Today we have a 2022 New Year's Episode with the Bourbon Taters Josh Judy and Tyler Aitken. The three of us met waiting in line for bourbon and became fast friends. We've known each other for about two years now, but it feels like we've known each other for more like a decade. I wanted to do a new years episode as an excuse to get together and drink with the boyos. I definitely needed some relative rehab after the holidays. Please enjoy our ramblings as we pour some bourbon. Josh grew up in West Virginia in a small town. He played college baseball at Indiana Tech from 2004 to 2007. He was drafted into the MLB by the Cleveland Indians in 2007 during the 34th round of the draft. The Indians sent him to play in the Gulf Coast League (aka Rookie Ball) for a few years to develop his skills enough to play professional baseball. Josh made his professional debut on May 25th, 2011 against the Cincinnati Reds. Josh has played baseball all over the world including the United States and Mexico. Josh is now retired from the game of baseball after 16 years as a professional in the MLB. Tyler grew up in Akron Ohio. Tyler enjoys cigars and bourbon. He recently got engaged to his lovely fiance Megan and they look to buy their first house in the near future. Tyler is very close with his family. In his opinion there is nothing more important than family. If you want to contact the show you can go to https://www.uncensoredhumanity.com/ and fill out the Contact Us form. Today we have back with us Mr. Josh Judy. Josh was a pitcher for the Cleveland Indians in the MLB. Josh and I met under interesting circumstances and have become fast friends. This is the second time I sat down with Josh to talk about his professional baseball career. The first episode (#79) we talked about him getting drafted after college and making his debut in the major league for the Cleveland Indians. In this episode we talked about his long and amazing career as a professional pitcher. Josh pitched all over the country and in Mexico and the Dominican Republic. Josh has had many setbacks and triumphs in his crazy professional career. I was on the edge of my seat the whole way through our conversation. In the 2017-2018 season of the Dominican Winter League Josh and his team the Aguilas Cibaeñas beat their arch rivals the Licey Tigres winning the Dominican Winter League Championship. After winning the championship the Aguilas Cibaeñas had the opportunity to represent the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean World Series. Josh grew up in West Virginia in a small town. The Talkin’21 podcast welcomes Pittsburgh Pirates manager Derek Shelton who in his first year as manager of the Buccos made history on September 9, 2020. Under the auspices of MLB, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Clemente Family, Derek strongly believed in wanting to see the annual Roberto Clemente Day celebration become a bit more meaningful and what occurred was groundbreaking. For the first time since 1972, the Pirates team honored “The Great One” by wearing his uniform number. HEAR the “behind the scenes” discussion leading up to the entire team wearing that iconic number, along with how Derek (who grew up a Orioles fan) learned the game from his father and how he impacted his life. Also being a part of the Yankees organization during his years as a Gulf Coast League manager including his “Boss” the legendary George Steinbrenner and his thoughts on Game 6 of the 2020 World Series and how the baseball world reacted to the manager’s decision to remove his starting pitcher. But he’ll also tell our listeners - Retire 21.
Brad Case is a rapidly rising prospect in the Pittsburgh Pirates minor league system. He survived the Gulf Coast League to go on and shove for the Greensboro Grasshoppers and the Bradenton Marauders. When COVID-19 derailed what should have been a promotion to Double-A, Case launched "The Minor League Take," a show where pros candidly share their stories of hope and perseverance with younger players. Pitcher Brad Case has been on a steady climb through minor league baseball since the Pittsburgh Pirates selected him in the 2018 MLB Draft. The right-hander from New York was with the High-A Bradenton Marauders and had a shot to crack into Double-A with the Altoona Curve when COVID-19 derailed his 2020 MiLB season. We talk about his development as a pitcher, his time at NCAA Division-II Rollins College, his Major League Baseball Draft experience, his time in the Gulf Coast League and a whole lot more. The 2020 season marks Reid Ryan's 8th season with the Houston Astros. Reid, 48, served as the Astros president of business operations from 2013 through 2019. This season Reid moves into the role of executive advisor, utilizing his 22 years of professional baseball experience and sharing that with Astros executives. Reid's tenure as Astros president included 5 consecutive years of breaking the franchise's all-time revenue high watermark and moving into the upper echelon of MLB's most successful clubs. Before joining the Astros, Reid was the founder and CEO of both the Corpus Christi Hooks and the Round Rock Express minor league franchises, both of which are perennially lauded as two of the top franchises in minor league attendance, stadium satisfaction and franchise value. Shortly after coming on board in Houston, Reid helped to bring the Corpus Christi Hooks into the fold as an owned and operated affiliate of the Houston Astros. The Round Rock Express, as of 2019 is now the Triple A affiliate of the Houston Astros. Reid's history with Texas baseball goes back decades. During the 1980s, Reid was a batboy for the Astros while his father and Hall of Famer Nolan was an All-Star pitcher in the Astrodome. He later pitched at the University of Texas and TCU, playing a part in two Southwest Conference Titles (Texas '91, TCU '94). Reid went on to pitch in the minor leagues for two seasons (1994-95) in the Rangers system after being selected in the 17th round of the June 1994 Draft. A long-time respected member of minor league baseball's leadership group, Reid has maintained his ownership interests in the Pacific Coast League's Round Rock Express. He currently serves as the Gulf Coast League (rookie ball class A) Board of Trustees representative and is a member of the finance committee for minor league baseball. Reid is involved in several other business ventures including R Bank, a Texas-based community bank chartered in Round Rock, Texas, for which he serves as a founding board member and organizer. Reid is an active member of the Houston chapter of Young Presidents Organization, on the board of the Greater Houston Partnership, Central Houston Inc., the Astros Foundation and is a board member for Spring Spirit Baseball. Ryan is also a member of Second Baptist Church Houston. His passions include spending time watching his kids play youth sports and spending time at the Ryan family ranch. He and his wife Nicole are the proud parents of one son, Jackson (20), and two daughters, Victoria (18) and Ella (15). The Ryan family lives in Houston. What you'll learn about in this episode: Why Reid embraces his opportunity to work in professional baseball as an honor and a privilege and how that results in bringing joy to his organization's members and customers' lives. How Reid saw joining the Houston Astros as President of Basketball Operations after the club had back-to-back-to-back 100 loss seasons as perfect timing, which allowed him to tear the franchise down to the studs and rebuild it into a World Series Champion. Why he is so intentional about looking at problems from everyone's perspective and how that helps Reid make strong decisions that are fair to everyone. How he went about making sure that the Astros delivered what they said they were going to deliver to the fans and doing it the way they said it would be done. How important it was for Reid to study the past failures of other groups who tried to bring a minor league team to the Austin area and how that helped him successfully start his own club in Round Rock. How he created a compelling vision for the people of Round Rock during the process of securing a home for the team he purchased from Jackson, MS. How they created a major league stadium on a minor league scale. What Reid looks for in people during the hiring process. Welcome to UnforMETable, an Amazin’ Avenue Audio show that looks back on less heralded, more obscure, but quintessential Mets players from the past. As the Mets are streaking in real life, we look back at a young outfielder who burst onto the scene with the the Mets in 1975. Mike Vail seemed like the next big thing as he quickly set a team record—and tied a National League record—with a 23 game hitting streak. Hear about Vail’s memorable streak, the notable Met figure who was traded to clear space for Vail in the outfield, and his slow flameout from phenom to former Met. You’ll also learn about Vail’s intriguing roommate from the Gulf Coast League, who went on to make a (different) name for himself in another realm of sports entertainment.
