If you were curating a mixtape that might be heard by aliens billions of years from now, but definitely would be seen by your fellow Earthlings, what would you put on it? In 1977, two Voyager spacecraft launched from Cape Canaveral on a journey that would take them out to our outer solar system and beyond. Affixed to the side of these two planetary explorers was the Voyager Golden Record. This ultimate mixtape of humanity contained 27 pieces of music and also pictures, greetings in many languages, and the sounds of Earth. Nearly 50 years later, we're exploring what's on the record, how it got made, and its legacy with one of it's makers. Oh! and we brought in our friends from Sidedoor to help :)Thanks to our guests in this episode: Ann Druyan - Voyager Golden Record Creative Director Lawrence Azerrad - Co-founder of Macroscopic Find the transcript here.AirSpace is created by the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum with generous support from Lockheed Martin.

In honor of Muppet*Vision 3D closing at Disney World, we look at the history of The Muppets before Kermit joined Miss Piggy and Fozzie Bear. Two decades earlier, Kermit was hanging out with Sam and Friends -- a local TV show in Washington, D.C., that launched Jim Henson's career. This episode comes from the podcast Sidedoor, produced by The Smithsonian with support from PRX. Their host Lizzie Peabody journeys back to 1955 to figure out how this eccentric cast of puppets built the foundation for everything Jim Henson would do afterwards, from Sesame Street to The Muppet Show and even Labyrinth. And the Sidedoor team ventures into the conservation labs to learn what it took to revive these crumbling hunks of foam and fabric when they landed at the Smithsonian. There are so many gifts in this episode and in the stories that she tells...but suffice it to say that for me, the discovery and timing, let along HOW it was discovered...around her cancer diagnosis was absolutely gobsmacking! She is light, bright and full of wisdom, and has a fierce sense of humor to boot! To read more about this wonderful human, click here...and to buy her book, COMING BACK TO LIFE, click here! Your bit of beauty this time is Edmonia Lewis, an African American & Native American sculptor and her piece "The Death of Cleopatra."  I recently listented to "Sidedoor" a Smithsonian podcast and the episode detailed Lewis' life, fame and subsequent slide into being forgotten. A powerful and redemptive story of what we humans create in this world and then leave behind (only to be discovered later in an abandoned space), her story resonated deeply with me this week. What are we creating every day, and how will the future find our works? I'll leave you with that thought and cheers to the rest of your week!

One of our favorites is Sidedoor: A podcast from the Smithsonian. Every episode, host Lizzie Peabody sneaks listeners through Smithsonian's side door to search for stories that can't be found anywhere else. We're excited to share one of those stories. “King's Speech” is about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the evolution of his iconic I Have a Dream speech. It's fascinating to chart the history of his speech and to hear how Dr. King was influenced by poet Langston Hughes, who worked with the Federal Theatre Project in the 1930s and co-wrote a play with one of the writers featured in the People's Recorder, Zora Neale Hurston.Guests: Kevin Young, Director of Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and CultureW. Silhouettes were a hugely popular and democratic form of portraiture in the 19th century. So an old ledger book full of cut paper profiles at the National Portrait Gallery caught a conservator's eye. It promised a rare glimpse at people from all different backgrounds who lived in early America. It also held a surprise: It was laced with poison. As we learn more about the impacts of light pollution on wildlife and ourselves, we are finding ways to bring some healthy darkness back to our communities. This week, we bring you an episode from the talented team at the Sidedoor podcast from the Smithsonian that investigates the history of our addiction to artificial light and explores a growing movement to be smarter about how and when we illuminate the world around us. Arguably the most important data for health systems developing Digital Front Door (or Side Door) solutions is standardized provider data - yet, many organizations still struggle in developing a single source of truth. In this episode, hosts Chris Boyer and Reed Smith discuss the various ways that provider data is used within a health system, and the challenges that organizations are facing in standardizing it. They are joined by Cynthia Newton, who shares her experience with not only helping organizations develop a Provider Data Warehouse (PDW) solution, but also the heightened complexity when extending outside the health system and including NPI and other third-party data sources.  Mentions from the Show: Pledge to Advance Healthcare Operations Is Your Provider Data Helping or Hurting You? Season seven is over but don't despair! We have some fun new things headed your way soon. In the meantime, we borrowed this episode from our friends at Smithsonian's Sidedoor to tide you all over. It took pride, deceit, and a giant catapult to set off the feud between the Wright brothers and the Smithsonian. On December 17, 1903, Orville Wright made history when he flew over 800 feet across a blustery beach in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The airplane he flew that day is now a centerpiece of the National Air and Space Museum's collection. This is the story of how it nearly wasn't.

We bring you a special episode from Sidedoor, a podcast about the treasures that fill the vaults of the Smithsonian.
