Big Idea: Growing your relationship with Jesus will also grow every other relationship. 1 Corinthians 7:1-9I. Sex can't take the place of Jesus 1 Corinthians 7:1-2Now in response to the matters you wrote about: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.” But because sexual immorality is so common, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman should have sexual relations with her own husband.II. A spouse can't replace Jesus1 Corinthians 7:3-5A husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise a wife to her husband. A wife does not have the right over her own body, but her husband does. In the same way, a husband does not have the right over his own body, but his wife does. Do not deprive one another—except when you agree for a time, to devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again; otherwise, Satan may tempt you because of your lack of self-control.III. Singleness is a gift from Jesus1 Corinthians 7:6-7I say this as a concession, not as a command. I wish that all people were as I am. But each has his own gift from God, one person has this gift, another has that.IV. Self-control is only possible through Jesus 1 Corinthians 7:8-9I say to the unmarried and to widows: It is good for them if they remain as I am. But if they do not have self-control, they should marry, since it is better to marry than to burn with desire.Next Steps: Believe: I surrender my life to Jesus today.Become: I surrender my relationships to Jesus today.Be Sent: I will help someone develop a relationship with Jesus this week. Discussion Questions: What is your most important relationship right now?  Why? Do your most important relationships always come easily? Has Jesus ever radically changed one of your relationships? If so, explain.Do you view single people as missing something in their lives? If singleness is a gift from God, can marriage also be a gift from God?Where do you need relationship self-control today?Surrender control of all your relationships to the Holy Spirit this week

[Galatians 5:13-18]  Christians stay in step with the Spirit and walk through the “war”.  We are not free to sin; we are freed from sin. [Galatians 5:19-21; 1 John 1:9]  What you choose to feed or starve will win.  Bringing our junk into the light leads to God making it right.  Staying in step with the Spirit leads to bearing fruit naturally. [Galatians 5:22-26; John 15:5]  Belonging and abiding keep us in step with the Spirit.   Next Step Questions: 1. Has Jesus set you free? 2. Are you staying in step with the Spirit? 3. Will you follow the Spirit this week and bear fruit for His glory?

Bible Reading: Isaiah 64:5-6; 2 Corinthians 5:15-21"We're freezing!" Cyrus announced as he and his brothers burst through the door. "The three of you are covered in slush!" said Mom."Did you see the snowman we made?" Elim asked. "Ranny wanted to eat the carrot nose, but we wouldn't let him. We had to come inside early because he's hungry again." Elim grinned at his two-year-old brother. "Snack?" Ransom squeaked.Mom handed the boys bowls of apple slices. "The bath is ready! I'll wash Ranny first."After snacks and baths, Mom hauled a bag to the living room. "What's in there?" Cyrus asked. "Open it and see." Mom winked. "Robes!" Elim yelled. The boys wiggled into their cozy robes, then handed Mom hers and Ransom's. "I love robe season," said Elim. "I was just reading about robes during Bible time!" Cyrus pulled his Bible off the couch and opened it to the bookmarked page. "It's from Isaiah 61, verse 10: 'I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness.'" "What does righteousness mean again?" Elim asked. "It means being right with God and free from guilt in His eyes," Mom answered. "Remember what people had to do in the Old Testament to be righteous before God?" "Make sacrifices," Elim responded solemnly. "But it wasn't good enough! All the good things we do are like filthy rags compared to God's goodness." Cyrus picked up his soaked-through dirty sock with a wrinkled nose. "Then God sent Jesus to die for us! He sacrificed His own Son to save us. So, that verse in Isaiah I read was talking about God's promise to be fulfilled in Jesus," Cyrus mused. "Exactly." Mom nodded. "Since Jesus is perfect, He became the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. When we put our trust in Him, He takes our sins away and covers us with His robe of righteousness. What do we become in Jesus?" "A new creation." Elim flapped his robe sleeves. "Ranny needs his robe, Mom!" Mom laughed as Ransom started running around the living room in circles. "The first one who catches him gets to put his robe on him!" –Savannah Coleman How About You?Has Jesus covered you in His robe of righteousness? The Bible says that all the things we do to try to make ourselves good in God's eyes are like filthy rags. The only way we can become righteous is through Jesus. When we trust in Him, God no longer sees our sins when He looks at us, but the perfect sacrifice of His Son. He is honored and praised by many as He fulfills prophecy by riding in on a colt. Jesus goes into the temple and upsets the Jewish leaders by overturning the money tables and healing the lame and blind. The next day the leaders question Him, but they are silenced by His wisdom. He goes on to tell them two parables. The first is about two sons, one of whom said he would do good and then did not do it. This was an indictment of these chief priests and scribes. The second story is about vine growers who decide to kill the owner's son to seize his inheritance. This is a prophecy of what the Jews are planning to do to God's Son.  The contrast in this chapter is striking. So many followers worship Jesus as He enters the city. He heals many in the temple and they rejoice in Him. They believe in Him, and they will enjoy life in His kingdom. At the same time, the men in the temple are disrespecting the Father and have a fervent hatred for the Son. They question Him and seek to accuse Him. This same Jesus invokes two very different reactions. Sadly, Jesus knows they will not repent. He tells parables and quotes Scripture to indicate that the kingdom will be removed from them. Christ would be a rock of foundation for some and would crush others. They made their choice. Have you?  All powerful God, Creator, and Sustainer, thank you for sending Jesus to be our Savior and King. His message is strong and demanding. But Father, He is also the source of all grace and peace. So many in this world fight His teaching and seek to eliminate Him and seize their inheritance. Great God, may we forever forsake a life apart from Jesus. Help us to always stand upon the Rock and never be crushed by it. Father, will you lead us today to tell someone about the two paths of life and show them and teach them to choose Jesus?  Thought Questions:  -       If you were alive in Jesus' day, would you have laid your coat on the road and praised Him as He entered? How can that spirit be shown today? -       Jesus said His disciples could move mountains “if you have faith and do not doubt.” How can your prayer life show God you believe that? -       How can you avoid a hard heart that sees the evidence but simply will not believe it? Has Jesus convinced you of His Lordship?

Sermon Audio – Cross of Grace

Luke 2:41-52Now every year his parents went to Jerusalem for the festival of the Passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up as usual for the festival. When the festival was ended and they started to return, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. Assuming that he was in the group of travelers, they went a day's journey. Then they started to look for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for him. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him they were astonished; and his mother said to him, “Child, why have you treated us like this? Look, your father and I have been searching for you in great anxiety.” He said to them, “Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?” But they did not understand what he said to them. Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. His mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favor. I love that – after all of that drama, excitement, fear, and anxiety – after the embarrassment and worry of having lost Jesus – after having traveled and searched and knocked on who knows how many doors – after calling his name in anger, frustration, fear and desperation, God knows how many times, before finally finding him calmly chilling, safe, sound, and smug, in the Temple – Mary “treasured all these things in her heart.” Isn't that just so sweet and motherly of her?And I kind of like that we don't hear a word about Joseph, because I get to use my imagination about his response. I bet Joseph was so pissed and so frustrated – about having to turn around, having to waste all of that time, losing all of those good travel days. He probably missed some work and lost some money because of this nonsense. I imagine him mumbling and groaning and kicking the dirt 20 paces ahead of Mary and Jesus, for three days, all the way back to Nazareth; like a First Century Clark Griswold, while Mary “treasured all of these things in her heart.”You can imagine it right? So stressed … so anxious … so afraid … so guilt-ridden over having lost the boy; or having not double-checked on the boy; or having trusted that the boy – the Son of God, for crying out loud – Emmanuel – which means “GOD WITH US” – would actually BE WITH THEM, like he was supposed to be. I imagine Joseph, muttering and mumbling, angrily under his breath, “Name him Jesus, because he's going to save his people from their sins.” He just LOST ME four days and a week's wages! How's HE gonna “save his people from anything?!?!” Gimme a break! I'll believe it when I see it.Maybe I'm projecting. Surely I digress. But seriously, I made a comment during our Blue Christmas worship service – that annual worship service for the weary, for the sadness and struggle that is also so much a part of the holidays for so many – I said something about how glad I was to see those who showed up, show up, that night. And about how I wish that that service had been as full as I knew it would be on Christmas Eve, which was filled to over-flowing as many of you know, three times over.I said that because I knew on Christmas Eve, we'd have a bumper crop of those folks who come every year “for the festival” – for the pomp and circumstance, for the familiar carols, for the nostalgia of “Silent Night” by candlelight, and for whatever grace and good feels we find in all of that. And it's not nothing. I'm always so glad that they and their families join us, and that we're able to welcome them like we do.But I always want them to know that we're about that kind of goodness and grace year-round in the Church. And I always wonder how long all of that goodness and grace – all of those good feels – last in the hearts and minds and lives of those who join us once a year, or even just every once in a while.Do they make it out of the parking lot – those good feels? Do they last through the night, past Christmas morning, and beyond the opening of all those gifts? Has Jesus gotten lost in the shuffle, left behind in the Temple, as it were; gone missing in the mix that is life in this busy, scary, anxious world we share? And of course, I wonder the same about myself and about all of us, too, who practice our faith more regularly and with such good intentions.Because the truth is, that we all have – or will have – those moments when Jesus seems to go missing … when he doesn't seem as near as he did on Christmas Eve … when we have taken his presence for granted, like even his parents were able to do … and when we have looked for his love, his peace, his hope, his gracious presence in all the wrong places, or not at all … when the circumstances of our lives so easily crowd him out or make him hard to find. And today makes me hope we'll remember that we can always find him here … in the temple, in the Church, in God's house of worship.Don't get me wrong. I'm certain that you can meet Jesus during a walk in the woods, or on the golf course, or sitting in your recliner, by the fire, with a candle and your favorite Bible. But Jesus reminds me today that this is holy ground; that God's house is where he'll always be – in Word, in the sacraments, and in the fellowship of believers who look for him here. And I take that as a great comfort and as a holy charge and calling, too. And I hope you do as well.I hope that we're doing our best – on Christmas Eve and every day – to be sure the love of God, in Jesus, is being made known in this place, always in thought, word, and deed. That through our ministry and mission it's clear Jesus is waiting for whoever comes searching for him; that we're proclaiming his grace with no strings attached; that we're listening for his guidance; that we're receiving and offering his kind of mercy and forgiveness; that we're working for his sort of justice, peace and equity in the world; that we're welcoming others the way we've been welcomed, ourselves. I heard a bit on NPR's “Morning Edition” yesterday, about the hymn “Amazing Grace.” Apparently, New Year's Day, 1773, was the first time that most familiar hymn was ever performed – 251 years ago.And I never wondered about the lyric “I once was lost, but now am found” before, in the context of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, and this journey from Jerusalem, as we hear it, so soon after Christmas. “I once was lost, but now am found.”It could mean a million different things for any one of us – at any given time or season of our lives. I wonder what it might have meant for Jesus way back when. Did he feel as lost as his parents thought he was or as any pre-teen kid can feel at that time in their life? Is that why he made his way back to the Temple in the first place? To find some comfort … some company … some holy ground … some kind of peace and love and support he wasn't finding elsewhere in those days? And why wasn't God's house – the Temple – the first place Mary and Joseph thought to find him in?I hope this is always a safe place where you and I – and others – feel welcome to come for worship when it's filled to the brim, when it's just the regulars, or when we just need to be alone with our God.I hope this is sacred space where we can ask hard questions and long for answers, even if they don't come easily, as fast as we'd like, or at all.I hope this is a place where we can find our footing on a bit of holy ground when we need it, where we can search for good news and find the kind of grace that's hard to come by anywhere else in the world.I hope this is a place where we can always find the Jesus who shows up at Christmas, but whose presence lives and moves and breathes among us, always. And I hope this is a place where we let ourselves be found, too, by the abundant, amazing love and grace of God – in such a way that we are clothed with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, patience and that same love – so much so that others will find us here; that they'll come and see the difference it makes for us – and what a difference it can make in the world when we let it.Amen. Merry Christmas.

After coming down the mountain of transfiguration where Jesus revealed his divinity to his inner circle, they are immediately plunged into the clamoring crowd, full of accusing scribes and tormenting demons. His disciples had failed and are confused. Mark recounts this story to the first century church under persecution from a seemingly unstoppable opponent in the Roman empire, is there any hope? Has Jesus failed? Mark reminds them, and us, that we must rely on prayer, not our own strength and wisdom, to overcome the trials we face as we follow Jesus.

Read OnlineAfter Jesus left the synagogue, he entered the house of Simon. Simon's mother-in-law was afflicted with a severe fever, and they interceded with him about her. He stood over her, rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up immediately and waited on them.  Luke 4:38–39If you wanted to share some important message with a group of people, you would first need to get their attention. This could be done through a variety of means, such as through a charismatic personality, a powerfully moving story, a heroic act of virtue, or anything else that leaves people impressed or even amazed. Once you have their complete attention, you can share the message you want to share. This is what Jesus did in today's Gospel.Jesus began His public ministry in Nazareth, but the people of his hometown rejected Him from their Synagogue. Therefore, He immediately traveled some 20 miles on foot to Capernaum, a town just north of the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus would spend much of His time. In this first visit to Capernaum, at the beginning of His public ministry, Jesus taught in their Synagogue, cast out a demon, and then went to the home of Simon (who eventually was given the name Peter) to perform His first recorded physical healing in Luke's Gospel. He cured Simon's mother-in-law, who suffered from a severe fever. Then, later that evening, many people brought to Jesus the sick and possessed, and Jesus “Laid his hands on each of them and cured them.” He certainly got their attention. And the next morning, as Jesus was preparing to leave Capernaum after this first visit during His public ministry, the people tried to convince Jesus to stay. However, Jesus said to them, “To the other towns also I must proclaim the good news of the Kingdom of God, because for this purpose I have been sent.”Has Jesus ever gotten your complete attention? Though you most likely have never witnessed a miraculous healing first hand or seen a demon being cast out of one who was possessed, Jesus still wants your full attention. He wants you to be so amazed at Him and so impressed by Him that you find yourself seeking Him out so as to be more fully fed by His divine teaching. Some people give their full attention to our Lord after a powerful experience on a retreat. Others are struck by a powerful sermon. And there will be countless other ways by which Jesus has gotten your attention so as to fill you with a desire to listen to Him and be with Him. Such experiences lay a wonderful foundation by which we are continually invited to turn to our Lord. If this is not an experience to which you can relate, then ask yourself the question “Why?” Why haven't you been amazed by our Lord to the point that you fervently seek Him out so as to listen to His nourishing Word?Reflect, today, upon this initial way by which our Lord got the attention of the people of Capernaum. Though some would eventually turn from Him, many did become faithful followers on account of these personal experiences. Reflect upon any way that you have encountered our Lord powerfully in the past. Have you allowed that experience to become an ongoing motivation for you to seek Him out? And if you cannot point to any such experience, beg our Lord to give you an interior drive to desire more of Him and to be fed by His holy Word and divine presence. My miraculous Lord, I know that You desire my complete attention in life. And I know that I am often distracted by many things that compete with You. Give me the grace I need to become so amazed by You and by Your action in my life that I fervently seek You out so as to be continually nourished by Your holy Word and divine presence in my life. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2024 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Do We Trust Jesus?Luke 5:4-5 “And when he had ceased speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word, I will let down the nets.”I like this verse because it reminds me that I am not the only one who argues with the Lord. I am not the only one with a reply other than “Yes” when Jesus asks me to do something.  Simon had been out fishing all night and had not caught any fish. He was tired and, I am sure, very discouraged. Then Jesus asked him to push his boat back into the sea a bit so that Jesus could stand on it and talk to all those on the shore. Simon did so.Then, after Jesus had finished teaching those on the shore, He told Simon to go out into the deep and let down his nets for a catch. Can you imagine how frustrated Simon felt and how tired he probably was? He was washing his nets out to call it a day when Jesus climbed on His boat, and who knows how long Jesus preached before telling Simon to go out into the deep. Then He tells Simon to put his net out into the water again. Jesus is a carpenter, and Simon is a fisherman. I am sure He didn't understand why He should do what this man said, and yet He did it anyway and yielded more fish than their nets could hold, and the nets began to break. There were so many fish that they filled both boats so full that the boats began to sink.Have you ever been in a situation like this before? Have you ever felt like God or Jesus was asking you to do something you really didn't want to? There could be many reasons why we don't want to do what He asks us to do. Simon was tired and frustrated. He might have also felt that his efforts were in vain. But despite all these, he obeyed. This story reminds us that even when we are tired, frustrated, or feel like our efforts are in vain, we should still obey God's word, for He has a plan that we might not understand. In this verse, the Lord knew that if Peter obeyed him, he would catch more fish than He could have imagined. God knows the same thing about you and me. He knows that if we obey Him, he will provide more than we need, whether in our jobs, families, or friends. Where is God calling you?  What has He been asking you to do, and yet you have been ignoring Him because you have tried it before many times, and so you figure it won't work this time either? What areas of your life are you desperate to see change? In this verse, Peter is desperate to catch some fish and has tried all night with no luck. When he listened to the Lord and then saw how many fish they caught, he finally recognized Jesus for who he really was. Peter recognized Jesus as Lord. It says in verse 8, “But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” Has Jesus ever helped you come face to face with your sinfulness? Has He ever answered one of your prayers in a way that there was no question it was God who answered that prayer?I have had this happen many times. I am grateful to my parents because they told us about times in their lives when this happened to them, and so I began to be aware of when it was happening in my life, too. We miss so much when we are not looking for it. When you intentionally try to see God working in your life, you will see God working in your life. Notice I didn't say you might see God. I am 100% confident that you will see it if you intentionally look for where God is working in your life. This is the main reason why I do Witness Wednesdays on this podcast. If you hear how God works in other people's lives, you will become more aware of how He works in your life, too!I can see how God worked his miracles in my son Noah's surgery and recovery. Actually, how we even discovered he needed surgery. Noah was having headaches, and they were treating them with medicine, and that wasn't really working. The neurologist ordered an MRI to ensure it wasn't too serious. If she hadn't ordered the MRI, she would have never found out that he had a Chiari malformation. You can only see them on an MRI. Then we were supposed to have surgery at a hospital that was an hour and 40 minutes away from our house. The surgeon could not get Noah on his surgical calendar until July. Noah wants to go to college in Europe at the end of the summer. We asked if they could put in a referral for Mass General Hospital, as it is less than an hour's drive. They put in the referral, and after we got the records transferred, they set up a pairing with a surgeon who does both pediatric and adult surgeries. They were able to get him scheduled within a few weeks. Also, they scheduled him for after spring break, so I was able to take Noah to England to look at some colleges. It was amazing timing that only God could have arranged. Then, on the day of the surgery, Noah had an awesome nurse who happened to be his birthday twin. She was so kind and distracted him from thinking about the surgery. The surgeon said it was an excellent surgery, and he thinks Noah will be very pleased with it. Noah was in the hospital for four days and was not really in much pain at all. He could walk the halls, get up and use the restroom, talk to the nurses. He thought he would be in bed for the first week or two when he came home. But he has felt great. He has had to sleep more than he wanted also, yet he was happy he was able to sit up in his computer chair for long periods of time without pain. He said he felt much better than he thought he would and that he is glad they did the surgery as he can feel that there is more room in the back of his head now.Praise God—He is so good. He not only helped arrange the surgery, the timing, and the doctor, but He also ensured a successful surgery and a painless and speedy recovery—just what we prayed for! I don't know what you are praying for or what you are waiting for. Whatever it is, I want you to know that God knows what it is, and He is working on it for you. He is figuring out how to get that for you in His perfect timing and also in accordance with your plans as well.God knew that Peter needed fish that day. He knew he was discouraged, tired, and probably angry. God cared about Peter's needs and Peter's wants. This miracle happened for two reasons. First, God cared about Peter and his needs and wants. Second, Peter let down the nets. Peter said yes. He didn't understand why he was doing it. He didn't know what Jesus knew. He did it because Jesus asked Him to, and because of that obedience, Jesus made it fruitful. What is Jesus calling you to do? Has He given you the answer to your problem, and yet you are afraid to let down your net? What if the answer to your prayers is on the other side of your obedience to do what Jesus is telling you to do? What if the thing getting in the way of you catching all the fish is your reluctance to obey Jesus? What if you took that step today and did what He has asked you to do? What could you catch in your net?Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless everyone listening to this episode today. Lord, please show us what things you are calling us to do and then give us the grace to accomplish them. Help give us the courage to take that step of faith, trusting that you will fill our nets. We love you, Lord, and we are sorry for not doing as you ask. You are Lord of Lords and King of Kings, and we ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus's holy name, Amen!Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus. Bible Reading: 1 John 5:10-13Bruno frowned and kicked at a stone as he walked home from school. As he approached Mr. Burk's house, he saw his Sunday school teacher working in the yard. "Hi there, Bruno," said Mr. Burk. "How are you today?""Not great," muttered Bruno. He shuffled his toe in the dirt. "I'm always getting into trouble at school." He sighed. "Since I've been coming to your Sunday school class, I've been trying to change and be good--but I just can't seem to do it. Today I had to stay in at recess because I talked back to a teacher."Mr. Burk leaned on his rake. "I'm sorry to hear that," he said.Bruno shrugged. "Like I said, I'm trying to do better, but I guess it's hopeless.""Oh, no, no, no!" said Mr. Burk. "It's not hopeless. I think you're just depending on the wrong things to help you." He picked up a small dead branch that had fallen from a tree. "I was going to plant some fruit trees out back. I'll water them and put fertilizer around them, and soon they'll bear juicy peaches and apples for me to eat." He held up the dead branch. "Why don't you help me plant this one?"Bruno laughed. "That's a dead stick. You know it won't grow anything."Mr. Burk looked at the stick. "True," he said. "A dead stick can't produce fruit. And you know what, Bruno? You may be like this stick--you don't have true life either if you haven't trusted Jesus as your Savior. Have you done that?""Well, no, I…I…" Bruno stammered. "I thought if I just went to church and read the Bible and did stuff like that, I'd be all right.""You said you want to do better, but you need Jesus for that," said Mr. Burk. "Even if you read the whole Bible and go to church and pray, you can't produce good fruit unless you have spiritual life that only comes through Jesus. You need Him to free you from sin and give you the power of the Holy Spirit so you can live in a way that shows others His love." Mr. Burk smiled at Bruno. "Would you like me to explain how you can receive real life through Jesus?"Bruno looked at the dead stick lying on the lawn and nodded.–Mary Rose PearsonHow About You?Has Jesus given you spiritual life? Are you bearing good fruit by the power of the Holy Spirit? Or do you just try hard to be good only to fail? It is Palm Sunday where we remember Jesus entering Jerusalem as the start of Holy Week. The crowds expected Jesus to start a revolution, but it did not happen the way many thought it would. Think back. Has Jesus ever answered a prayer in a different way than you asked? It is a hard question. God's plan, however, is often different than our own and Holy Week is a story along those lines. Bible Reading: Ezekiel 11:19-20Riley couldn't believe the man up front was still talking. He sighed and looked at Mom, who was listening intently. She had become a Christian a few months earlier, and she'd been making Riley go to church with her ever since. I wish things were the way they were before, Riley thought. "So what did you think of the sermon?" asked Mom as they got in the car after church. Riley shrugged. "It was fine, I guess.""You're not sure how you feel about all this, are you?" asked Mom."I don't know," said Riley. "I just don't see what it has to do with me. My life is fine the way it is." And it was even better before I had to get up for church every Sunday, he thought. When they stopped at a traffic light, they saw a man holding a sign that said Hungry Please Help. "Do you think that man knows he's needy?" Mom asked. Riley stared at her. "Um, yeah, Mom. I think he does."Mom shrugged. "Well, I was just like him once, but I didn't know it."Riley was startled. "You were?" He knew his mom's life had been tough, but he didn't think it had ever been so bad that she'd had to beg for money on the street. Mom nodded. "Yep. And then one day someone found me and gave me a whole new life.""What?" Riley could hardly believe his ears. "Who?""Jesus!" said Mom. She smiled as Riley stared at her in confusion. "I'm not talking about needing money to buy food," she said. "I'm talking about being hungry and needy in my heart. I was lost and alone, and I didn't even realize how miserable I was. But when I found Jesus, He made me like new, and when I look back on my old life, I can see how much I needed Him to fill me with hope and joy. That's what Jesus did for me, and He can do the same for you."Riley was silent for a while before he spoke. "I guess I'll have to think about it some more.""Okay," said Mom. She parked the car next to a sub shop. "In the meantime, let's go buy that man a sandwich." – Courtney LasaterHow About You?Has Jesus given you a new life? Last night we continued our Reforesting series by remembering which tree changed everything: The cross. Reading Romans 3, we can find three things we can confess: 1. I am a sinner. 2. Jesus is the Savior. 3. Salvation is for me, but not about me. Are you right with God? Has Jesus changed your life? We have all fallen under sin, and the only way we can have right standing with God is through Jesus. The main reason Jesus died on the cross was to bring glory to God, and to demonstrate His righteousness. Jesus was the payment that satisfied the justice of God, and the tree that changed everything was the cross that Jesus bore for us. https://events.bible.com/en/event/edi... After Jesus left the synagogue, he entered the house of Simon. If this is not an experience to which you can relate, then ask yourself the question “Why?” Why haven't you been amazed by our Lord to the point that you fervently seek Him out so as to listen to His nourishing Word? Reflect, today, upon this initial way by which our Lord got the attention of the people of Capernaum. Though some would eventually turn from Him, many did become faithful followers on account of these personal experiences.Reflect upon any way that you have encountered our Lord powerfully in the past. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2023 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Used with permission via RSS feed.

Bible Reading: Psalm 51:7; Galatians 5:16; Ephesians 4:22-24Shearing the sheep was a big deal around the McMillian ranch. It only happened once a year, and Landon loved watching his dad and some of the hired hands shear the sheep. Landon was always fascinated with how still the sheep would stay as they were turned onto their backs. They seemed so relaxed. Once the shearing was done, the sheep were led back out to the pasture, and the wool was gathered up into big bags and sent off to the mill to be cleaned and processed. Soon the wool would be dyed into many different colors and turned into beautiful pieces of clothing and other items. The sheep were always so full of energy after they had that heavy wool taken off it was as if they were little lambs again."We got a good yield of wool this year," Dad told Landon's mom as they sat down for dinner.Dad prayed, and then Landon, talking so fast that Mom could hardly understand him, told her all about the exciting day of sheep shearing. "The dirty, heavy wool just came right off in big layers, and the sheep looked so clean, and it almost looked like they were smiling. They must be happy to have all that old wool off them.""You know, you're right, Landon, and that reminds me of us as Christians," Dad said."What do you mean, Dad?" Landon asked."Well, before we were saved, we were carrying the heavy load of our sin. But when we trusted in Jesus, He removed our sin and made us clean, and He gave us a new life. That means we need to throw off our old, sinful nature--the way we thought and acted before we knew Jesus--and put on our new nature. We do that by trusting the Holy Spirit to renew our thoughts and attitudes and make us more like Jesus.""That's really cool, Dad!"For the rest of the night, Landon thought about what his dad had said. He was so thankful that Jesus had forgiven his sins and washed them all away. Just like the sheep, Landon felt cleaner and lighter. Before going to bed, he prayed and asked the Lord to help him remember to let the Holy Spirit renew his attitude each day. -Lisa FullerHow About You?Has Jesus removed your heavy load of sin? Once you become a Christian by trusting in Him, you begin a new life. Jesus removes your sin and gives you the Holy Spirit, who guides you in living your life. As you follow His leading, you won't be doing what your sinful nature craves. So today, be mindful of your new life in Christ, and let the Holy Spirit guide you and renew your thoughts.Today's Key Verse:This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! (NLT) (2 Corinthians 5:17)Today's Key Thought:Jesus gives us new life
