Black Students in Design (BSD) was created in recognition of the many barriers faced by Black students in the design and architecture fields. Clara James is a recent graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture at the Daniels Faculty of Architecture Landscape and Design at the University of Toronto, Canada. In 2020 Clara founded Black Students in Design, a student-led community for Black students at Daniels. And with the support of the Daniels outreach office and her all Black executive team, Clara successfully developed and executed Building Black Success through Design – a mentorship program for Black high school students interested in design. During her time as a student she worked with the Student Equity Alliance and Equity Committee within the Daniels Faculty, fighting to address anti-Black Racism and equity. Since then, she's worked in the school as an Assistant Studio Technologist helping students with any issues they might have. She is currently the Interim Coordinator of Public Programing and Outreach in the Outreach Office at Daniels. And when she can find the time, she is also a free-lance graphic designer.

As the Ukraine war absorbs the world's attention, Russia has quietly taken over the former Soviet state of Belarus and used it to stage Vladimir Putin's attack on Ukraine. It is a significant victory in this dictator's quest to restore the former Soviet empire. The Biden administration says the greatest threat to America today is white supremacy. Meanwhile, incidents of black violence, black racism and black supremacy are routinely covered up. This points to what truly is the nation's most lethal threat. You have plastic in your body, and it could be hurting your health. New scientific studies show microplastics in lung tissue and blood samples of living people, an unhealthy side effect of the plastification of our planet. Finally, how can you inspire your children to obey God's beautiful law? It's Black History Month and on this episode, I will be sharing a bit of my experience as a Black person living in Canada. I talk about some of the challenges I've had and also the role of allies in stemming the tide of anti-Black racism that seems to be entrenched in our systems and interactions. I've faced walls of silence and awkward questions, but I've also encountered wonderful support from White allies and indigenous Blacks. Yes, there's been sadness but there's also been the joy of experiencing the goodness of humans, both Black and White. This episode is an encouragement to my Black sisters to keep showing up despite the hard road we journey, and to my White sisters to keep walking alongside us as we navigate the minefields of racism.Check the references in the episode transcript to see some of the research on systemic racism in Canada and its impact on child welfare reporting and the education of Black children, especially boys. Thank you so much for listening!References in this episodeCanadian Education Is Steeped in Anti-Black RacismBlack Boys Across the African Diaspora: Child Welfare Considerations and Practice Implications, a study by Chantille Davis, MSW (November 2021)Five charts that show what systemic racism looks like in CanadaPsalm 139:14Please DM me on Instagram or Facebook @judithobatusa to let me know what you thought of this episode.
