While working as a Director / Senior Merchant at Victoria's Secret, Michelle Cordeiro Grant learned that the $13B lingerie category, in the US alone, was dominated by Victoria's Secret -- and was mostly based on the male gaze. So Grant set out to create a new experience and POV for the category – one she called "Leisurée" (merging the best elements of lingerie, swim and activewear) – and she launched Lively. Lively represents a movement and a lifestyle that has helped the brand cultivate an engaged, enthusiastic community of over 140K ambassadors. Its inclusive size range and affordable price point add to the brand's accessibility. Some exciting moments for the brand include getting acquired for over $100M, and its recent launch in Target stores nationwide. Five years and four stores later, Lively is just getting started. I chat with Michelle about how she came up with the concept for Lively, how the men's shaving brand Harry's inspired Lively's buzzy, disruptive launch, and why she loves to "live in Beta". She talks about living with urgency (“there's no need to wait for that thing you're going after”), being loud and speaking your truth, the importance of listening to your inner voice, and that disruptive moment when the world saw Bozoma, in a form-fitting fuschia dress and pink Louboutins, while delivering the keynote on stage at 2016's Apple Worldwide Developers Conference. High-powered marketing executive Bozoma has always been her authentic self throughout her illustrious career (so far spanning 20 years), proving there's no glory in playing small. A breath of fresh air in the corporate world, Saint John has been shaking things up her way, rocking a fearless attitude, bold personality, and an even bolder voice. She might seem playful, but this executive did not come here to play. At the beginning of her career, Boz got her start in marketing at Spike Lee's advertising agency, Spike DDB. She then went on to manage brands within the PepsiCo beverages portfolio, before becoming Head of Music and Entertainment Marketing at the CPG giant; followed by Head of Global Consumer Marketing at Apple Music & iTunes; then went on to serve as Chief Brand Officer at Uber; before taking on the CMO role for Endeavor. Boz also recently launched “The Badass Workshop,” comprised of five 60-minute classes based on the secrets of her success, to achieve the ultimate goal: the greatest self. And in January, the workshop will be presented as a session titled “Anatomy of a Badass”, at Harvard MBA school. You can also hear Boz's powerful voice in her podcast “Back to Biz with Katie and Boz,” alongside award-winning journalist Katie Couric. And in the words of Boz, “LET'S GOOOOOOO”! In 2016, former co-workers and forever best friends Pip Edwards and Claire Tregoning joined forces and launched their street-meets-sportswear brand, P.E. Nation. While the Australian-based activewear label has garnered a massive following and “It factor” status thanks to its sleek yet functional, fashion-inspired silhouettes and styles, its capsule collection with H&M that launched in March 2020 catapulted them onto the global stage. (The partnership marked H&M's first collaboration with an Australian-based brand). The athleisure phenomenon took on new meaning when everyone around the globe leaned into wearing comfortable clothing at home: COVID-19's lockdown inspired P.E. Nation to launch a genderless, unisex collection, called “UNI-form.” They have also recently expanded into swimsuits, always inspired by sustainability and street style. I spoke with Pip and Claire about the evolution of athleisure, how Pip pivoted from a corporate career to fashion founder, how they choose their fashion looks before posting to IG, and finding their voices (spoiler alert: it's a constant work in progress…) Produced by Dear Media
Ever since Madison Utendahl launched her own creative agency in April 2019, Utendahl Creative, she has infused her brand of empathy, storytelling and curiosity into every project. And she has been making noise: the creative work that her agency developed this past summer, as a response to the BLM protests and the new conversations about race and racism being had, was featured in "W" magazine, among "The Graphic Designers Defining the Aesthetics of Black Lives Matter." Madison, whose impressive resume includes HBO's "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver", Refinery29 and Museum of Ice Cream, is vocal about her leadership style (she leads with empathy), and the need for a new kind of storytelling. Madison will inspire you to start 2021 -- or even next week -- with a new mindset. She talks about letting go: letting go of toxic clients (and why you also need to know when it's time to quit, if you have a toxic boss), letting go of the need for perfection, letting go of distractions, and instead embracing self-love, transformation, showing up for oneself, and presence. Simon Huck is the real-life example of a Canadian with big dreams, who made his way to the Big City when he moved from Ottawa to New York City in the mid-2000s. Today, after more than 15 years in the PR industry (he is currently the president of Command Entertainment Group), Simon felt the entrepreneurial itch to create a new product, in the emergency preparedness space -- of all places. He cofounded JUDY in 2019 with Joshua Udashkin, and in a 2020 that has been filled with a pandemic and wildfires, the brand JUDY is dedicated to ensuring people have the education, and the actual tools to survive emergencies and be ready for anything. On the topic of emergencies, Simon also recently launched the podcast, "Emergency Contact" with his cohost and IRL emergency contact, Melissa Gray Walsh, which features celebs and their emergency contacts. You might also recognize Simon from episodes of "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" and from the celebrity pages of the magazines Simon used to read as a kid growing up in Ottawa. I chatted with Simon about taking a leap of faith, using your voice and asking for what you want, why everyone needs "JUDY" in their life, and his fiance, "Pip the Rip." I sat down to talk all things career pivots, CBD-infused skincare, seeking fulfillment and balance, and how to find your voice, with the always inspiring Jenna Owens. It's especially awesome to chat with a woman who has not only learned how to use her voice as a successful entrepreneur, but who first became famous for using her voice -- literally -- as the former cohost of the nationally-syndicated radio show, “The Kidd Kraddick Morning Show,” where she served as an on-air personality for 12 years. The entrepreneurial venture Fitish, which Jenna launched in April 2017, began as the Fitish30 fitness program, and has since become known for its CBD-infused skincare line, which is sold on Fitish's website as well as at major retailers like Urban Outfitters and Neiman Marcus. Fitish's hero products, the “Tone Down” CBD facial mist and the makeup setting spray, “Don't Sweat It”, have become instant classics, while the “Dewing It” moisturizer is a constant best-seller. Fitish even has some CBD-infused products for pets! And although Fitish has a range of skincare products, Jenna loves that the CBD component of her brand goes beyond beauty and skincare -- it has healing properties, making her career as a founder even more fulfilling. Owens might have left morning radio to manage her business full-time, but fans of her magnetic voice and authentic nature can now catch her on “Fitish: The Podcast,” with former radio cohost J-Si, where they talk about all the stuff they couldn't on a nationally syndicated radio show (they don't keep it G-rated, guys.) Jessica Lanyadoo has been working as an astrologer and psychic medium for over two decades now -- but don't get it twisted, not all astrologers, psychics and mediums are created equal. Based in San Francisco, Jessica has earned an engaged global audience as a one-on-one intuitive consultant and as the host of the Q&A podcast, Ghost of a Podcast. We dive into her gift of serving as a medium between the living and the dead (she sees, hears and feels dead people -- NBD, right?), what it physically feels like, and what actually scares her. (Spoiler alert: she's not afraid of ghosts). We discuss why she co-founded the movement, Zodiac the Vote (an inclusive platform providing people, activists and astrology fans with reliable content that highlights the connection between spiritual integrity, social justice, and civic participation), finding her truth as a member of the queer community and leaning into her gifts, some tips on flexing your intuitive muscle, and what rituals to partake in (and avoid!) this coming Halloween. PS: Zodiac the Vote has created dope merchandise, with proceeds going toward supporting organizations fighting for voting rights, especially within marginalized communities. (And let's be real: what better way to encourage people to use their voice than by voting?) Hold up, there's more: Jessica is the author of Astrology For Real Relationships, and contributes to many magazines and publications. When Koreen Odiney launched the game We're Not Really Strangers (also known as WNRS, pronounced ‘winners') in November 2018, she was equipped with a laser-focused ‘why': “To empower people to make meaningful connections.” If you haven't seen the card game, which is highly identifiable thanks to its signature red box and minimalist-yet-strategic design, then you've likely stumbled onto one of the Instagram account's compelling posts. With a current reach of 2.4 million followers (and growing), the @werenotreallystrangers Instagram account's images have long struck a chord with its followers, as evidenced by the amount of comments in each post. And with quotes like “One day at a time,” “Tell someone how much they mean to you, we all really need it right now” and “I've been better,” the account is resonating even more deeply during this climate of uncertainty. After the murder of George Floyd this summer sparked much needed conversations around racism and unconscious bias, the We're Not Really Strangers team dropped this quote: “If A Converastion Is Hard, It's Probably The One Worth Having.” Koreen and her team have become known for saying what's on all of our minds -- without us even knowing it. I sat down with Koreen to discuss how the WNRS movement came about, how she creates the threads and questions, and what's up with her OG Instagram account, @chickenandwaffles. You might not know this, but Charlotte Cho is credited with coining the term, “10-step Korean skincare routine”, which earned her the title of “K-Beauty Queen.” Charlotte was born and raised in Los Angeles, and developed her passion for skincare and Korean beauty when she moved to South Korea. While she started out in PR for Samsung, her love for K-Beauty led her to launch Soko Glam, the online marketplace for Korean beauty products, with her husband Dave. This was back in 2012, making Charlotte an OG icon in the Korean beauty space. Soko Glam's mission: to help people discover Korean skincare, beauty trends, and cosmetics. After years of curating and testing out K-beauty products -- and becoming enamored with the beauty of the double cleanse method in the process -- Charlotte launched Then I Met You, a line of skincare that's become known for its signature periwinkle blue branding and hero products, the two-step “Cleansing Duo.” (Its “Living Cleansing Balm” has racked up an array of beauty industry awards.) While I'm obsessed with Then I Met You, I love its ethos even more: the Korean concept of jeong, a deep and meaningful connection that encourages empathy and generosity. I love that Charlotte flipped the script on skincare by boldly encouraging us to take our time while cleansing, rather than promoting a “quick and easy routine.” After all, the beauty is in not rushing… Find out why Charlotte and Dave built Soko Glam, the process behind Then I Met You, why operating from a place of intention and listening to her inner voice served Charlotte in her career, and why jeong can become a life-changing way of looking at the world. Sharon Chuter was born in Nigeria, where she was credited with bringing Revlon to the country, as a teenager (yes, you read that right). She relocated to Perth, Australia, where she honed her skills at some of the world's leading companies, including L'Oreal, Pepsi, GlaxoSmithKline, and as an executive at the LVMH-owned Benefit Cosmetics. Sharon grew frustrated with the lack of real inclusivity in the beauty industry, and set out to launch her own beauty brand, UOMA Beauty -- with the widest array of foundations (6 “Skin Kins” or skin color groups). UOMA Beauty has won industry awards since making its debut in April 2019, and Sharon has earned recognition as one of beauty's brightest. But it's her boldness that is truly making waves. Sharon launched “Pull Up For Change” on June 3, the day after “Black Out Tuesday” and as a response to the murder of George Floyd this summer. With the call to action for brands to #PullUpOrShutUp, Sharon called on beauty brands to offer transparency about the diversity of their employees and outline concrete goals for doing better in the future. With UOMA Beauty, Sharon inspires everyone to show up every day as their raw self, a tribute to the misfits, “the weirdos,” the people who have been left out. And with Pull Up For Change, she is reminding us to see color, to see the beauty in our differences, and to get uncomfortable. I loved chatting with Sharon about her vision for UOMA Beauty, why diversity should be the status quo, and why the call for change she is demanding is so critical for the world.
