In this episode, Jeannette talks to Jamie York. A property investor, speaker, and entrepreneur. He is the co-owner of Aspire Property Group which includes a number of property-based companies including We Sell BMV. Jamie speaks about what drives him. How his ambitions have grown as he has met each of his goals, for example paying for African kids to go through school has turned into wanting to build schools to help more kids. Jamie explains how he builds and maintains momentum, quickly recognises opportunities and uses them to the full. He and Jeannette also discuss money mindset, the power of compounding, KEY TAKEAWAYS Get yourself educated. Jamie has invested £100,00+ in doing this, but he has made that back many, many times. Personal development exposes what is available to you. That makes you grow. It is important to appreciate what you have at the same time as wanting more. For Jamie, having a purpose is what makes him happy. Every person is a conduit of energy and money. Earning more money means you can help more people. You are the average of the five people that you surround yourself with. We all naturally act like those we associate with. Raise your standards. Whatever you set your bar at is what you will get back. When things go wrong, don´t get upset. Just accept it has happened and add something to the process to make sure it does not happen again. Every low point is an opportunity to learn, refocus and experience big highs, as a result. Don't underestimate the power of compounding. It works in all areas of your life. Not just in money related matters. Be self-aware of who you are. Then constantly act upon it no matter what external factors are thrown at you. BEST MOMENTS ‘You have to have a growth mindset.' ‘What you can achieve in life is genuinely unlimited.' ‘There is no such thing as a self-made millionaire. The money I make now is as a result of the incredible team I surround myself with.' ‘A huge percentage of your learning comes from your losses.' This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. It's never too late to be BRAVE and BOLD and unlock your inner BRILLIANCE. He is the co-owner of Aspire Property Group which includes a number of property-based companies including We Sell BMV, one of the largest deal sourcing companies in the UK. Jamie grew up in Kent and after some success in trading, purchased his first property at 19 years old with his now business partner: Dan Buchan. With little property experience, his first property purchase wasn't smooth sailing, and Jamie quickly realised he needed to get educated. After growing his property knowledge, Jamie then moved to Yorkshire and set up a Rent-to-Rent company, selling the company after about 4 years, and then forming Aspire Property Group which he has grown over the past 10 years to what it is today. A millionaire at 24 years old, Jamie has grown his property portfolio, and continues to invest and now trains others to enable them to have a firm understanding not only of business and property but also of the mindset that goes alongside being an entrepreneur. Homestead Brings a Locally-Sourced Neighborhood Market to Solana Beach

Welcome back to Happy Half Hour! This week we have two special guests, Jamie and Marie Brawn, owners of Homestead Solana Beach. The business—which served locally-sourced gluten free, vegetarian, and vegan food—was inspired by the duo's own home cooking for their sons who both have food allergies. But like many, the pandemic forced them to switch gears; and the idea was born to turn Homestead from an eatery to a neighborhood market. Jamie and Marie were running both their catering company and Homestead before the pandemic hit. When they shut down the catering company, Homestead was forced to float on its own and adapt to a changing landscape. While food and drinks are still offered, the neighborhood market they launched has become the heart of the business, stocking the shelves with locally sourced and unique goods. For Jamie and Marie, “locally sourced” doesn't just mean from the San Diego area, but any small business that has their own story. This philosophy has opened the doors to bringing in items like imported gluten-free pasta from Italy and fresh seafood sourced just outside of Jamie's hometown in Maine and shipped overnight, never frozen. Part of Homestead's goal is to bring dining experiences you would typically only find in Little Italy or North Park to Solana Beach. To fill their niche in the community, all the items on the shelves at Homestead are a little different than what you would find in the surrounding stores. In addition to those small-batch food products, they also serve food and drinks on the patio, and are preparing to launch a raw seafood bar. Jamie and Marie are looking for more people to help bring the craft food scene to Solana Beach. With a few more restaurants, Jamie and Marie believe Solana Beach will be well on its way to providing an experience like in Little Italy, where you can find somewhere great to eat just by walking around the neighborhood In Hot Plates, Stone Brewing World Bistro and Gardens welcomes Chef Rich Sweeney to lead the Liberty Station location and Chef Israel Ortiz to take charge of the flagship in Escondido. Verbena Kitchen, a new restaurant by Chef Ronnie Shwandt featuring a seasonal menu, is opening in North Park at the end of June. Vegan, Chicago-style hot dog pop up Chicago Not Dogs is opening a brick and mortar in the former location of The Modern Vegan this summer. Pacific Hotel opened their second restaurant called High Low and serves up fun dishes like squash blossom breakfast enchiladas and buttermilk and Indio corn pancakes. Best Restaurant voting has just started and will continue until June 15th, make sure to check out the results in September! In Two People for Takeout/Two People for $50, Jamie and Marie's favorite takeout spot during the pandemic has been Himilayan Kitchen in Encinitas for their chicken tikka masala and a triple order of naan. Troy's quest for the best donuts in San Diego brought him to Dark Horse Coffee Roasters which serves an Earl Grey vegan donut from Skinny Donuts with frosting that tastes exactly like Fruit Loops. The pozole soup at Brother's Mexican Restaurant is David's pick for the week. My recommendation is to check out Shawarma Station in OB for their rib-eye beef fries. Thank you for listening! We are joined by Jamie and Skylar from Explorcation on this episode of the podcast.  They have a fantastic blog and vlog on YouTube.  They share a ton of advice for staying healthy and well when you are traveling.    Jamie and Skylar are a couple who loves to travel, explore new places, and try new experiences. Many of their travels include adventures like hiking to secluded beaches, jumping off of waterfalls, paddling to beautiful destinations, and learning to rock climb.   They also travel to relax and include videos from cruising and spending time on beaches. They live in Florida and travel as often as they can while still working full time.  In this episode, Jamie and Skylar share their top tips for staying healthy and well while traveling and many planning and preparation tips and resources.  Make sure to stay tuned until the very end to hear their favorite three places they have visited.    Show Notes: [01:39] They both work full-time, but they love being active as much as possible. [01:52] They both grew up in the midwest and had limited opportunities to travel. They moved to Florida to travel more often and live a more active lifestyle.   [02:31] Explorcation started four years ago when they went on a cruise to the Virgin Islands.  They came back from that trip with so much video footage and decided to start the YouTube channel as a way to document their travels for themselves.   [03:53] They hope to inspire other people to visit new places, try new things, and live a healthier and more adventurous lifestyle.     [05:01] Some days it is a struggle to balance it all, but it really helps to have a second person to get input and help with the process.   [05:57] Learning to set time boundaries and sticking to them have really been key to working full-time and growing Explorcation.   [07:35] Their relationship has grown from working on the blog and vlog together.   [10:08] They were fortunate to have a big trip right before COVID hit.  They still have footage they are sharing and working on from that trip.   [11:11] They were also lucky not to have any trips interrupted by COVID because they didn’t have any additional trips planned for that time.   [13:19] They encourage their viewers to find healthy activities they enjoy, make them feel good, and add joy to their lives.   [13:31] First you have to make the decision to keep healthy habits while you are traveling.  That is the first challenge.   [14:43]  They found themselves not feeling well for several days after returning from trips after enjoying too many drinks, food, and sun.   [16:29] They still enjoy these amenities, but only in moderation.  [17:15] They realized that the best stress reliever for them was just to get out and do what they loved in nature and be adventurous.   [17:37] Returning with more energy and less stress was definitely a big motivator for them. Jamie had a second motivator and that was her health.    [19:01] For Jamie adopting a healthier lifestyle and being more active is what she needed to take back her life.  She started by eating more fresh fruits and vegetables and taking vitamins.   [20:11] The one thing that has contributed to their health and happiness has been finding the activities that they both enjoy.   [21:35] When they moved to Florida they started to find active hobbies that they both enjoyed doing together like paddleboarding. [23:11] They both also enjoy rock climbing.  They got into rock climbing because they found a Groupon online.   [25:15] They started rock climbing indoors and climbed for over a year before they thought about outdoor rock climbing.  Their first outdoor rock climbing trip was to Asheville, North Carolina.  [27:09] Their rock climbing trips were only day trips.  Some destinations do offer multiple-day backpacking trips.   [28:17] They have also developed a love for hiking.  They really appreciate the hills and mountains.   [29:12] They love to hike to secluded beaches.  They find these beaches by doing research and watching other vlogs.   [32:01] They usually take backpacks.  They have one backpack with essentials and a cooler backpack for cool drinks.   [34:01]  It is important to do the research to find out what exactly can you do that is something that you are interested in.     [36:30] On cruises you can use the excursions that the cruise ship provides or find your own.   [37:03] You know that if you book your excursions through the cruise ship they are not going to leave you.  If you are doing excursions on your own research them ahead of time and make sure they are legit.  They suggest having a back-up plan just in case you are left behind.   [38:14] When they are planning and preparing for trips they watch a ton of travel vlogs, check Trip Advisor, read blogs, travel magazines, and many online resources.    [39:54] Their top tip staying healthy while traveling is to stay as active as possible.  They find activities that they both enjoy and plan their trips around those activities.   [41:56] When you are traveling to a destination where you have the option to prepare your own food they highly recommend visiting the local market and local produce stands.   [42:51] They recommend booking a hotel with a gym or a swimming pool to increase your options for physical activity.  You can book a cruise that has several activities aboard.   [44:05] For travel or active days it is important to pack healthy snacks and stay hydrated. You can bring an empty water bottle through airport security and fill it up once you get to the terminal.   [45:22] The last tip for when you actually reach your destination is to avoid foods that have a negative impact on your health.  If you put the effort in you can almost always find healthy produce.  If you have the opportunity to cook your own meals they highly recommend it.  Many cruise ships offer healthier options.   [47:41] Skylar’s top 3 places he has visited are Costa Rica, St. Lucia, and Joshua Tree Park.   [49:02] Jamie’s top 3 places she has visited are Costa Rica, St. Lucia, and Puerto Rico.     Links and Resources: Fly with Chris and Di on Facebook Fly with Chris and Di on Twitter Fly with Chris and Di on Instagram Fly with Chris and Di on Pinterest Explorcation Blog Explorcation on YouTube Explorcation on Twitter Explorcation on Instagram   For pictures, tips and more, be sure to check out our Fly with Chris and Di Facebook page and signup to download a copy of The Best City for You. This episode is with soon to be black belt wielding, wedding singer Jamie Reeves from The Best Singing Waiters.  So,who is Jamie? Jamie started out as a DJ when he was just 16 years old and travelled around Europe at the age of 20 as a singer. After establishing himself as a Robbie Williams tribute act, he set up his own entertainment agency and started managing various different tribute acts including Take That, Meatloaf and Amy Winehouse. Jamies’ entertainment agency was primarily aimed at the wedding market, and that is where the idea for “’The Singing Waiters’ come along.   Jamie is also a keen singer songwriter and has even had his own top ten hit on itunes. He has written and worked with people whose credits include Beyonce, Take That and Sir Paul McCartney.  You might also have seen Jamie in several episodes of Eastenders, riding a moped through Albert Square. But not if you blinked… What is a singing waiter? Everybody has probably been to a wedding, corporate event, birthday etc and typically you will have an idea of how the day will run.  This is where The Best Singing Waiters come in, they take the ordinary and make it more extraordinary. After dessert has been served, they spring into action, suddenly breaking with their “waiter” character, and bursting out into song, getting everyone singing along and essentially break every type of rule you can think of when it comes to party etiquette. They literally get the party started!  The “reveal” is something that you simply have to see to believe (They have more than 900 videos on their YouTube channel), and it’s this magic moment that wedding guests talk about for years to come. What does an Ambitious Lifestyle Business look like for Jamie? Jamie is a married proud dad of three, so for him it’s all about being with the family. Two of the three children are sports minded and love football, karate and dance and the two-and-a-half-year-old is just into everything!!   For Jamie, working from home is a must – he has no desire to have an office (his office at home does look pretty smart though – check it out in the video!), however that doesn’t mean he is a one man band – Jamie has a team of staff, and has built robust systems and processes which enable him to have the freedom to work from home.   He also still does some gigs, performing between six and ten gigs per year. Clearly, Jamie’s company do a LOT more gigs than that – more like 200 a year. But again, Jamie has no desire to be racing up and down the motorways of Britain on a daily basis, doing back-to-back weddings, and spending every weekend away from his family.   How did Jamie design his business to deliver his ambitious lifestyle business? As with most guests on the ALB podcast, it was a bit of design, and a bit of luck!  As a literal one-man-band, Jamie started to get more and more offers of gigs, that with the best will in the world he simply couldn’t keep up with, so he brought on some singers to lighten the load.  Before he knew it, that turned into a team of six singers.  Similar to how Jon Monks told us back in ALB44 that he was “the conductor of the orchestra”, Jamie directs his team, and designs the systems and processes from his home office, so that multiple weddings can all happen at the same time, at opposite ends of the country, and all whilst Jamie is sat at a football match with his family.  Whilst he did reference Jon Monk’s “conductor of the orchestra” comment though, Jamie explained that his version was a bit more like “waving your arms about and blagging it!”  Jamie firmly believes that the key to running any business is down to the processes and systems that are in place. (If you want to go deep on systems and processes, have another listen to ALB14, where we look at the story of Ray Kroc, and McDonalds, through the lens of the movie The Founder.  For Jamie, admin was the first to go – as a creative person, this was something he just did not enjoy, so he was very quick to get someone else doing the paperwork.  Every single thing that he does within the business is fully documented, so that a team member can follow the exact processes to the letter.  Jamie also likes to record videos of himself on zoom performing key tasks and pop it into a shared dropbox folder, so it is accessible to all of his team, and they can all see visually, exactly what Jamie wants to happen – every time. Is Jamie a Routine Machine?  When Jamie started a family, all of his routines changed. He now feels extremely lucky that he works for himself, being able to pick and choose his own hours.   He doesn’t have to miss a sports day, he can take his son to football and his daughter to dance classes, and he believes that it is all thanks to putting those routines, systems and processes in place.   As an ambitious, lifestyle business owner, Jamie can dictate life on his own terms.  Routine plays a really important part of this for Jamie. If you want to become a Routine Machine, then you can now grab a free chapter of John’s latest bestselling book of the same name. How has the One Percent Club helped Jamie? Jamie’s main reason for joining the One Percent Club was to align himself with like minded people who all have similar values. He read John’s first book (Big Ideas… for Small Businesses), and he wanted a platform that enabled him to be closer to John and Jason to copy their model.   As John says in Big Ideas… “Who you hang around with REALLY matters. We’ve all heard it said that ‘you are the sum of the five people closest to you’, or ‘your network is your net worth’.   Well, this is one cliché that is true. That immediate environment around you sculpts who you are.  Your best chance of becoming a millionaire is to hang around with five millionaires – their habits, routines, ways of thinking, ability to spot an opportunity, the language they use, the networks they have access to.  This will all rub off on you via osmosis, and before you know it, you’re millionaire number six.” 3 Grades away from a Black Belt Health and well-being are important to Jamie and he is currently only 3 grades away from obtaining his black belt in Karate.   Jamie believes that the skills learnt from Karate can be transferred into his business life and his own personal development.  He feels they are similar in the sense of continual repetition, for example making his kicks sharper and harder, learning how to block faster and be more in touch, becoming more flexible.  He’s also not afraid of groundhog day, he embraces the boring repetition, repetition, repetition that ultimately leads to success, whether in martial arts, or in business.  Top ten hit on iTunes Jamie wrote a song for his wife when they got married in Jamaica. The song was called ‘Let’s get married’ and it hit the top ten reggae chart on iTunes, up there with alongside legendary Bob Marley, Shaggy and Kevin Little. How long did Jamie hold his spot in the top ten?   You’ll have to listen to the podcast to find out! GUEST BIO: My guest on today’s show is a full-stack developer, having recently joined Test Double which is an agency of highly skilled developers on a mission to improve how the world writes software. Prior to Test Double, he spent a decade working for 1Password where he focused his efforts on browser extensions and web page filling features. EPISODE DESCRIPTION: Phil’s guest on today’s IT Career Energizer podcast is Jamie Phelps. He is a full-stack developer at TestDouble. A firm that is working to improve the way the world writes software and wrangles code. Prior to that Jamie worked for Pier 1, 1Password and ran his own IT consultancy company. His areas of expertise include Ruby, Typescript, JavaScript, Go, Swift, Objective-C, and several other languages. KEY TAKEAWAYS: (1.06) – First, I want to ask you how you came to IT. You seem to have started your IT career a little later than average, so it would be interesting to hear how this transition happened. Jamie explains when he first attended university he studied music and religion. He went to graduate school to study the New Testament. When he went back to university to do his Ph.D. it dawned on him that he would probably be at school for another 3 to 5 years. During which time he would have to live very frugally, a realization that led to him switching to computer science. (2.12) – Can you please share a unique career tip with the I.T. career audience? Jamie’s most important piece of advice is to build a good network of people. Doing this stands you in good stead, especially later in your career. As you progress and become more senior the problems get bigger. So, it is always good to have people you can talk to. At some point, you will reach a stage where it is impossible to know absolutely everything. When that happens, you need a pool of experts you can trust and turn to for advice. (3.15) - How do you personally go about developing your network? Jamie mostly developed his network through Twitter. He also made a lot of connections while working at 1Password. Going to meetups and getting involved in IT communities have helped too. The people he met at these sorts of events shared his passion for the same tech. So, they were always there to back him up and help. Often, they had already faced and overcome the same or a very similar problem to the one he was facing. So, usually, he gets fast results when he consults with his trusted network. (4.53) – Can you tell us about your worst career moment? And what you learned from that experience. Fortunately, Jamie has not had a lot of bad career moments. But, he does remember one situation that made him feel bad. It happened when he was working for a firm that sold software. They realized that someone was using their website to see whether stolen credit cards were still active. Naturally, the moment the team realized they were being used in this way, they wanted to stop his activities. After a long weekend of time and effort, they finally managed to do so. But, it did not feel good to know that weaknesses in their system had played a role in helping someone to profit from his criminal activities. To make sure it did not happen again, they switched to a more robust payment provider. It taught Jamie that sometimes it is best to pay for an expert rather than always depend on your own abilities. (6.41) – So, in terms of what you learned from that, is it about making sure you select the right provider? What did you take away from that situation? Jamie explains that as well as looking for a good provider, in the first place, you need to periodically review your decisions. When they first set up their payment option it was the best that was available. But, eventually, they realized that the world had changed and that other providers now offered a far better option. You also need to be careful of the “not invented here” syndrome. It is all too easy to fall into the trap of thinking that something you write in-house is always going to be better than something an outside provider writes. In many cases, the opposite is true. (7.38) – What was your best career moment?  For Jamie that was writing a Rails program that later evolved into the Watchtower element of the 1password system. This software oversees user’s websites and tells them the moment a security breach is spotted. Jamie is very proud of building the first iteration of the system in Rails. He did it in response to the Heartbleed Bug, which hit in April 2014. It was a large SSL vulnerability that caused lots of damage. In response to the bug, 1Password asked Jamie to build something that would enable their clients to identify if their site had been hit by the bug. He is understandably proud of the fact that he was able to come up with the necessary system in just 3 days. (9.06) – Can you tell us what excites you about the future of the IT industry and careers? Jamie is really excited by the advancements in language compilers. They have given rise to a lot more robust programming languages. These advancements have provided us languages that are a lot safer to use. They have enabled programmers to be much more productive. Both of which have made it possible to achieve so much more. (10.18) - Do you think that's a trend that will continue? Jamie believes that advancements in computing power combined with further compiler enhancements mean that things will continue to improve. (10.59) – What drew you to a career in IT? Jamie had planned to pursue a career in academia and become a college professor. But, the statistics showed that actually becoming a professor was going to be very difficult. Not only that, getting the qualifications he needed to attempt to do so, would mean living on a meager salary, for many years. So, he switched to computing. (11.39) – What is the best career advice you have ever received? It was not advice that was given to Jamie directly. In fact, it was something he heard on a friend’s podcast. On one show his friend advised his audience to ask themselves if they wanted 10 times more of what was happening right now. If, when you are looking at what you are doing in your career, the answer is no, it is probably time to make a change. Jamie has followed that advice and it has helped his career. (12.20) - Conversely, what is the worst career advice you've ever received? At the time Jamie received his worst career advice he was working for a large firm with downtown offices. So, when he said he was going to leave and work for 1software, a Canadian startup, virtually nobody had heard of, people advised him not to do it. Fortunately, he did not listen and that is when his IT career took off. (13.37) – If you were to begin your IT career again, right now, what would you do? Jamie found this question hard to answer. He said that he does not really know what he would have done differently. This is because the positive directions his career has gone in have been largely accidental. So, he feels that if he had been able to make more informed decisions things may not have necessarily turned out as well as they have. (14.10) – What are you currently focusing on in your career? Right now, Jamie is working at catching up with the world of Ruby on Rails. He is also developing his consulting and soft skills. (14.38) – What is the number one non-technical skill that has helped you the most in your IT career? His ability to dig into documents, pull out the salient points and become productive quickly has really helped him in his IT career. Interestingly, these are the skills he learned while studying for the career in academia that he never pursued (15.16) - What do you do to keep your own IT career energized? Jamie finds that staying curious, keeps him interested, learning and moving forward. Sometimes the most mundane tasks lead to you learning about something really interesting and useful. For example, early in his career, he was working on a report that showed how many customers gave their phone number to the cashier. It was a pretty boring task. But, while doing it, he learned about The North American Numbering Plan (NANP). He was fascinated by how this organization that manages how the area codes and numbers for 24 North American countries works. (17.05) - What do you do in your spare time away from technology? Jamie enjoys playing Ultimate Frisbee. He also does a lot of camping, hiking, backpacking, and geocaching with his wife. (17.24) – Phil asks Jamie to share a final piece of career advice with the audience. Jamie’s advice is to find products or companies that you really believe in to work on and with. BEST MOMENTS: (2.58) JAMIE – "Make sure that you've built up that network of folks that you can rely on for their expertise." (3.21) JAMIE – "I developed a lot of my network through Twitter." (9.51) JAMIE – "The advancements in the compiler technology have given us languages that are safer to use, and also allow us to be more productive." (14.55) JAMIE – "Being able to dig into documentation, figure out what's salient, and be productive quickly, in an unfamiliar environment are skills that have helped my IT career." (17.52) JAMIE – "I would always choose the company or the product that I believe in more than maybe a salary or a title." Do you and your spouse work well together? For Jamie and Tim, starting a business together meant learning each other’s strengths and weaknesses and balancing each other out. Tim likes to dive in and get things done, Jamie has great attention to detail which takes more time. This could be a recipe for frustration, or it could be an opportunity to get further together than they ever could apart. Communication and commitment to a shared goal is the key. Jamie Good is one of the people who have pioneered using chatbots in L&D. In this interview we explore how chat can be used in L&D. He talks about a great example of a conference chatbot that focused on helping conference attendees to collect their takeaway from sessions and making those takeaways more actionable. For Jamie, one of the most powerful applications of chatbots in L&D is in performance supports, which is something that Paul Healy from Learning Pool also talks about in a later podcast. This interview is also packed full of great advice from Jamie about getting started with chatbots in L&D. To go along with the podcast series we have released an eBook with all transcripts of the interviews. To go along with the podcast series on How artificial intelligence is changing the way L&D is working, we have released an eBook with all transcripts of the interviews. Jamie Hurley openly discusses a physical disorder that he has gone through over the past few years. While trying his best with doctors and surgeries, he ended up conjoining the help from physicians with a new drug he had heard about from a friend called Kratom. Kratom combined with the treatment he had received from doctors helped him tremendously. Jamie details his entire experience with his health issues and expresses the relief he had gotten from the controversial drug Kratom. Jamie also goes into his new venture into Micro-dosing. Micro-dosing is a new treatment in which a person takes incredibly small threshold amounts of psychedelics depending on the needs of the user. For Jamie it is used to treat his depression. What makes this so interesting is that, the little I know of Jamie, he’s a very outgoing and social person. He is a funny, very intelligent, and kind person. I couldn’t believe that someone like himself fought with depression. Jamie states that his depression is present when he is alone, so he struggles with it almost every night. As with all guests, I’d like to thank Jamie for his complete honesty. Especially about his medical issues which are so personal. I would also like to state that Polishing The Black Stone does not advocate the use of any drugs whatsoever. The subjects covered in this podcast are for informational use only. Be safe. As you might expect, Jamie’s family also includes many four-legged friends: a horse, a miniature donkey, two dogs, and a handful of indoor cats! In 2008 Jamie started her “little, bitty business”, unsure of where it would go. Today, Yellow Barn Media is a solid source of income and provides for her family. Niche Down, Niche Down! Jamie considers herself a bit of a social butterfly, which made the advent of Facebook and social media especially exciting for her. Having a background in network marketing, Jamie wondered how social media could enhance her work. She started playing around with Facebook, then began to strategically use Facebook in her business. Jamie casually coached others on how to use Facebook for business, and she did it for free. Friends noticed that Jamie lit up when talking about social media marketing and suggested that she should start charging for her coaching sessions. She took their advice and formed a business. For a while, Jamie worked a full time job and did social media coaching as a side gig. Another wise mentor told her that if she wanted to bring her passion to the next level, she should niche down. He asked her, “What could you see yourself doing for the rest of your life? What do you have a ton of knowledge about?” For Jamie, it’s horses. Jamie rebranded her business to Yellow Barn Media and ramped up to take the equestrian world by social media storm. Understanding The Horsing Industry You Brilliant Business Moms already know that businesses offer one of two things: Products Services The equestrian industry is no different. In the equestrian world, you might see services like horse trainers or products like saddles. (Though Jamie notes in the horse industry, most businesses are product based and use e-commerce platforms.)  Once you’ve immersed yourself in a given industry, the number of products and services are endless. This is a great perspective to keep in mind when creating a niche business model! Rebranding, Risk Taking, And Diving In Focusing exclusively on the horse industry was scary for Jamie. But after much thought and prayer, she knew it was the right thing to do. She admits that changing anything in business is a risk. But what greatness comes from playing it safe? Jamie had a great strategy for breaking into a new niche: Get face-to-face. Knowing her marketing dollars were limited, Jamie focused exclusively on getting face-to-face with horse industry businesses. Attend industry events. In the time before she became a mom, she traveled to horse expos in order to make a strong first impression. Dressed to impress, Jamie would visit the different booths and talk to business owners about their needs and her services. Offer to speak and resource share. Jamie offered to speak for free at these events and provided a wealth of free information; a brilliant move! Be gutsy! Jamie’s marketing model was simply to dive in headfirst, getting in front of as many people as possible. She did her best and prayed clients would hire her. And it worked! Jamie hasn’t gained clients herself via social media, as she’s observed the majority of the horse industry doesn’t know they need the help! We think it’s very astute of Jamie to know her target market so well. Failing Forward, Jamie’s Personal ‘Learning Opportunity’ Over the last couple of months, Jamie has hit a second crossroad in her business. Once again, it's time for her to reevaluate her business model and make some adjustments. Talking about failures - or perceived failures - is admittedly uncomfortable. But Jamie is a firm believer that our would-be failures are actually marvelous learning opportunities. Whether you’ve been in business for 6 months or 16 years, Jamie says solopreneurs need to understand that failures are nothing to be ashamed of. Jamie shares a very personal example of a business ‘learning opportunity’ she recently experienced. She developed a marketing course for her business - complete with 9 videos, and targeted the course for the horse industry. She invested resources to hire a videographer and produced a snazzy, informative, killer piece of content. This video marketing series was exactly the resource that the horse industry needed! Jamie launched the course at an affordable rate of $47 and waited. The response was dismal. Jamie only sold 2 courses, which didn’t come close to paying for her investment. Jamie so believed in the importance of this piece of content she produced, that she was still committed to getting it in front of as many people as possible. She decided to give away the course, completely free. Jamie stretched her dollars and paid $600 to advertise on the cover of a top industry magazine reaching 6,000 subscribers. You would think her opt-ins would have skyrocketed, right? Wrong. Only 12 people picked up Jamie’s course. Jamie was beyond disappointed. She was actually angry! Jamie knew without a doubt that this course was desperately needed by her target market, but she couldn’t even give this valuable information away. After talking with her wise business mentor, Jamie realized that the horse industry just wasn’t ready for the social media services she was providing. So she has begun to brainstorm a new niche where her social media marketing savvy might be more welcome. What about the video course? Jamie was so proud of the content that she wanted others to be able to use it. As part of that testing the waters to see what’s next, Jamie decided to continue giving away her video-based social media course. Brilliant Business Moms can access it right here. (Isn't Jamie so nice?!) Affiliate Marketing And Authenticity Jamie is confident that a new niche for her business will appear soon. She has an excellent customer base already, and is excited to see what comes next. Personally, we think Jamie should try more affiliate marketing! She’s a killer affiliate partner for the Brilliant Business Planner. Her networking skills are crazy good and she has a knack for authentically recommending products. Jamie’s dad gave her this piece of advice: “Connect yourself with the right people for the right reasons.” When Jamie shares a product with her audience, they know she’s not trying to be salesy; she’s simply trying to connect them with a good tool. That authenticity and integrity is an invaluable combination, if you ask us. Thinking Like A General Contractor In her consulting meetings, Jamie found that what her clients needed wasn’t necessarily help with social media, they needed a complete marketing overhaul. Poorly designed websites, crummy logos, and zero marketing collateral was sinking their businesses. Jamie knew she didn’t have the skill set to help clients in each of those areas. And so rather than hurry around trying to learn each skill herself, she brought on others who were experts in these fields. Jamie has connected with a team of amazing people who all work together to help her clients succeed. Jamie has found the analogy of a general contractor to be helpful. Like a contractor, she partners with experts who are smarter than her to build different pieces of a customer’s proverbial marketing ‘building’. Thanks to the nimbleness of online work, Jamie was able to build out a virtual team and doesn’t necessarily need to see her employees face-to-face. Facebook or Twitter? Depends On Your Goals What’s the most powerful social media platform according to this social media expert? Facebook. For most business owners, Jamie says Facebook is an incredibly powerful tool. Perfect to get the job done. Though the days of organic reach are gone, with the right strategy Facebook is the tool to help business owners reach their intended audience. But what about for Jamie’s business? Is it the same story? Reaching her target market with Yellow Barn Media, Jamie has actually found that more personal connections have been the most successful way to build her B2B company. Because the horse industry isn’t quite as in tune with online connections, she has had great success using physical mail to reach her clients that don’t spend a lot of time on social media. The old fashioned call and card has done the trick. Jamie’s goals are unique, though. She needs to both find clients and get social media influencers to recognize her work. To get in front of those influencers, Jamie has found Twitter to be her secret weapon. Send Out Cards, A Brilliant Tip! Handwritten notes are decidedly Old School, but that personal touch is seriously lacking in today’s business. Jamie’s brilliant tip is to use a service called Send Out Cards. Perfect for busy business moms, Send Out Cards is an online platform that allows you to mail physical cards with personalized messages to customers. They offer thousands of cards to choose from, and many personalization options. Jamie says she could share numerous success stories of wowing clients with a personal card and a box of brownies, all for under $4 and done in 2 minutes time. Absolutely brilliant! While social media and email marketing are Jamie’s passions, she understands the power of doing business the old way. In fact, she thinks businesses may experience more success if they were to learn from our grandparents’ generation. Jamie is planning on experimenting with mailing a physical newsletter to clients. She wants to test the strategy and see if it sets her apart, especially when marketing to business clients who aren’t as active as they should be on social media. (Reminds Sarah of Amy Dacyczyn and The Tightwad Gazette!) Social Media Advice For Business Beginners Jamie has two simple pieces of advice for business beginners: Be Consistent Be Yourself The number of social platforms and tools are endless, but to be compelling on any of them you must have a clear sense of who you are and use those platforms consistently. Test and measure to see what works and what doesn’t, then adjust accordingly. Jamie’s Little Cowboy Jamie’s son Edison is 20 months old and already showing an interest in the equestrian life, much to mom’s delight! Jamie thinks it’s absolutely adorable that her son will run through the house with treats in his hand asking for ‘Bubba’, the family’s horse, all day long. Could Edison be saddling up to the life of a cowboy? Maybe so! Find Jamie Online!
