A common accusation from pro-abortion advocates is that the pro-life movement does not care for babies or women after birth. Well, on this episode that claim is completely shattered as a woman tells her story about how Students for Life's resource initiative connected her to hope & help at MiraVia. MiraVia provides young women the support they need to embrace motherhood, helps them cultivate friendships with other mothers, and offers them housing completely free of charge until the child is two years old. WOW! P.S. Don't miss our upcoming National Church Simulcast Event, “Standing with Her Sunday,” on August 27, 2023, at 7:00 p.m. ET. The first step in making abortion unthinkable has been taken. Now that the Supreme Court has reversed Roe v. Wade with its ruling in the Dobbs case, it's time to roll up our sleeves and work towards building a culture of life. This is not the time to back off, or as some Christians have suggested, to tone it down. Back in May, at the “Preparing for a Post-Roe World” event at the Wilberforce Weekend, Students for Life president Kristan Hawkins issued a powerful and stirring challenge. Here's Kristan: Friends, tonight, I'm here to ask you to do something that's never been done before in the history of our world. I'm here to ask you, the Church, to join with the pro-life generation to put our nation back together in a post-Roe v. Wade world. And I implore you to help us achieve this mission that has thus far spanned five decades—church by church, city by city, state by state—as we move forward to make abortion unthinkable. Friends, the hour is upon us—something that we have all worked for, that many of you were working for before I was even created. Step one of our mission is almost complete. But there's so many more steps we have to go. And the Church must rise to the challenge, and you are being called to lead it. Make no mistake. The battles that we face in the coming months, the coming weeks will be physical, they'll be political, and they'll be spiritual. In our city streets, the violence that so many support behind the closed doors of the Planned Parenthood will be committed openly. And those in power will look the other way. In statehouses, those who we fought to elect will be forced to finally act to actually cast a vote that will determine the fate of lives. And I predict some of them who say that they're with us will not be so. And in our homes, our daughters and our granddaughters will start to order chemical abortion pills shipped from foreign countries or other states that could very well result in her own injury, infertility, or death. She'll be aborting her child, your grandchild, your great-grandchild in her bathroom, and every morning she'll return to the scene of that crime. In our workplaces, women and men will be hurting from past abortion decisions, and they'll be made to finally reckon with the choice that they made decades ago that they've been suppressing for years. And in our churches, what will we be doing? Will we be a thermostat that can transform the mores of our society—of our country—or will we simply sit back and be a thermometer? I believe it's not too late to become the former, but this relies on you. First, I must ask you to speak truth at your church, especially to this young generation who has never lived in America without legal abortion. Show your youth group the truth about the violence of abortion. Show them how they can actually step up to serve and transform. Convince your pastor—6% of which say that they've given a sermon on abortion in the past year—convince them to speak. Start a ministry for men and women hurting from past abortions. Start a ministry for pregnant and parenting women and men and families in need. A great first step is to join Students for Life and the Colson Center for the national Standing with Her Sunday simulcast. We're going to be launching August 28, and the goal is to get our churches all the tools that they need to support her. The second thing you can do is envision what your community will look like and must look like in the post-Roe era. Ask yourself how your church can step up—what you can do. And I have to warn you—envisioning things is a little dangerous. It's free—doesn't take any money—but it's powerful. Quell the flames of fear that Planned Parenthood is fanning in our nation. Show them we actually have a progressive view for our families and women in America. This is 2022. This is not 1952. No woman in 2022 America should ever have to choose between the life of her child for her education or for her career goals. Tell America about the 3,000 nonviolent pregnancy centers, the more than 400 maternity homes that vastly outnumber the abortion facilities in our country. Tell America about support: AfterAbortion.org, abortionpillreversal.org, standingwithyou.org—all the resources we have in place. This is fundamental. At Students for Life, we've knocked on 120,000 doors in the last year in neighborhoods in 20 cities that surround an abortion facility. And 73% of the neighbors we speak to have no clue that the pregnancy center exists in our community—have never even heard about it. Friends, when the Supreme Court finally reverses its anti-science Roe v. Wade decision, what choice, what decision are you going to make? What course of action will you commit to taking that will help us determine the fate of this cause—the greatest human rights struggle in the history of our life? Tonight, I implore you. Make a decision. Church, make a decision for a positive peace—to stand for innocent children and their mothers. Get to work to ensure that no woman stands alone in a post-Roe America. That was Students for Life president Kristan Hawkins speaking at our preparing for a post-Roe future event. This Monday episode begins with tales from the red-eye road and the line at the bagel shop. Then it's on to the second women's major winner of the year, Minjee Lee, who ran away from a strong leaderboard in a record-setting U.S. Women's Open win. Her Sunday stroll to what she called the most important trophy she wanted combined with Billy Horschel's relatively dominant win in Columbus provokes a debate about whether it's reductive or insulting to call runaway victories boring as competitions. Jerry Kelly is hailed as the Alker Stopper. Then they pivot to Kevin Na resigning from the PGA Tour, whether Rickie's next, and some scuttlebutt about the OWGR system further marginalizing the Asian Tour as a response.
Bible Reading: Romans 5:6-9Mia stepped into the department store, her eyes instantly fixing on the crystal music box glittering in the sunlight pouring in through the window. She had been searching for a birthday gift for her sister, Tarrin, and the music box would be perfect--if only she had the money to pay for it.Mia picked up the box, admiring its delicate beauty as she lifted the lid. A ballerina sprang up, her tulle skirt sparkling as she twirled in the air. Then a loud noise from behind Mia caused her to jump and stumble backward. The box slipped from her grasp and shattered on the floor."You're going to have to pay for that," said a clerk standing behind the counter.Mia's cheeks flushed with shame as she met the young man's cold stare. She didn't have that kind of money. Her mother was already working extra shifts just to pay the bills. "But I can't," Mia said in a quivering voice. The man glowered at her, then reached for the phone. "No, please!" Mia's eyes filled with tears. "Don't call anyone. I didn't mean to--" "I'll pay for it," said a voice from behind her.Mia quickly turned around. Her eyes widened as she saw her sister walk up to the counter, holding out money."You can't do this, Tarrin," Mia insisted. "It was my fault. I should pay for it." She knew Tarrin was saving up money to buy a car. Tarrin smiled and handed the man the money."Why are you doing this?" Mia asked."Because I love you," Tarrin answered.A warm feeling flooded Mia's body as her heart swelled with gratitude. Her Sunday school teacher's words came to mind about how God loved her so much that He sent His Son, Jesus, to take the punishment for her sins. Jesus paid the price for the wrong things she did, even though she didn't deserve it."Thank you, Tarrin," Mia said as the clerk printed a receipt. And thank you, Jesus, she prayed silently, for paying the price of my sin. -Ann GardeHow About You?Have you ever broken something you couldn't pay for? Each one of us is a sinner who's done wrong, and we could never pay the price of sin ourselves. So Jesus paid it for us! Because of His great love for us, He willingly died on the cross to take the punishment for our sins. Have you trusted Him as your Savior? If not, trust Him today, knowing the price of your sin has been paid in full. (To learn more, click the "Good News!" button in the right column of this page.) Changing can take forms in many ways. From small elements to life-altering events, we constantly look for ways to better our lives. For today's guest, a decades-long search for a church led her to a solid and lifelong relationship with the Heavenly Father. Cheryl Niedzwiedz learned changing is more than a Sunday activity, and that's the story she shares on today's episode. Cheryl had fond memories growing up in the church. Her earliest church memories are a feeling of warmth while singing worship songs. She loved reading scripture, and she felt wrapped in love every time they were about Jesus. When she blew out the candle for her eighth birthday, she wished for the wisdom of Solomon. However, she quickly realized discrepancies in the way people acted outside of church. The people who attended church seemed like different people Monday - Saturday. They weren't trying to be Christ-like outside of Sunday school. Cheryl learned that confessing her sins to the Father made them forgiven. But it bothered her that people would commit the same sins for the same reasons every time. Why would the heavenly father forgive you if you didn't intend to change? She realized her childhood church was not for her when she was ten. Her Sunday school teacher was teaching about Jesus when a voice came to her and said, “this is not it.” At 13 years old, she began to attend other churches to find one where she felt comfortable. She went to many different churches over twenty years, and it wasn't until her early thirties that missionaries of the Latter-Day Saints knocked on her door. They explained the belief in changing after repentance. They explained the power of prayer. In these conversations, Cheryl felt calm and hopeful, knowing these thoughts were true. It was the warm feeling she remembered as a child. When she came to church, she didn't find perfect people. But she found a group of caring, supportive people whose goal was to be more Christ-like. Since joining the church, she has felt like there was a lightning strike in her heart. While her family was initially skeptical, they were pleased and accepted it once they saw the positive changes in Cheryl and her life. Now, after fifty years of being in the church, she's still working on changing. But we are all a work in progress. For someone who needs a change in life, especially finding a church, Cheryl recommends praying to the Lord. Because our Heavenly Father will lead us to the answer.
There's nothing like facing your mortality and chronic uncertainty to clarify what's important, and what no longer serves you. How Nancy Jasperse lost over 150 pounds and has kept it off for 2 Years “Love Yourself more. Love yourself more to take care of yourself before others.” “My mother’s death scared me into weight loss research.” “Forgive yourself when you make mistakes and start over. Every day is a new day. Move past it.” In Episode # 10 of the Becoming Elli Podcast, Jill and Chris interviewed Nancy Jasperse about: Her struggles with weight Yo Yo dieting a teen, into college and gaining weight through 3 pregnancies How she cleaned up her lifestyle What she eats now to maintain the weight loss Where she gets her exercise inspiration How she navigates restaurant meals Her Sunday meal prep routine In the tips sections, Jill and Chris share their thoughts about restaurant eating to maintain a weight loss. Nancy said she has always struggled with her weight. This is her story: “As far back as elementary school, I was always the biggest and sometimes tallest kid in the class. I think my love of food started around 4th grade or so. My father was in the Navy and was out to sea often. When he was gone my mother used food as both a reward and a coping mechanism when things didn't go as planned for me. I don't fault her for this, she was raised the same way.” By high school, I was maxed out on clothing options. Lane Bryant was the only clothing store I could buy pants. So I decided to diet! I didn't know one thing about nutrition, so I basically starved myself, eating handfuls of raw vegetables and spoonfuls of peanut butter. The weight came off, but of course that wasn't manageable long term. College brought on more yo-yo dieting. With each year, I'd go up and down in weight. Right around my senior year of college, I found myself engaged and excited to plan a wedding. So dieting kicked into high gear. Shortly after getting married, I got pregnant with my first child. It was during this extremely stressful first year of motherhood, my weight gain exploded! Instead of bouncing back, I gained 100lbs. It was the first time I'd see the 300lb number on the scale. As scary as seeing that number was, it didn't stop me from getting pregnant two addition times -- High risk from start to finish each time. Just as before, with each baby brought on a stressful year. I gained 72 more pounds. My highest weight was a whopping 372lbs. When I saw this number, I was terrified. I didn't know where to start. I knew nothing about weight loss and maintaining a healthy weight. But I decided the best thing I could do was try and reduce what I was eating and take a small walk each day with my children. Within the first few days, I'd lost 20lbs. Looking back, I know this was a lot of water weight and my body telling me it was so happy to have some water and a walk! Sadly, what happened next in my life changed everything. My mother died unexpected. One day I was playing Scrabble at my dining room table with her and the next day she had a massive stroke. She was 54. I was 29 with three children. Her death scared me into weight loss research. I knew I needed to clean up my lifestyle if I intended to watch my children grow up. I wanted to be more active with them, run after them, not be exhausted from simply hauling them out of car seats and walking them into school! Simple tasks at 350+lbs were so very tiring. I researched Weight Watchers, Atkins, Keto, SlimFast, calorie counting, liquid diets, salad only diets, every fad diet you can imagine. I settled on calorie counting. Added MyFitnessPal to my smartphone and started tracking all the food I ate. I continued walking around my neighborhood. And in just a couple of months, I had lost 50lbs. Then the dreaded plateau hit. I was stuck! The research started again. I decided to add lifting a few weights at home and walking. After a few weeks, I broke the plateau. The evolution from 372lbs to just under 200lbs took just over three years. here were several rounds of plateaus and calorie adjustments. I changed up my diet a few times, around every 7 or 8 months to shake up my metabolism. I believe long term weight loss is possible if you're willing to branch out and try new things, both nutritionally and physically. I've maintained my weight loss for just over two years. Lately, I've used the Keto (ketosis) method to keep myself in check. Every now and then I'll check a keto calculator to make sure I'm eating the correct amount of macros/calories. You can find a keto calculator by simply googling "keto calculator" and entering in a few basic pieces of information such as height, weight and age. Such a helpful free tool to use! Just recently I've decided to try to get to 185lbs. Let's cross out fingers and hope I can get there!
