The Prophet Joseph Smith taught “that the book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the key stone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book.” But what exactly are precepts? And how are those recorded in an ancient record relevant to our lives today? In this episode Church history and doctrine professor Dr. Maclane Heward discusses ways to identify key precepts in the Book of Mormon and intentionally incorporated them into our lives. He examines a micro approach (like verse-by-verse analysis) and a macro approach (such as examining larger sections or entire books for overarching themes) for uncovering and understanding precepts. Further, he shares how applying such precepts can lead to personal growth, increased spiritual understanding, and a deeper sense of purpose and direction. By studying and applying the precepts found in the Book of Mormon, we can strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ and develop a closer relationship with him. Dr. Bill Heward was gracious enough to return to the podcast in Session 260. In this episode, we talked about a handful of different topics, including how to respond to criticisms of reinforcement practices, and the international dissemination of the excellent book, Let's Make a Contract, which he coauthored with Dr. Jill Dardig. However, we spent the majority of the time discussing Bill's extensive knowledge of whole-group responding practices in classroom settings. Specifically, we talk about how he first learned about this practice, why he wanted to study it, how he and his colleagues carried out one of his better known studies on the topic (Lambert et al., 2006), and lots more. Along the way, Bill offered lots of great advice for practitioners who are interested in trying out these low-tech/high-impact strategies. During the conversation, Bill mentioned a talk that I gave at the 2023 BABAT conference, and in the podcast I mentioned that my colleagues and I created an online course based on that presentation. At the time of the interview with Bill, the course was not yet available. However, I'm happy to report that it is out now. Guest preacher Bishop Dag Heward-Mills from Ghana delivers this powerful message about four spiritual appointments for every Christian. Losing is part of following Christ— Jesus said “whoever loses his life for My sake shall find it”(Mt 16:25). Suffering is part of the Christian's calling; tribulation is a door through which we enter the Kingdom of God. Sacrificing is an inherent part of Christianity; we are to present our bodies a living sacrifice (Rom 12:1). Dying to self, taking up one's cross is a daily practice for the Christian. It is through these four appointments that a Christian, having lost, suffered and died, bears fruit for God. Be encouraged by this word to pay the price for God.
Guest preacher from Ghana, Bishop Dag Heward-Mills cautions against the dangerous practice of forgetting the good that has been done to you. Some Christians forget God when they prosper—they become proud and take credit for their blessings instead of remembering and thanking God. The unrighteousness who forget God and provoke Him (Deut 9:7). Three key things that make people unfruitful are found in 2 Pet 1:9—blindness (not seeing that millions need Jesus), shortsightedness (not having far-sightedness) and forgetting one's salvation. Let this message encourage you to catch the vision to reach out to the lost and not be barren but fruitful for the Lord.

Shhh! I'm not supposed to be working this week... However, I am somewhat of a traditionalist, and as such obligated to publish the annual Year in Review show with my friends at ABA Inside Track. So here's a really quick rundown. As usual, we reviewed the passings of several behavior analysts in 2023. This is always sad, but at the same time, we tried to highlight the achievements and contributions of the behavior analysts we talked about. We also recognize that Behavior Analysis, with over 60 thousand BCBAs and BCBA-Ds, is a rapidly growing field, and with these larger numbers comes the increased probability of us missing someone in this process, and we apologize if we left anyone out as a consequence of this. But the Year in Review is not just for remembering the passing of fellow Behavior Analysts. We discussed a few things happening in the field, some updates to our podcasts that we've made and are continuing to make, and talked about the book chapter we collaborated on in the edited text, Disseminating Behavioral Research (note: Amazon Associate link). George invited outdoor writers, Colton and David to camp to experience mallards in the flooded Timber! The mission was to collect data and content on the brand new SBE 3 28 gauge. The discussion revolves around the culture of duck camp and leads into stories and memories that were just created in the woods. The guns did their job without a hitch and the group experienced mallard ducks in their majesty! We loved having all of the guys at camp in Arkansas and can't wait to share everything we were able to accomplish!
