DESCRIPTION In this episode, Jo & Vicky are joined by Michael Shikashio whose main focus for the past decade has been helping dogs that have a history of aggression. Michael trains other trainers to do the same, which has enabled him to reach and transform the lives of even more dogs and their guardians. Jo, Vicky and Michael discuss why he chose this niche and how doing so has benefited him, his clients and the profitability of his business. Michael explains how he built trust, authority and connections and quickly reached the point where other trainers were trusting him to train them. KEY TAKEAWAYS Focusing on a niche grows your authority, makes it easy to articulate what you offer, and results in more sales. Identifying a hole in the market and filling it is a win-win. Teaching others is a great way to help them and make your business far more profitable. Podcasts, conferences, workshops and writing articles for others builds trust and authority. Using social media helps but personal connection is far more powerful. There are education platforms that already have email lists of people who will be interested in taking your course, so start there. Build your brand with integrity. You will attract criticism/haters, don´t take it personally. Letting the negativity in limits your ability to love what you do and help your clients. Building a business is complex and can feel overwhelming. Break it down by asking yourself what´s the next step and focusing on taking it. Hire people to do your accounts etc asap. Look at it as an investment. Your time and passion are what you need to really grow your business. Don´t say yes to things until you are sure it will grow your business. How to evaluate this is explained in the episode. Initially you have to hustle and give more than you get back. But don´t do it long-term. It is not effective or sustainable. Automate everything you can, including in your personal life. Use processes to rinse and repeat what works. Keep things simple. Get one stream of income working before setting up another one. Be consistent. BEST MOMENTS “Spend the time to earn people´s trust, start by doing small things, little gigs .” “You might not want to do your flagship course on your own platform .” “Once you get your first hater, you know you’ve made it.” “We are not in the business of dogs; we are actually in the business of people.” “Always evaluate not only money investment, but also the time and effort investment.” “Bend, flex and pivot, but always come back to your strategy.” “Focus on one thing at a time.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://aggressivedog.com https://www.dogtrainersconnection.com SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity/ Let´s Talk Dog Business Strategy Book - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-Dog-Business-Strategy/dp/1068791705 ABOUT THE HOSTS Meet Jo and Vicky! This conversation with Nick Thomson was an absolute masterclass in why businesses need to start thinking about podcasting as a key marketing tool. Nick brought such a fresh and insightful perspective, particularly around the idea that podcasting isn't just about downloads—it's about brand awareness, networking, and positioning yourself as an authority in your field. One of the things I loved about this episode was how we tackled the common objections businesses have when it comes to starting a podcast. Whether it's concerns about ROI, finding a niche, or creating engaging content, Nick had practical and actionable advice for all of it. The way he reframed podcasting as a strategic business tool rather than just another content channel was incredibly eye-opening.This episode reaffirmed everything I believe about podcasting—it's not just for hobbyists or media companies, but for every business that wants to build trust and authority with their audience. Episode #214: The Power Of Niching Down Join us today as Colleen Interview's Suzi Freeman on Take the Leap. We dive deep into the transformative journey of mental performance coaching for teens with the incredible Susie Freeman, founder of Teen Warrior Academy. As I reflect on our conversation, I wanted to share three key takeaways that resonated with me and that I believe can inspire you in your own personal and professional journeys: Embrace Evolution: Just as I am transitioning my podcast to a new host, Suzi shared her own evolution in business. It's essential to recognize that growth often requires us to let go of what we initially envisioned. Sometimes, we are meant to build the foundation and then pass the baton to someone who can take it to the next level. Embrace change and trust the process! The Importance of Mental Wellness: Suzi's work highlights a critical issue—mental and emotional wellness among teens. We discussed the alarming rates of mental health struggles and how vital it is to equip our youth with the tools to cope. As leaders and parents, we must prioritize mental preparedness, not just in sports but in all aspects of life. Let's advocate for resources and support systems that empower our young people to thrive. Niche Down to Elevate: One of the most powerful insights from our discussion was the importance of niching down. Suzi found her passion in working specifically with special teams in football, which has allowed her to make a significant impact. When we focus on a specific area, we can become experts and attract the right clients who resonate with our mission. Don't be afraid to refine your focus; it can lead to greater fulfillment and success. I invite you to listen to this episode and explore how you can apply these insights in your own life. Whether you're navigating a career transition, supporting a young person in your life, or seeking to refine your professional focus, there's something here for everyone. In a saturated marketplace, it is crucial to niche down. With so many online entrepreneurs, it's more important than ever that your message is clear and people readily recognize that you hold the key to the solution they need. How can you accomplish this? By niching down. When you niche down, your message becomes uber clear, and you have more opportunity to stand out amidst the sea of online noise. What does it mean to niche down? If you think you can help everyone, you will ultimately help no one. That's a zinger. But it is a harsh reality. When you talk to everyone, the people you can best help may not recognize that you are speaking to them. Your message should be so clear that it both attracts your ideal client and repels those who are not a good fit. Niching down means narrowing your scope, but that doesn't mean you are limiting your business. There is no need to fear a decrease in revenue or experience a scarcity mindset. It means you will become so clear on what you do and who you serve that there is no doubt by anyone who comes across your content or website. When that happens, your best-fit clients will know you are the one to follow and ultimately hire. How do you approach narrowing your scope and identifying your niche? The best way to approach niching down and identifying your niche is to think about an hourglass. The top of the hourglass is full, just like your brain is full of ideas and ways you can help many people. But here is where your message is unclear until you have narrowed it down with specificity. Start small and expand. This philosophy is beneficial if you are multipassionate. Read the full show notes and access all links. Bryce Hansen's entrepreneurial journey began in his childhood, when he sold treats to classmates and later freelanced in graphic design, videography, and photography during high school and college. While attending BYU, where he earned a degree in design with a focus on UX and a minor in entrepreneurship, Bryce co-founded a wedding supply rental business with his roommates. This venture eventually evolved into a successful homemade brick oven pizza operation, where he sold up to $500 worth of pizzas every weekend. After he was done slinging pizzas and wanted to make a bigger impact on society, Bryce joined the sandbox program at BYU where he founded an amazing company. Inspired by his father's 30-year career in nonprofits, Bryce recognized the financial challenges these organizations face and co-founded Devote, a fintech platform designed to streamline nonprofit financial processes. Under his leadership, Devote expanded its services to include spend management, high-yield accounts, and a donation platform, all provided at no cost to nonprofits.
