Fiona Sutherland and Lisa Pearl Supervision Training for Dietitians - starting soon! Beth says "Don't hesitate - trust me, you won't regret taking this training now!!" This is Part 2 of 2 on skill development for dietitian supervisors providing supervision-from highly seasoned to just considering. Our guests (and host) participate in lifetime supervision - it is the best connection resource for dietitians, especially those who work in behavioral health nutrition. Focusing on our client, focusing on ourselves, focusing on the relationship of our client to ourselves. What's the difference between supervision and consultation? Let's face it, there is good supervision (supportive, nurturing, positively life changing for the dietitian and client) and not so good supervision (checking the boxes, feels like a money-making plan more than a relationship). Defining the rupture - the part of us that rushes in and needs to know/needs to give the answers; how do we learn more about those parts? All cities tour flyer - Supervisor Training Event 2024

Today we chat about our day today when we headed to the University of Wollongong to run a 2 hour workshop on the non-diet approach and weight inclusive care. We also address a couple of articles recently criticising or critiquing the non-diet movement despite clearly not understanding the approach at all. You can check out Fiona Sutherland's (The Mindful Dietitian) instagram post about the Australian article on her page and a great response to the Washington Post Article here. We're very tired and a bit incoherent but we hope you get something out of this chat! We're taking a 2 week break over the school holidays and will be back week 1 of term 2 ready to jump in and launch Lifeguards : The non-diet way for parents of teens. Fiona Sutherland, APD Food and eating and the way we regard our bodies can't be disconnected from the other parts of our lives. Bring questions and a reflective spirit to supervision. Supervision is a powerful burnout-protective mechanism Burnout can carry with it feelings of shame, especially for new dietitians. But, it is not abnormal; many professionals experience burnout. Eating disorder work requires a lot from practitioners. We need to recognize honestly the weight of the work we're doing and acknowledge the help we need to continue to do the work well. It's not just our clients who are on a journey of healing- we are too. Our nervous systems are both in the room together, and we need to acknowledge this. Being in a community of dietitians on Facebook is not the same as supervision and it cannot replace supervision. When we elevate supervision, we set a higher standard of care to expect of ourselves and each other when doing this work. I can be who I am right now and that is enough. This feeling can be “supercharged” by being in supervision. Is it enough to just sit with someone and be present for a person as they're telling me something difficult? We are trained to “get to the good stuff,” that is, the action steps towards behavior change for our clients. But that does not always have to be the ultimate priority for time with our clients. We don't always have to be “fix it” people. Dear Food,The high school version of me would have been the last person on this Earth to ever believe that my relationship with you would end up causing me so much heartache and pain. I was fine until college. Backtracking to childhood, I always loved you. I was a foodie, never overthought and wasn't obsessed with the idea of what I would eat next. Food was wonderful, especially "treats" or "junk-food" type items that I didn't get to eat often. I know there were times when my eyes were bigger than my stomach, but maybe this is a thing that many young kids also experience? High school was normal. I was active playing a sport that I loved, busy with school, and spending time with family and friends. Senior year, I found myself with more freedom than ever. A lot of it was spent watching tv or cooking and eating with friends. Then came college. After a particularly sad and confusing breakup with a boy and betrayal by a friend, my college friend group disintegrated. In retrospect, I think I may have retreated into TV and snacks, and there was no one to tell me to do differently. Then, during Thanksgiving break, I realized that I had been too free with you, food, and my "cute little body" was quickly becoming something I was ashamed of and disgusted by. I'd never had anything but a small body and lived in a family of small people. I decided I would pay more attention to what and how much I was eating. I figured this would help get myself under control. And from the moment I became aware of your presence and your power in my life, things really have never been the same since. Fast forward through five months of increasingly difficult and dreadful exercise regimens and an increasingly restricted intake of food, I left school early to move home and enter outpatient treatment. My junior year, I finally transferred into XYZ college. I was ecstatic, but the restriction started almost right away. This time, though, my body was far more resistant to restriction, and it was increasingly difficult to not give in and binge. I returned home after only 3 months, and didn't return to school until the next summer. Now, my 4th year of college is almost over. That means I've been binging for a year now. It's hard to believe that I ever was able to restrict at all, because binging is such an everyday part of my life now. Over these past years, I have had consistent therapy, and have also met with dietitians, but it seems like nothing is able to help me. In fact, the binging seems like it's getting worse and worse – in the past two months alone, I have gained X pounds. I think I've lost hope in ever being normal with food or body image. I feel so abnormal and wrong. In recovery, binging was always my biggest fear, and now it's my constant reality. I have all the tools and resources I should need to help myself and change, but I'm still doing this. How did we get this far?! ABOUT LARA REAVES :When Lara Reaves arrived at a place of meaningful recovery with an urge to help people like herself. When asked by mentor Rebecca Copper “what do you want to do deep down inside in your gut,” Lara knew the answer was to help others with eating disorders and Lara’s training began her training shortly thereafter. The clinical expertise and decades of recovery from her mentor offered Lara a unique education that “I would have never experienced during a psychology master's program.” During this time, Lara assisted in building a virtual Disorder Eating program, seminars on Eating Disorder Treatment, workshops, and writing projects. The experience was inspiring, and watching people make peace with food and their bodies felt like witnessing miracles. Lara realized that the Recovery coaching aspect of the work was what she loved and felt the most passionate about, leading to Lara receiving her certification as an Eating Disorder Recovery Coach from The Rebecca's Foundation Institute.Lara was supervised and trained directly under Rebecca Cooper, world-renowned eating disorder therapist, author, and founder of Rebecca's House residential treatment center. Lara also volunteered as a Recovery Mentor, an experience that planted the seed to pursuing work as a recovery coach. She found it deeply rewarding to be a part of someone else's transformative journey towards a deeper, more peaceful relationship with food, addiction, and themselves. Through looking at the causes, effects, and social pressures, she grew her awareness of how much needed to be done to help people with Eating Disorders and mental health. As a recovered anorexic, bulimic, and alcoholic, Lara realized her new mission was increasing awareness of multiple aspects of the problem, guiding people in steps on the journey to recovery, and educating the public about the seriousness of eating disorders.Since recovery, Lara has worked in residential clinical settings, adolescent mental health facilities, and is well-versed in communicating with a treatment team. She is the Chief Operations Officer of The Rebecca's Eating Disorder Foundation, where they fund men and women who want to get treatment. Lara is a Certified Eating Disorder Recovery Coach from The Rebecca’s Foundation Institute, Chief Operations Officer and Coach for Rebecca’s Eating Disorder Foundation, Body Image Training for Clinicians: The Missing Piece of Whole-Body Healing with Marci Evans, CEDRD-S & Fiona Sutherland, and Certified Holistic Nutrition Practitioner from Southwest Institute of Healing Arts, Tempe AZ.Lara continues to value and love doing the things that helped her to reach full recovery by continuing to deepen her sense of spirituality and connection with the world including attending 12 step support groups, prayer and meditation, journaling, walking in nature, and reading a mix of spiritual and self-help books. Lara resides in Southern California, where she lives with her beloved husband Amir and their two dogs Ariel and Ernest. In her free time, Lara enjoys doing what she genuinely loves. High-performance athletes are Australia's version of Royalty. They do superhuman things and adoring fans hail them as heroes, but off the field, they are human beings. And like all human beings, they are susceptible to eating disorders and body image issues. In fact, many athletes are at much higher risk of disordered eating and eating disorders due to the intense pressures and cultural expectations placed on them. The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and the National Eating Disorder Collaboration (NEDC) have teamed up to come up with a set of guidelines to help sports teams, clubs and organisations identify warning signs and prevent athletes from developing eating disorders. In 2004, Australian Swimmer Jessica Smith hit her lowest point. She was living out her dream to compete for her country in the Paralympics in Athens but her eating disorder was holding her back. She was expected to make a podium finish but she didn't even qualify for the final.National basketball star Maddie Garrick's eating disorder took hold while she was a teenager but her experience was different from Jessica's. At the AIS she found the support and positive culture that she needed to thrive as an athlete and to find lasting recovery from her ED.In this episode, we also hear from the AIS lead nutritionist, Nikki Jeacocke and prominent sports nutritionist Fiona Sutherland about how a new set of guidelines for sporting organisations is helping create a safe culture for high performing athletes.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We welcome Fiona Sutherland, director of the Mindful Dietitian, into the red zone today. Fionia is one nerdy and well-informed sports dietitian. She has worked with elite-level athletes including gymnasts and divers. Her knowledge and understanding of eating disorders in sport are unbelievable. She hits us over the head with pure facts and logic. She challenges both Tait and I's understanding of the evidence-based funnel and the risks associated with weight category-based sports. How can we minimize these impacts through the environment we create and the langue that we use?

Fiona is the first guest that I interviewed post-Coronavirus outbreak. This episode is the perfect way to open up the really difficult conversations that we are going to be having moving forward as the crisis continues and both our clients and ourselves attempt to navigate the uncertainty. The work that we do with our clients is completely different than it was prior to this crisis. This is an unprecedented time in our world, and we need to continue to have these conversations. None of us have the answers. All we can really do is bond together, build community, go forward in our businesses, and try to do the very best that we can. This conversation with Fiona helped me tremendously, it felt like a supervision session. Our clients need us now more than ever. We need each other now more than ever. I hope that this episode brings you some peace and some permission to feel all the feelings, and I hope that this episode brings you some joy! Some of the topics discussed include: What can we do when it feels like the world is crashing down around us? Can we actually still run our businesses right now? + the advice I wish I could have given myself two weeks ago! Best practices for running a virtual practice The importance of having our own self-care practices in place For more information, visit https://www.pursuingprivatepractice.com/33

We have the pleasure of welcoming a superstar in the space of nutrition and eating behaviours onto the Waffle. Fiona Sutherland (@themindfuldietitian) is a sports dietitian with over 15 years of experience in the field. Every time I hear her speak I always leave feeling more confident, calmer and with added insights into better supporting our clients. These times can be really challenging and confronting. There may be a lot of unprocessed emotions ramping up during this time and unexpected events just around the corner. The panic buying as a result of the COVID-19 breakout has caused major concerns to our food availability and our loss of control in so many of life's facets will impact many people's relationship with food. It is this reason that Fiona was the first person that came to mind to discuss what's happening out there at the moment. She share some insights around food behaviours, disordered eating and some particularly prominent red flags to be aware of. Fiona gives us some really pragmatic advice. If you're someone who is experiencing quite a lot of anxiety due to the events happening in the world or someone who typically turns to foods following turmoil, then this is the podcast for you. If you have any question or concerns and would like to reach out, please do so – As always, we are offering all listeners an opportunity for a free assessment here (https://compeatnutrition.typeform.com/to/AayZgf) or live Q&As on our social media if you require some support but can't necessarily afford it right now. We're also releasing as much free content as we can during this tough time to help you navigate it. These are just small ways to give you a few actionable strategies and help you cope with whatever you may be going through.

Without a focus on weight, surely we're neglecting health right?Health At Every Size® (HAES) looks to remove the primary focus on weight in healthcare, allowing for equity in access to care and the promotion of health behaviours regardless of body size. And yet it has loud criticism for being so-called anti-health.In this episode we explore what HAES is and is not, the consequences of our current weight-centric model in healthcare and where Becky (both consumer and provider) fits into all of this. We're also fortunate to be joined by Accredited Practising Dietitian Fiona Sutherland who shares her knowledge and wisdom on this topic with us all.Including defining health in the first place and providing hope for those who like us. were not trained to operate from a weight-inclusive model.Remember to join our community here and together let's change the conversation around food. You can also follow us on Instagram - @whatdoieat.thepodcastMonica - @monicafenwicknutritionNadia - @nadiafelschFull show notes on our website.

ICYMI: I’m hosting the DC WIND Symposium in September! Registration is open, and the planning and execution of this next WIND event has been almost all-consuming. So, instead of your regularly scheduled interview-style episode, I’m sharing some lessons learned, bringing you behind-the-scenes with this major project. I confess to a Big Mistake I made during the WIND Workshop (a few, actually), what to expect at the DC WIND Symposium, and why I’ve shifted my stance on working with brands and company partners (who have, thus far, made most of this possible). I share an anecdote about something I’ve learned since hosting the WIND Workshop (and why I’ll be re-recording one of these sessions), and also share this important quote from an eloquent essay by the author known as Your Fat friend on Medium: “Beyond your good intentions, “the last acceptable form of discrimination” tells me that you believe racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism are all completed chapters, and that they have closed for all of us. But our attitudes are not so simple, our intent not foundational, and our history not so straightforward.” Join us for the DC WIND Symposium in September! Early-bird registration is still open as of the time of recording. More about the agenda, speaker announcements, and registration information: weightinclusivenutrition.com/events Or, apply for the WIND scholarship open to the Diversify Dietetics community! Reminder: DC WIND is happening in collaboration with Fiona Sutherland and Haley Goodrich’s non-diet approach workshop! You don’t have to register for both, but you receive a discount on registration if you do! Haley Goodrich, INSPIRD private practice dietitian and co-leader of the #INSPIRDtoSEEK Facebook group for nutrition entrepreneurs, joins me on this episode to talk about holding space for our clients. But first, we dive into the evolution of her business, and her own process of embracing a non-diet approach and learning how to do some uncomfortable work. This episode touches on how we can do less harm and more good by addressing our egos, our expectations, and our learned behaviors that suggest we have to have "The Fix" and provide tangible takeaways every time—and changing that approach. Instead, we are learning to be present with another person and their story, without always having (or needing) a solution. We touch on thin and body privilege, weight stigma, expanding your business, and starting to see how weight inclusive practices apply beyond nutrition therapy and into the world around us. Aaron and Glenys discuss how this can be a difficult topic to broach with clients, but how it is essential to the work of making peace with food. Both share their experiences in talking about body image and weight stigma with clients and how it helps to move the work of finding peace with food forward. In the final episode of 2017, we're talking to the sensational Fiona Sutherland, non-diet dietitian & yoga teacher, about how to navigate the holidays around food, body image, and diet chat. We discuss everything from how to cope with food guilt & anxiety, to how to stop food FOMO, breaking the binge/restrict cycle, and how to deal with diet chat and the food police. This is probably my favourite episode of the whole year; Fiona is a total babe, so warm and compassionate but doesn't take any crap. Exactly our kind of people. I really think you're going to love this episode. Download Episode! Hey, lovely radicals... podcast time! In today's episode of the "Life. Unrestricted." podcast, I talk to Sarah Harry from Melbourne, Australia. Sarah is a psychotherapist, yoga teacher, researcher, writer and university lecturer. As a leading body image and eating disorders specialist and experienced clinician she has a refreshing perspective on bodies, weight, movement and inclusivity. Sarah was the first yogi in Australia to offer yoga for bigger bodies. She has practiced yoga for more than 20 years, and as the owner and founder of "Fat Yoga", she runs specialist classes and retreats. She is also co-director of "Body Positive Australia" (alongside Fiona Sutherland, whom I interviewed in episode 28). Sarah is a member of the Yoga and Body Image Coalition USA, sits on the National Advisory Board of Health at Every Size Australia and she is a member of the National Eating Disorders Coalition. Listen in as Sarah tells us: – How Fiona and herself started working together, and how "Body Positive Australia" came into existence – Where they both see the problem with the term "Body Positivity", and how it’s being co-opted – Why there are opportunities to help change the system from the inside – How she aims to get her message across in interviews – Why authenticity and humor have helped her a great deal – How she decided to show up in regards to her own personal family story – What readers of "Fat Yoga" tell her they are most thankful for – What she remembers about growing up in a body that was different from what her parents believed was "a good body" – How her 20-year-long quest to be thin started, and what it cost her – Why she never told anyone about her raging eating disorder – How her body hate led her to have various surgeries and why she believed the massive pain those caused her was "the punishment for being bigger" – Why she would NEVER recommend weight-loss-surgery to anyone – At what point she started to turn her life around – Why she hit the jackpot with the person she ended up working with – Why yoga is often misunderstood in the west, and what it’s really about – Why she works on bringing more "real" yoga to the field of recovery – How she called out "The Yogi Times" on their weight-stigmatizing articles – Why people react with anger when their beliefs, that they were invested in for so long, are challenged – When and how to address people’s weight-biases, and what reactions to expect – Why "body love" can be a misleading and overwhelming term, and why "body acceptance" or "body neutrality" can be much more helpful – Why Instagram (and social media in general) are intensifying people’s focus on bodies and appearances, and what she has to say about that – Why there are people who dislike the term "all bodies are good bodies"... ... Download Episode! Lovely radicals! Let me bring some sunshine into your lives: In today's episode of the "Life. Unrestricted." podcast, I talk to Fiona Sutherland from Melbourne, Australia. Fiona is the Director of "Body Positive Australia" which offers therapy, yoga and retreats to the community and also of "The Mindful Dietitian" which offers mindfulness and client-centered practice, training opportunities and information, specifically to dietitians worldwide. Fiona is a specialist in Eating Disorders (mostly Binge Eating Disorder), eating behavior and body image. Fiona has recently been appointed to the Australia & New Zealand Academy of Eating Disorders Board, where she aims to strengthen the voice for ED recovery and Health at Every Size. She is a professional kid-wrangler (of two boys, aged 5 & 7) and she is currently half-way through her yoga teacher training. She is passionate about how we can help everyone – in every body! – live in peace within this very brainwashed diet-culture. You will hear Fiona share: – Why she thinks it’s never worth to sacrifice birthday cake to a thinness-dream – What makes scales the worst device to have around – What she loves to do to scales and what she promises to do if I smash my elliptical – Why compulsive exercise can cost us the experience of actually truly fulfilled needs – How she proves why you, me and everyone else is inherently worthy; without pursuing our ideas of perfection (i.e. the need to be busy, the need to pursue weight-loss, the need to be fit, etc.) – What she learned about bodies when she was a kid – Why she describes her experience as a child as "thin-xiety" – How her mother’s dieting behavior bewildered her – What traumatic memories she has of the time when she went to weight-loss group with her mother – How her sister got treated for being in a larger body – Why all of these experiences made her angry enough to DO something about the toxicity of diet-culture – How we get tricked by society’s messages about weight and weight-loss that "there is a magic bullet" and how this sets us up for falling into the trap that everything "can be fixed almost instantly" – Why food-restriction and any attempts at dieting are so harmful and have ZERO to do with health – Why our internalized diet-mentality and weight-obsession can burn a whole into our self-worth – Why any sort of diet-recovery, be it for lifelong dieters, disordered eaters or people with eating disorders, is a slow process with lots of tiny steps – Why our belief that we master recovery success either instantly or just not try it at all is coming from the voice of the eating disorder – What little steps could look like, in terms of eating or exercising – Why our judgment of our behaviors (emotional eating, for example) is what creates the real problem and how we can start to become more observing and less judgmental about ourselves – What the key element is to a smoother recovery process – How she would raise ME if I had been her child (and what her goals are for her own children) – What her top tips are to avoid passing our body image struggles on to our children – What "The Body Positive Australia"’s mission is and what kind of services they offer – How they help make dietitians and other health professionals aware of the long-term harm of dieting and of weight-discrimination – Why her business partner’s "Fat Yoga" classes are taking off like crazy – What they continuously do to change the harmful paradigm of weight-loss-idealization and diet-culture... ... Do you have a hard time eating without worrying about "good" and "bad" food labels? Do you feel like food is your enemy? Do you feel overwhelmed by all the nutrition info out there? Join Julie and fellow dietitian Fiona Southerland to start unpacking this issue! Subscribe and leave a review here in just seconds! Key Points: Our bodies have lots of different methods, including our brains and our intuition, to help them figure out what they needs in terms of food in order to feel satisfied and full. Healthy eating includes PLEASURE! Fiona Southerland joins to help answer this week's letter! Self-compassion and kindness is super important when we confront our beliefs related to food rules. We are not alone… so many of us feel this way. It's impossible to follow every single food rule! The more we try to follow rules and live in our heads (intellectualizing!), the less we listen to our body and intuition (innate wisdom!). There are so many crazy things going on in the world… why are we focused on whether or not something has gluten in it?! Even the professionals don't know everything about nutrition… it's confusing! When we try to control things that weren't supposed to be controlled (like our food intake) we go haywire. Our culture is confusing health with our appearance (like our body shape). Our expectations about the female body inform our opinions of health. Fiona's "Build up and let go model:" build up our skills of inner awareness, which will allow us to let go of rigidity. We need skills related to our intuition in order to drop the food rules and stick to it! How do we find a stable place outside of food when we feel out of control with our body? The wise parts of us are not perfect! Intuitive eating can become another set of diet rules… don't let it! The foundation of intuitive eating is unconditional permission to eat. We must help people build long-term resilience against the cultural crap! Self-care and personal connection are super helpful for our wellbeing, and we have to return to our well of wisdom and call upon a stable place of self-compassion to take care or ourselves and move past cultural expectations. Intuitive eating is s different way of BEING with food. It's peace. But it's scary, and that's okay! Perfectionism and the all-or-nothing approach can get in the way of healing around food. Fiona says, “Reassurance without assurance”… we will support you through the confusion! HEALING YOUR RELATIONSHIP TO FOOD IS MESSY!! (Cultivate the mess!) Although knowledge is important, it can take us away from living. It's time to slow down and hone in on our intuition. Show Notes: Link to subscribe to the weekly FREE Food Peace Newsletter.
