I'll take any opportunity to call out diet culture BS when I see it. The recent Washington Post article “As obesity rises, Big Food and dietitians push ‘anti-diet' advice” has quite frankly p*ssed me off, and I want to talk about it with you! There is a large systemic issue at hand when it comes to Intuitive Eating, Health At Every Size (HAES), and weight-inclusive non-diet work. Biased publications, like the Washington Post, are spreading ignorant and misinformed information about what “anti-diet” really means.  This makes me the most frustrated because I can only imagine how confusing it must be to see headlines like this when you are someone who is trying to pursue your relationship with food & body healing journey. So in this episode, I want to set the record straight. Let's dive into some big myth busting about anti-diet work!  I chat with you about: The recent Washington Post article on “anti-diet dietitians”  What people often get wrong when they think about anti-diet or intuitive eating How anti-diet does NOT mean eating twinkies in unlimited amounts Anti-diet DOES mean improving your well-being – physical, mental, emotional, overall!  What Health at Every Size, Intuitive Eating, weight-inclusive care, anti weight bias, etc. are really about  How oppressive, inequitable, and harmful weight-centric ways of approaching health can be Restrictive diets often leading to weight cycling and/or disordered eating, or even eating disorders  How a surface-level look at intuitive eating is not helpful, it's very nuanced  To not rely on social media solely for support in your health & well-being  And so so much more.   Links:

Disordered eating, eating disorders, and body image issues are very common experiences for many women, yet they are overlooked by most medical providers during pregnancy and postpartum. Today's guest is passionate about educating us about these topics and offering more understanding to struggling women. Join us to learn more! Kathryn Gantt is an eating disorder dietitian, certified yoga instructor, and mom of two who uses her experience to help people change their relationships with food and their bodies. She gives us an insightful look at the challenges obstetricians and care providers face without the education, experience, and certifications to deal with patients with eating disorders and body image issues. Our discussion also touches on the prevalence of weight bias in the medical field and how “diet culture” contributes to body image struggles during pregnancy and postpartum. Kathryn focuses her work on pregnancy and postpartum nutrition, mindful/intuitive eating, Health At Every Size (HAES), and non-diet approaches when counseling clients. She serves on the executive board of the WNC Chapter of the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals and is passionate about helping people understand the societal pressures that impact our physical and mental health during pregnancy and postpartum.  Show Highlights: How Kathryn came into her specialty of working with eating disorders How weight bias shows up in the medical field with very little understanding of eating disorders The difference between eating disorders and disordered eating—-and how body image issues fit into these categories Why all obstetricians work with people with eating disorders, whether they realize it or not How Kathryn works with Obs to do simple screenings for eating disorders, disordered eating, and body image issues How disordered eating and eating disorders relate to anxiety in pregnancy and postpartum How diet culture has shaped much of our thinking about pregnancy and women's bodies Why the nutrition piece during pregnancy and postpartum doesn't matter if we ignore mental health issues How to recognize signs of an eating issue—and what to do next Resources: Connect with Kathryn Gantt: Website (Learn more about the upcoming retreat on body positivity for women in Gatlinburg, TN, on January 19-21, 2024) and Instagram Visit www.postpartum.net for resources and support!  You can now watch the Mom & Mind Podcast on YouTube! Show Notes What is Bariatric Surgery? What is Bariatric Counseling? Is there a link between Bariatric Surgery and eating disorders?  In this podcast episode, Kate Fisch speaks with Sharon Ryan about Bariatric Surgery. She discusses the challenges that patients face when preparing for, or after undergoing, Bariatric Surgery.   MEET SHARON RYAN Sharon Lynn Ryan, MEd, AABC, LAC,  is a licensed associate counselor, therapist, speaker, and writer.  Sharon earned her masters degree in professional counseling (MEd) from William Paterson University, board certification as a bariatric counselor/educator from the American Association of Bariatric Counselors, certificates in personal training and nutrition from the National Personal Training Institute, and is clinically trained in EMDR, DBT, and CBT. Sharon specializes in eating and weight disorders, bariatrics, health and wellness, and is a firm believer in Health At Every Size (HAES)  intuitive eating, and body positivity. Visit Sharon Lyn Ryan to find out more.   IN THIS PODCAST What is a Bariatric Counsellor? What are the common feelings for patients, post bariatric surgery?. Is there a link between bariatric surgery and eating disorders? Post Surgical Eating Avoidance Disorder.   What does it mean to be a board certified Bariatric Counselor?   “There's an association called the American Association of Bariatric Counselors. You get board certified as a counselor so that you can work specifically with Bariatric patients. They require all the CEUs that you would get as a counselor or a therapist every two years you're reassessed and do your CEUs but it gives you specific training to work with people who are struggling with weight and maybe attempting to have bariatric surgery  ” Sharon Ryan   When we speak about patients who have undergone bariatric surgery, it is easy to assume that all the patients are happy with their results. This is not always the case and there are individuals who are frustrated that they don't look the way that they want to look or that it didn't go as promised.   “The American Association of Bariatric Counselors also covers the complications that come along with it and the problems that may come before and after, and how to address them so they cover not only the nutrition part of it, but the psychological part of it. Which is something that's really been overlooked, I feel like. in the field.” Sharon Ryan   Why should patients go for counseling before having bariatric surgery?   “I think there needs to be actual counseling and therapy for people prior to the surgery, because the people who are going for Bariatric surgery have, at the very least, disordered eating .” Sharon Ryan   Is there a possible link between eating disorders and getting bariatric surgery?   “From 2011 to 2019 there were about 2 000 000 bariatric surgeries performed in the United States. A study found out that 66% of them had a lifetime history of some sort of eating disorder and 48% of them at the time of them being approved for surgery had criteria for binge eating disorder.” Sharon Ryan   It makes us wonder how many of those that are willing to have the surgery actually knew they had an eating disorder.     How do you prepare patients for Bariatric Surgery?   “They need to be educated prior to their surgery. They need to go through therapy prior to their surgery. They need to be with a Dietician prior to their surgery. Not just once. And figure out why they're eating the way they're eating, why they're at that weight.” Sharon Ryan   It becomes important, when encountered with a client considering this surgery, to take the time to understand why they are considering the surgery, why they feel they need the surgery and build that relationship with the client.   “ The first rule to me of being a therapist is to be non-judgmental. So, if someone walked in and said I'm thinking of Bariatric surgery, you're not supposed to put your opinion into them right? You're just supposed to help them figure out why they are where they are, what they're hoping to get from that.” Sharon Ryan   What is the most common feedback to come from patients, post Bariatric Surgery?   It is not always that people are either satisfied with their surgery or feel as if they can sustain it for the long term. Many of them end up gaining that weight back.   “That's another reason why I'm so adamant because you need to have counseling before you have the surgery. Just because you have the surgery, it doesn't mean your behaviors are going to change.” Sharon Ryan   Tell us a little bit about the different types of surgery?   “So there is the band like you said, That's not done as much anymore. The most popular one is the gastric sleeve right now which is where they take out part of your stomach and they don't do any bypassing. Then the other one is the gastric bypass and that's the one where they actually remove part of the stomach and then bypass it to go through the intestine.” Sharon Ryan   What is Post Surgical Eating Avoidance Disorder?   “That's those who have the surgery and something happens where like let's say they are vomiting every time they eat and then they actually get afraid to eat.”  Sharon Ryan   It would appear that some patients who undergo the surgery end up developing issues such as Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder, more commonly known as ARFID.   "It's like Anorexia, you know like the ARFID thing but they get extreme weight loss and those people are even more susceptible, because what are they going to do? They can't binge. They can't do anything. These people are really susceptible to turning to substances, because they are depressed. . .” Sharon Ryan   There has been a shift in diagnosing which has happened over the past decade or so. Traditionally/ historically when we think about anorexia we would think about people, like the dsm 4, below 85% ideal body weight, so very low body weight, where we know in actuality that only 6% of people with eating disorders are actually underweight. What we now are able to watch out for, and luckily third party payers are catching on, is people who have lost a substantial amount of weight in a very short amount of time, whether they're still within range of “healthy weight” or not, it is still incredibly dangerous to lose weight so fast. So, as therapists we need to ensure we are aware of all the challenges facing clients and be able to provide any support or safeguards that can help our clients make decisions that give them the best chance of recovering. Bariatric Surgery and eating disorders may not be discussed together very often, but it has been fascinating to chat with Sharon Ryan about the relationship between the two. Sharon shares valuable insights, information and examples throughout the podcast.    To learn more about Sharon's work, follow the links below. Episode description: Katie Gantt, MHS, RD, LDN, RYT, is a registered dietitian who has been working in the field of eating disorders and disordered eating for over five years. Katie is passionate about helping moms have a healthy pregnancy and postpartum period by finding health without dieting and challenging disordered eating patterns. She is the owner of Kathryn Gantt Nutrition where she uses her clinical expertise and yoga training to help moms reconnect with their bodies and their relationship to food in a positive, trauma-informed style. Katie focuses on mindful and intuitive eating, Health At Every Size (HAES), and non-diet approaches when counseling clients and helping parents raise intuitive eaters. Katie joins us in this episode of Peace Meal to discuss how pregnancy and postpartum can complicate or instigate an eating disorder. Offering a wealth of firsthand insights on this nuanced topic, Katie shares cultural and biological factors that make women susceptible to eating disorders during this period of life. She acknowledges the difficulty of speaking up when triggered by uncomfortable comments from providers, who may be unaware of their weight bias and their potential reinforcement of eating disorder behaviors. Katie then identifies practical tips for how providers can better serve these populations. Lastly, she acknowledges the beautiful potential for recovery-oriented body appreciation during pregnancy and postpartum. We cover: How pregnancy and postpartum are uniquely poised to impact those with a history of eating disorders or disordered eating The limited eating disorder training among OBs, and how this contributes to missed disordered eating behaviors during pregnancy Weight-neutral approaches to prenatal and postpartum healthcare How to manage gestational diabetes in a way that doesn't contribute to disordered eating thoughts and behaviors How to hold space for body appreciation within pregnancy and postpartum In Katie's words: On the lack of screening for disordered eating during pregnancy: “Over 90% of women are never screened for disordered eating in pregnancy, at all. So if you don't provide that information or if you don't yourself quite realize that you have a disordered relationship with food, it's most likely never going to come up when you're with your OB.” On the special considerations for pregnant or postpartum women in eating disorder recovery: “Statistically, if we have a history of an eating disorder regardless if it's active or not in our pregnancy, there is a significantly higher risk of it recurring in the first year postpartum. And you couple that with women who have had a history of an eating disorder who have a 30% higher risk of developing postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety – that can be a really risky time for women.” On eating disorder recovery and body appreciation during pregnancy: “It's not uncommon to see eating disorder remission during pregnancy. There's this sense of, ‘this is kind of a cool thing that's happening [to my body].' For some of my clients, it's the first time they have ever had body appreciation.” Learn more about The Emily Program online or by calling 1-888-364-5977. - About the podcast: Peace Meal is a podcast hosted by The Emily Program and Veritas Collaborative that covers topics related to eating disorders, body image, and how society may influence our thinking. Embodiment for the Rest of Us - Season 2, Episode 10: Kymber Stephenson   Chavonne (she/her) and Jenn (she/her) interviewed Kymber Stephenson (she/her) about her embodiment journey.   Kymber Stephenson is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist living and working in Colorado. Her experience began with a love of food which led her to pursue a degree in Culinary Arts from Johnson & Wales University. As her love of science and helping people wove with that initial path, she continued on to a Bachelor of Science in Culinary Nutrition with a dual concentration in clinical dietetics and culinary food science. From there, her background spanned diverse roles across the food, nutrition, and healthcare sectors as she went on to ground in medical nutrition therapy.    Kymber is especially passionate about disordered eating management and prevention. In this vein, she focuses on educating clients about the multi-faceted ways history, marketing, food systems, culture, psychology, and body image affect health and relationships to nutrition, food, and body. She works with clients to restore & build their relationship with food, acknowledging not only its nourishing properties, but truly embracing its comforts, tradition, and fun! Kymber is a strong believer in a whole person approach, embracing integrated body image counseling which often goes far deeper than simply body or image.    Working in a client-guided manner and Health at Every Size-informed, she strives to help each unique person reach their idea of peace and satisfaction in their bodies and their overall lives. Kymber's driving philosophy is that all people deserve equitable access to quality food, evidence-based nutrition education, informed consent, and bodily autonomy regardless of status or background.   Socials: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kymberstephenson @sidebysidenutrition    Content Warning: discussion of privilege, discussion of diet culture, discussion of ableism, discussion of healthism   Trigger Warnings: 49:18: Kymber discusses Lindo Bacon's work before more awareness of the harm that they have caused in their work came to light in the first two weeks of March 2022 here, here, here, and here among others (with updates here and here) (this episode was recorded in April 2022)  1:13:44: Chavonne discusses how white supremacy culture impacts her eating behaviors   The captions for this episode can be found at  https://embodimentfortherestofus.com/season-2/season-2-episode-10-kymber-stephenson/#captions/   A few highlights: 2:49: Kymber shares her understanding of embodiment and her own embodiment journey 14:54: Kymber discusses how the pandemic affected her embodiment practices  34:54: Kymber shares her understanding of “the rest of us” and how she is a part of that, as well as her privileges 48:20: Kymber discusses her take on IE, HAES® and AND 1:26:06: Kymber shares how listeners can make a difference based on this conversation as well as where to be found and what's next for her Links from this episode: ASDAH's response to Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' Evidence Analysis Library (1) ASDAH's response to Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' Evidence Analysis Library (2) Health At Every Size® (HAES®) (especially the FAQ for the origin of the HAES® movement) Intuitive Eating Kyriarchy Laziness Does Not Exist Nikki Haggett Sick Enough Social Determinants of Health White Supremacy Culture   Music: “Bees and Bumblebees (Abeilles et Bourdons), Op. 562” by Eugène Dédé through the Creative Commons License   Please follow us on social media: Website: embodimentfortherestofus.com Twitter: @embodimentus Instagram: @embodimentfortherestofus

In this episode of the Female Athlete Nutrition podcast, I talk with anti-diet weight inclusive registered dietitian Heather Caplan. We start off by defining the terms: weight inclusive care, being an anti-diet and non-diet dietitian, and Health At Every Size (HAES). We discuss the importance of a weight neutral approach to nutrition because science proves that weight does not determine health. Heather and I explain the many limitations of BMI and defining health based on body size and shape. Heather talks about the Health At Every Size movement and its mission of inclusion to bring healthcare to all.  Heather talks about her introduction to dietetics and her own struggles with disordered eating that caused her to question the current weight-centered approach to nutrition and diet culture. She shares her career path from practicing in a weight-centered setting post college to discovering intuitive eating and weight neutral approaches to dietetics. We discuss studying nutrition in college and the many flaws with the curriculum.  We discuss the intersection between running and nutrition, and how sports dietitians can have a Health At Every Size approach and debunk the myths surrounding weight and performance. Dieting and weight loss may improve performance in the short term, but we explain how the sustainable path to long term success that allows athletes to reach even higher levels of performance must prioritize health first, regardless of weight.  Heather talks about founding WIND, Weight Inclusive Nutrition and Dietetics, to educate other dietitians, practitioners and more about inclusivity and diversity in nutrition.  Heather was the host of the RD Real Talk podcast for 5 years and she explains how shifting priorities have led to its end. We discuss the importance of change during different seasons of life, including new motherhood, in order to keep pursuing our ultimate passions and goals. We talk about the myth of doing it all and how what we see on Instagram and social media is not reality: the struggles are rarely shared.  Follow Heather on Instagram @heatherdcRD  Find Heather online at https://heathercaplan.com/ and WIND at https://weightinclusivenutrition.com/  Heather's Official Bio: Heather Caplan, pronouns she/her, is a weight-inclusive registered dietitian. The weight loss world can be an overwhelming place to navigate. There is SO much conflicting information out there and it's hard to know who you can trust. For the longest time, the diet industry had pretty much everyone convinced that in order to lose weight, you had to eat less, move more, and that would be enough. And when we quickly learned that this is rarely enough, “experts” started piping in and everyone had a theory on the royal road to weight loss: low fat, low carb, keto, macros…nevermind the crazy fad diets out there – I even remember trying to live on grapefruits for awhile. In recent years, new movements started popping up – Health At Every Size (HAES), body positivity, intuitive eating, the antidiet, and more – aimed at encouraging us to love our bodies as they are, look beyond weight loss for happiness, and importantly, to heal us from all the trauma caused by diet culture over the years. And while I completely embrace body acceptance, living life beyond the scale, and healing diet trauma, these movements have also left many women feeling very alone, and sometimes even judged negatively for wanting to lose weight. So in this episode, I am joined by dietician and fellow weight loss coach Cassie Christopher. Together we navigate through all of this with the goal of illustrating for you that there is a middle ground in weight loss. There are places where you can learn to both accept your body AND make the healthy changes you want. There are places where you can learn how to live the life you want and deserve right now WHILE you lose your weight. And there are places where you can heal from years of diet trauma, and learn how to feed your body and soul from a place of self-love, self-compassion, and knowing what's truly right from you, no matter what the diet industry has to say about that. Are you tired of the never-ending diet cycle? Intuitive Eating is for you. In today's episode, Claire shares what intuitive eating is and dives into a few of the principles. We also discuss how health is multi-dimensional and how intuitive eating actually goes way beyond just the food. Claire also shares how she has seen intuitive eating transform many of her clients' lives in such a positive way. Claire shares how she has had clients come to the realization that they aren't the problem, it is the diets and diet culture that are the problem. However, the good news is that there is another option out there - intuitive eating, and it isn't another restrictive diet. Claire also dives into what Health At Every Size (HAES) is and how there is often a stigma in healthcare against people in larger bodies. Quit Dieting for Good
Ep. 122: Unlearning Diet Culture with Alissa Rumsey

Quit Dieting for Good

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 25, 2021 36:18

Alissa Rumsey is a registered dietician. She’s been in the intuitive eating space for years, and I’ve been following her for a quite a while myself. It’s a huge honor to have her on the podcast today. Alissa has a weight-inclusive nutrition practice, and recently published a new book, Unapologetic Eating. In this interview we talked about the unlearning you have to do as part of leaving dieting behind. Alissa has an awesome process for helping people become unapologetic eaters, and we get into that as well! When you grab my latest offer, you can get started unlearning your old beliefs and kicking dieting to the curb! I’m offering two lost-cost, drop-in coaching calls. These are for women who are ready to start loving their bodies (Body Image Call) and stop emotional eating (Emotional Eating Call). If you’d like to see what coaching could be like, this offer is for you! Feel free to take advantage of whichever call topic resonated most with you (or grab them both if you’re ready to really dive deep)! Becoming a Nutrition Therapist Although she’s officially a registered dietitian, Alissa prefers to use the term nutrition therapist because she feels it better encapsulates what she does with her clients. She’s also a certified intuitive eating counselor. Her weight-inclusive nutrition practice is located virtually, and she offers 1:1 guidance for those looking to liberate themselves from dieting! As a young kid, Alissa didn’t have many external inputs around her eating and body size. She didn’t experience shifts (and increased stressors) around eating and body size until mid-way through high school. She stopped playing basketball as she was going through puberty, and gained weight. Looking back she can see that the transition of puberty and the decrease in movement would have clearly and naturally led to weight gain. Living through it, however, she was concerned and started dieting. She also got a job at a gym, and became fascinated in health and nutrition. Ultimately, her career as a dietitian started from a very disordered place of eating and exercising. Her thoughts were often consumed about guilt connected to eating and movement. She found her identity getting wrapped up in being the “healthy” person, and she felt pressured to maintain a certain image. Shifting Perspectives on Diet Culture When Alissa started working in the ICU of a local hospital, she found it an interesting change of speed. She was used to focusing on ways people could decrease calories or size, but in the ICU the focus was often on ways to get people to consume enough nutrients. Their more urgent physical needs shifted the dietary focus in a positive way. During this time Alissa was also lucky to be surrounded by roommates and co-workers who had healthy relationships with food. Slowly her own perspective changed, and she found herself migrating towards intuitive eating naturally. A few years later, she discovered the official intuitive eating framework. After a bit more learning, she was sold. Intuitive eating made so much natural sense, and she knew she needed to incorporate it into her work. Weight stigma, size bias, and misleading information about the connection between health and weight captured her interest, and she knew she couldn’t simply look away. Thankfully, Alissa notes that many programs now have more information about intuitive eating and the Health At Every Size (HAES) movement. No one was talking about those things when Alissa was going through school. Now, they’re becoming more recognized! Unapologetic Eating Alissa’s new book, Unapologetic Eating, is available now! When you’re ready to let go of dieting, there is a lot of unlearning that needs to happen. Ultimately, unlearning diet culture is a huge part of being able to become an unapologetic eater. Alissa notes that everything we think we know about food, nutrition, health, wellness, and body size is something we’re taught at one point or another. That means we have a LOT of deeply held beliefs about these things! Because our culture is very anti-fat, that means we’ve been programmed to elevate certain bodies and devalue others. These are considered implicit biases because we don’t really think about them. They’ve just been instilled within us, and it’s key that we take the time to unlearn them if we want to become free. Alissa also reminds us that growth is often uncomfortable! She recognizes that she holds a lot of body privilege as someone who is white, cis-gendered, heterosexual, and straight sized. Readers may find themselves learning new information that challenges their perceptions of how worthy, valuable, or superior some of these culturally privileged indicators really are – and that can be unsettling. Read with an open mind, and be willing to explore new ideas and ask the hard questions! Unlearning Diet Culture Alissa had built a whole identify around being “a healthy dieting”. As she started unlearning diet culture, she had to realize that those identity markers weren’t as important as she had once made them. Releasing them, however, meant that she had find new ways of thinking about and understanding herself. She also had to confront a lot of old beliefs in order to begin to reconnect with her own body, needs, and feelings. That might require questioning old beliefs. You need to be willing to consider where your current beliefs have come from, and the impact they may be having on the way you’re living. Eventually, you’ll find yourself wanting to know: What can I do about this? Alissa thinks of that as the opportunity to go even deeper! There is so much to delve into when it comes to raising awareness, and it’s an ongoing process. Unpacking your own history with dieting, nutrition, body-love, and more yields all sorts of amazing information about who you are, what beliefs you hold, and how dieting may have contributed to your life as coping mechanism. It’s Not Linear None of this is linear! Start where you are, and lean into what you’re learning. As you deepen your awareness, you’ll find continual areas that you want to continue shifting and changing. Once you recognize a thought pattern or belief that you want to change, Alissa recommends trying the opposite and seeing what happens! Self-compassion is key here, as well as paying attention to your body and listening to the signals that are being sent. You have to get comfortable with sitting in things as well! The answers you find in the process of unlearning diet culture are rarely black & white or binary. Instead, there are many shades of grey, many ways of being, and many paths to understanding. The more you learn about yourself, your body, and your mind, the more ability you’ll have to build new patterns and create change! Alissa’s Intuitive Eating Framework Unapologetic Eating is set up in four sections: Fixing, Allowing, Feeling, Growing. Those sections mirror her intuitive eating framework as well. In Fixing, the focus is on understanding the history of dieting, nutrition, and body-acceptance. Unlearning these parts of diet culture are really foundational. Clients (and readers) are asked to consider how that information plays into their own experiences and lived reality when it comes to food, body-confidence, and so on. Once that is understand, they can move into Allowing themselves to begin creating changes. What will it look like to do something different? To reconnect to the self? The changes that occur during Allowing lead naturally into Feeling. As you start feeling into your body, you’ll often start to feel other emotions. Often, this is really uncomfortable. Self-compassion, honoring and respecting your body, and sitting with hard things are all key parts of feeling. Finally, there is a chance to really start Growing. Once you’re done trying to fix yourself, begin to allow yourself to be, feel your feelings and reconnect to your body…. You get to grow into the fullest version of yourself. How do you want to eat? Who are you? What do you want to do? There is so much to dig into here – embodiment, self-expression, passion, desire – and it’s really powerful to explore it all! Food can be an amazing entry point to learning more about the Self! The journey is so powerful. You don’t need to fix yourself, and once you stop trying — so much in your life opens up!

Before I know what Health At Every Size was – when I ate or drank anything – I asked myself the following: will this make me thin or fat? And that was pretty much all I cared about. There was no “will I truly enjoy this?” There was no “how will this make me feel?” And there was no concern for my actual health. I didn’t really care if what I was about to eat contained a million different chemicals in an attempt to try and replace the flavour of the missing fat and sugars to keep it “low calorie.” I didn’t care about anything else apart from my reality of “thin-is-good” / “fat-is-bad”. My obsession with food and weight lead me to a variety of disordered eating behaviours, including: Constant attempts at under-eating/restriction, followed by binge eating weight-cycling (aka “yo-yo dieting”) food obsession, low self-esteem, (A LOT) of emotional eating, Anxiety around going out for food Body dysmorphia and generally feeling like a crazy person around food. When I started my recovery journey, I clung tightly to the hope that I could “recover” from disordered eating yet still casually try to lose weight. But let me tell you this, I was never able to truly heal my relationship with food—including my binge eating—until I fully committed to giving up all aspects of dieting and started seeking “health” in weight-neutral ways. Health At Every Size, combined with Intuitive Eating and some profoundly important self-acceptance and body image work eventually helped me to break free from the diet-binge cycle. There is a growing awareness of the importance of body positivity and intuitive eating. More people are embracing the Health At Every Size (HAES) concept and the belief that weight status does not equate to health status. However, there are some who believe that any “intentional” weight loss is more dangerous than being overweight and that it’s also pointless, because “95% of people who go on diets regain the weight”. This 95% statistic is repeatedly cited but it’s actually from a 1959 study who’s author claims it is outdated and overused. There also seems to be a growing divide within the field of dietetics with some practitioners drawing a line in the sand between “diets” and the “non-diet approach”.    Tune in to this episode for a discussion about dieting, weight loss, diet culture, behavior change and why some dietitians think there is more to agree on than disagree on when it comes to this topic. Today’s guest, Ragen Chastain, believes there is another way to health without buying into diet culture that just doesn’t work. She believes that health is achievable at any size. Ragen is an internationally recognized speaker, writer, and thought leader in the fields of body image and the Health At Every Size (HAES) philosophy. She has presented to corporations such as Google and Apple, and has been featured in notable publications such as the New York Times, NPR, and BBC News to name a few. In this episode, Ragen talks a little bit about her background including some of the weight stigma she has experienced. She discusses why she believes the HAES data is buried in diet culture research and addresses why being fat isn’t inherently unhealthy. Ragen explains the HAES philosophy more thoroughly, discusses some strategies bigger bodied people can use to stand up for themselves and advocate for their health care, and touches on the work that she does to educate health practitioners. Finally, Ragen offers a tangible tip on helping to move your health and wellness initiatives away from focusing on weight loss. This week on the Speaking of Hungry podcast I’m speaking with Amber Thomas, RD, and board-certified specialist in oncology nutrition. Amber takes 15 years of experience working with cancer patients in hospitals, cancer clinics, and the home health setting and now works privately with cancer patients as an online nutrition coach in her private practice, Cancer Nutrition Solutions. She is the first dietitian on the podcast who takes an intuitive eating approach to nutrition in cancer care. Amber helps cancer patients manage treatment side effects, goal-setting strategies to support nourishment and healing both during and after treatment works with cancer patients to help them uses compassionate mindset work to help clients examine deep-held beliefs about food and cancer, overcome food fears, and empower their survivorship journey through food after treatment. This is a great conversation whether you have a personal connection with cancer or are simply curious about the claims surrounding diet, nutrition, weight, and cancer risk. We chat about: Her path to becoming a dietitian specializing in oncology and how her approach leaned toward intuitive eating and Health At Every Size (HAES).  How weight bias and weight stigma is a result of our society normalizing diets, disordered eating behaviors, and the pursuit to lose weight as “healthy”.  Amber reflects on the weight stigma her cancer clients are faced with and how it affects their ability to nourish themselves and heal during and after treatment. The harm we are doing by trying to intentionally change our body size when in a vast majority of cases maintaining weight loss and smaller body size is not sustainable. The need to address the bigger picture of “why can’t people lose weight and keep it off?” The sad reality that many cancer patients are coming into treatment believing their body size is part of the reason they have cancer.  How many cancer patients start treatment believing it will help them “finally lose the weight”. In reality, cancer dietitians DO NOT want their patients losing weight during treatment no matter what their size.  Amber’s goals for her patient’s nutrition plans and when it’s the right time to introduce intuitive eating concepts. Amber’s thoughts on information out there regarding body size and cancer. Reports about certain foods being linked to a higher risk for cancer including sugar and soy. Amber uses her expertise to explain if we should avoid these foods or not.  How the nutrition focus for cancer recovery should be “what can we add to diet?” vs. “what should we eliminate?” Amber’s work to educate other healthcare professionals about taking a weight-neutral approach to oncology.  In this episode, I also answer a listener’s question regarding her struggle feeling guilt no matter what food she eats. Many of us may have a list of specific foods that we feel are “bad” or “off-limits”. What do you do when you feel this way about almost everything you eat? On the latest episode of the Speaking of Hungry podcast, I speak with Molly Bahr, LHMC, a licensed mental health counselor and certified intuitive eating counselor with a private practice in Miami. She also provides virtual sessions to residents of Florida and Hawaii.  Molly brings a Health At Every Size (HAES) perspective to the work she does as a therapist helping people with disordered eating, body shame, anxiety, depression, and trauma. The focus of her practice is to help people make peace with food and their body while creating a full and meaningful life. Molly works with disordered eating, body shame, anxiety, depression, and trauma. She has worked in a variety of treatment settings including inpatient and outpatient programs for eating disorders, substance abuse disorders, and an outpatient transgender clinic. January is a time we are hit hard with diet culture.  Everyone is chatting it up about their newest detox or reset, TV and social media diet ads are relentless, and gyms are in full force marketing mode trying to convince you this should be the year you make big changes to your body. Molly and I chat about New Year’s resolutions focused on weight loss as well as:  Molly’s personal experience with chronic dieting and how she started practicing intuitive eating both personally and in her work as a therapist.  How and why people use diets and restriction as a coping mechanism to deal with stress, anxiety, and depression.  How most people don’t consider their disordered eating or eating disorder problematic because diet culture has normalized restrictive eating and becoming hyper-focused on food,  exercise, and the pursuit of weight loss.  Intuitive eating may be used by some as a “diet” when it’s really about healing your relationship with food and has nothing to do with weight loss and shrinking your body. How restriction, diets, and disordered eating are used as a coping mechanism to avoid life situations, distract us, and also help us feel in control of something when other aspects of our life feel very out of control.  The importance of giving ourselves compassion over how difficult life experiences can be and remembering other ways to care for ourselves other than turning to food and our body size. Emotional eating is always targeted as a problem but restriction can be far more problematic.  The importance of surrounding yourself with anti-diet, intuitive eating social media influencers, books, podcasts, and blogs especially during this time when the diet industry is in full-on advertising mode.  Taking a look at your own diet history and how it worked out in the end when you’re considering another diet and pursuing weight loss.  Remembering that we don’t fail at diets. Diets fail us because our body is wired to stay alive, stay fed, and not lose weight. Molly’s body acceptance and anti-diet messages available on her Instagram account. Specifically, she has a “starter kit” on Instagram where she recommends various intuitive eating resources to help dig you out of diet behaviors.  The importance of having patience and give yourself time to go through the diet-ditching process. How long it takes varies for everyone. It could be months, one year, or a few years.  When you decide to ditch diets you may want to start with small steps vs. jump all in and there is no perfect order as to how you approach ditching these behaviors. Molly explains what “body acceptance” is all about and not necessarily that you’re 100% happy with your body all of the time. She also explains “body liberation”. Plus, Christy answers a listener question about how to navigate the food-shaming and fearmongering that’s often present in the world of food justice and environmental conservation. Deb Burgard, PhD, FAED (Fellow of the Academy for Eating Disorders), is a psychologist and activist from the San Francisco Bay Area specializing in concerns about body image, eating, weight stigma, and relationships. She is one of the founders of the Health at Every Size model, the creator in the mid-1990's of the BodyPositive.com website, and the host of the Show Me the Data listserv, building communities where people can find each other and the resources to resist weight stigma, especially in medical and psychological treatment. Her activism includes working with healthcare providers to integrate an understanding of the social determinants of health and creating interventions that address structural oppression and support stigma resistance. She can be found at conferences sparking impromptu dance parties in the pool. Christy's new book, Anti-Diet, is now available wherever you get your books! Four years ago, I stood in front of the mirror looking at a body that seemed soft… or at least softer than it had been at the height of my calorie-counting and exercise obsession. I had just gotten the email that said I was selected to perform at TEDxWomen. And I confess that I worried about what I would look like on camera. I was in the process of letting go of body perfectionism, embracing Intuitive Eating and the Health At Every Size (HAES) movement and letting my body find it’s natural weight set point. As a coach, I was helping others do the same. But I was still human… and still a woman raised in western culture where we grow up seeing worthiness as attached to our looks. As the “new media”, you and I are the faces of our businesses in Instagram feeds and internet browser windows RIGHT NEXT to perfect celebrities who fit in one narrow definition of beauty. It’s hard to not compare yourself. It’s oh so common to think you need to wait to do video or get on stage or do a photoshoot until you’ve cleared your acne, gone on that diet, or toned your arms. When we hate on our bodies, it’s hard to love our voices. It’s systemic. It creates resistance to being visible and consequently silencing your voice. The solution: Be comfortable in your skin without first changing the way that skin looks. So how did I still get on stage and confidently share my message? That’s what episode 126 of Unforgettable explores. Listen in. Listen in and you’ll learn: Why respecting your body and loving it are two different things My journey with body perfectionism (including parts I felt embarrassed to share) Why your body image is tied to the images you surround yourself with What accounts to follow and unfollow to reprogram your beauty brain Deeper support from me: FREE gift: Get your Message Clarity Kit here, so you can uncover your true message and clarify what you want to be known for. “Clear Message, Clear Copy” is my done-for-you message clarity + copywriting package for coaches wanting to land on a clear, cohesive way to express the story of their work and their place in it. How is what HAES preaches any different from what lifestyle coaches already do.  Did HAES just put a label on it?  If so, has the label become a pejorative for principles or positive self-talk that most coaches and athletes already practice? 2. Does HAES incorrectly attribute self-efficacy and self-esteem to how large or small a person is?  Are these not separate issues?  If HAES is more interested in helping people become comfortable with who they are on a psychological level, why is the campaign so focused on "SIZE", much as the name suggests?

Listen to Aaron talk about: – How he came up with his Star Wars analogy for Intuitive Eating and Health At Every Size versus diet-culture – How he experienced his body as a boy – How he and his family related to food – Why he’ll never forget his first trip to the dietitian with his mother – What the dietitian told him to do and why that set him up for the diet-binge-cycle – How he judged his body as an adolescent – How he ended up dieting for years and why he stopped – How diets fail all people, and why people still think "they failed" at the diet – What made him decide to become a registered dietitian – What he thought of Intuitive Eating and Health At Every Size when we first heard it – Why he clung to the idea of weight-loss for as long as he did – How his transition into Intuitive Eating went for him – How he is working on accepting his own body – Why his transition into Intuitive Eating made him eventually leave his job and open his own practice – What he has learned from his whole transformation – What made see the logic behind a weight-neutral approach to health – Why learning about Intuitive Eating and Health At Every Size is a lot like the movie "The Matrix" – How he handles his own judgmental side towards people, diets and bodies – Why he calls himself a feminist man and how he recognizes his privilege as a white male – How he wants to raise his boys – Why he is so grateful for his wife... ... Download Episode! Hello, lovely radicals! Time for another podcast ride; hold on tight! In this episode of the "Life Unrestricted" podcast, we are getting to know Glenys Oyston. Glenys is a Registered Dietitian who does NOT believe in dieting; she has seen behind the diet-culture BS and has become a Health At Every Size dietitian. Like many of her fellow RD’s that follow the Health At Every Size (HAES, for short) principles, she knows that it’s much more helpful to improve our relationship to our bodies and food than focusing on weight-loss. She has been a diet-victim for decades, just like many of us, and she has experienced just how much attention and congratulations we get when weight is lost. Therefore she knows exactly why so many people dread to gain weight. But instead of keeping on living in the pre-hell of either lusting after food or restricting it, she got taught a better way. She got educated about HAES, Health At Every Size, and as she says, it has transformed her life and the way she thinks about weight, diet and body image. Needless to say, she never dieted again and she is doing fabulous. She has helped countless humans ditch diet-mentality and find true self-acceptance and a healthy body image. She also writes the amazing blog called "Dare To Not Diet" and she is a fellow podcast lady. Together with Aaron Flores, she hosts the highly recommendable podcast "Dietitians Unplugged". Glenys tells us how she came to be a Health At Every Size (HAES) dietitian, and how the process of stepping out of the dogmatic diet-culture chains has helped her—finally, in her forties—to develop a relaxed and uncomplicated, peaceful relationship with food and her body. She shares her story with us and you’ll hear: – Why she never learned to eat balanced meals as a kid – How her mother’s diet-mentality kept her from eating with her daughter – How she ended up comforting herself with cookies and cake – Why she ended up repeating what her mother did: go on strict, restrictive diets – How dieting kept her mental and physical bandwidth trapped and made her obsess about food – How an incredibly lucky coincidence saved her from another 20+ years of yoyo-dieting – How studying the Health At Every Size (HAES) principles helped her free herself from eternal dieting – How she gave up on the "thin person-game" and learned to accept her body in its natural, happy shape – Why she thinks it’s no coincidence that diet-culture started skyrocketing after women got the right to – What is lost on the world when the majority of the female population is dieting/focusing so much energy on weight-loss – How diets are just as addictive as any other coping mechanism – Why it’s never really about the weight or our body, even when we think it is – What we have to work on before we can successfully ditch diets and embody ourselves – How she and her HAES-colleagues help their clients to un-diet and re-allow their previously restricted foods into their diet – Why the whole process of un-dieting requires a lot of trust, courage and strength – What her deepest wish is – What she would like to be remembered for... ...And so much more! It’s a lucky day for all of us, because we get to listen to her highly insightful knowledge and opinion about our relationship to food, bodies and health. Dr. Linda Bacon is a health professor and researcher on the inside track of weight-regulation science, she holds graduate degrees in physiology, psychology and exercise metabolism with a specialty in nutrition. She has conducted federally funded studies on diet and health and is well-published in top scientific journals, and has written two books, first, her highly acclaimed bestseller "Health At Every Size – The Surprising Truth About Your Weight" and recently "Body Respect – What Conventional Health Books Get Wrong, Leave Out Or Just Fail To Understand About Weight". She is currently a health professor at City College of San Francisco and an Associate Nutritionist at the University of California Davis. She is sharing her story with us and will tell us: – Why she invested decades diving into science – How it is possible, that the clear understanding about health (and how little weight really plays into it) has for decades been kept from the public – Why the truth about diets not working and weight not being an important determinator of health is being held back – Who is really behind the decision to make "obesity" classify as a disease – Why there is such tremendous resistance to the idea of size-acceptance – Who and what is behind the "obesity"-crisis, fat-fear and weight-stigma – Why our capitalist society needs us to believe there is something "wrong" with us – Why putting the sole focus on weight-loss will not improve health markers, and what does – Why so many women and men aren’t even recognizing the damaging effects of the myths they believe in – Why diet and exercise are only small contributors to a person’s actual health – How social status, agency, genes, mental and psychological stress and unfair treatment are so much more important in determining someone’s health – How, during her Phd, she was confronted with the fact that the actual (!) truth wasn’t appreciated by decision-makers – Why so many doctors are innocently prescribing weight-loss despite the fact that this most often doesn’t address the issue at hand – What the pillars of Health At Every Size (HAES) really are and what the most common myths about it are – Why Health At Every Size (HAES) is for people of all sizes, and why it gets so much push-back – Why we need a lot of critical thinking to see behind the lies that keep so many people trapped, unhealthy, and frustrated – Why weight- and fat-discrimination are highly detrimental to a person’s health and will never lead to long-lasting, healthy weight-management – Why it is wise to look at so-called "scientific proof" with a critical eye – Why people who accept and appreciate their bodies will take better care of it – Why much of the problems we blame on fat have, in fact, nothing to do with fat – Why both thin people as well as people in larger bodies risk medical misdiagnosis due to the BMI index – Why she is optimistic that the medical profession will, ever so slowly, change their views – What her mission in life is... ... About the book: Full is the true, poignant story of one woman’s spiritual journey as she recovers from anorexia, eases the emotional pain of her hunger through yoga and Buddhism, and finally becomes full. In this inspiring and captivating memoir, Kimber Simpkins captures vividly—with piercing insight, raw emotion, and often humor—the all-consuming hunger she felt on a daily basis as a result of an eating disorder. Sick of dieting and hating her body, Simpkins decides to get to the bottom of her unhappy relationship with her body. That’s when she discovers the healing power of yoga and Buddhism. Along the way, Simpkins realizes her hunger isn’t simply physical, but that it comes from a place deep inside her. Through the wise teachings of yoga and meditation, Simpkins discovers she doesn’t have to live in a prison of self-dissatisfaction. In fact, by understanding the root of her pain and learning to love herself in body, mind, and spirit, Simpkins is able to truly set herself free. As she wrestles with her inner demons of hunger and perfectionism and learns how self-acceptance can soften even her toughest inner critic, Simpkins takes us along on her voyage of self-discovery. At its core, this book is a journey to find true self-fulfillment that will inspire readers in their own search to create a full and meaningful life. From the author: Hi, I’m Kimber Simpkins. As long as I could remember, hunger followed me like an annoying little brother from the elementary school tetherball court, around the middle school track, into the spotlight of my high school’s production of “Once Upon a Mattress,” even tracked me into my college dormitory with its multi-table buffet, and all the way past long days spent in the dark law school library cubicles. As a lawyer and a new mother, I thought I would never be rid of it. It took years of practicing the gentle awareness that my yoga and meditation teachers urged me to offer myself before I figured out how to turn hunger into a friend instead of a problem. This is the story of Full. I’m also working on a second book, 52 Ways to Love Your Body (New Harbinger, Jan 2016), which is full of simple practices you can use daily to treat your body with more love. When I’m not balancing on my wobbly indoor standup paddleboard yoga mat, I might be outside in the garden meditating on our flock of backyard chickens while getting ready to go teach a yoga class or workshop. I am a big fan of the Health At Every Size (HAES) movement and community, and welcome students of all sizes and levels in class. I’m grateful to be a long-time Bay Area resident, enjoying the California weather with the love of my life, son, dog, cat, and chickens in Oakland.

Mind Body Musings Podcast: Feminine Embodiment | Surrender & Trust | Relationships | Limiting Beliefs | Authenticity

Episode 38: Dr. Linda Bacon is the creator of the movement Health at Every Size, also known as HAES. This movement has revolutionized what it means to be healthy and is stripping away our culture’s longtime belief that overweight means unhealthy and that one’s health can only be determined by one’s size. Dr. Linda Bacon is changing the way we view our own bodies, as well as the bodies of others and has made a huge impact already with her two books Health at Every Size and Body Respect. Bacon’s academic training includes two Masters Degrees, one in Psychotherapy, specializing in Eating Disorders and Body Image, and the other in Exercise Science, specializing in Metabolism. She also earned a PhD in Physiology with a Nutrition emphasis from the University of California. Relying on her unusual blend of academic, therapeutic and clinical expertise, Bacon is adept at translating scientific research into practical application. Her personal difficulties with weight regulation and her experience in overcoming them provide important perspective and inspiration for her work. Bacon is currently a Health Professor at City College of San Francisco and an Associate Nutritionist at the University of California, Davis. Today we’re going to learn about not only the scientific aspects of health, but also the social aspects that are contorting it’s true definition. Who's excited for this?! Here's what we discuss in today's show: How the "Health At Every Size" (HAES) movement originally started. Why our culture makes it hard for us to love our bodies. The top terms we need to throw out of our diction. How to reclaim the word "fat" and disarm the "bully." Thin privilege; when size is a currency. Focusing on weight is not the way to manage health and make the changes we want to make. Scientific studies aren't what fights prejudice. It starts with compassion. People that live more challenged lives often get the diseases that we label as "obesity." Your story matters. The number one thing we can do to improve our body respect.
