Eternity Future: The Glorious New Heaven, New Earth, and the Literal Holy City New Jerusalem After the thousand-year reign of Christ upon this earth and after the final judgment at the Great White Throne, Scripture opens the door to the eternal state. The old order ends completely, and God brings forth a new creation filled with His presence, His glory, and His redeemed people. This is not a vague spiritual realm. It is a real, tangible, physical reality that will last forever. Let us begin by anchoring ourselves in the immediate events that lead into this eternal future. After the thousand years expire, Satan is released for a short time. He deceives the nations one last time. They gather in vast numbers like the sand of the sea to surround the camp of the saints and the beloved city. But fire comes down from God out of heaven and devours them. Then the devil himself is cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet already are. There they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. Immediately following this, John sees the Great White Throne. The One seated upon it causes the earth and the heaven to flee away. There is no place found for them. The dead, small and great, stand before God. Books are opened, including the book of life. Every person is judged according to their works recorded in the books. The sea gives up its dead. Death and hell deliver up their dead. All are judged. Then death and hell are cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. Whoever is not found written in the book of life is cast into the lake of fire. With the judgment complete and the old creation removed, John records the breathtaking vision of what comes next. The New Heaven and the New Earth John writes: “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.” The old heaven and earth do not merely receive a fresh coat of paint. They pass away entirely. The elements melt with fervent heat. Everything built on the foundation of sin and rebellion is dissolved. In its place God creates something entirely new in quality and character—a heaven and earth where righteousness dwells perfectly and permanently. There is no more sea. Throughout the Bible the sea often pictures unrest, chaos, and separation. In this new creation those things are gone. There will be no restless tossing of waves, no vast oceans dividing continents, no symbol of the wicked whose waters cast up mire and dirt. The new earth will be a place of perfect order, perfect stability, and perfect unity under the rule of God. The prophet Isaiah had already seen this coming reality hundreds of years earlier. He declared: “For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind. But be ye glad and rejoice for ever in that which I create: for, behold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy. And I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in my people: and the voice of weeping shall be no more heard in her, nor the voice of crying. There shall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old man that hath not filled his days: for the child shall die an hundred years old; but the sinner being an hundred years old shall be accursed. And they shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them. They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat: for as the days of a tree are the days of my people, and mine elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands. They shall not labour in vain, nor bring forth for trouble; for they are the seed of the blessed of the LORD, and their offspring with them. And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear. The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock; and dust shall be the serpent's meat. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the LORD.” While some aspects of this prophecy find expression during the millennial kingdom, the complete and final fulfillment belongs to the eternal state we are considering now. Grief, frustration, premature death, and the curse upon creation will be remembered no more. The new creation will be a place of unending joy and perfect fulfillment. The Literal Holy City, New Jerusalem, Descending from Heaven John continues: “And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.” This is a real, literal city. It is not an allegory or a symbol for something else. It is a tangible, physical city that descends from the very presence of God. Its preparation is described as that of a bride adorned for her husband—beautiful, pure, radiant, and perfectly suited for the glorious purpose for which it was made. The city itself shines with the glory of God. Its light is like a most precious stone, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal. It radiates the very presence and holiness of the One who created it. An angel carries John in the Spirit to a great and high mountain so he can see this city clearly. The angel says, “Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife.” Then John beholds the city descending out of heaven from God. The Massive Scale and Perfect Design of the City The city is foursquare. Its length is as large as its breadth. John measures it with a golden reed and finds it to be twelve thousand furlongs in length, breadth, and height. Twelve thousand furlongs equals approximately fifteen hundred miles. Picture a city that stretches one thousand five hundred miles from north to south, one thousand five hundred miles from east to west, and rises one thousand five hundred miles into the sky. It is a perfect cube of staggering proportions—larger than any city humanity has ever imagined or built. The wall of the city is measured at one hundred forty-four cubits according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel. This wall is great and high, providing perfect security and separation from anything unholy. The city has twelve gates—three on the east, three on the north, three on the south, and three on the west. At each gate stands an angel. On the gates are written the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel. The wall itself rests upon twelve foundations, and in those foundations are written the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. This design reflects perfect governmental order and divine completeness. The twelve gates and twelve foundations speak of access and stability rooted in God's covenant dealings with His people throughout history. The angels at the gates guard the holiness of the city. Nothing unworthy will ever pass through them. The Breathtaking Materials and Radiant Beauty The building materials of this city are beyond anything known on the present earth. The wall is constructed of jasper. The entire city is pure gold, and this gold is like clear glass—transparent and flawless. The foundations of the wall are adorned with every kind of precious stone in dazzling array: The first foundation is jasper—clear and radiant like the glory of God Himself. The second is sapphire—a deep, heavenly blue. The third is chalcedony—a stone of milky, translucent beauty. The fourth is emerald—a rich, vibrant green. The fifth is sardonyx—layered with bands of red and white. The sixth is sardius—a fiery red stone. The seventh is chrysolite—a golden, transparent gem. The eighth is beryl—a sea-green or blue-green brilliance. The ninth is topaz—a golden yellow that catches the light. The tenth is chrysoprasus—a apple-green stone of rare beauty. The eleventh is jacinth—a violet or reddish-blue gem. The twelfth is amethyst—a deep purple that speaks of royalty and splendor. The twelve gates are each made of a single pearl. Every gate is one enormous pearl. The street of the city is pure gold, transparent as glass. Imagine standing before gates formed from single pearls of unimaginable size. Picture streets of transparent gold that reflect the glory streaming from the throne of God. Picture foundations sparkling with every color of the rainbow in perfect harmony. This is not poetic exaggeration. This is the literal description of the city God has prepared. Its beauty is real, visible, and eternal. The transparency of the gold and the clarity of the jasper reveal a holiness that has nothing to hide. Everything in this city is pure, open, and glorious. No Temple Needed – The Presence of God Fills Everything John notes something remarkable: “And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.” In the old creation, temples and tabernacles were necessary because God's presence was localized and mediated. In this new city, the entire metropolis is filled with the immediate presence of God and the Lamb. There is no need for a separate building. The whole city functions as the dwelling place of God. The Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple. Because of this, the city has no need of the sun or the moon to shine in it. The glory of God lights the city, and the Lamb is its lamp. The light is not created light. It is the uncreated, eternal glory of God Himself radiating through the city. There is no night there. The gates are never shut. There is perpetual day because the source of light never sets. Access for the Redeemed and Perfect Security The nations of them which are saved walk in the light of the city. The kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it. The gates stand open continually. People from every nation and tribe who have been redeemed enter freely and bring the glory and honor of their cultures and peoples into the presence of God. Yet nothing that defiles, nothing abominable, and nothing that makes a lie can ever enter. Only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life have access to this glorious city. God Dwells with His People A loud voice from heaven proclaims the central reality of eternity: “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.” God's presence, once veiled behind curtains and clouds, is now fully and permanently with His people. He dwells among them without any barrier. He Himself wipes away all tears from their eyes. There is no more death. There is no more sorrow. There is no more crying. There is no more pain. The former things—the entire order of sin, curse, and death—have passed away forever. He who sits on the throne declares: “Behold, I make all things new.” These words are true and faithful. It is done. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. He gives the water of life freely to everyone who thirsts. The one who overcomes inherits all things. God becomes his God, and he becomes God's son. In contrast, those who refused grace have their part in the lake of fire—the second death. The River of Life and the Tree of Life in the Heart of the City John is shown the very center of this glorious city: “And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.” A pure river of the water of life flows directly from the throne of God and of the Lamb. It is clear as crystal—perfectly pure and refreshing. On both sides of this river stands the tree of life. It produces twelve different kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. Its leaves bring healing to the nations. This is the complete reversal of the curse pronounced in Eden. In the beginning, man was barred from the tree of life. Now the tree stands openly in the middle of the city's main street, freely available. The river flows from the very throne. There is no more curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb is central to everything. God's servants serve Him with perfect joy and without weariness. They see His face. His name is written in their foreheads as a mark of eternal ownership and security. There is no night. The Lord God gives them light. And they reign forever and ever. The Eternal Reign and God All in All When the millennial kingdom ends and all enemies have been subdued, including death itself, the Son delivers up the kingdom to the Father. All rule and authority are put down. God becomes all in all. The redeemed reign with Christ in this glorious city forever. Their service is joyful. Their worship is perfect. Their fellowship with God and with one another is unbroken and eternal. The former things have passed away. All things are new. The city stands as a real, glorious, physical reality—massive, radiant, secure, and filled with the immediate presence of God. Its streets of transparent gold, its pearl gates, its jeweled foundations, its river of life, and its tree of life will be seen and enjoyed by the redeemed for all eternity. This is the inheritance of those who overcome. This is the home prepared for the people of God. This is the city whose builder and maker is God. The closing words of Scripture call us to readiness: “Behold, I come quickly.” Blessed is the one who keeps the words of this prophecy. The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” Let the one who hears say, “Come.” Let the one who is thirsty come. Whoever will, let him take the water of life freely. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

I've recently been thinking about how thankful I am for America. It is certainly easy to take things for granted and focus on some obvious problems, but if we are willing to look, we can find reasons to thank God for this country.As a Christian our desire should be to live a life that is peaceable, quiet, and biblically faithful life. I know that there are going to be neighbors, coworkers, politicians, and university professors who are out of step with our worldview. This is okay. It's an opportunity. America gives us this opportunity.God graciously has allowed the flame of the gospel to continue to burn—and even flourish throughout our history. We could've been born in a country or region that is unreached. But, as God would have it, he has graciously allowed us to be born and raise our children here where evangelists roam the streets and sit in office cubicles. America certainly has her bad moments, but this is a too often overlooked virtue. And it's an important one.Now as a Sunday School teacher I think about how thankful I am that we can assemble freely as a church while declaring our loyalty to and longing for our Soon Coming King. We are able to boldly preach and teach the Word of God without fear of being thrown in jail. This is a gift not shared by our brothers and sisters in every country.As a church, we regularly pray for and zealously pursue opportunities to plant and strengthen churches. Thank God we live in a country where this is possible. We can openly train, plan, and pursue the establishment of more churches.I am also thankful for the overall pursuit of peace, justice, and security. I know things are not perfect, and there are obvious limitations in each of these categories. But when we look around the world and throughout history, we who live in the United States are extremely blessed to live here and now.Our country is not perfect (far from it). We will certainly not be homesick when we tread upon the streets in the Celestial City. But living in America is an occasion for us to thank God, praise God and to use this time and season to give God ALL the Glory, for Great things He has done!. The most important things in this world are the church and our family. We need to be grateful to God that as of now both are able to be cared for and given opportunity to flourish.As America turns 250 years old we remember this:Considering where our trust is established: Ps 20: 7 Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.Remembering where our help comes from: Ps. 121: 2 My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.May God Bless America and lead us to give God all the Glory. Jeff Willis

Wehave been studying Ephesians chapter 4, where the Apostle Paul teaches that weare to live differently than we once did. Why? Because a new man has enteredour lives. That new man is none other than Jesus Christ Himself, living in usthrough the person and work of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit now dwellswithin us, giving us a new life—a life that can walk in righteousness and dothe things that please God. Paulbecomes very practical in this section, telling us what it means to put off theold man. In Ephesians 4:25, he begins by saying: “Therefore, putting awaylying, "Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor," for weare members of one another.”  Here,Paul emphasizes the importance of truth. Youmay remember the moment when Pilate stood before Jesus and asked, “What istruth?” Just before that question, Jesus had declared in John 18:37: “Pilatetherefore said to Him, "Are You a king then?" Jesus answered,"You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for thiscause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth.Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice." That brings to mind Johnchapter 10, where Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, andthey follow me.” To follow Jesus is to follow truth. To know the truth, wemust have a personal relationship with the truth—because Jesus is the truth. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Wordwas with God, and the Word was God… All things were made by him.” “And the Word was made flesh,and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begottenof the Father,) full of grace and truth.” Hereis John—a simple fisherman from the region of the Sea of Galilee—testifying, “Wehave met the truth. We have seen His glory.” He echoes this again in 1 Johnchapter 1, declaring that they had heard, seen, and touched the Word of life. Thistruth is none other than Jesus Christ—God in the flesh. John tells us that Hisglory was full of grace and truth. God reveals Himself as the source of alltruth. Jesus later said in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and thelife.” When Pilate asked, “What is truth?” the answer, Jesus Christ,Truth Himself was standing right in front of him. TheBible teaches that we are born speaking lies. Psalm 58:3 says, “The wickedare estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speakinglies.” Jeremiah 17:9 tells us that the heart is deceitful above all thingsand desperately wicked. Our natural hearts are part of the old man, the oldnature, and “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matthew12:34). So how can you tell the difference between someone who follows Jesusand someone who does not? A follower of Jesus speaks the truth, believes thetruth, and loves the truth. Where is truth found? Truth is found in JesusChrist. Where is Christ found? In the Word of God.  Thegreatest lie ever told was spoken by Satan in the Garden of Eden, when he toldEve, “You shall not surely die… you shall be like God, knowing good andevil.” In other words, “Follow your heart.”  You hear that message everywhere today, but itis not biblical. The Bible does not say, “Follow your heart.” Jesus said,“Follow me.” And when you follow Jesus, you follow the truth. Satan is still whisperingthis lie in our ears today. “You can decide what is right or wrong. Do what makesyou feel good. You don't need God”.   Thatis why Jesus said He was born, “to bear witness to the truth”. When you knowthe truth—when you know Jesus—you can speak the truth to your neighbor. Truthbuilds up; lies tear down. Truth strengthens fellowship; lies destroy it. MayGod help us understand this: Jesus is the Truth. Let us love Him, live for Him,and speak His Truth. When you speak the truth, you bear witness to JesusChrist! And if you have never received Him into your life, I encourage you todo so this Christmas Eve.

John 8:56-58, “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.” So the Jews said to Him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?" Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am." Jesus implied that if they were Abraham's children, they would see that Jesus was the fulfillment of the promise Abe looked forward to. Here's what Abe saw and rejoiced in. Hebrews 11:10, 13 “For he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God…All these died in faith, without receiving the promises, but having seen them and having welcomed them from a distance, and having confessed that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.” The question for us is this: Have we seen Jesus' day and rejoiced in it? If so, we also consider ourselves strangers and aliens on the earth as we wait expectantly for the city God has built for us. The Jew's response was their way of saying, "There is no way you could know that about Abraham!" They had no idea who they were talking with. If they had known Jesus was God, they would have hung on to every word He spoke. So it is with everyone who believes Jesus is God, the light, the life, and the source of living water. May all who read these words hang on to everything He has said. Jesus left no doubt as to who He is. He is the eternal, coexisting, almighty Son of God who took on flesh. If Jesus isn't God in the flesh, this statement makes Him appear deluded or, to the Jews, it makes Him a blasphemous imposter worthy of death. What is our takeaway from His declaration? Jesus' life is eternal life, so the life we have in us is eternal. We who believe in Him will never die. He came in the flesh so that His death would become our death, and His eternal life become ours—a life whose nature is love. I invite you to become a partner in our ministry. Scripture: Exodus 20:8-11, Deuteronomy 6:4-9, Jeremiah 6:16, Matthew 11:28-30, Mark 2:27-28, Colossians 2:16-17, Romans 14:5, Romans 12:1-2, 2 Timothy 3:16-17, 1 Colossians 3:16, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.” Exodus 20:8. Is going to church what this commandment is about? Or is there something deeper than simple church attendance? Is this command requesting Compliance with an order without the Comprehension of who God is? How do we “remember” the Sabbath Day? By worshiping and praising and acknowledging God as our Lord, King and Savior. However, some have a false understanding of worship. In the Old Testament they see worship as attending Saturday Synagogue and in the New Testament they see it as attending Sunday Church.  The Sabbath is all about RESTING - let's take a dig into what resting means and is. Jeremiah 6:16 says, “Stand at the crossroads and look: ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.” Rest for one's soul is found in God, in His truth, in who He is, in what He has done. Jesus says the same things in Matthew 11:28-30, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” True rest is not found in a building - it is found in Him - in a relationship with the Living God.  Digging deeper into the command, “Remember the Sabbath Day.” The Resurrection of Jesus was on a Sunday. While many in Jesus' day went daily to the temple to Praise God for what Jesus had accomplished in the resurrection, Sundays became their sabbath and each Sunday was a mini Resurrection Day celebration in honor of Christ's victory of the grave. In Colossians 2:16-17 we read: “Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.” This verse tells us it's not about worshiping God on a specific day or way. This verse tells us that  Jesus is the genuine Sabbath!  Rest is found in Christ! He is rest. In Him is rest.  Rest is a precious gift found in Christ. Mark 2:27-28 tells us, “Then Jesus said to them, ‘The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.'” Even though the New Testament day of worship became a Sunday for believers in Jesus, Romans 14:5 tells us that God does not command us to set aside one particular day - though we are free to do that - like we continue today to gather together on Sunday's in memory of Jesus' resurrection. But that doesn't mean we all have to do that - in fact the New Testament doesn't say to worship on any specific day of the week.  What we are told is to worship God ALL the time; worshiping Him with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our strength, and with all our mind and worshiping, praising and thanking Him in all situations  Jesus tells us that He is the one who is rest and who brings rest. How do we practice the command to “remember,” how do we do what we are called by God to do? Here are some New Testament Essentials:     ⁃    We are called to worship - worship is to be a life-style, it's the way we live. “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” Romans 12:1 Daily worship is the heart of our lives - relationship with Him brings forth worship.     ⁃    We are to be in God's Word - allowing it to transform us - to be made new in Christ. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 tells us, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”  We are to allow the Word of God to be part of our lives and to allow His Word to change our lives.     ⁃    We are to practice godly Wisdom. Colossians 3:16 “Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.”  We also worship God when we wisely take care of our bodies. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says, “ Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” God calls us to rest - Jesus is Rest - Resting in Him is something that is good for our souls, our hearts, our bodies and our minds.  We aren't to go through the motions of rest one day a week - that's RITUAL. We are to live in Him and for Him daily - as a RESPONSE to who He is: Our place of rest because He is our gift of salvation. St. Augustine said it well: “You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they find rest in You.” Now What? In Genesis we are reading of Moses' encounters with Pharaoh and today we saw Moses' demand “We must go three days journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to the LORD our God as he tells us” [Ch.8 v.27] Over the next few days we will read of the drama of the plagues: we pondered the example of Pharaoh's tactic of first agreeing and then denying Moses' requests, so Moses says, “let not Pharaoh cheat again …” [v.29] Egypt had come to depend, we conclude, on the enslaved Israelites as a really significant factor in their economic well-being: this compares with today as a most important factor in decision making processes of Governments; but it rarely leads to the wisest decisions, especially in this godless world.  .As we read through Exodus we learn about the whole system of worship which God gave to the people starting with the ten commandments.  With the “mountain smoking” and  thunder and lightning “Moses said to the people, ‘Do not fear, for God has come to test you, that the fear (awe) of him may be before you, that you may not sin.” [8 v.18,20] A system of sacrifice and offerings for sin is then instituted. This largely revolved around the sacrifice of animals, however in most cases these then became food for the priests and the people. Sadly, as the years passed their spiritual perception and service to their God and of his wondrous deliverance of them from slavery faded: sacrifice became more and more a ritual.In the New Testament we have the ultimate sacrifice – that of God's Son – our Lord.  The first converts on the day of Pentecost “were cut to the heart” [Acts 2 v.37] But did that “sacrifice” of heart last?  Our chapter today in Romans (12) sees Paul making an impassioned plea about this.  The chapter starts, “I appeal to you therefore brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God …”All that those trying to be genuine believers – do, say and even think – needs to arise from an earnest desire to be such a sacrifice.  Notice how Paul puts it; to “be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God” [v.2].  We must not fall into the trap of creating rituals to keep and follow similar to the pattern that later developed in the wilderness; rather, as we read in Hebrews 9 v.14, “how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God” and make us into “a living sacrifice” having an active purified conscience.
