Despite our busy lives and numerous connections, many of us still feel isolated. I chat about the real, often hidden, impact loneliness can have on our mental and physical health. In this episode Better Leaders, Better Workplaces, host Vivian Blade is joined by Michael Davis, a principal with Mindshare Partners, to dig into the seemingly contradictory state of workplace mental health and the strategies to address it. If you're a business or HR leader seeking to create a better workplace, this episode is a must-listen. Get ready to learn how to elevate employee well-being, increase productivity, and foster a supportive work culture. Here are 3 key takeaways: 1. Shift from an individual-centric approach to a collective responsibility: Organizations that prioritize employee mental health understand that it's not about providing benefits and expecting individuals to solely manage their well-being. It's about fostering a culture where mental health is a shared priority, and the entire ecosystem supports employee well-being. 2. Mental health is a culture strategy, not just a benefit strategy: Initiatives focused on mental health shouldn't be confined to offering benefits and resources. True impact comes from embedding mental health considerations into the fabric of an organization's culture. It should be approached as a strategic imperative requiring investment, measurement, governance, and involvement of all stakeholders. 3. Focus on creating a culture of safety and support: According to Mindshare Partners' 2023 Mental Health at Work Report, employees value a work environment that fosters a culture of safety and support more than benefits or therapy. To elevate employee well-being, organizations need to measure employee experiences, upskill their workforce, and implement a holistic mental health strategy. The latest CIPD report on the Learning & Development profession is both revealing and inspiring. L&D practitioners and leaders have had a huge amount to deal with, in recent years, with many using circumstances to make radical changes. For others, not so much. So, what does this all mean and what do we need to do about it? In this conversation, we unpack the report and highlight some key findings - as well as provide commentary and insight ourselves. KEY TAKEAWAYS The CIPD report seeks to uncover what´s changing, what´s new, and what is important for the L&D community. Despite challenges, the industry is optimistic. There is now more emphasis on digital. It will soon no longer be possible to recruit yourself out of the skills gap, a fact that is driving businesses to invest in training their personnel. When it comes to organizational priorities and alignment there has been some slippage. Learner time constraints and a lack of engagement are still issues. Line managers are still not playing a key role in learning. Ongoing learning, reflection, and adaptation are all essential. 57% of L&D professionals seek to understand performance issues before recommending a solution. Zoom out on the data to get the bigger picture. Use the report to look at things through a different lens and learn from it on a personal level. BEST MOMENTS 'Leaders recognize the value we have on organization priorities.' 'The hardest way to do L&D is to tell somebody a different way to do the job without understanding the job.' 'By increasing your value, you increase your currency.' This week, Euractiv's Beyond the Byline podcast looks into the hotly contested report on the regulation of sex work.EU lawmakers adopted a report advocating the decriminalisation of people engaged in sex work, while suggesting the 'punishment' but not criminalisation of those who use their services. The report, although lacking direct legislative impact, sparked controversy as it initially proposed the Nordic model, criminalising sex buyers, but later opted for a milder stance. It also called for support and exit programmes for sex workers, highlighting a division among MEPs on the issue of whether buyers should be criminalised and if prostitution should be viewed as gender-based violence or a profession. We talked with the rapporteur of the report, MEP Maria Noichl, and Euractiv's journalist Silvia Ellena to better understand what the report is about. We also talked with MEP Karen Melchior and Sabrina Sanchez, director of the European Sex Workers Alliance, to find out what was not considered during the report and how this report could affect sex workers and the regulation of prostitution.

How does it feel to see yourself as an "error" in the system? When you try out over 40 jobs and you fit into none? From system error to futurist, Ali Mahlodji discovered his sense of purpose in the midst of his life's difficulties. Having zigzagged his way from refugee to technology entrepreneur and CEO to global thought leader, he helps children and at-risk persons navigate the multiple paths to a sense of purpose in an uncertain world and often amid difficult circumstances. And he does so by drawing on his own inner and outer journey. As a boy, Ali had no idea what kind of career he wanted when he grew up. He envisioned a Handbook of Life Stories that would feature people in a variety of jobs from all around the world and would be available for anyone to borrow from libraries. When he was 30, he launched that vision as a digital platform (whatchado.com) with a few friends - an opportunity made possible by enhanced technology, social media, and the internet. At the time of its launch, whatchado.com featured 17 stories. Today, it is Europe's largest video job orientation platform featuring nearly 8,000 stories and hundreds of company profiles, including partners in education and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). If you asked Ali whether his younger self knew that he would one day become an award-winning entrepreneur, he would likely say no. "Life itself starts and ends by chance, and in between we think we can make plans for the next 40 years which is crazy. Life is a zigzag...The most beautiful thing about life is its uncertainty," says Ali. Ali was born in Tehran, Iran in 1981. His parents, both professionals in academia, took Ali and fled persecution in 1984. The family left Iran in the middle of the night and traveled to Turkey before making their way to Vienna, Austria. By the time Ali was 10 years old, he had lived in 13 different apartments. In Vienna, his mother cleaned for an architecture company while his father stocked groceries. When he was 13, Ali's parents divorced and he developed a stutter. He went on to drop out of school at 18, just before his exit exams. Ali remembers, "My father always told me to find out what I don't want to do, so the only way to do that was to try things out." And so he did, exploring more than 40 jobs before returning to finish his education in his late twenties. Ali went on to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Programming and joined the technology sector. After his father passed away, Ali felt called to do something that felt more meaningful, so he left his high paying job as a Global Systems Engineer and became a grammar school teacher until founding whatchado.com. Ali said, "A lot of young people don't have any idea of what to do in their future. It's so powerful when you have a chance to talk to someone about your experiences. We started this platform to show people if they want to have a job one day, don't think there's only one way to get there." Passionate about helping prepare youth for the future, Ali dedicates 50% of his work to young people pro bono. In his TEDx Talk, Ali encourages young people to question the status quo, to be grateful so they do not end up acting in greed, and to believe in the future because "we need the energy to create the kind of world we want to live in." In his voluntary work, Ali also works with adult prisoners and youth at-risk of exclusion. The other half of his time he works with leaders and focuses on professional development. Since launching whatchado.com, Ali has gone on to create start-ups such as futureRocka, ALIDO, and futureOne (which also has a podcast called futureOne HEROES). He is a best-selling author of multiple books including Und Was Machst Du So? (or, And What Are You Doing?), Next Level WORK, Ent-Decker Dein Wofur (or, Discover What You're Doing For), and Work Report. He has worked with various companies and organizations including Google, BMW, IBM, Siemens, Mastercard, Microsoft, Red Bull, and the United Nations. He has won numerous awards including HR Excellence Award and New Work Award (twice each), Voices Award for Best Business Podcast, Digital Communications Award, and Andreus Peace Award, among others. Ali currently lives in Vienna with his wife, whom he describes as "the woman of his dreams," and they have two super cool daughters. Ali travels around the world as a keynote speaker on topics such as focus and simplicity in business, mindful leadership, leading new generations, diversity and inclusion, and "the art of making one's own life authentic." Join us in conversation with this master speaker and author, who inspires us to live with relentless enthusiasm and compassion through all the zig-zags of life.
Gary A. Bolles is Chair for the Future of Work at Singularity University, co-founder of eParachute.com, and Author of “The Next Rules of Work: The Mindset, Skillset and Toolset to Lead Your Organization through Uncertainty”. After a first interview in April 2020, Gary returns to the show to report on how he sees the Future of Work progressing and our ongoing adjustments for it. He shares insights about important work trends, mindsets, behaviors, and balance. Gary describes how concurrent waves of old work rules, transitional models, and the next rules of work are impacting leaders and our multigenerational workforce with its shifting weighting of employees and non-employees. KEY TAKEAWAYS [02:20] Revisiting our first podcast discussion at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, Gary recalls his article about the Great Reset. [03:54] The helpful visual of multiple waves to understand the evolution of work. [05:10] Some leaders have bungeed back to old rules of work while others have embraced new rules and operating systems. [07:02] The effect of perceived incentives and disincentives on changing habits and rules. [08:05] How to benefit from pandemic learnings and accept the messiness of adapting new practices. [10:50] Zooming out to shift your mindset about how to solve problems across your ecosystem. [11:36] Imagining leading without ego and with trust in order to alter leaders' approaches. [14:53] How media's mischaracterizations don't help as three waves of work try to co-exist. [15:32] The inevitable trend of continuous co-creation which young people especially seem to embrace. [16:30] The power dynamic had tilted towards employers which flexible work is rebalancing to some degree. [18:29] Picture ourselves as icebergs. We employ entire people, not just the tip of the iceberg which we recruit. [19:32] In the new era of work, leaders are responsible for workers, their lives, and communities. [21:43] Sophie anticipates smaller core employee groups and more non-employee workers in future. [22:50] Future employee “agency” achieved through a “worknet” - a flexible flow of talent with varying degrees of organization membership. [24:05] How to help increase degrees of membership in your company, enable people to feel connected, co-create effectively, and be rewarded. [25:00] Cybersecurity provides a similar framework for the worknet model. [27:00] Using words and concepts that reflect people's sentiments and realities helps us reach balanced understanding and outcomes. [29:10] Aren't young employees manifesting the Future of Work rather than disrupting work norms? [30:15] How young people are responding to new market signals as new work practices endure. [32:09] Why older leaders are bereft at Gen Z's behaviors and miss the opportunity of co-creation. [33:23] Why aren't younger employees' deciding their careers now, and other related outcomes? [34:45] How the precarity of the world is driving youth to hedge their bets with a portfolio strategy. [35:32] Looking at the three stages of life horizontally not vertically (sequentially) as proposed by Gary's father who wrote “What Color is Your Parachute?” [36:47] Parents ask “Why won't my kid get a real job?” It's a hedge strategy. It's ensuring optionality. [39:00] How culture can be a journey, defined by a mindset and behaviors that are reinforced. [41:30] What is the process and ongoing actions that empower agency and co-creation? [43:46] Gary defines empathy as lived experiences. He focuses on caring for coworkers. [47:19] The sea change ahead as more capable tools come online. [48:08] Work involving synthesis is greatly enhanced by AI-boosted tools. [49:46] Leaders need to focus on helping workers be upskilled and utilize the tools to solve current problems. [51:18] Starting with a growth (vs fixed) mindset and focusing on flex (or soft) skills for today's business needs. [52:15] Companies must invest in training employees as education systems are still biased towards teaching bodies of knowledge, not flexible skills that augment interactions and social situations. [55:40] IMMEDIATE ACTION TIP: Reframe managers and supervisors as team guides. Rethink the process, what their role is, and how you can help them to guide teams throughout your organization, “un-boss” meetings, and be there to remove roadblocks so team members can co-create solutions. RESOURCES Gary Bolles on LinkedIn Gary Bolles on Twitter @gbolles Gary's book “The Next Rules of Work: The Mindset, Skillset and Toolset to Lead Your Organization through Uncertainty” Gary's website eparachute.com Carol Dweck's book Mindset: Changing the Way You Think to Fulfil Your Potential QUOTES (edited) “We're pattern recognizers, we're general-purpose problem-solving machines.” “I think that's actually a failure on our part, wasting a perfectly good pandemic. We showed that we can trust. We showed that we can imbue teams with the power to be able to decide when and where and with whom and how they work. And then we took it away from them.” “We're going to find that once you've given people agency and some level of autonomy, they don't want to give it back. And I think that's a perfectly reasonable request.” “Along comes a pandemic, and suddenly you and I are looking into each other's homes on Zoom calls. And we realize: that's a whole person and if I'm an employer I have to be responsible for their physical health, their mental health, their emotional health, the whole person. And that's not what I signed up for in the old rules of work!” “I don't hear a lot of workers complain to me that they're not engaged. That's not the way that a worker would say it. A worker would typically say ‘I want to feel motivated by my work', ‘I want to feel like I have meaning in my work', ‘I want to feel well compensated', ‘I want to feel recognized.'” “Gen Z was born around 9/11. They were children through the global recession and young adults in a global pandemic, on a planet on fire. There aren't a lot of other generations that have had that sequence of precarity.” “In a world of almost complete uncertainty, there are no safe jobs.” “Why are you waiting to enjoy life until retirement? Does that make any sense in a world on fire? No. We're going to do it now.” “We keep thinking “Just shove more bodies of knowledge into those little heads”. And that's not the way the world is working. The shelf life of that information, of those skills, is decaying so rapidly. We have to explicitly teach these much more flexible skills and then employers have to demand them.”

On March 5th, Chinese outgoing Premier Li Keqiang opened the National People's Congress meeting with his annual Work Report and revealed a growth target of “around 5%”, the lowest since 1976. For decades, the country had expanded by more than 10% annually. Even though China missed its target last year by a wide margin due to its zero-Covid policy, not many people expected this low of a target from Xi Jinping's government. What kind of economic policy will China need to adopt to revive its economy, and where is the future of the U.S-China economic relationship? Perhaps never before has the focus of mental and emotional wellness been at the forefront of leadership. The pandemic impacted every area of people's lives, and has been a leading factor in an increase of mental health concerns. And it is not behind us yet. Taking care of yourself is vital: if you are depleted your health, work, and ability to support others will suffer. In 2011 the Ministry of Education embarked on a 10 year strategy to rejuvenate New Zealand's ageing classrooms. Millions of dollars were spent building open plan classrooms and implementing student led learning strategies. But in his report for The New Zealand Initiative, Dr Michael Johnston, found there was little evidence the policy has worked at all, and in some cases may be making learning even more difficult for some students. He says schools are now left with a legacy of a policy based on ideology.
We're going deeper into the evidence today with two brilliant guests. Anne Raimondi is COO of Asana who were smart enough to have started a major piece of research into how work is evolving just before the world turned upside down. We're also joined by the most in demand brain in the world right now, Professor Nick Bloom. Nick is Professor WFH, an economist from Stanford University who has been researching remote working for over a decade.Along the way we talk about how the biggest innovations in remote working are yet to come - and are coming from mindblowing places. We talk the changing expectations of Gen Z workers, why Nick doesn't believe we should be giving up our office just yet. We hear where the sweetspot of hybrid working is right now and why a little less freedom and a little more co-ordination is the order of the day.I was desperately trying to get Nick on the podcast and to land Anne Raimondi at the same time is a wonderful stroke of luck.Asana's Anatomy of Work Report 2022 is available here. Partner Anthony Wood and Senior Associate Lucy Boyd have a conversation with Maurice Blackburn Principal Josh Bornstein about sexual harassment and the recent Respect@Work report. Josh has acted for plaintiffs in some of Australia's most high profile recent sexual harassment claims. Although often on opposite sides of employment litigation matters, it might surprise some viewers that we agree on many of the matters up for discussion. A large number of our clients are already adopting best practice ‘victim-centric' approaches to sexual harassment, with a greater emphasis on transparency and accountability.
