It is the most fundamental question of humanity: are we alone? Are we the only intelligent life in the Universe? The answer, whether it is yes, or no, has profound implications on every aspect of our lives. And yet, until very recently, the scientific community at large has refused to officially pursue the answer to this question. My guest today is no stranger to controversy and not afraid to ask the question and to give his answer. Professor Avi Loeb is a Harvard astrophysicist and arguably one of the world's most famous scientists today. In his 2021 book "Extraterrestrial: The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth", he proposes that the interstellar object Oumouamoua, which passed through our solar system in 2017, may indeed be the creation of an alien intelligence. His book became an immediate New York Times bestseller and caused a huge stir in the media and the scientific community. Professor Loeb is the author of five books and over 800 scientific papers. In 2012 Time magazine named him one of the 25 most influential people in space. Professor Loeb is the Frank B. Baird Jr. professor of science at Harvard University, where he is also director of the Black Hole Initiative and the Institute for Theory and Computation and has worked on many advances in space and astrophysics, producing pioneering and provocative research on black holes, gamma-ray bursts and the early universe. Today we will talk about his riveting hypothesis, which states that we are not alone in the Universe and about his work as the head of the Galileo Project, which focuses on the Systematic Scientific Search for Evidence of Extraterrestrial Technological Artifacts. In this episode, you'll discover: -Main stream scientists, and Avi's wish for more childlike thinking in academia...03:30 -"Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." -Carl Sagan. "Extraordinary evidence requires extraordinary funding." -Avi Loeb...07:15 -What makes Oumouamoua, the interstellar object that passed through our solar system in 2017, so unique...09:25 -There is little space for new ideas about outer space...14:30 -The Galileo Project: the million dollar question of whether to rendezvous or not...16:40 -Earth Ego and superiority complex: why the possibility of life on other planets is a threat for many...19:00 -The smartest kid on the block (as long as no one knows about the other ones)...23:00 -Professor Loeb deals with personal criticism by focusing on those who support him...27:00 -Giant Telescopes. Avi Loeb is author of the book “Extraterrestrial: The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth”. It's a story you can hardly believe, once you hear it. But here it is -- the story of the day in 2017 when telescopes around the world started tracking an object in our solar system. It was moving in such a way that scientists around the world came to the same, startling conclusion: It was an extraterrestrial spaceship. Avi Loeb is a professor of the Harvard Astronomy Department. He is also a member of the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian (which is a collaboration of Harvard College Observatory and Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. Professor Loeb received a PhD in plasma physics at age 24 from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1986) and was subsequently a long-term member at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (1988-1993), where he started to work in theoretical astrophysics. In 1993 he moved to Harvard University where he was tenured three years later. He is now the Frank B. Baird Jr. Professor of Science and former chair of the department. He also holds a visiting professorship at the Weizmann Institute of Science and a Sackler Senior Professorship by special appointment in the School of Physics and Astronomy at Tel Aviv University. Loeb has authored nearly 700 research articles and 4 books. Avi Loeb: https://astronomy.fas.harvard.edu/people/avi-loeb Something Ventured: https://somethingventured.us/
The Department of Defense has revived an Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force to gather what is known about UAPs. The task force's assessment is due to Congress by June 25. On Thursday, host Kerri Miller explores the possibilities with two experts, an astrophysicist and a conspiracy theory debunker. Guests: Dr. Avi Loeb is an astrophysicist and the Frank B. Baird Jr. Professor of Science Harvard University. Mick West is a science communicator who debunks conspiracy theories online and is the author of “Escaping the Rabbit Hole: How to Debunk Conspiracy Theories Using Facts, Logic and Respect.”

Podcast: Sean Carroll's Mindscape: Science, Society, Philosophy, Culture, Arts, and Ideas (LS 69 · TOP 0.05% what is this?)Episode: 131 | Avi Loeb on Taking Aliens SeriouslyPub date: 2021-01-25The possible existence of technologically advanced extraterrestrial civilizations — not just alien microbes, but cultures as advanced (or much more) than our own — is one of the most provocative questions in modern science. So provocative that it's difficult to talk about the idea in a rational, dispassionate way; there are those who loudly insist that the probability of advanced alien cultures existing is essentially one, even without direct evidence, and others are so exhausted by overblown claims in popular media that they want to squelch any such talk. Astronomer Avi Loeb thinks we should be taking this possibility seriously, so much so that he suggested that the recent interstellar interloper `Oumuamua might be a spaceship built by aliens. That got him in a lot of trouble. We talk about the trouble, about `Oumuamua, and the attitude scientists should take toward provocative ideas.Support Mindscape on Patreon.Abraham (Avi) Loeb received his Ph.D. in plasma physics from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Dr. Avi Loeb is a world renown Harvard Astrophysicist. He believes we were visited by Extraterrestrial technology in the form of Oumuamua in 2017. We discuss why he thinks this, the implications, and so much more (how he met Stephen Hawking, for instance). Avi's book, Extraterrestrial, is out today. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I am sure you will too!
