Episode 91: The Surprising Inbreaking of God | Reading Matthew 2 with Garret Shelsta My friend, Garret Shelsta is here to remind us to: ✨ Choose to stay curious rather than feel threatened when something new arises ✨ Look for God's fingerprints in the most unexpected places and most unexpected people ✨ Recognize that Jesus, who is the perfect combination of both truth and love, disrupts faulty systems of this world and faulty systems we've constructed in our own lives. We also talk about the fact that God doesn't look for particular boxes to be checked, or for things to be nice and neat in order to pursue us. The God meets us right where we are — no matter how broken, messy, or confused we may be. God's desire is always for us to respond to God's invitation to holy and holistic restoration. —— If you'd like to connect with my guest, Garret Shelsta, you can find him on instagram @gshelsta. Sermons – St John United Methodist Church, Prospect, KY

This week Pastor Ashlee Adkins continues our sermon series “Back to Basics”. We are shifting our focus from fasting to engaging with the Word of God. She shares how God's word changes us by amplifying how to be more Christ-like. When we believe that scripture is inspired by the Holy Spirit and believe in its authority, the Holy Spirit then transforms and changes our lens so we no longer view ourselves by the world's standards, but by God's standards.

This week we're going to talk about why it's a dare in order to be confident. On last week's episode, we talked about why it's a dare to be beautiful. We first began by defining what that word dare means. That word dare means: the courage that is required to do something big. Dare also means to challenge someone to do something that requires boldness. And lastly dare means to confront something boldly. So, why does it take courage and boldness to be confident? Why does it take courage and boldness to hold your heard high and not be so shaken by what others think about you?Ladies, you are in a fight your life, but you're also in a fight for your future. There is a fight against your identity:Meaning the enemy and this culture don't want you to see yourself as God sees you, so they try to get you to believe something that's not true about who you are. There is a fight against your friends. This world and all it has to offer can be enticing and you may see your friends deciding to straddle that line between living for God and living for this world and eventually you may even see them completely abandoning their faith…and it hurts to watch our friends go through this. There is a fight against your schools and the agendas this culture is trying to push that is so against God. There is a fight to make sure there's absolutely no place for God in school.  There is a fight against your value and your worth. We constantly criticize who we are based on what others think. There is a fight against your body image and how you see yourself.Nitpicking everything about us.There is a fight against your purpose. Do we really have a purpose? Why am I here? There is a fight against the people that you are looking to that influence you.So many people are no longer standing for the Truth. There is a fight against your walk with God…Reading the Bible, praying, worship. There is a fight against your time…We're so busy that our head is spinning. There's a fight against your confidence. This world is telling you to be confident in yourself. You've got this! You can do it! However, that's not what God says. Ladies, it's a dare to be confident, because it takes courage and boldness to stand against this culture and say, enough is enough! My confidence comes from the Lord! I am confident in the way I look, because God made me beautifully. I am confident in my walk with God, because He will never fail me. He is always faithful. I am confident in my purpose! God has a plan for my life and it's a good plan!UncommonTEEN Live is less than 2 weeks away and we would love to have you there! Understanding the history, characters, and world events framing the narrative in the Bible helps us gain a deeper understanding and respect for the story being told. Fast Fasting is an ultra-powerful prayer in which you give up physical needs to prioritize your spiritual needs.  To learn more about fasting, check out our previous podcast episode. A fasted prayer could be for anything important to you, whether financial, physical, or emotional. Practice faith Implement the Lord's practice into your life. Follow his commandments, tithe to those who need support, and good things will come back to you. There are countless instances in scripture where we see people who follow the Lord's directions receive the blessing and good fortune they helped others achieve; do the same for yourself! Above all, first, lead with love. If this podcast speaks to you or helps you on your journey to change, let us know by leaving a rating or review. God Lesson 3: If I want MORE OF GOD, I must give God ALL of Me   Why do I want MORE of God? Philippians 3:10 – 14 “I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead. I want to suffer with him, sharing in his death, so that one way or another I will experience the resurrection from the dead… I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.” How do I give God ALL of me? By consistently spending TIME with God Reading the Bible Prayer By learning to DEPEND on God Pray about EVERYTHING! By practicing OBEDIENCE to God John 14:23 “Jesus replied, ‘Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.’ “ Giving God ALL of me is a SACRIFICE Romans 12:1-2 “And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” In order to have more of God, I must be intentional about MAKING ROOM in my life for Him.

The first in our five week series on reading the Bible, this week we wrestle with the story of the Exodus as we seek to read the Bible in our time and learn about the Torah. Our sermon this week is by Mitchell Anderson our student minister. The scripture lesson we engaged with is Exodus 15:1-21. Each week we are also learning from United Church teaching on Scripture. This week's principles are “God calls us to engage the Bible to experience the liberating and transforming Word of God" from The Authority and Interpretation of Scripture and “Scripture is our song for the journey, the living word passed on from generation to generation to guide and inspire, that we might wrestle a holy revelation for our time and place from the human experiences and cultural assumptions of another era. God calls us to be doers of the word and not hearers only" from A Song of Faith.

"Habits can be a tool, a means to an end, or they can become a distraction if we're not careful because they're not the point—God is the point—they're only there to help us pursue God."—Darryl Dash Episode 64 of Spirituality for Ordinary People features an interview with Darryl Dash. Darryl is a pastor and church planter in Toronto with over 25 years of ministry experience, and author of How to Grow: Applying the Gospel to All of Life. He serves as pastor of Liberty Grace Church and also helps equip church planters with FEB Central. Together with his wife, Charlene, he founded Gospel for Life, an online resource designed to help people grow. Key Learnings The gospel needs to be central to our daily living. "Self-help Christianity" (i.e. "just try harder) is the opposite of living with the gospel at the center of life. It is possible that half of our life runs on "auto-pilot." We will do better at connecting with God if we can develop habitual routines - things that we don't need to think about or figure out in the moment. Darryl talks about 3 core practices to lead to deeper connection with God: Reading or listening to Scripture Prayer Engage in Worship and Community in a Church Look for the times in your lives when you have effectively built habits in order to know what you need to have in place to develop habits in the areas or prayer, reading scripture, and participation in Church. In order to develop a habit, make your daily goal so ridiculously small that you are 85% sure you will do it. See B. J. Fogg's website, Tiny Habits, or Mini Habits by Stephen Guise.   Things to Think About What would it look like for you to pray honestly and throughout your day? How might God be calling you to share more deeply within your Church community? What would a helpful habit be for you to connect more with God?   Spiritual Practices Discussed in this Episode Reading or listening to Scripture Prayer Engage in Worship and Community in a Church Having a regular morning routine Having a Rule of Life   Links and Resources: Darryl Dash's website How to Grow by Darryl Dash Gospel for Life   Join others in contributing financially to help pay for hosting and equipment costs.    Follow Spirituality for Ordinary People on Instagram   Subscribe: iTunes | Stitcher | TuneIn Radio | Google Play

More Than a Song - Discovering the Truth of Scripture Hidden in Today's Popular Christian Music

When such a short Psalm reveals so many inspiring characteristics of God, it's worth our time to spend some time in it. This week's song, "Shoulders" by For King & Country, leads us right to Psalm 121. In fact, the song begins by quoting the opening verses of Psalm 121! **This is a repost of Episode #70. I am on vacation in Alaska this week with my family, and I couldn't resist pulling this one out of the archives because of it's reference to "the mountains".** We're going to try something new this week to keep your Bible reading engaging! Let's dive in! On this episode I discuss: Taking a B.I.T.E. out of Scripture - this week's Bible Interaction Tool Exercises include: Reading Scripture out loud Using background music to keep it interesting Ask questions...out loud! (And then write them down in your journal) Psalm 121 The significance of the mountains to the Psalmist Comparing and contrasting the characteristics of home with the characteristics of God Reading individual verses in the parallel setting using BibleHub.com This picture...you'll have to listen to understand! The difference between the Hebrew word for sleep and slumber in Psalm 121:4 Making sense of the idea that the Lord keeps us from all harm If our enemy is relentless, God's mercy is more so   Additional Resources Lyrics Story behind the song - New Release Tuesday This Week's Challenge Pull out Psalm 121 and read it every day. Try reading it in different translations and read it out loud...maybe with some epic background music. Come on! Try it! God isn't stale...your interaction with His Word shouldn't be either! I didn't mention it in the body of the podcast today, but journal your journey! You will be amazed at what will come out when you take time to do that. The Psalmist asked a question...if nothing else, follow the Psalmist's example and ask a few questions.
