What if the January 6, 2021 Insurrection had been successful? A tale of what was, what could have been, and what still could be? 1/6: The Graphic Novel (Sun Print Solutions, 2023) chillingly illustrates how close we came to authoritarian rule in America and the threats to our democracy that we still face. In the tradition of speculative fiction from George Orwell's 1984 to Margaret Atwood's Handmaid's Tale to the Twilight Zone, it explores themes of autocracy, scapegoating, strategic disinformation, and more, all told through a compelling, character-driven story. Drawing on real-life events, 1/6 travels the road that led from back-room meetings, white supremacist rallies, and the Four Seasons Landscaping parking lot to a violent attack on the Capitol that left several Americans dead and shook our nation to its core. It then imagines a world in which the events of that day turned out very differently. 1/6 is for lovers of graphic novels, lovers of speculative fiction, lovers of politics, and lovers of our democracy. It's a story that demands our attention and calls on us to take action…while we still can. Issue #1 of the 4-Issue Series is available on Amazon, Issuu, and in a print edition. Kishauna Soljour is an Assistant Professor of Public Humanities at San Diego State University. Her most recent writing appears in the edited collection: From Rights to Lives: The Evolution of the Black Freedom Struggle. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

What if the attack on the US Capitol succeeded? 1/6 is a 4 part comics series written by Alan Jenkins and Gan Golan and illustrated by Will Rosado. Prof. Jenkins and Golan joined me on the podcast to talk about their comic which combines comics journalism, speculative fiction and activism.  Drawing on real-life events, 1/6 travels the road that led from back-room meetings, white supremacist rallies, and the Four Seasons Landscaping parking lot to a violent attack on the Capitol that left several Americans dead and shook our nation to its core. It imagines a world in which the events of that day turned out very differently. Through a diverse cast of characters 1/6 builds towards a story of how we might organize and fight for democracy. Topics:*"Best of" continues as I start with a segment on famous people who did terrible things and managed to make a comeback.*One of my favorite moments from the past was the infamous "Four Seasons Landscaping debacle." Do you remember this? Trump was bitching about the election and a press conference was called "at the Four Seasons." Now they wanted the hotel, but somehow wound up at a fucking landscape supply place that shares the name. I spent considerable time unpacking this and I even called the guy who runs the adjacent porno store for his eyewitness report.*From August 2020 to January 2021, I was off my meds. This became a real problem for me as evidenced in a segment about things that got under my skin that would in no way bother me now. Essentially the lesson here is, "don't stop taking your medicine. I did have a good reason though as it was important that I be off my meds in order to successfully give away the kidney.*A segment shedding more light on the anxiety issues and the stupid, nonsensical problems I create for myself. he makers of VRChat have picked up $80 million in funding in a round of Series D investments led by Anthos Capital, with participation from Makers Fund, GFR Fund, and other investors. Per a press release, the company said it intends to build on the services currently used by over 40,000 concurrent users. The $80M will be used to “expedite development of a creator economy,” develop a “social discovery system for more meaningful experiences,” and expand the software to other VR platforms. VRChat has stood out as a somewhat unexpected success in the VR World—it's not a game, but a social space where users can goof around and socialize using custom-made, sometimes copyright-skirting avatars. The platform has risen to mainstream attention on a number of occasions—including after the 2020 election—where a group of users recreated the site of former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani's ill-fated election press conference in the parking lot of Four Seasons Landscaping in Philadelphia. https://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/384176/VRChat_scoops_up_80_million_in_funding_with_help_from_Anthos_Capital.php --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pixel-sultan/support

In Episode 15 behind the Secret Door, Alicia and Frances express their post-election blues, including a discussion of how the current President is handling his loss, Alicia's fights on Facebook with some always-Trumpers, and the hilarious Four Seasons Landscaping press conference. Alicia starts off the show with a bang by revealing how former guest Therese Odell feels about the current changes Trump has made in his defense, and she explains how it reveals the workings of a dictator-like attitude. Alicia goes on to explain to Frances how the country could be in trouble if Trump uses his new defense and refuses to concede the presidency to Biden. Also, on the show, two of Alicia's republican Facebook friends post outlandish arguments about the fraud conspiracy surrounding the election. Tune in to see how she replied, and the catchphrase Frances uses when someone has been “roasted.” Did you catch the Four Seasons Landscaping press conference? Do you think the ignorance in the Republican party will ever fix itself? Do you think Trump will ever concede the presidency or will Biden have to use the law to force him out? Do you think 2021 will be any better for our nation, especially given the rising Covid cases in America? You can comment, email, or message them to share your opinions and ideas. Some might call ‘Dildos and Dead People' a provocative title for a podcast, and if it wasn't an episode of Emsolation you might have justified concerns about why those two things are being bought together into one podcast. Then again, maybe you saw that title and thought to yourself “I'm intrigued” or “no way, is this an audio tutorial” or even “finally” and if that's the case, then you probably can't sit with us, but we still totally appreciate you being here anyway. So for all those who need reassurance on the episode title before you press play and proceed, it all revolves around the Republicans and the fall out of the U.S. election. Obviously if you haven't spent ALL your spare time awaiting the arrival of Em and Michael's post mortem of the US election, then how very dare you and do you even know what you've been missing out on?. There's a list of things to check off, but the fact that the Republicans booked their press conference into a car park at a place called Four Seasons Landscaping, rather than the Four Seasons Hotel is our priority. That's where the dildos and dead people come in, yes seriously, the Republicans chose to hold a press conference in the carpark at Four Seasons Landscaping, which just happens to sit between a crematorium and an adult sex shop, because of course it does. There's also Em and Michael's favourite celebrity reactions to the U.S. election to cover off, plus they wanna share their love for Jill Biden, and Michael wants to outline the moments that made him cry the most. There's also a bunch of other things happening on the planet, so we'll also check in on Dan Andrews and the further lifting of restrictions in Victoria, and Em has been sitting on a LOT of excitement around the announcement of the cast for the Australian version of the Broadway musical ‘Hamilton'. So step away from whatever it is you're wasting your time on right now, and spend some quality time hanging out with us instead. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
