go Undetected Vision goes beyond being able to see clearly Having 20/20 vision does not mean that your eyes are working together When your eyes aren't working together there are a variety of possible outcomes Difficulty in sustained attention Unwantingly divided words or overlapping words when reading Clarity at near may be blurry or with overlapping images/words All of these outcomes can affect a child's performance, attention, and reading fluency Oftentimes if the parent does not specifically question their doctor about the child having a vision problem that affects reading, the proper testing can easily get overlooked   The Complexity of the Visual System BOTH eyes have to: Team, Track, and Focus.   The child then has to visually process and make sense of what they are seeing This is integral for optimal performance, reading, and attention skills in and outside of the classroom Integration - ties in all visual function motor skills with balance, listening, and thinking ALL of the above are developmental processes that are to occur naturally but many children struggle and experience delays   Emotional Consequences of Visual Conditions When the child is trying to apply themselves and they are unable to perform correctly, frustration ensues Children become overwhelmed when dealing with a vision issue and at times it can appear as a behavioral challenge They may have an attitude that shows they are unwilling and uninterested in trying   Common Visual Conditions Convergence Insufficiency - the inability to converge the eyes Occurs in 8-12% of the pediatric population The top binocular visual eye condition It can be effectively treated with vision therapy ‘Developmental Dyslexia' - JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) coined this term when researching the frequency of visual conditions such as convergence insufficiency and  oculomotor dysfunction A significant amount children with developmental dyslexia have binocular, accommodative and oculomotor dysfunction There are treatments to help these conditions Motion Sickness - vision therapy can help resolve this issue fairly quickly   Signs That Indicate A Possible Vision Condition Is your child struggling in reading and learning? Does your child resist or have difficulty with their homework? Do they avoid or dislike reading? General coordination difficulty? Have their vision evaluated beyond the routine eye health check An evaluation of binocular vision, tracking, focusing and visual processing   Assessment and Treatment Process First assessment includes testing: binocular vision, tracking, and focusing. If determined that there is a reason for concern, the child will need to return for further evaluation of their visual perceptual abilities where extensive testing is done on the following: Testing perception to visual memory and visual directionality to measure reversals Hand-eye coordination Reading tests to evaluate whether the struggle is a reading disability or a reading fluency issue Visually directed gross motor skills, vision imbalance, and visuall directed fine motor skills Diagnosis - much like rehabilitation in occupational therapy or speech-language therapy, vision therapy is therapeutic Fun activities with visual challenges are guided by a therapist once or twice a week Progress is measured and can take around 3-4 months to remediate the issue Patients with more complex issues, with autism or who have crossed eyes, lazy eyes, will take longer but can be treated effectively Vision therapy can also be applied to adults - age is not a barrier   Where to learn more about Dr. Fortenbacher Website: wowvision.net Twitter: @wowvision Facebook Wow Vision Therapy Youtube    Connect with Dr. Nicole Beurkens on... It's been reported that almost 45% of the US population suffers from one of four refractive errors in vision, the most common of which is called presbyopia, an age-related condition that decreases a person's ability to focus on objects in front of them. To varying degrees, this problem affects every single person who is over the age of 35 and only progresses with time. Until now, this problem has remained entirely unaddressed by the scientific community. Tridib Ghosh is the CEO, director, and co-founder of Sharp Eyes, a company that is creating programmable liquid lenses which have the ability to correct presbyopia by changing their curvature in direct accordance with an object that's within the user's gaze. The technology uses an eye tracking system that calculates the exact distance between an object and the user and changes shape accordingly in order to bring that object into complete focus for the user. The change occurs within a fraction of a second so that the user never feels like they're losing eye power. Furthermore, the lenses can be updated by programming new data as it relates to the progressive deterioration of the user's vision over time. As it turns out, these lenses will also address the other refractive errors in vision-myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. The team at Sharp Eyes is preparing to test their prototype on actual patients in order to see what further optimizations might be needed before launching the first-generation product. Tune in for the details.

Geek Counterpoint -- Your antidote to soundbite science!

The White House just released its proposed 2007 budget for NASA, and it seems the administration has an interesting perspective on both science and its own "Vision for Space Exploration" (VSE). While the Bush administration isn't reducing anything it's asking NASA to do as part of VSE, the White House is increasingly reluctant to actually provide money for any of it. As a result, since the space shuttle continues to overrun every "official" estimate ever made of its future costs, NASA's space science program will now be drained of at least $2 billion over the next five years in an attempt to keep shuttles flying and the VSE moving forward. In this episode, I give you all the gory details, along with a bit of historical perspective.
