I have a 2015 jku that I'm building/saving to build and it's great to be able to tune in and get educated before dropping that kind of coin. I also wanted to rag on Greg a little bit because it cracks me up how much he says, "and all that fun stuff" and "quote unquote"! I think Jeff and Forest should have a clicker or something to keep track of how many times an episode, and Greg should have to pay a nickel for every one. Not sure what you guys would do with the boat loads of change, but if you can't think of anything I'd be happy to put it towards my build lol. Anyway just wanted check in, I'm a first time emailer. Smittybilt Everyman Challenge and 4500-4800 races throughout the season are our limited classes! Here’s a step-by-step guide to help make it happen! 1.Make sure your vehicle meets our tech rules and you have proper safety equipment. There are three classes racing in the EMC which runs on a modified course the day before KOH itself. Classes are Stock (4600), Modified (4500) and Legend (4800). You do not need to pre-qualify for the EMC but your vehicle must meet the tech and safety requirements outlined here: http://ultra4racing.com/racers/rulebook/. See Section 6.3 for Stock, Section 6.4 for Modified, and Section 6.4.11 for Legend. 2. Create a driver profile at www.ultra4racing.com/races and register. You have a couple of options when registering for the race, specifically whether to commit to signing up for an entire Regional Series as well as KOH or not. If you choose to sign up for a Series as well as KOH, you will receive significant savings throughout the year compared to those who enter race by race. See the race entry pages for more information. The race registration process is straight forward, but should you get stuck, we have created these step-by-step registration instructions. If you already registered to race with ULTRA4 before, please use the same login and password. If you have any questions registering, please email Shannon Welch at Shannon@ultra4racing.com 3. Pay for your race The address to send checks to and online payment options are all available once you have registered online and signed up for the event. 4. Sign up for USAC Insurance All drivers and co-drivers MUST have either annual or single use USAC insurance purchased. Pre-purchasing your USAC insurance online saves tons of time on site. Costs are still being determined and will be emailed to already registered drivers once they are known. 5. Be prepared for additional mandatory costs At KOH there will be additional mandatory costs (including USAC insurance mentioned above) including but not limited to: IRC trackers, pit crew bands, tech fee (included in an annual USAC membership, or charged separate if not paying for an annual USAC membership). Payment and pricing for these costs will be emailed to you as they are known. 6. Show up and race! See you soon. Pending you had a 10K budget, how would you build your rig? Announcements: Main Topic: Wearable Parts Jeff and I have always preached maintenance for your rig. Well, what does that mean? What needs maintaining? What are parts that will last a long time, but need attention every once in awhile vs a part that might need maintenance once a year? What do I need to monitor on my rig? Jeff seems to have had some serious issues that he has discovered. Luckily he found them before the where major problems. Budgeting for rebuilds and repairs? Sounds like Jeff needs to upgrade to a HP Dana 70 front or build a custom 14 bolt front. What brand gears is he running that he keeps chipping teeth off of? Listener Feedback: Send us your questions and comments!!! podcast@highsierra4x4.com Hi guys love the show and the addition of Forrest hope everything's going great. I particularly loved the episodes you did on overlanding and off-road trailers. Would love to hear more content on overlanding in general. Have you guys thought about an episode on roof top tents? I'm in the market right now and have been considering the local brands like CVT and Tepui. Any suggestions? Do you guys run a RTT? Thanks again keep up the great work. Nick K. Thread of the Week Rattling sound from my jeep! my 2011 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited started making this rattling sound a few days ago. The sound reminds me of a baseball card on a bike spoke. The first day the sound started in was only when pressing the accelerator and now 2 days later it's only when idling. i haven't got to do much investigating yet to attempt to find out where exactly the sound is coming from but I'm doing that tomorrow morning. I am pretty much clueless when it comes to automotive stuff but I'd really like to change that. Anyone had something similar happen and maybe have some advice? What's up Jeff? What’s up Forrest? What’s up Greg? CB Installed, thanks Jeff. Tuning it? Hate Mail!! Sorry to break your hearts, but this really isn't hate mail - just having some fun and busting your chops. I listen to your podcast on my phone using Stitcher. I really enjoy listening to you guys. I wanted to shoot you an e-mail and add to the automatic transmission conversation. One thing you guys didn't touch on is how the first gear in an automatic really isn't fixed. For example the JK's WA580 (also known as the NAG1) automatic has a 3.59 first gear ratio. However, the effective first gear ratio is actually between 6.46 and 8.97 because of the viscous coupling of the torque converter. The only time the stated gear ratio on an automatic holds true is when the converter is in lock up. There is some good reading in the below link. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torque_converter One last thing. If I remember correctly, I think Jeff kept saying automatics had belts in them. This is not correct, I believe the word Jeff really meant was bands. Old automatics did use bands with friction pads. The new automatics like the WA580 do not use bands. They are hydraulically actuated and use electronically controlled solenoids for their operation. Regards, John Announcements: Main Topic: Transfer Case Well, if you’re into four wheeling at all, at some point, you’ve thought about your transfer case. What does it do? How does it do it? What’s the benefit of upgrading your transfer case? What kind of upgrades should I do? Gearing? What’s a doubler or dual cases? Is there a difference? When should I gear vs dual cases? How about an aftermarket transfer case? What does twin stick mean? Listener Feedback: Send us your questions and comments!!! podcast@highsierra4x4.com Important to note that NV gear is out of business. As the 3500 becomes harder to find used the similarly rated AX15 is still available new. Other than the early jeep and bronco 4 speeds I think you covered the big manuals to be worried about. As to auto's I think the popular Jeep slush-boxes being the AW4, 32RH and 42RLEs deserve mention. AW4 was found in XJ cherokees with the 4.0L engine. Great transmission if you keep it cool. Not as efficient as modern units but it was also used in v8 landcrusers so it somewhat underrated behind the 4.0. Add a transmission cooler and they last 200k miles. Jeepspeed guys thrash these things so there is decent aftermarket support for them. 32RH was a 3 speed unit found in early 4.0L TJs. Durable transmission based on the 1970s 3 speeds that sat behind V8s. Lack of an overdrive hurts dual purpose rigs on the highway. Dead simple hydraulically controlled auto is great for dedicated trail rigs and no computer to worry about. 42RLE was a 4 speed unit found in ZJs, later TJs, and 3.8 JKs. Generally regarded as a "meh" transmission. Odd shifting and so-so reliability. One place manuals have a distinct advantage is deeper snow wheeling. Auto's will build heat at slow speeds where a manual has no slipping to generate heat and no cooler that can get airflow blocked by packed snow. Manuals have a disadvantage in terms of stress on the rest of the drivetrain. An auto will reduce shock loads to the drivetrain as the transmission is an indirect link at low speeds. Autos generally wont notice slop in the drivetrain like a manual will pronounce. Kris

From Dusty at Advance Adapters: We do not offer a Rubicrawler for 2012 and newer due to changes Jeep made in the running gear. We do offer Atlas transfer case for newer models to help lower your crawl ratio. Thanks, Dusty" I ended up getting a rubicon transfer case off ebay which I'll be swapping out the 2.72 t-case for a better rock crawling set up. I'm currently on stock D30/D44 set up (trussed and gussetted) and 35's but the near term plan is the the Ultimate D60's and 40's Was hoping I could have used the RubiCrawler rather than swapping out t-cases for either a rubicon or an Atlas, but nope. Announcements: March Giveaway Main Topic: Tire Time!!! Listener Feedback: Hey everybody, I was hoping to get some information on what tires to go with next. I'm currently running Cooper Discoverer STT 35/12.50R17 on Fuel wheels. I know I definitely want to move to 37s cause my JK Rubicon has 6 inches of lift and the 35s just look too small in my opinion. So far my first choice is the Goodyear MTR with Kevlar. I've read some good reviews online on those and I was just wondering what you guys thought of them. Anyone currently running them in 37s? Also do they make them in a 37/13.50? Or just 37/12.50? I'm open to suggestions as well to other tires so any info would be great. Mainly looking for true to size with good road manners due to the JK being my daily driver. Thanks for any help! Why buy a Rubicon? Listener Feedback: Send us your questions and comments!!! podcast@highsierra4x4.com The brothers Bakken have been bringing up the dealerships up some lately so I thought I'd talk a bit from the other side. First off dealerships are like cops, doctors and lawyers, most are good but a few turds will ruin the punch. I've been in the auto industry since I started work at 16. Started in parts for 6 yrs worked my way to service for another 6 yrs at a large dealership conglomerate and now have been installing transmissions at the Super Duty plant for the past 17. So like a Kardashian I've been around I'll start with the power steering issue. Once you buy the vehicle Jeep is a customer just like yourself, they have to pay the dealership for the parts and repairs. Throwing parts at a problem gets expensive just like it would be for customer pay. Most problems have a trouble tree for the tech to follow. Often the problem with leaks is the fluids are so similarly colored now with the use of synthetics and such tight packaging it's hard to tell the origin unless its a major failure. The guidelines they have to follow dictate the dye at that point. It's aggravating coming back but it will MOST times aid in getting the correct fix. Most times a reflash is actually a computer update not just a code clear. Just like your home pc updates are put out often to keep emissions in check. It could be as simple as a timing change for certain regions. Contrary to belief the tech wants it fixed right the first time as well, they don't get paid for bring backs. They also don't mind the warranty although it pays less. The manufacturer will pay but the customer may choose otherwise. Don't be afraid to ask to talk to your tech, you both have your vehicle in common and have something at stake. Sometimes its like the telephone game, you tell the service writer one thing but it translates differently on the work order. The tech may have seen a similar problem many times and a few key questions/answers may get it diagnosed quicker and more accurately. Also sometimes it just doesn't act up while the tech has it. Many times I called the customer personally to talk it out,ask questions about when its cold, rainy, after a long drive etc to better my odds of getting it fixed. Having your vehicle inop is stressful for sure, but try to take a deep breath and calmly talk to your writer. If its the first time for the problem give them a chance to fix it. They want you happy and coming back as well. Customer loyalty is everything to the manufacturer's. Loyalty pays off for you as well. If you have your oil or other services done for you take it back to the dealership. Most times they are pretty competitive to the quick lubes. If you happen to have a problem outside of warranty it's much easier to get it covered if you have a long history of factory care for your car. I've seen a car have a major repair covered 10k out of warranty because they were on their 5th Cadillac and had always had all their service done with us.

What's up Jeff? Jeep is back? Announcements: January Giveaway Main Topic: Body Armor Continued How do you prioritize what you buy or make first? This will all come down to personal preference, but I think there are a few things to consider. What trails do you plan to tackle in your immediate future? What are the conditions of those trails? Rocky, muddy, fire roads, jagged rock...Etc. If you have a stock Rubicon, and you plan to take it through the Rubicon, you will definitely want some armor before you go. Often times, you will find that Body Armor and recovery points go hand and hand. Bumpers have shackle tabs or hooks built into them. Rock sliders become Hi Lift points. Roll cages become places to attach straps to help keep you up right in a hairy situation. Because, most runs you ever go on, one of the first requirements will be for your vehicle to have recovery points. The factory stuff is often times junk!! So, most likely, the first piece of armor you buy will be front and rear bumpers. Thread of the Week: Suggested Thread of the Week! Long Arms on a daily driver? More Flex? More bump compliance Smooth out the ride Speed Is stability an issue? Listener Feedback: Hey guys, I just wanted to drop an email and tell you that I am really enjoying the podcast. What's up Jeff? Announcements: January Giveaway Main Topic: Body Armor You’ve spent tons of money on your rig to prepare it for your off road adventure!! You're planning to head out into the middle of nowhere and you want to be as prepared as possible. You need to protect your investment not only from the terran you are tackling but also protect yourself from possible breakage!! How can you we do this? Things to consider… Weight The heavier it is, the stronger it may be, but that can have other side effects...Heavier rig means more upgrades, stiffer suspension, more body roll, etc. Material Aluminum, steel or tin foil? This is where the balancing act of weight vs strength comes into play. Lighter means weaker. Clearance Bumpers vs tires, skid plates, diff covers, driveline skid plates/pinion skid plates, diff skid plates, rock sliders, bumper clearance… Frame mounted vs body mounted. Rock sliders, roll cages, fender flares... Do you really need it? Listener Feedback: Really enjoyed "family rig" episode. Great points of needs and wants. I've thought a lot about this and have a couple additions. Age; being comfortable and able to wheel for a long day and not feel beat up. Modifications; you're farther from home, and your wheeler buddy support, so being able to source stock parts out of town would be important to get you home. How about dual use using an overland trailer? Opens up a whole new discussion. My list was: jeep 4 door ( just to many of them around, Chevy mini blazer ( just not enough room), dodge Dakota ( was a serious option, but research found a weak steering), what I ended up choosing was a Hummer H3. I found a truck version and am very happy with it. V8 motor, decent aftermarket support, GM parts avaliable. Now I'm building an overland trailer to go with it. The downside- IFS, and it's expensive. Listener Feedback: I'm the guy who wants to run no spare rim but here is my story..... Buddy bought a set of "custom" beadlocks, they were trailready do yourself locks that were put on pretty nice rims. I don't even think he ran them before I bought them off him. There were only 4, I don't know what they started as and i'm normally a guy who wants a spare.... However getting a matching spare was going to be hard enough then there was the issue of new lock and installing it. I got thinking about the dead weight that wheel adds to my rig and money that getting another would take and decided that by building a square box that the 15" tire would fit over I could have storage space. B building it myself i'd be into it very little money, create more storage and still have a spare, seemed like a cool way to do it. yes swapping a tire on the trail wouldn't be the fastest way to do it but I'd ask to use someone else's spare if they had one that would work handy, then swap my good spare onto my rim when we got to camp or out. I do however carry electric impacts and this DIY kit allows me to push the tire right on by hand and not have to fight with a bead so breaking the back bead, taking off 18 bolts and putting it back together would be all it took to get it going. Yes time consuming but how often do most of us get flats on brand new tires? Id say not often enough for the work to be a frequent pain in the arse. As for the DIY, my jeep isn't my DD, but it's also not a trail only trailered rig. If it's just me and the fiancée going somewhere within an hour drive we take it. if dirt roads are involved I take it, and I always take it hunting. It def sees a lot of driving, I have a small shimmy at 45 that was there before the beadlocks and has increased a little now but other than that I have no issues. I do run dynabeads and did the dismounting with a buddy's tire machine then mounted myself and didn't have to worry about balancing due to the beads. I loctited all of the bolts and will maintain them and have no issues in my mind running them down the highway. However, these deficiencies can be avoided by purchasing a Ram 1500 with the engine and optional equipment you want. What cannot be overcome is the 2011 Ram 1500 received only a three star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and in a frontal crash the rating drops to an unacceptable two stars. The first sign of an impending failure is a slight tick at idle, as the problem worsens owners complain of a noticeable loss of power. Engines running rich will clog catalytic converters and trigger check engine light illuminations; repairs are expensive. Ran across your meals for #34 podcast. I backpack a lot and here are a couple of meals that I think would be great on your next 4x4 Trip as well. I smoke a pork butt ahead of time and freeze it into the portion size I want in vacuum sealed bags then either warm it in a non stick skillet or you can simply just put the bag right in boiling water and bring the meat up to temperature. Bring some buns, chips and bbq sauce and you have a great and quick meal. The other meal I really enjoy is tortilla pizzas. Non stick pan again. I always use my backpacking stoves to cook even when I am truck camping. They don't take up much room, they are lightweight and easy to use. You put the stove on low heat with butter in the pan and then your tortilla. I usually build my pizza on my plate first. Tortilla, sauce, meat of choice then fine grated cheese. Cook till the cheese is melted. Very yummy for sure! I'll include some pictures of my Tacoma, smoked pork butt and Tortilla Pizzas. Thanks for the great info!
