Today we're bouncing off our recent conversation with evolutionary biologist, Dr. Michael Lachmann from SFI, and unpacking why the modern definition of life sucks and why it matters. We attempt to construct a more scientific (i.e. less circular) definition of life and take it for a walk in the park. As a test case we examine an inadvertent hypothesis, which stems from Olaf Stapledon's Star Maker, a science fiction work that supposes stars themselves have an interior life and that when they move according to gravity they are simply doing the dance of a school of fishes or drivers on a freeway. We pull out cases where the stars satisfy a scientific definition of life and also problems with the theory. The notion forces us to reconsider the limits of life and its possible forms in the universe. One of the science podcasts I listen to regularly is Astronomy Cast hosted by Fraser Cain and Dr. Pamela Gay. In today's lesson, you'll hear a short excerpt from Episode 705: Water Worlds - Looking for Life Beyond Earth. First you'll hear a clip from their podcast, and then I'll break their speech into shorter fragments so you can listen and repeat. You'll hear that Fraser Cain in particular speaks quite rapidly. It would be hard to repeat at his speed!1- Wherever we find liquid water on Earth, we find life.2- So it makes sense to search for water across the universe, and hopefully, we can find evidence of life.3- But what about worlds which are completely covered in water?4- Oceans, hundreds of kilometers deep. Can there be too much water?5- So this idea of water worlds, I mean, we learned everything we needed to know from that Kevin Costner movie, right?6- No, no, one of the things that I was thinking about preparing for this show 7- is just how magnificently wrong in pretty much every way that movie appears to have been, 8- except from a climate change perspective.9- And really, if you want one thing to be wrong, you want it to be the climate change part that's wrong.10- Yeah, but climate change causes sea levels to rise by a couple of hundred feet in the worst case scenario.Let's listen to the original podcast excerpt again.11- Right, no, that's true. It won't eat the entire planet. There will still be soil.12- The coastlines will be roughly where they were, especially in places that are very mountainous.13- So it won't be hard where you're trying to find evidence of islands.14- No, no. But this idea of water worlds, we know they exist here in the solar system, and so we assume that they're out there.15- So give us sort of like an idea, what is the quintessential water world here in the solar system? You've listened to the original speakers, you've listened to me, and you've had a chance to listen and repeat. Now listen to the original one more time. Remember: you can't listen too much when you're studying a new language!Intro & Outro Music: La Pompe Du Trompe by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Support the showYou can now support my podcasts and classes:Help Barry pay for podcast expenses--thank you!
Have you ever wanted to meet someone from a galaxy far, far away to hang out with? Sadly, we haven't found any evidence of intelligent life beyond Earth, but AI has some answers and ideas. It believes we may not have searched enough. Experts say that we've only explored only 4% of the apparent space. One more idea AI suggested is that intelligence is rare. Jonathan Lunine is the David C. Duncan Professor in the Physical Sciences and Chair of the Department of Astronomy at Cornell University. Lunine is interested in how planets form and evolve, what processes maintain and establish habitability, and what kinds of exotic environments (methane lakes, etc.) might host a kind of chemistry sophisticated enough to be called "life". He pursues these interests through theoretical modeling and participation in spacecraft missions. He works with data from the James Webb Space Telescope, is co-investigator on the Juno mission orbiting Jupiter, and is a team member on the JUICE mission enroute to the Jovian moons, and Europa Clipper to be launched in 2024. Aliens are back on the radar after a US Congressional hearing in the summer that featured former intelligence officer, David Grusch. The US Air Force veteran was once part of a task force created to look into what used to be called UFOs. Mr Grusch gave evidence that caused a sensation in America, claiming that the US military had, for decades, been in possession of crashed UFOs and 'non-human biologics'. His shocking claims were evidence that, whatever their accuracy, both created and reflected a growing and serious debate - from astrophysicists and astrobiologists to policymakers about what if anything, is out there. Anything alive and anything civilised. So, as 2023 turns into 2024, what is the state of our understanding about whether or not we are alone in space? David Aaronovitch explores the history of UFOs stretching back to the 1940s and discusses whether intelligent life exists beyond Earth. Under the mighty radio Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank, Victoria Gill brings together some of the UK's leading experts who were visiting the recent ‘bluedot' science and music festival. They discussed the ongoing hunt for extraterrestrial life. We hear from Karen Olsson-Francis, a microbiologist who focuses on the tiny living things that have managed to occupy Earth's most hostile environments. Her research is helping shape space missions that are looking for evidence of life elsewhere in our solar system. Also on the panel is Libby Jackson, head of space exploration at the UK Space Agency, who specialises in preparing humans for the extremes of interplanetary travel. Finally, we hear from Tim O'Brien, associate director of the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics. He's explored parts of the Universe that no human can travel to by making the most of the radio telescopes based at Jodrell Bank. Get the latest ‘inside' scoop on how the UK is assisting with the search for life beyond Earth. In recent years, scientists have made great strides in the search for extraterrestrial life. They have discovered thousands of exoplanets. And some of them are located in the habitable zone of their star, which means that liquid water could exist on their surface and is essential for life as we know it. The search for life however, is a little more involved than finding planets, measuring their location and distance around the star and figuring out their location within a habitable zone. Astronomers need more information to learn if life may be there. Show Notes Available at https://exoplanetradio.com/science/biosignatures-search-for-life/.

Are we alone in the universe? And are we creating technology that will revolutionize our lives but that we may also not be able to control one day? These are big questions that may have answers fairly soon and Sara investigates both of them in today's podcast. Our federal government is now spending a lot of time and money investigating incidents of unidentified aerial phenomena, or UAP. Reported by members of our military and observed near nuclear sites, these UAP's allegedly do things that cannot be replicated on Earth. So what are they? And if there is other intelligent life beyond our planet, what does it mean? Sara also reacts to a Stanford University professor who thinks extraterrestrials are already among us.Finally, Sara discusses the surging capability and promise of artificial intelligence. Its advancement is only going to accelerate. What will that mean for us? And why is our Pentagon ignoring how our adversaries are developing AI to make their militaries more lethal than ever. Please visit our great sponsors:Allegiance Goldhttps://protectwithsara.comClick or Call 877-702-7272 tell them Sara sent you and get $5,000 of free silver on a qualifying purchase. For centuries, humans have gazed at the night sky and wondered if any intelligent life forms like us might be out there. In 2015, the Breakthrough Foundation gave a $100 million grant to the University of California at Berkeley to undertake the most comprehensive search for signals from an extra-terrestrial civilization. Dr. Steve Croft, of the University of California, Berkeley, SETI Center, describes the project, introduces the many radio telescopes around the world it is using in the search, and explains how modern technology, including AI, is being used to include more stars, more frequencies (channels) and more ways a signal might be sent.

Does life exist beyond the confines of our planet? In 1950, Enrico Fermi conducted a thought experiment where he estimated the number of habitable planets in our galaxy and concluded that the galaxy should be teaming with life. However, no sign of life had been observed despite our search for it. This became known as the Fermi Paradox. In this episode we discuss possible solutions to the Fermi Paradox as the first of several steps on our journey to search for new life in the universe and the possible avenues humanity may be able to transverse as we seek it out. When you hear the staggering statistics that are proving how many billions of other "earth like planets" that exist in the universe, it becomes impossible to believe that other life, and likely intelligent life exists beyond just us. As much as we identify with planet Earth and our terrestrial life here, Edgar Cayce's reading of the Akashic Records and the Universal Consciousness tells a different story. From Cayce's perspective, we were, are, and will be again celestial beings, traversing the vast expanse of space. Our primal mission is to know ourselves and our Creator. Cayce often began readings for individuals by identifying their planetary and stellar influences, explaining that these were influences because of the soul's journeys through those dimensions. Before and after incarnating into this world and physical life, the soul experiences dimensions beyond the earth plane. Edgar Cayce (/ˈkeɪsiː/; 18 March 1877 – 3 January 1945) was an American clairvoyant who claimed, uniquely, to channel his own higher self. During these sessions, Cayce would answer questions on subjects as varied as healing, reincarnation, dreams, the afterlife, past-life, nutrition, Atlantis and future events. Cayce, believed that it was his subconscious mind exploring the dream realm, where he believed minds were timelessly connected. Cayce founded a nonprofit organization, the Association for Research and Enlightenment, to store and facilitate the study of his channelings, as well as run a hospital. A biographer gave him the nickname The Sleeping Prophet. Some consider him the true founder and a principal source of the most characteristic beliefs of the New Age movement. Until September 1923, his readings were not systematically recorded or preserved. However, an article published in the Birmingham Post-Herald on October 10, 1922, quotes Cayce as saying that he had given 8,056 readings as of that date and it is known that he gave approximately 13,000–14,000 readings after that date. A total of 14,306 are available at the A.R.E. Cayce headquarters in Virginia Beach and on an online, member-only section along with background information, correspondence, and follow-up documentation. Other abilities that have been attributed to Cayce include astral projection, prophesying, mediumship, viewing the Akashic records or "Book of Life", and seeing auras. Cayce said he became interested in learning more about these subjects after he was informed about the content of his readings, which he reported that he never actually heard himself. Is there anybody out there? Humankind has been asking this question for millenia, and with the ability to conceive of space travel only being a recent phenomenon, the likelihood of finding an answer to the question has seemed unlikely up till now.But does space travel actually increase the likelihood of finding an answer even remotely? Between the laws of physics and the vast size of the universe, the likelihood of an objective answer goes from zero to zero. So in reality, all space travel has done is given us another way to fantasize about how we might come into contact with life beyond Earth. In this episode, Thom explains the limitations of an objective approach in depth, but he doesn't leave us without hope. Relying on the principle that ‘knowledge is structured in consciousness,' he suggests that the answer might be closer than we think.Episode Highlights: [00:45] SEETI - The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence [02:51] Our Fascination With People from Outer Space[04:56] Is Our Universe Bio-friendly?[06:18] There is Only One Thing[07:17] Unified Field and Quantum Mechanics[09:25] Consciousness is a Property of the One Thing[11:38] This Makes the Mind Boggle[13:12] The Laws of Physics[14:59] Speed of Light[16:40] Infinite Mass in a Speck of Dust[18:28] Ancient Light Visible in the Present[20:22] Challenging the Assumption of Modern Science[21:47] Why Can We See It All?[23:22] The Objective Means of Gaining Knowledge[24:53] How Do I Find Out if I'm Living in a Bio-friendly Universe?[25:54] Inner Space - The Subjective Means of Gaining Knowledge[27:50] The One Caveat - Gaining Knowledge has to be Relevant[29:11] Pure Knowingness on the Level of Being[30:54] Just Like Einstein[32:40] The Product of a Bio-Friendly Trend in the UniverseUseful Linksinfo@thomknoles.com https://thomknoles.com/https://www.instagram.com/thethomknoles/https://www.facebook.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.youtube.com/c/thomknoles https://thomknoles.com/ask-thom-anything/

Have we recently seen prove of alien life from a distant star? Avi Loeb thinks so,and he is one of Harvard University's top astronomers. He argues that a strange object sighted in the skies over Hawaii might be an artificial piece of technology created by a civilisation from outside our solar system. What implications would such a visitation have - for science, for religion, and for the future of our species and our planet?
