The hope is to re-establish a beachhead for a kind of liberal political journalism that has become a bit hard to find recently, but that embodies a more insurgent spirit—where it seems natural rather than heretical that new ideas and leaders should challenge older ones, and liberals have the confidence to confront the forces of reaction directly across a range of liabilities.  That's the sensibility I was trained with and have nurtured over a nearly 20 year career in journalism. Many Americans just assume vets always vote for the candidate who talks toughest about national defense, or offers strong positions on policies related to terrorism. While in some cases that may be true, the biggest question this year is still quite simple- Do vets favor Trump or Harris? A recent survey of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) members, offers an interesting glimpse at where this group stands, just days before the election.IAVA, CEO, and Army veteran Allison Jaslow reveals the survey results and shares how the survey breaks across categories like gender. The survey also tells a unique story about IAVA members, who are younger than other veteran groups, and after their service in Iraq/Afghanistan have often done the heaviest lifting during the Global War on Terrorism.More from IAVA here:https://iava.org/Check out Connecting Vets for more military news and veteran stories:https://www.audacy.com/connectingvetsConnect with CBS Eye on Veterans, Host, Phil Briggsphil@connectingvets.comFollow:@philbriggsVet@connectingvets See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Last week you heard from Bonnie Carroll about her work with host Paul Rieckhoff to create the American Veterans for Ukraine organization. Immediately after recording that show, in advance of Memorial Day, at a historic event at Ukraine House in Washington, D.C., five leading voices from the American veterans community formally announced the formation of a groundbreaking new veterans organization focused on supporting victory in Ukraine. American Veterans for Ukraine, is a groundbreaking new effort from our host, Paul Rieckhoff, and past guests of the show Bonnie Carroll, Matt Gallagher, Adrian Bonenberger and Nolan Peterson. AVU is an American, non-partisan, non-profit organization with a clear mission: connecting, uniting and empowering American veterans to support victory for Ukraine.  AVU's two lines of effort to ensure that mission is accomplished are: 1. Driving public support for Ukraine. 2. Protecting continued US government funding for the fight. Along with the AVU Founders, attendees heard from Hope for Ukraine CEO, Yuriy Boyechko, Co-Founder of TAPS Ukraine and reserve Lieutenant in the Ukrainian military, Yuliya Dmytrova, as well as Katherine Semenyuk, a Ukrainian American military chaplain who on the first day of the Russian invasion, gave birth to her fifth child in a bunker, embodying the spirit of survival and determination. A video statement was also presented from Admiral James Stavridis, USN (Ret) and 16th Supreme Allied Commander of NATO. AVU's five Co-Founders are known worldwide for their commitment to America, to the veterans community, and to issues of national security, global security, and peace. They represent a deep and diverse scope of backgrounds and are combining efforts to meet this critical moment in American and global history. It was an inspiring event and we want you to join us. Days before AVU launched another great organization hosted a gala as IAVA Salutes had another great event in support of their noble cause.

She has served on the Board of Directors for Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, was a founding Director on the Board of the 2LT Richard W. Collins III Foundation, and was the first and only woman on the Board of Trustees for Wentworth Military Academy.  Jaslow is a Term Member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a charter member of the National Parks Conservation Assn.'s Veterans Council, and was named both an Aspen Institute Ideas Festival Scholar and Aspen Security Forum Scholar. For her military service, Jaslow's awards include the Bronze Star Medal and the Army Commendation Medal with a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster. Allison Jaslow is the CEO of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, an Iraq War Veteran, and a dedicated public servant.  Nationally, Jaslow is recognized as a leading voice on the impact of the military-civilian divide on our political system and as an authority on the unique challenges faced by women in the military.  A former Army Captain, Jaslow is also a seasoned political and communications strategist, serving on the staff of several Members of Congress, and as a White House communications aide. She's a former Executive Director of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), is a co-Founder of Operation Liberty and has recently served as an Adjunct Professor of the Practice at Duke University. When she was previously Executive Director of IAVA, Jaslow led a national campaign to increase recognition of, and support for, women veterans. The “She Who Borne the Battle” campaign boldly targeted the Department of Veterans Affairs' gender exclusive motto and put the needs of women veterans on the map  – and in the headlines. Jaslow also oversaw the organization's successful campaigns to block over $4 billion in cuts to veteran education benefits, and to reverse the Defense Department's efforts to claw back bonuses paid to California National Guardsman. Jaslow was instrumental in orchestrating the first-ever “Commander in Chief Forum” in partnership with NBC, ensuring issues important to the military community remained front and center during the 2016 presidential campaign. The forum drew over 15 million viewers. Professional background: Prior to joining IAVA, Jaslow built a reputation as a leader, trusted advisor and innovative political strategist in Washington and on campaigns across the country. She served as Chief of Staff to Illinois Congresswoman Cheri Bustos, after leading Bustos' successful campaign to unseat an incumbent Member of Congress in what has since become a bellwether region for the success of both political parties. Jaslow also served as a communications aide in the White House, as Press Secretary for former Virginia Senator and decorated Vietnam veteran Jim Webb and in leadership roles for various other Members of Congress. Jaslow has twice testified before Congress and made appearances on national news programs including NBC's Today Show, CNN's Anderson Cooper 360, MSNBC's Rachel Maddow Show, and the CBS Evening News, where she speaks on issues ranging from national politics to our national security and the military-civilian divide. She has contributed to The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN Opinion and Marie Claire in addition to other national publications. Jaslow has also worked closely with the entertainment industry, leading impact partnerships with several noteworthy films including Warner Brothers' Dunkirk, Netflix's War Machine, and Blood Stripe, an independent film which depicts a woman Marine's transition from combat to civilian life. We discussed how she became the voice of the #SheWhoBorneTheBattle” campaign and she explained why changing the VA motto needs to happen, in order to truly serve the needs of female veterans. She also shared the goals of IAVA in 2023, which includes a powerful push for Congress to finally change its stance on cannabis and psychedelic therapies that are proving to have incredible benefits for veterans suffering from PTSD and chronic pain.We also welcomed a chat with Army Reserve Lt. Col. Lisa Jaster, who was one of the first women to complete the grueling combat training course and become an elite Army Ranger. She shared how it shaped her leadership today. Small Elementary School, where more than 90 percent of the students lived in poverty. The music teacher soon found his voice as an advocate and has worked ever since on behalf of public school students, schools, teachers and education staff professionals. “I could not read when I was in first grade,” Spar recalls. “I struggled in school. But the educators in my life were empowered to make my success a priority, and that's just what they did. I want the same world for my family and for all of Florida's children.” At Turie T. Small, Spar served as school-improvement chair for two years and as a union steward for seven years. He would go on to become president of his local union in May 2003 and led Volusia United Educators until he was elected FEA vice president in 2018. In September 2020, he was named FEA president after the previous president, Fedrick C. Ingram, was elected secretary-treasurer of the American Federation of Teachers. During his 15 years leading the Volusia union, Spar negotiated 14 contracts, handled numerous grievances and arbitrations, and spent many long hours advocating for members and working families. In 2017, he led the merger of the Volusia Teachers Organization and the Volusia Educational Support Association to create Volusia United Educators(link is external). The new union has nearly 3,800 members and represents more than 6,000 teachers, paraprofessionals and office specialists in Volusia County Schools. New initiative to ban all abortions in Ohio

Description:   This week, Randi, Jaime, and Gabe discuss yesterday's Commander in Chief Forum, sponsored by the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans Association (IAVA.org). Hillary Clinton expressed urgency in assisting active-duty and veteran members of the military to reduce rates of sexual assault and suicide. Donald Trump said that rape in the military was due to men and women serving together in uniform. In Ohio news, a new ballot initiative was filed with the Ohio Attorney General's office. The initiative language states the purpose: “To prohibit abortion of all unborn human beings, without exception, and classifying it as aggravated murder in the State of Ohio.” NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio Executive Director Kellie Copeland said: “The proposed law would punish women, plain and simple. If passed, women and doctors would be imprisoned for any abortion, even one to save a woman's life. Also, the language would block prescription birth control, emergency contraception, IUDs, and could impact access to in-vitro fertilization. The so-called ‘Heartbeat Bill' was unconstitutional. Multiple anti-abortion restrictions signed by John Kasich have been ruled unconstitutional. When will anti-abortion zealots stop trying to punish women?”   The filling is the very first steps in the ballot initiative process, when the AG's office and ballot board reviews petitions for basic legal requirements. If approved, petition solicitors can begin to collect the 300,000 valid signatures they will need to qualify for the ballot. They could complete the task in time for the 2017 election, but signatures do not expire, so this proposal could go to voters in any future year. One theory is that, if passed, this law would give President Donald Trump a test case to overturn Roe v. Wade after appointing one or more US Supreme Court justices.
