Watch the video of this episode here: https://youtu.be/AJJGv-5Rk4I #CondensedMatter #superconductors #quantummechanics The tagline for our podcast by Arthur C. Clarke is “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”. Theoretical physicist Felix Flicker's imaginative new book The Magick of Physics provides ample service to that notion. In Flicker's book the magic is in “condensed matter physics”, the quotidian solids, liquids, and gasses that surround us—and the more exotic matter— which form the foundations for our electronic lives, and may hold the keys to a transformed future, from quantum computing to real-life invisibility cloaks. Flicker finds magic in real physics like creating new particles which never existed before, and making crystals that shoot out light that can cut through metal. Using metaphors of wizards, infinite libraries, staffs and wands, the book has a compelling narrative that circumvents the need for equations and charts, yet conveys real, practical knowledge. Felix Flicker is a lecturer at Cardiff University in the School of Physics and Astronomy. He holds an MPhys in physics from St Catherine's College, Oxford, and received his PhD in theoretical condensed matter physics from the University of Bristol in 2015. He has published in both Nature and Science. Felix has trained in Kung Fu for twenty years and has been an instructor for fifteen years. Video version of this episode: https://youtu.be/cAMSoAUo288 UC San Diego Physics Professor Jorge Hirsch... ...joins Professor Brian Keating to discuss recent claimed a breakthrough in high-temperature superconductors, including claims they work at near ambient pressure and temperature. Here come cheap magnetic levitating trains, low-loss power distribution, free MRI scanners in every clinic…. Or not? Watch my solo episode about the controversial claims here:  https://youtu.be/hbER0AnwXD4 Since the discovery of superconductors in 1911 by Heike Kamerlingh Onnes, earning the 1913 Nobel Prize in Physics, they have been the subject of much fascination and inquiry. Some of the greatest minds in physics have grappled with how superconductivity works to drive electrical resistance to 0. The 1972 Nobel prize in Physics was awarded to John Bardeen, Leon Neil Cooper, and John Robert Schrieffer "for their BCS theory of superconductivity. Now the race is on to get the highest temperature superconductor possible; another Nobel Prize was awarded just for getting the temperature up to 35K or -396 Fahrenheit! Superconducting has remained impractical, until now... Maybe! The HUGE claim: zero resistance, at temperatures up to 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Is it a scientific breakthrough, or is it very probably fraud? The Nature Paper: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-023-05742-0 Key Concepts: Superconductors are materials that conduct electricity without resistance. Room-temperature superconductors would have a wide range of potential applications, including in power transmission, medical imaging, and quantum computing. The researchers at the University of Rochester claim to have discovered a room-temperature superconductor. However, there are some concerns about the validity of the research. It is too early to say whether the discovery is a breakthrough or a fraud. Please support the podcast by taking our short listener survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/intotheimpossible Watch the video of this episode here: https://youtu.be/Qq2OgL8Hb6o?=sub_confirmation=1 Andrei Linde is one of the main authors of inflationary cosmology. At present, it is the leading candidate for the theory of the very early stages of expansion of the universe and formation of its large scale structure. In this podcast Linde will describe some of the popular versions of this theory, as well as observational evidence it favor of inflationary cosmology. We also discuss Andrei's career, the big problems in cosmology, and how Andrei invented eternal chaotic inflation which can lead to a universe which is constantly inflating, where new universes are constantly being created. Eternal inflation is a theory that states that the universe is constantly inflating, and that new universes are constantly being created. Here's his 1986 paper about it ETERNAL CHAOTIC INFLATION http://cds.cern.ch/record/167897/files/CM-P00066672.pdf Professor Linde's seminal book PARTICLE PHYSICS AND INFLATIONARY COSMOLOGY is available in PDF format: https://arxiv.org/pdf/hep-th/0503203.pdf Here are some past episodes that complement this one: Anna Ijjas: Bouncing cosmology https://youtu.be/aGlLjq4OcmE Will Kinney: An Infinity of Worlds https://youtu.be/iDsqy9QVGoI Neil Turok Endless Universes: https://youtu.be/Dt5cFLN65fI Note there are a number of alternative theories to cosmic inflation. Some of the most popular alternatives include: The ekpyrotic universe: This theory suggests that the universe began in a state of contraction, rather than expansion. The contraction would have eventually led to a singularity, at which point the universe would have bounced back into expansion. The cyclic universe: This theory is similar to the ekpyrotic universe, but it suggests that the universe goes through a series of cycles of contraction and expansion. The varying-speed-of-light universe: This theory suggests that the speed of light was not constant in the early universe. If this is true, it could explain how the universe could have expanded rapidly without violating the laws of physics. The string gas universe: This theory suggests that the early universe was filled with a gas of strings. The strings would have interacted with each other, causing the universe to expand rapidly. Can we cure autism? Can we grow a human BRAIN in Space? Dr. Alysson Muotri joins me to discuss all these fascinating questions and more. Brain organoids are lab-grown minibrains that mimic structural and functional features of full-size brains. They are created by culturing pluripotent stem cells in a three-dimensional rotational bioreactor, and they develop over a course of months. Brain organoids have emerged as novel model systems that can be used to investigate human brain development and disorders34, as well as evolutionary studies and neural network research Muotri is a Professor at the Departments of Pediatrics and Cellular & Molecular Medicine at UC San Diego, an Associate Director of CARTA, The Center for Research and Training in Anthropology, and Director of the Stem Cell Program, and of the Archealization Center (ArchC) at UC San Diego. He moved to the Salk Institute as Pew Latin America Fellow in 2002 for postdoctoral training in the fields of neuroscience and stem cell biology. His research focuses on brain evolution and modeling neurological diseases using human-induced pluripotent stem cells and brain organoids. He has an additional focus on solving one of life's greatest mysteries: What is it that makes us uniquely human? Our unique social brains are one of the key distinguishing factors between humans and other primates. We are even very different from our closest relatives, the Neanderthals. His work has implications for the generation of human disease models by determining the molecular and cellular mechanisms driving neurological complex disorders, such as autism. It is also creating opportunities for identifying and testing novel therapeutic approaches. Understanding the evolutionary path and the tradeoffs of the modern human brain will likely illuminate the origins of human disease. Dr. Moutri has received several awards, including the prestigious NIH Director's New Innovator Award, NARSAD, Emerald Foundation Young Investigator Award, Surugadai Award, Rock Star of Innovation, NIH EUREKA Award, and two Telly Awards for Excellence in Science Communication. How does a scientist come from a Young Earth Creationist background. Luke Barnes co-authored with Geraint Lewis, of A Fortunate Universe: Life in a Finely Tuned Cosmos published by Cambridge University Press. The book explores the last forty years of scientific evidence that if the Universe had been forged with even slightly different properties, life as we know it - and life as we can imagine it - would be impossible. This has profound implications about how we understand the Universe, from its most basic particles and forces, to planets, stars and galaxies, and back through cosmic history to the birth of the cosmos. Conflicting notions about our place in the Universe are defined, defended and critiqued from scientific, philosophical and religious viewpoints. The authors' engaging and witty style addresses what fine-tuning might mean for the future of physics and the search for the ultimate laws of nature.  Luke A. Barnes is a Lecturer in astronomy and cosmology at Western Sydney University. He earned his PhD from the University of Cambridge, he has published papers in the field of galaxy formation and on the fine-tuning of the Universe for life. Often we’re told “you can’t do that” or “that’s too much to expect” when severe illness is present. This can be hard to hear when we have aspirations for more. Just because others hold conclusions or beliefs about something does not mean that it’s true for us. How do we move beyond the “impossible” when doctors and experts tell us it’s true.   Join me for this week’s episode of MindBody TV where we’ll explore how to open to possibilities others don’t think exist and let them in any way!

Does your mind create matter? What happens when an irresistible force meets an unmovable object? What is the nature of free will? Find out, in this special episode of the Into the Impossible Podcast in collaboration with Deepak Chopra’s “Chopra Well”. Fundamentals: Closer to Truth: A Look at the work of Nobel Laureate Frank Wilczek and physicists Leonard Mlodinow and Brian Keating. In this riveting conversation, co-hosted with Deepak Chopra, physicists Frank Wilczek, author of Fundamentals: Ten Keys to Reality, Leonard Mlodinow co- author with Stephen Hawking of two books, The Grand Design and A Briefer History of Time, and me discuss what we know about the physical world, questions that fundamental science cannot address, and more. Frank Wilczek is world-renowned both as a theoretical physicist and as a writer and speaker on science. He has received many honors for his work, notably including the Nobel Prize. Watch my first video with Frank here: https://youtu.be/3z8RqKMQHe0 Find Frank here: frankawilczek.com Massachusetts Institute of Technology | T.D. Lee Institute & Wilczek Quantum Center Shanghai Jiao Tong University | Arizona State University | Stockholm University. Frank has literary and inventive projects in the works. Frank has an insatiable appetite for puzzles and games. He is also an avid, though mediocre, musician. And he is proud of his family. Wilczek has made seminal contributions to fundamental particle physics, cosmology and the physics of materials. His current research focus includes Axions, Anyons, and Time Crystals. These are concepts in physics which he named and pioneered. Each has become a major focus of world-wide research. In recent years Frank has become fascinated with prospects for expanding perception through technology. He is developing hardware and software tools for this. He has authored several well-known books, and writes a monthly “Wilczek’s Universe” feature for the Wall Street Journal. His latest book, Fundamentals: Ten Keys to Reality will be released on January 12, 2021. LEONARD MLODINOW received his PhD in theoretical physics from the University of California, Berkeley, was an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at the Max Planck Institute, and was on the faculty of the California Institute of Technology. His previous books include the best sellers The Grand Design and A Briefer History of Time (both with Stephen Hawking), Subliminal (winner of the PEN/E. O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award), and War of the Worldviews (with Deepak Chopra), as well as Elastic, Euclid’s Window, Feynman’s Rainbow, and The Upright Thinkers. Do you often find yourself saying that weight loss feels impossible? Maybe you've been struggling with your weight for so long now, that you've almost given up. Or maybe you're like most of my permanent weight loss coaching clients who before working with me, they'd tried everything to lose weight and keep it off, but even if they lost weight, it always came back. Gayle and Sindhu are two great examples of this! Prior to working with me in The Inner Self Dietâ„¢ they BOTH had gotten to their ideal weight in the past, but they could never stay there. Not until they healed the root of their ongoing struggles, to finally put an end to the binge eating and emotional eating. When you go through so many ups and downs with your weight and yo-yo dieting has become your norm, eventually it just ends up feeling like "What's the point?!" because you already expect to fail. I know this because I've been there! This can definitely make weight loss feel impossible. There IS good news however! Once you heal the root of the problem (HINT: that's an Inner Self journey you've gotta take, if you are serious about ending your struggles) then releasing the fat will be a snap. But in the meantime, what do you do when weight loss feels so impossible to DO? What If Weight Loss Feels Impossible? In this episode of  The JoLynn Braley Show  I'll share with you why weight loss feels so impossible for you to accomplish. But please know right now that you're certainly not alone! In fact, I've been saying that the stats show that over 60 million adults in the USA are overweight or obese, and today I learned that I've been stating the wrong facts! The correct stats are OVER 78.6 Million Adults in the USA are now Overweight or Obese. So... you're definitely not alone in your struggles. But wouldn't it be so much more fun to be in the permanent weight loss group? You know, to become one of Those People - those people who can eat just one (instead of the whole box!). But first, you'd need to feel that this is even possible. So go ahead and listen to today's episode of  The JoLynn Braley Show to learn more about why it feels so impossible to you today. It will open your mind to what's really going on! Also get out your pen and paper for this Free Weight Loss Podcast episode of The JoLynn Braley Show as I'll give questions to write down and then write down your answers to. You'll get so much out of this Free iTunes Podcast when you write each question down on paper with pen and then write down your answer. In this week's episode you'll learn: WHY weight loss feels so impossible What is the #1 thing you need to change in order for weight loss to feel possible Why weight loss really isn't hard (and what makes it feel so hard to DO) Simply click the play button on the player on this page and you can listen immediately and learn more about why weight loss feels impossible for you today. Remember: All change begins with awareness. Note: When you take action with  the proven system to permanent weight loss so that you can actually have permanent weight loss, then you'll be experiencing the results instead of just listening to information about it. A good place to start is by raising your level of hope that You Too can have permanent success with your weight.
