In 2001, Steven Harper made the decision to leave the corporate world after working for several fortune 500 companies. He chose to start his own commercial cleaning company, Spectrum Building Services of America. His goal was to build a company where he could leave his mark, instill his core values, and achieve personal and professional balance. While working in the corporate world, he endured 60 to 70-hour work weeks and did not take a vacation for 10 years. He realized that to achieve his goals, he needed to grow not only as a leader but also by acquiring new customers and providing career opportunities for employees. Recognizing that flexibility was crucial, he understood that he had to spend his time working on the business, not just in the business. Steven credits his employees, continual growth as a leader, and flexibility for the company's continual growth. In 2023, he realized they needed to spend time focusing on their branding effort. The epiphany he had was understanding his company's “why.” His realization was that companies don't buy from customers because they do a good job; they buy from them because they buy into why they're doing what they're doing. They bought into their “why.” From this, his company was able to create their mission. One of the biggest takeaways was being able to attract the right customers through digital marketing and account-based marketing. But most importantly, they want to align themselves with companies that share their values. The mission they came up with is to be “caretakers and stewards, restoring and enriching spaces so businesses can thrive.”

Having played a leading role in the Joseph Smith Papers project, the Saints project, and the Wilford Woodruff Papers project (amongst many others), Steven is more qualified than most to answer questions about the church's history and how learning about it can be a blessing. I wanted to talk to Steven about how the information and clickbait era is presenting a challenge to those who grow concerned about elements of church history, Steven has read it all and remains faithful: why and how? His insights and advice are priceless for growing your faith and coming to know the truth when learning about the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Some highlights from this episode are what we misunderstand about Joseph Smith, why we don't hear much about Wilford Woodruff, and what it means to be a 'seeker' of truth. Follow For All The Saints on social media and sign up to the newsletter for updates and inspiring weekly messages:For All The Saints episodes are released every Monday on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts and more. If you have any suggestions for topics or guests, connect with Ben & Sean via hello@forallthesaints.org

This East St. Louis native came to Champaign to find the help he desperately needed. Being raised in a bar and mimicking the behavior around him combined with childhood molestation and addiction didn't set Steven up for success. Listen to this mild mannered dad to two sons and a daughter (that he until recently thought was his biological child) explain the tattered tapestry that created the fabric of his life today. Regardless of the mess that was his childhood, teens, 20s and even 30s, Steven has worked hard to presently give back to others and create a safe place to raise his two sons. Fighting passionately to prove his worth and value as a citizen and dad, Steven has had to navigate the court system to legally get and keep his sons under his roof in Urbana. Letting go of childhood trauma, blaming himself for his father's death and absorbing the resources around him to recover from drugs and alcohol allowed him to clean up his act. Losing both parents to drug and alcohol abuse, going to jail, experiencing homelessness and having a girlfriend strip to keep bad habits afloat is just the beginning of this story with a happy ending. Thank you so much for listening! In this episode, Professor Steven Harper, a professor of Church history and doctrine, explains his research on the law of consecration. He articulates the revealed principles of the doctrine (rather than the “folk doctrine” surrounding it)—and helps listeners understand why the law of consecration is the ultimate expression of discipleship for Latter-day Saints.

What even is the Law of Consecration?! Well it's a covenant that members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints make during the temple endowment ceremony, but what actually is it? We go through a deep dive of the Law of Consecration, discuss a bit of its history, and pontificate about it's impact and possible future use in Mormon culture today. After that we review Gate to Women's Country by Sheri S. Tepper, a wonderful dystopian fantasy novel with some hard-hitting social commentary we interpret through a Mormon lens. We round out the episode by congratulating LeVar Burton receiving long-deserved recognition. Patrons: we debrief/deconstruct the recent debate between Bryce and a certain litigious individual. Most of us have the same perception of consecration that Steven Harper had when he went to the temple for the first time: The Lord “revealed the law of consecration to the early Saints. They couldn't live it, so the Lord revoked the higher law, gave the lower law of tithing, and would someday give the higher law again.” But if someone had asked him how he knew that, he says he wouldn't have had an answer. Now after studying the topic for years, Harper has a different understanding of what consecration is and on this week's episode he shares the answers he's found with us.  2:18- “A Foreign Place" 6:10- Preparing For The Temple 11:14- A Three-Legged Stool 20:15- The Oversimplification of History 23:50- Edward Partridge  30:30- Caring for the Poor 38:52- Consecration In All Seasons 45:08- Membership Mindset Vs. Consecration Approach 50:40- What Does It Mean To Be All In the Gospel of Jesus Christ?  “The Lord does not care about the amount of money that we consecrate. That is not the measurement but He does ask for all—all their heart, all their might, all their mind, all their strength, all their soul. But in return for that, remember that He gives all." The truth claims members of the Church of Jesus Christ make rely heavily upon the veracity of the claims made by Joseph Smith. Joseph Smith’s First Vision is often the first story we tell in the narrative of the Restoration.  But that was not always the case.  It took about 50 years for the First Vision to become solidified as a foundational story of the Church. In this episode, BYU professor Steven Harper discusses his landmark research publication about how the First Vision was remembered and interpreted by Joseph Smith, and why thoughtfully doing the same today is essential for Latter-day Saints.  Click here to get Professor Harper’s book, or here or to read a published essay on the subject. Ep 262 Guest: Mario Canseco Headline: Election Crystal Ball   The environment was supposed to dominate the 2019 election in Canada. However, long before the news of the Prime Minister in brownface broke, pollster Mario Canseco was saying he doubts climate will dominate. In fact, he says it is very difficult to say that one issue will resonate across the country. In Quebec and BC, yes, the environment is high on the agenda. In Alberta, resistance to climate policies top the polls. Ontario, the Maritimes and the Prairies all have different top issues.   Who do you see as your Prime Minister? This may be the polarizing question that will make people rally behind one leader or the other. The current prime minister has been battered and bruised by environmental decisions that are at odds with one another. On one hand, he wants to build a pipeline; on the other, he wants to stop the use of fossil fuels. He’s twice been found to have acted outside the ethics of the office he holds and still, he probably stands the best chance of calling Sussex Drive home for the next four years.   The challenge for voters is they don’t hate him the way they despised Steven Harper and they don’t love anyone else.   We invited Mario Canseco to join us for a Conversation That Matters about the myriad issues in play for the federal election in Canada and why picking a winner is becoming harder and harder.   Conversations That Matter is a partner program for the Center for Dialogue at Simon Fraser University. On today's episode of Join Up Dots as normal for a Friday show, David Ralph answers a couple of questions from listeners across the world, and even brings back the words greatest competition – The Gargle Game. Lets start however with a rating and review on Itunes which then lead me to connect with the chap to say thank you, and gain some advice of my own. This is from an English guy called Steven Harper, who is a musician, teacher and opera singer in the UK. “Thanks David for all the work that you have put into the podcast. I really appreciate it, it has been a kick up the bum that was needed to get me out of a complacent slump. My job is teaching singing and piano and i never considered that my students would be taking my work one day and for less money. Now I am trying to become Steven Harper music teacher and and not just an anonymous teacher. I have listened to all 1000 plus podcast and looking forward to the next 100.” Now what Steven is doing there is talking 100% about gaining a personal brand. He is building celebrity into his work, so people see him as more than the normal and subsequently will seek him out to gain tuition and be accepting of higher prices. This takes a focused approach in regards to putting more of himself out into the world, through visuals, youtube channels, podcasts and live videos of his students transformations. People don't want to play the piano, they actually want to see people who are playing sexy tunes and becoming like them. That is the real transformation that makes a business fly, as the world wants the outcomes as quickly as possible. Now the second question came from a listener in Belgium, by the name of Henry Madsen, who asked “David, I have heard you say on previous shows that 95% of businesses fail within the first five years. What do you think is the reason for this? And any suggestions as to what you would advise myself in trying to start my own business…..kind regards Henry Madsen” The answer to this is quite simple as you will hear on today's show. A business fails due to not selling another of their products, and this comes down to two main reasons. Either they aren't getting the traffic, or even worse they build a product that nobody wants it. Enjoy and I hope to hear from everyone who loves this episode and has ideas of starting their own business.

Steven Harper points out that one of things the Church History Department's Revelations in Context series was designed to do was to encourage study of the history and doctrine of the LDS Church in order to move members past folk doctrines. One of these misunderstandings that has developed over time is the relationship between the law of consecration and tithing. The law of the Lord is given in D&C 42, and it is to love God and love one’s neighbor. All are encouraged to give of their time and temporal means to relieve the suffering of others. It is not a law governing ownership but rather one that asks us what we are willing to do with what we have. The law is also about agency, accountability, and stewardship. Tithing didn't replace the law of consecration; it is simply one way in which it is practiced. The law is eternal and does not change but the way followers practice it does. In the early days of the LDS Church, any freewill offering was considered tithing. This has changed over time. How we consecrate has also changed. Listen in on this fascinating discussion between Steven C. On Wednesday, June 11, the Prime Minister of Canada, Steven Harper, issued an "apology" to the entire Native population of Canada for the sexual and physical abuses they suffered in "residential schools" across Canada. But the Prime Minister's action is being called a criminal cover-up by some. There is irrefutable evidence of systematic mass-murder of more than 50,000 native children imprisoned in the schools. More than half of the children imprisoned in the schools never made it home alive. The schools were run by Catholic and Protestant ministers, priests and nuns, and funded by the taxpayers of Canada. The Churches and Government refuse to admit the genocide.Former United Church Minister Kevin Annett is interviewed by Amanda Bellerby for the program Flashpoints on KPFA Radio (6/18/08), regarding his documentary film titled "Unrepentant" which exposes the Christian Church-led genocide in Canada from the 1870s to the 1990s.
