Join East Coast DNA host Darcy Walsh for a chat with PEI's Kinley Dowling. We dirve into her musical history, her time with Hey Rosetta!, and her latest single, Marrying Me, produced by Corey LeRue. KINLEY is a skilled and sought-after collaborator at her core, sharing countless stages and recording credits with some of Canada's best-known artists on over 550 tracks. PEI indie pop powerhouse KINLEY has adapted that approach into her solo work – and is delivering the most compelling material of her decorated career as a result. She's released 3 solo albums and won countless East Coast Music and Music PEI Awards. Corey LeRue is a multi-platinum, Juno award winning producer, songwriter, remixer and engineer. In May, 2024, at the East Coast Music Awards (ECMA) in Charlottetown, KINLEY met Corey LeRue in the hallway just after he won the ECMA for Producer of the Year. As a fan of him and his work with Neon Dreams, she slipped her latest album in his Sobeys bag as he was leaving to go back home. Later that night she got a nice message from Corey asking if she had any demos she would like him to work on. The next day KINLEY sent Corey a demo of ‘Marrying Me' and within a week he had produced, mixed and mastered it, and it's ready for release into the world. "I live in the adorable city of Charlottetown and I hear church bells all the time and this became the inspiration for ‘Marrying Me.' I started to think about all my friends who got married and all the weddings that I've played for and observed a lot of them didn't work out. It also made me think about myself and how I grew up thinking that of course I would get married and how beautiful it would be but I realized I was only imagining the romance and the fabulous white dress and being surrounded by friends and family. I never imagined the reality of marriage past the glamour. That's when I came up with the chorus of the song. My reality hasn't included marriage and it may or may not be in the cards but it is no longer an expectation because my reality is a life filled with love and rich experience." http://www.kinleymusic.com/
From his days fronting the indie rock band Hey, Rosetta! to his current run as a solo artist, Tim Baker's music has always had a way of connecting at a deeper level. On this episode, the Canadian songwriter opens up about creative friction and why it means everything to the process of making anything.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Rube & Rake's new album begins with an ode to family and friends— togetherness—as Josh Sandu declares, against a hopeful bluegrass backdrop, “somewhere there's a place to lay my head.” Nine songs later, over a gently plucked guitar, he sings, “I won't go picking it up, the weight of the page is just too much.”Following the award-winning 2017 debut Back and Forth, the St. John's- based Sandu and Andrew Laite wanted to keep the core of that album's artistic successes—musical and collaborative harmony, folk storytelling—while recognizing audience expectations have intensified. “The first album ends up being the greatest hits of what you've done so far,” says Laite. “With record number two, you want it to be in the ring with the first one, only bigger and stronger.”For their sophomore album Leaving With Nothing, Sandu and Laite enlisted producer Adam Hogan, best known for his anthemic guitar work as a member of Newfoundland's most beloved indie-rock outfit, Hey Rosetta!. Recording in bits in houses around St. John's, Rube & Rake (& Adam) worked to expand the band's sound to include more instrumentation, pleasingly surprising time changes, and an overall expansion of intention.“We knew that this grouping of songs deserved a different treatment and wanted to introduce somebody with different instincts and tendencies,” says Laite. “We were confident that Adam would shed the right light on these songs while also maintaining our methodology.” “He's a very engaged person,” adds Sandu, “who had a lot of thoughts on every aspect of the recording process.”Sandu and Laite have always maximized the duo configuration—even singing together at a single condenser microphone, allowing for space and patience within the songs—but this is the first time they've consciously pushed outside it, to fill in that air with new tones and textures in the form of a full band. The resulting record evokes Blue Rodeo at its most rollicking, Great Lake Swimmers at their most thoughtful, and The Tallest Man On Earth at their most gently contemplative. The best distillation of all these themes, music and expectation and place, comes at the album's midpoint, in the five-minute “10-33”—CB radio code for “mayday”—where Rube & Rake reveal themselves to be ready for anything. “This ain't a common road, but you already know,” sings Sandu, “I will be leaving with nothing, a-dead-head I will go.”The collection of 10 songs comprising Leaving With Nothing fits comfortably in the folk tradition of road-worn tales and lost love laments told across an ever-changing, often lonely landscape. Rube & Rake is for late-night wind-downs, long drives, a walk by the water: solitary and steadfast, honest and true.#galeforcewins is an inspirational podcast with New episodes every Tuesday evening on Youtube or wherever you get your podcasts. You can also visit https://galeforcewins.com/To message Gerry visit: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gerrycarew/To message Allan visit: https://www.linkedin.com/in/allanadale/
Tim Baker - I'm a legit fan of Tim Baker. I love Hey Rosetta! and I love his solo stuff. In fact, I became an even bigger fan when I saw how well he morphed into a solo artist after being in such a successful band and how clear his vision seemed. His musicality is deep and his voice is an instrument of crazy range. Like McCartney he can sing as sweet as a bird or let loose with total abandon and really scream it out without it losing the focus of the emotion. It's special. He just put out a great new single called “Lucky Few” and has a new record (which was largely recorded on Fogo Island) coming out in the fall. Check out timbaker.net for all the touring info. Big thanks to Tim for taking the time to chat.

Did everyone notice the hiatusI just took? Yeah, me too! With my show getting syndicated I've had little time to actually - like - DO THE SHOW, hahaha... With that said, I am back babies! This episode features Tim Baker of Hey Rosetta telling me stories that range from he and I taking the same university courses (small sociological world people) to his view on writing in music today. He's very east coast, his music is too. Don't know what I mean by that? You will. I include two of my current favourite songs by Hey Rosetta on this episode and if you aren't a fan by the end of it then hit up Youtube because you can hear more and settle on the beauty of it all by yourself. You'll get there, Paula is here to help :) I kid. Everyone becomes a really quick lover of this band. Bands like this pick up fans fast because they put a lot into their tunes and make them both fun and meaningful. That's kinda what I mean by East Coast too. Listen and know. Thanks for sticking it out during the mild step back I took to prep my show for radio - its HARD YA'LL when you be working on a old-ass laptop with a missing 'm' and enough dents and cracks to be a relic. www.heyrosetta.com Until next week lovelies, Paula

We also speak with Zach from Vancouver indie pop outfit The Zolas about the band's latest release, Wino Oracle" - a teaser EP featuring three tracks from their upcoming full-length. mFinally, we speak with Jason Burns, the founder of Burnt Tree management who, along with clients including Hey Rosetta!, Rich Aucoin, and Plants & Animals, has just joined Arts & Crafts' management division.

Yesterday, as I was sitting in the glorious sunshine with my wonderful son, listening to one of my favourite bands of all, for free, I was thinking that it was pretty much a perfect day. One of the songs I heard, in particular, had me thinking about perfect songs, so today’s show starts off with a whole bunch of songs that I’d call pretty much perfect. We also paid tribute to a guy who knew a thing or two about perfect songs, Joe Strummer, on what would have been his birthday. We also announced the next exciting show at Sunset Saloon and heard some peppy, poppy new releases, including a great new East Coast supergroup.
