There's so much more to health than what grabs our attention these days (I mean … when can we stop talking about weight!?). That's why I'm thrilled to bring you this episode with Deanna Belleny Lewis who has spent most of her career working in food policy and directly within community health. She once tried to get rid of BMI as a measure for food program funding and places her efforts instead on the social determinants of health. Everything from our economic stability to the way our communities are designed impacts our ability to be healthy. (Do you have access to different foods? Is your neighbourhood even walkable at all? Has discrimination such as redlining impacted your area?) Deanna also talks with me about equity in the dietitian sphere, advocating for inclusion on every level: from care providers, to those creating curriculums, to those passing health policies—and how we can encourage eating in ways that are both inclusive and individualized. About Deanna: Deanna Belleny Lewis is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and Public Health Practitioner currently living in Hartford Connecticut. She is the co-founder of Diversify Dietetics, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the racial and ethnic diversity in the field of nutrition by empowering nutrition leaders of color. She additionally works at the Harvard Medical School Center for Primary Care as the Assistant Director of Health Systems Transformation. Deanna is passionate about creating system-level changes that positively impact health and advance equity for Black and Brown communities. On this episode: The connection between food and mood Why weight shouldn't be a focal measure of wellness The importance of community engagement and social support networks on health Movement for the sake of movement and food for the sake of food (nothing more!) Deanna's experience working in policy. (When Michelle Obama was spearheading the White House's nutrition movement!) What types of change are needed to make healthy choices easy for everyone Why tying BMI to funding for food and health programs is problematic. “We shouldn't try to determine health based on a single data point.” The history of how policy decisions came to be: who is making these decisions? I value ongoing anti-racism education for myself and my audience, as well as supporting equity-centered organizations. Since Jess Creatives primarily works with nutrition and fitness professionals, we have committed to monetarily supporting Diversify Dietetics on a monthly basis. This week on the Pursuing Private Practice Podcast, I’ve decided to re-air an episode that was originally out in March with Tamara Melton titled Diversity in Dietetics.  This issue is so important to our field. With everything going on around the United States with the Black Lives Matter movement, I really do think that we have to start talking about diversity more as providers to support the dieticians that are black in our field. We should be thinking about how we can lift them up and move forward as a profession. As a white provider, I was silent last week. I wanted to listen and really think about how I could help our profession best move forward. One of the statistics that came across my Instagram feed was that only 2.3% of dietitians are black. I knew the statistic was low, but I honestly did not know just how low it really is. 2.3% is not okay, it’s disgraceful. It is so important for dietitians to realize that we can have an impact in increasing the diversity in our field. I know that I want to support Diversify Dietetics in this mission, so I am so excited to re-air this episode with Tamara. She gives us so many different things to think about in this episode to help us better support dietitians of color.  Some of the topics discussed include: How Diversify Dietetics is passionate about empowering students and professionals of color to help them become the leaders of the next generation in dietetics. Why micro-aggression and unconscious bias can create a barrier to learning and creativity for students of color in all-white learning environments. Jennifer is thrilled to welcome Tamara Melton to share her game-changing mission of diversifying the dietetics industry, on this episode of the Pursuing Private Practice Podcast. Co-founder of Diversify Dietetics, a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing the racial and ethnic diversity in the field of nutrition, Tamara shares the story of its launch in April 2018 and why it is so needed. With an academic background of teaching nutrition at a university in Atlanta, Tamara shines a light on the lack of diversity in the demographic profile of dietitians, and why that is not only a barrier to attracting new students, but also creates a lack of diverse practitioners to help people of color. With full acknowledgement of how the industry is currently not reflective of the diversity of people it serves, Tamara and Jennifer discuss the dire need for more diverse providers to refer to. “There was no organization out there that is doing what needs to be done to successfully attract, recruit, and retain students, interns and professionals of color.” – Tamara Melton You’ll hear how, along with co-founder Deanna Belleny, Diversify Dietetics was created to provide a community to attract, encourage, and empower students and young professionals of color who were seeking careers in the field of nutrition and dietetics. With a mission to break down the boundaries of stereotypical dietitians, its goal is also to better serve people of cultural diversity who might not otherwise seek out care, or seek out practitioners they identify with regardless of their level of training. Tamara speaks to the incredible opportunity for diverse practitioners to fill this gap in the industry. Addressing the practical concerns of dietetics as a lucrative career choice, Tamara explains why Diversify Dietetics also helps support entrepreneurship with business training, to attract more diverse students to the industry and take the risk of starting a private practice. Now, as a community and a point of contact for anyone who’s looking for a dietitian of color in any state, Tamara shares her hopes and dedication to continuing the diversification of dietitians. “We wanted to create an organization that would create an answer to any obstacle that students or professionals of color might come up against as they’re getting through their educational pathway, and trying to anchor themselves in this profession.” – Tamara Melton Some of the topics discussed include: How Diversify Dietetics is passionate about empowering students and professionals of color to help them become the leaders of the next generation in dietetics. Why micro-aggression and unconscious bias can create a barrier to learning and creativity for students of color in all-white learning environments. Bernie and I tackle a listener question on intermittent fasting - is it a diet in disguise and why is it so dang popular? Hoda and Jenna began an IF challenge on TODAY show recently.  Tune in to hear Bernie break his silence about what drove him to step out of the public and “hide” after The Biggest Loser (spoiler: it’s related to fasting). I confess to a Big Mistake I made during the WIND Workshop (a few, actually), what to expect at the DC WIND Symposium, and why I’ve shifted my stance on working with brands and company partners (who have, thus far, made most of this possible). I share an anecdote about something I’ve learned since hosting the WIND Workshop (and why I’ll be re-recording one of these sessions), and also share this important quote from an eloquent essay by the author known as  Your Fat friend on Medium: “Beyond your good intentions, “the last acceptable form of discrimination” tells me that you believe racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism are all completed chapters, and that they have closed for all of us. But our attitudes are not so simple, our intent not foundational, and our history not so straightforward.” Join us for the DC WIND Symposium in September! Today, we’re talking to Deanna Belleny, MPH, RDN, co-founder of Diversify Dietetics - an organization dedicated to increasing diversity in the field of nutrition by empowering students and young professionals from underrepresented minority groups to join the next generation of nutrition experts.   Deanna completed her bachelor's degree, dietetic internship, and masters degree in Houston, Texas and has loved working in such a diverse city (ranked as the most diverse city in the nation but who's counting!) Since her dietetic internship she noticed that the nutrition profession is not particularly diverse. It's quite the opposite. In fact, ONLY 9% of RDNs and NDTRs identifying as non-white. This is in stark contrast to the shifting demographic of the U.S.     In the spring of 2018, Deanna connected with Tamara Melton, MS, RDN, and they created Diversify Dietetics out of a need they saw was not being met. They set out to create a community to attract, encourage and empower students and young professionals of color who were seeking careers in the field of nutrition and dietetics.   In addition to her work with Diversify Dietetics, Deanna works full-time at Harvard Medical School. We had such a great conversation about ways to solve the diversity problem in the nutrition field, and we’re so grateful for the opportunity to share her story and the mission of Diversify Dietetics.   In this episode, we talk about… Why it is so important to increase ethnic representation in the nutrition field. How many of our “healthy eating” principles are eurocentric and miss the mark for a lot of people. Common obstacles non-white students face when embarking on a career in nutrition. Why it’s so important to educate mentors, teachers and hiring directors to diversify the nutrition field. ...and more!   RESOURCES: Diversify Dietetics Website: https://www.diversifydietetics.org/ Follow Diversify Dietetics on Instagram: http://instagram.com/diversifydietetics Like Diversify Dietetics on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/diversifydietetics/ Subscribe to the Feed Me The Facts Podcast: https://www.diversifydietetics.org/podcast/ Our Idea of Healthy Eating Excludes Other Cultures, and That's a Problem by Tamara Melton, MS, RDN, co-founder of Diversify Dietetics   NOTES FROM LES: Follow @curvycurl and @annaclausenfitness for Seattle community fitspo! Today on Body Kindness we’re talking about the need to increase diversity in the field of dietetics and you’ll learn why it matters (including for anyone who is working on Body Kindness and stepping away from diets and weight-focused counseling). Tamara Melton is a dietitian on a mission. She wants to bring diversity to the field of dietetics so that we can all do a better job at helping the people we serve. Tamara’s announcing a new non-profit, Diversify Dietetics, and sharing how you can get involved. The bottom line is we will all do a better job at enhancing the health and well-being of others when everyone is represented -- size, race, ethnicity, gender, ability, sexual identity. Learn more about Diversify Dietetics: Website | Facebook | Instagram About Tamara: Tamara Melton is a registered dietitian and educator, and has worked in higher education for over 10 years. During undergrad and grad school Tamara noticed how much the field of nutrition lacked diversity. Tamara noticed students of color who desired to study nutrition met upon barriers not uncommon to people of color. Tamara made it a goal to work with students of color who are first generation college students and first generation American - Tamara is both of these. She has recently co-founded Diversify Dietetics with Deanna Belleny to help students of color who have a goal to enter the field of nutrition and dietetics. She firmly believes that increasing the diversity in the field of nutrition (and all health professions) will in turn improve the quality of care for clients and patients.
