Part One: Jailhouse Jannies In this episode, we're diving into the spirit — and  mischief — of Christmas in Newfoundland. First, I've got an old story from Trinity, where one group of mummers wound up in jail… but that was far from the worst thing to happen to them. I call the story Jannies in the Jailhouse. I've come across this tale a number of times in my travels but I based my retelling on a version shared in the Daily News' ‘Trinity Notes' section on January 3, 1955. Part Two: Tyler Humber of Kitchinparti I'm excited to welcome Tyler Humber of Kitchinparti, the ECMA-nominated family trio known for their high-energy performances, harmonies, and dedication to keeping Newfoundland's musical traditions alive. Made up of Tyler (vocals, guitar), his sister Terri Lynn Hickey (vocals, tin whistle), and brother-in-law Justin Hickey (vocals, bass), Kitchinparti embodies the spirit of a true Newfoundland kitchen party—which is to say they bring people atogether with music, laughter, and stories. Since forming about four years ago, Kitchinparti has been adding their own original songs to Newfoundland's musical catalog while reimagining traditional favorites. They're currently working on their third album with producer Matt Dines, set to release in the summer of 2025. This holiday season, the band is celebrating the tradition of mummering with their new single, Plank'er Down. Written by Charlie Payne and made famous by Uncle Harry's Bar Band, the ‘Plank'er Down' captures the fun energy of mummers as they visit homes late into the night. I'm thrilled to chat with Tyler about Plank'er Down, the band's roots, and classic Newfoundland hors d'ouvers. Part Three: Martha's Dance With The Mummer Finally a brand new story; a ghostly tale from Bonavista Bay about a woman's last dance with a mummer. It's a story of love and loss, and maybe even the fulfillment of a Christmas promise from long ago… the whole town wants to get a glimpse behind the mummer's mask, instead the get a glimpse beyond the veil. Supported by ArtsNB, Music New Brunswick, and the Canada Council for the Arts, Sequoia is an 11-track album developed with her band and six-time ECMA-winning producer Daniel Ledwell (Jenn Grant, Fortunate Ones, The Good Lovelies). Deeply rooted in folk-Canadiana, Sequoia also delves into folk-rock and jazz-pop fusion, embodying a sound Fox describes as “70s Sesame Street meets Sharon Van Etten.” The album reflects on themes of gratitude, women's roles, relationships, and the environment, with inspiration drawn from a news story about firefighters saving a Sequoia tree. Kylie shares, “It resonated with me how severely nature and time have been taken for granted.” In songs like the title track, she explores personal realizations about how we sometimes neglect the most important aspects of life—echoing the sentiment of Joni Mitchell's Big Yellow Taxi. Join East Coast DNA host Darcy Walsh for a chat with PEI's Kinley Dowling. We dirve into her musical history, her time with Hey Rosetta!, and her latest single, Marrying Me, produced by Corey LeRue. KINLEY is a skilled and sought-after collaborator at her core, sharing countless stages and recording credits with some of Canada's best-known artists on over 550 tracks. PEI indie pop powerhouse KINLEY has adapted that approach into her solo work – and is delivering the most compelling material of her decorated career as a result. She's released 3 solo albums and won countless East Coast Music and Music PEI Awards. Corey LeRue is a multi-platinum, Juno award winning producer, songwriter, remixer and engineer. In May, 2024, at the East Coast Music Awards (ECMA) in Charlottetown, KINLEY met Corey LeRue in the hallway just after he won the ECMA for Producer of the Year. As a fan of him and his work with Neon Dreams, she slipped her latest album in his Sobeys bag as he was leaving to go back home. Later that night she got a nice message from Corey asking if she had any demos she would like him to work on. The next day KINLEY sent Corey a demo of ‘Marrying Me' and within a week he had produced, mixed and mastered it, and it's ready for release into the world. "I live in the adorable city of Charlottetown and I hear church bells all the time and this became the inspiration for ‘Marrying Me.' I started to think about all my friends who got married and all the weddings that I've played for and observed a lot of them didn't work out. It also made me think about myself and how I grew up thinking that of course I would get married and how beautiful it would be but I realized I was only imagining the romance and the fabulous white dress and being surrounded by friends and family. I never imagined the reality of marriage past the glamour. That's when I came up with the chorus of the song. My reality hasn't included marriage and it may or may not be in the cards but it is no longer an expectation because my reality is a life filled with love and rich experience." http://www.kinleymusic.com/

Gadzooks - this is one gold nugget of a special Graventown episode as my guest is a songmaker who, in my mind, makes music that is not of this world. Having spent the last 20 years playing nearly every folk and jazz festival in Canada and captivating audiences across the globe in Japan, Europe, Australia, Mexico, South America, the USA and the Middle East, JUNO and ECMA award winning Jill Barber, with her new album "Homemaker", delivers ten quietly profound songs about the complexities of motherhood, marriage, and the struggle to feel at home in one's own identity. Homemaker is a return to Jill's folk roots. Whereas her most recent albums have been bathed in lush string arrangements, Homemaker sees emotions laid bare, with a stripped-down production style reminiscent of her acclaimed debut Oh Heart and double Juno Award nominated follow-up For All Time and it drops on February 10th. We had a real deep and all-encompassing convo and I hope you enjoyed listening as much as I did. This episode is brought to you by: GRUBBED Since launching his career in early 2020, Justin Fancy, who hails from Conception Bay South, Newfoundland, has quickly become one to watch on the Canadian Country Music scene. Masterfully combining classic country songwriting with his own take on today's country sound, Justin's music is both fresh and familiar. After releasing two stand-alone singles in early 2020, Justin released his debut album, Sure Beats a Good Time, which became the catalyst for Justin winning Music Newfoundland's 2020 Country Artist of the Year and Rising Star of the Year. It was the first time in the history of the awards that the same artist has won both categories in the same year. Most recently, Justin was crowned the 2022 ECMA's Fan's Choice Entertainer of the Year and had three nominations in total at this years awards, including Solo Artist of The Year and Country Recording of The Year. In June 2021, Justin's single “Makes Me Wanna” was chosen as Rogers One to Watch, propelling the single to #42 on the Billboard Canadian Radio charts. In addition, the single secured the #1 spot on Sirius XM Canada's CBC Country chart and held the position for three consecutive weeks. His latest single “Better Than You” also just hit #1 for two consecutive weeks on the same chart. In October 2021, Justin became the first-ever Canadian Country Artist to be invited by The Recording Academy to take part of their Press Play at Home concert series on Grammy.com (watch it here). Fancy's debut album, Sure Beats A Good Time, debuted in the No. 3 position on Apple's iTunes Canadian Country music chart. The record would go on to rack up more than a half-million streams across major streaming platforms. In addition to his single “Makes Me Wanna” peaking at #42 on the Billboard radio charts and being played at over 70 radio stations across Canada.

It is a pleasure to welcome singer-songwriter Willie Stratton, to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Willie picked up the guitar at 12 years old and started songwriting soon after. Then, he developed a brief obsession with the banjo and released his first album in 2011. Willie's record gained him an east coast audience and secured him a spot in the Gordie Sampson Songcamp a year later. In 2014, Willie released “Deserter,” which was equally moody but with a switch to guitar; the sound was more indie rock than folk. He won the MNS Alternative Album Award and earned him a nomination for ECMA Rising Star of the Year. When he was not recording, Willie Stratton was making his way across Canada, winning fans with his quirky and charming shows and attracting attention at international events such as the Folk Alliance. Two years later, Willie released Della Rosa, an oddball alternative country record that garnered him an ECMA nomination for Album of the Year. During the pandemic, he released the fun, up-tempo “Grease Coast,” a sound equally at home on the dusty cattle trail as it is among the pounding waves at the most daring surf spots.Willie's music has ranged from folk music to roots and indie rock, so it comes as no surprise that he has landed firmly in the alternative country genre. It is a shift that his fans are sure to embrace – an old-time country vibe with contemporary solid lyrics and a smooth baritone vocal reminiscent of Roy Orbison. In this edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Willie Stratton spoke about his latest album: Drugstore Dreamin'. He also shared the stories behind some of his best songs.
