This is Episode 53 of the Consortium Podcast, an academic audio blog of Kepler Education. In this episode, George Harrell discusses our classical inheritance and what it means to receive it. He explains how we have all received an intellectual and cultural inheritance; most of us in North America have received, in large part, a classical Christian inheritance whether we realize it or not. Even when attempting to reject the inheritance, it is confirmation that we have received something to reject. Listen in as George brilliantly unpacks the deeper goodness of inheriting our Western heritage. George is a classical educator and the executive director of the George Buchanan Forum. He grew up in the foothills of northern Idaho, where he immersed himself in the classics, both old and new, as well as the historical worlds that created them. He graduated with an MA in Trinitarian Theology and Letters from New Saint Andrews College in 2013. Since then he has developed and taught online high school courses in the humanities, in addition to writing and publicly lecturing on these topics. This fall, George is teaching American History, Biblical Narrative and Imagery, and Unlocking Middle-earth: How to Read Like Tolkien at Kepler Education.

In this engaging episode, we explore the intricate and profound world of Trinitarian theology with theologian Adonis Vidu. Join us as we explore the key themes and arguments from his latest book, The Same God Who Works All Things: Inseparable Operations in Trinitarian Theology (Eerdmans). Vidu passionately defends the doctrine of inseparable operations, which asserts that all actions of the Trinity are unified and indivisible. Through this doctrine, we gain a deeper understanding of the unity and distinct roles of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Throughout our conversation, Vidu traces the development, challenges, and implications of inseparable operations from biblical foundations and patristic contributions to contemporary theological debates. We address various objections, particularly concerning the incarnation and atonement, and demonstrate how this doctrine can coherently explain complex theological concepts while preserving the unity and distinction within the Trinity. Adonis Vidu serves as Andrew Mutch Distinguished Professor of Theology at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, where his research and teaching focus on the intersections of historical and contemporary theological thought. Vidu holds a Ph.D. in Theology and Religious Studies from King's College London, and he has authored several influential works, including Atonement, Law, and Justice: The Cross in Historical and Cultural Contexts and the subject of this conversation, The Same God Who Works All Things: Inseparable Operations in Trinitarian Theology. Watch or listen to gain invaluable insights from one of today's leading theological minds as we explore the profound depths of Trinitarian theology and its relevance for contemporary Christian life and thought. Whether you're a seasoned theologian or simply curious about the intricacies of faith, this episode promises to be both enlightening and thought-provoking.

On September 1, 2022, Lane Tipton fielded questions on his book, The Trinitarian Theology of Cornelius Van Til. Cornelius Van Til (1895–1987) offered a confessionally Reformed doctrine of the Creator-creature relation that stands out as distinct in contrast to both traditional Roman Catholic and contemporary Barthian alternatives. His Trinitarian theology of the Creator-creature relation supplied a pioneering enrichment of Reformed theology in the traditions of Old Princeton and Old Amsterdam. In the book, Lane G. Tipton interprets Van Til in his own historical and polemical context and demonstrates how the immutably dynamic life of the self-contained Trinity bears upon God's relation to Adam in the work of creation, the act of special providence in covenant, and the person and eternal Son in the event of incarnation. Tipton argues that Van Til's Trinitarian theology deepens confessionally Reformed Trinitarianism and federalism in contrast to medieval Thomistic and modern Barthian theological alternatives. In a period marked by theological decline, he strives to clarify and extend confessional Reformed Trinitarian and federal theology in the service of the church's union and communion with the immutable person of the crucified and ascended Christ of Scripture.

Carlton Wynne, Lane Tipton, and Camden Bucey turn to pp. 48–54 of Cornelius Van Til's The Defense of the Faith to discuss the Christian theory of knowledge. In this section, Van Til speaks of the relationship between a theory of reality and the theory of knowledge and how for orthodox Christians, the absolute God of Scripture is identical with his knowledge while finite creatures are fundamentally dependent upon him. We also announce the arrival of Lane Tipton's book, The Trinitarian Theology of Cornelius Van Til.

Father Anthony Sciarappa is spending the week in Texas with Taylor for vacation & a retreat they're going on together. They talk about how Taylor was berated for a grammatical error on last week's show & some highlights from Taylor's youth conference. Then, they dare to tread the murky waters of Trinitarian theology. The Trinity is a mystery and Taylor has been scared to teach about it for years for many reasons. But he had to give a talk on it recently so he learned a lot but still has questions. Father Anthony explains how he has eluded heresy in his Trinitarian preaching. Finally, they discuss the recent reversal of Roe V. Wade and how the Church has responded. They discuss hope(and the lack of it) and share how they've been feeling since the decision was released. We hope you enjoy this week's episode! John Crowder pulls from the different streams of the church to talk about Christilogical Trinitarian theology, grace, union, contemplative practice, intimacy, and mystical Christianity. John and Jason dive into the Cross, Western atonement theories, and the religious industry built upon separation; how Jesus is healing the human race. John describes a relationship with a person, Christ. He invites us to embrace mystery so we might discover that God looks like Jesus. QUOTES “People are grabbing the Trinitarian Father, this gospel message…” “I saw the connection between the church mystics and post-Azusa Street Pentecostalism, it was the presence orientation that connected these streams.” “We've pulled from a lot of different streams; I could see baby Jesus in the bathwater.” “I think there is a merger happening that we got to get a hold of, a Christological, Trinitarian theology that is contemplative in its experience and employment.” “The biggest problem in the church is separation thinking, between you and Jesus, and between Jesus and His Father” “This idea that the Father is turning his back on the Son, that Jesus is the whipping boy for the Father's wrath, this is preached as the gospel, an atonement theory, a twisted one at that, being preached as the gospel in the western church. These atonement theories are demonic in nature. (And) There's almost no grid for what the cross means outside that…” “What did not happen on the cross, which is a complete fabrication, a demonic fairy tale, the Trinity was not imploding on Itself…Jesus was healing the human race…” “There have always been pluralities in the Godhead and He has always desired family” “Religion builds an industry on the concept of separation.”

The Trinity is difficult to understand. As pastors and teachers try to break down the concept in order to teach, analogies are often deployed. Some liken the Trinity to a three-leaf clover, others to the three possible states of waters (solid, liquid, gas). But are these analogies helpful? Do they reflect the God of Scripture? In this episode, Pastors Brandon and Zac show that all human analogies actually teach an ancient Trinitarian heresy rather than the God of the Bible. This being the case, human analogies ought to be rejected.  For more information, see:  Athanasian Creed Belgic Confession, Art 8-9 Heidelberg Catechism, Q. 25 The Trinity: An Introduction by Scott Swain The Essential Trinity: New Testament Foundations and Practical Relevance ed. by Brandon Crowe and Carl Trueman The Holy Trinity: In Scripture, History, Theology, and Worship by Robert Letham  Van Til's Trinitarian Theology by Lane Tipton

This is the first in a series of episodes on the story of God. We've talked about seeing reality as a story, we've talked about Apocalypse or spiritual revelation as to the nature of that story, and in our Endgame episode we talked about what it's like at the end of the story. But exactly what story is it that we're in? Where does it begin and how did we get here?We argue that the place to begin is with God. In doing so we talk at length about the doctrine of the Holy Trinity, we spend some time discussing the hundreds of years the early Church spent developing this doctrine, we discuss what it means practically in our daily lives that God is a Trinitarian God, and we end with a practice that I think you will find helpful in restoring your relationship with the persons of the Trinity. We are invited not only to form our minds around the doctrine of the Trinity but to encounter the Trinity in an immediate and personal way.You can find links and more show notes at https://mountvigil.org/mount-vigil-podcast-episode-5/
